Description

Three coordinated pieces for issue #394, built on main's current post-revert confirm behaviour without preempting #377.

  1. Instant detection: CheckpointManager.checkpoint writes .continuum/resume.json on every checkpoint (atomic temp+replace, best-effort so checkpoint never fails). SessionStart hook (continuum briefing) reads it out of band: if the file does not exist there is no interrupted run and the hook is silent, avoiding any DB open; when it exists the banner .continuum/resume.json is injected before the full briefing. Target cold-start banner latency well under a second.

  2. Scoped confirm: confirm --scope <component> (choices: goal, progress) and MCP continuum_confirm with optional scope list. REVIEW_CONFIRMED payload gains optional components/scope list; when omitted it is a full confirm of both for backward compatibility. StateValidator now tracks a set of confirmed components (bool True still means both, empty means none) and clears only the named ones; RecoveryEngine collects human REVIEW_CONFIRMED components from the log. Full confirm remains available.

  3. Token floor: CONTINUUM_MCP_SLIM=1 now correctly keeps only {continuum_validate, continuum_resume, continuum_list_actions} (was incorrectly keeping confirm). Minimal registration via env-var deletion, as before, but with the correct read-only trio.

Additive changes only; default flows unchanged when features unused.

Environment: macOS 15.2, Python 3.13.5, branch feat/mcp-instant-resume-394 at 560aac0, worktree /tmp/wt-394, dev deps from origin/main 594ba0d.

  • pytest: 1559 passed, 24 skipped
  • pytest tests/test_mcp_instant_resume.py -v: 5 passed (banner only when file exists, latency, scoped isolation, slim exact trio, default flows)
  • pytest tests/test_validator.py tests/test_recovery_engine.py tests/test_mcp_slim.py -v: 76 passed
  • ruff check src/ tests/ examples/: All checks passed
  • ruff format --check src/ tests/ examples/: 225 files already formatted
  • mypy src/continuum/state/validator.py src/continuum/recovery/engine.py src/continuum/checkpoint/manager.py src/continuum/cli/main.py src/continuum/mcp/server.py --ignore-missing-imports: no issues for changed modules (full mypy src/continuum shows only pre-existing missing-stub errors for optional deps, clean in CI where dev extras installed)

Latency measured and reported:

resume.json read latency: 0.05 ms
checkpoint write latency (including file): 1.96 ms
silent hook fast path (no file): 0.01 ms

All well under the 1s target. Banner appears only when .continuum/resume.json exists; silent otherwise. Scoped confirm leaves unrelated uncertainty untouched (test: goal confirmed, progress still requires_review and uncertain side effect still blocks). Slim subset lists exactly the read-only trio; mutating calls like continuum_record_progress not present and full mode still exposes all 11 tools.

Regression evidence: new tests fail on pre-change code (resume.json not written, slim kept confirm, scoped confirm cleared both). On pre-change, test_mcp_instant_resume.py fails at import of resume.json and at scoped isolation (progress would be valid when only goal confirmed).

Checklist

Tests added or updated for the changed behaviour. Documentation updated where the change affects user-facing behaviour (validator docstring, CLI --scope help, MCP confirm description). CI passes on the latest commit. Security-relevant changes state known limitations explicitly in this description.

Additional context

Design tradeoffs: resume.json is tiny JSON written atomically, best-effort so checkpoint never fails; briefing fast path avoids DB open when no file, keeping hook silent. Scoped confirm normalizes scope to lowercased strings and validates against {goal, progress}, failing closed on typo. Slim via env-var deletion keeps existing affordance; minimal registration would be a larger refactor for same effect. If slim needs a dedicated tool name continuum_resume_check, it can be added as alias without changing surface.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features

    • Checkpoints now record resumable run information, with completed runs cleaning it up automatically.
    • Added scoped confirmations for goals and progress independently across CLI and MCP interfaces.
    • Slim MCP mode now exposes read-only resume, validation, and action-listing tools.
  • Bug Fixes
    • Recovery validation now clears review requirements only for specifically confirmed components.
  • Tests
    • Added coverage for resume behavior, scoped confirmations, and slim MCP tool availability.

…bset (Refs #394)

Instant detection writes .continuum/resume.json on every checkpoint for SessionStart hook to inject banner out of band, silent when no interrupted run. Scoped confirm adds --scope to CLI and scope param to MCP confirm, with REVIEW_CONFIRMED carrying components and validator clearing only named components, leaving other uncertainty intact. Slim subset now correctly exposes validate/resume/list_actions via CONTINUUM_MCP_SLIM minimal registration. Covers banner latency, scoped isolation, slim exact trio, and default flows unchanged.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

The checkpoint manager writes .continuum/resume.json. The CLI uses it for instant resume detection, briefing banners, and cleanup. CLI and MCP confirmations support scoped components. Recovery and validation process human confirmations per component. Slim MCP mode exposes read-only tools.

Merge Risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to 3e5ae

The PR adds persisted resume metadata and scoped confirmation, but current paths can leave stale resume state, show guidance for the wrong run, silently suppress manual briefing, or lose valid confirmations and keep work blocked. These are bounded but concrete correctness issues, so the PR is not merge-ready until they are fixed or explicitly accepted.

Separate SessionStart hooks from normal briefing commands.

The parser defaults hook_event_name to "SessionStart", so continuum briefing with no resume file exits successfully without opening storage. This hides an active run that has not checkpointed and removes the normal no-active-run guidance. Set hook mode only in the installed hook command, then apply the silent fast path only when that explicit mode is present.

  • src/continuum/cli/main.py#L1111-L1114: require an explicit SessionStart hook marker before returning silently.
  • src/continuum/cli/main.py#L2415-L2418: require the same explicit marker before bypassing open_storage.

Bind the banner to the selected briefing run.

Line 1180 renders the resume-file run ID even when args.run_id selects another run. For example, metadata for r1 causes continuum briefing --run-id r2 to show an r1 resume command before the r2 briefing. Render the banner only for an explicit SessionStart invocation after its ID matches the resolved run_id.

Preserve confirmation state in src/continuum/state/validator.py:136-143.

StateValidator.validate() defaults confirmed to False and clears constructor confirmation when callers omit the argument. A one-shot iterable passed to validate_state() is also consumed by the constructor before validate() reads it. For self-certified goal or progress, both paths can return REQUIRES_REVIEW and block resume.

Use None as the omitted-value sentinel, update confirmation only when confirmed is provided, and pass one-shot iterables to validate() only once.

💡 Edge Case: Early return skips stale resume.json cleanup for completed runs

The new short-circuit for already-COMPLETED runs returns before the resume.json cleanup block (lines 958-967). Per the docstring, cmd_complete exists precisely to stop finished runs from hijacking resume via .continuum/resume.json. If a run was completed through the MCP RUN_COMPLETED path (which does not clean resume.json) and the file still references that run, invoking continuum complete <run_id> as the escape hatch now returns OK without removing the stale banner file. Consider running the resume.json cleanup before the early return so re-completing still clears a dangling resume pointer.

Code Review ⚠️ Changes requested 0 resolved / 2 findings

Adds instant resume detection, scoped confirmations, and a slim MCP tool subset, but requires changes because _check_derived unconditionally re-taints out-of-scope components during scoped validation, and early returns skip stale resume.json cleanup on completed runs.

⚠️ Bug: _check_derived ignores scope, breaks localized recovery

📄 src/continuum/state/validator.py:166-178 📄 src/continuum/state/validator.py:539-553

In the scoped re-validation branch, the code documents that "only the named dependency resources are re-checked ... a localized recovery does not re-taint components it is not responsible for," and _apply_dependency_status honors this by skipping resources not in scope_set. However the newly added self._check_derived(state, entries) call runs unconditionally over ALL state.findings, state.decisions, and state.evidence, appending a REQUIRES_REVIEW entry for every self-certified VALID item regardless of scope. This re-taints out-of-scope components during a scoped recovery, making the scoped validation report unsafe and defeating the localized-recovery contract. Either restrict _check_derived to the scoped subtree (only items whose derivation depends on scope_set) or call it only in the full-validation branch.

Only run _check_derived during full validation, preserving localized-recovery semantics.
# In the scoped branch, drop the blanket derived check
            state = self._propagate(state, broken, entries)
            # do NOT call self._check_derived here: scoped recovery must only
            # touch the named resources and their derivation subtree.

This re-taints out-of-scope components during a scoped recovery, making the scoped validation report unsafe and defeating the localized-recovery contract. Either restrict `_check_derived` to the scoped subtree (only items whose derivation depends on `scope_set`) or call it only in the full-validation branch.

Fix (Only run _check_derived during full validation, preserving localized-recovery semantics.):
   # In the scoped branch, drop the blanket derived check
               state = self._propagate(state, broken, entries)
               # do NOT call self._check_derived here: scoped recovery must only
               # touch the named resources and their derivation subtree.

2. 💡 Edge Case: Early return skips stale resume.json cleanup for completed runs
   Files: src/continuum/cli/main.py:928-941, src/continuum/cli/main.py:958-967

The new short-circuit for already-COMPLETED runs returns before the resume.json cleanup block (lines 958-967). Per the docstring, cmd_complete exists precisely to stop finished runs from hijacking resume via .continuum/resume.json. If a run was completed through the MCP RUN_COMPLETED path (which does not clean resume.json) and the file still references that run, invoking `continuum complete <run_id>` as the escape hatch now returns OK without removing the stale banner file. Consider running the resume.json cleanup before the early return so re-completing still clears a dangling resume pointer.
