Additions

  • Ability to use ball ammunition in the handgonne, which is barely capable of penetrating normal steel plate armor

Changes

Adjusted stats on blunderbuss shot:

  • Worse armor penetration, which is fine since ball ammunition can now do this role better
  • Inherited stats from blunderbuss ammo instead of 12 gauge
  • Increased warmup time to shoot
  • Removed one handed property
  • Made it load and fire one cartridge at a time instead of four

Reasoning

  • Handgonnes could fire ball too (which might have been more common), and larger bore ones seem like they had right around the required penetration to defeat moderate quality contemporary steel armor while high quality steel armor is barely able to resist penetration. While the historical penetration would have probably been about half of the RHA value used here, the rest of MO has this same scaling. These numbers should be consistent measured against stuff like existing arrow penetration and armor values in this patch, while the gun should be much worse than 5.56x45 guns in every other respect so the similar penetration will keep the expected realistic balance (does anyone use MO with modern mods anyways?).
  • Handgonnes were very finicky to use and not quick to fire, requiring both hands fiddling with priming powder and match cord. This is reflected in needing both hands and the long warmup time. Example of firing a reproduction: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m7kfCZgI3SA
  • There are already good black powder ammo bases to inherit from in CE, which seem like obvious choices for this.
  • Ammo choice in modern CE is fun and strategic, and pure medieval MO needs more ways to defeat armor since even plasteel arrow war bows only pen ~4.5mm RHA.

Testing

Check tests you have performed:

  • Compiles without warnings
  • Game runs without errors
  • (For compatibility patches) ...with and without patched mod loaded
  • Playtested in dev quicktest

Ultimately not a change I think we're interested in making at this time, especially with an overhaul of MO in the works.
