I tried to write a summary in Japanese. It is intended for an EPUB publication I am preparing, but I think that something similar makes a lot of sense for many reflowable EPUB publications in Japan.
On top of our specs, I used another document as a basis. It is a yearly report published recently by a study Group on accessible E-Book services in libraries in the National Diet Library of Japan. This report shows eleven accessibility mechanisms. Although seven of them are applicable to western publications, four of them are specific to Japan. These mechanisms are as follows:
Reading aloud each kanji character for differentiating homonyms
Switching from vertical writing to horizontal writing, and vice versa
Adaptive rendering of ruby
Space-separated phrases
For each of them, I wrote a paragraph in the summary.
This summary has more than 570 characters. My initial draft was much lengthier since I tried to make clear that many reading systems do not support each accessibility mechanism.
This document conforms to the EPUB Accessibility 1.1 specification at WCAG 2.1 Level AA. There are no accessibility issues.
The characters used are in the range of JIS X 0208. Character-like images are not included.
This document can be read aloud. Images in the publication are described in text. However, textual descriptions of complex diagrams do not cover all the information in the diagram.
A function that explains each kanji character by voice (detailed reading) is available.
Output to a Braille display is possible.
Enlargement of characters is possible.
Character spacing and line spacing can be adjusted.
The font can be replaced with an easy-to-read font.
It is possible to change both the color of the text and the background color.
It is possible to highlight the text in the corresponding section while reading out loud.
Although this document is written horizontally, it can also be displayed vertically. If you choose to display the text vertically, you may have problems displaying some of the characters.
Phrases in this document are not space-separated. However, it can be displayed after automatically inserting such space.
This document can be displayed with fully-annotated ruby. It is possible to display ruby only for kanji learned in 5th grade and above. It is also possible to hide all ruby.
