Start from the top, work down one directory at a time instead of all at once. Slowly build up a database. Speed isn’t strictly necessary if the data sets are quasi-static. Connections could also be parallelized.

  • GNU/Linux: /bin/ls -l --time-style +%s
  • macOS: /bin/ls -l -D %s
