Goodbye GitHub 👋 (Maybe)

After 5 years of GitHub, it's finally time to say goodbye. Due to recent changes to how data is (mis-)handled on the GitHub platform, along with my growing hatred for Microsoft - a company that values its hip-pocket over its customers - I have decided I no longer want to deal with Microsoft, nor its shitty subsidiaries. Whilst I will continue to create Open Source software, it will not be hosted on GitHub, but rather on my own infrastructure. Over the next short while, I will proceed to PULL DOWN ALL MY GITHUB REPOSITORIES, public and private, off GitHub, and migrate it to a self-hosted Forgejo instance. These migrated repositories can be found at https://git.ditherdude.dev/DitherDude, and support for external integration (e.g. submitting a PR via your Codeberg account) is underway.

To be clear, I am not making all my code Closed Source, but rather hosting it on an infrastructure that I can assert complete control over, to the extent that I can pinpoint with ±1 inch accuracy precisely where all my data is hosted.

I urge all current GitHub users to reconsider what Microsoft is doing with your data - even the "private" repositories that Microsoft is totally not scraping too - and whether you feel comfortable with this.

What won't go

This account will stay up, and I will periodically check it for activity etc. I may create "ghost" repositories on this account to host releases/issues/etc for the code I will self-host (to make it easier for others to contribute), but I haven't decided for sure. Or maybe I will find self-hosting my git to not be what I want, so I may migrate back here to GitHub.
