Six Strategy Levels — The Simplest Way to Organize a B2B Business

One page. Reads in 60 seconds. A GTD-inspired framework that forces your 50,000-foot vision and your ground-level daily actions onto the same page. Used at Strategy Sprints and with every B2B client we work with.

Most founders either live at 50,000 feet (vision without execution) or at ground level (busy without direction). This framework builds on David Allen's GTD horizons and the Strategy Sprints Method. It forces both into the same page so every Next Action traces back to a Purpose.

The Six Levels

1 · PURPOSE — why we exist (rarely changes)
2 · VISION — 3-year picture (annual)
3 · GOALS — 12-month numbers (annual)
4 · AREAS — ongoing standards (always on)
5 · PROJECTS — this month's outcomes (monthly)
6 · NEXT ACTIONS — this week's moves (weekly)

Skip a level and the system leaks:

  • No Purpose → every pivot feels equally valid (nothing guides the no)
  • No Vision → Goals float without context
  • No Goals → Projects pile up without direction
  • No Areas → Projects starve the systems that feed them
  • No Projects → Next Actions drift into busywork
  • No Next Actions → Projects stay aspirational

Who this is for

  • B2B founders ($1M-$50M ARR) who feel both under-directed and over-busy
  • Solo consultants and small agency owners who need a single page that holds the whole business
  • Executive teams of 3-10 people who want to stop arguing about priorities and start shipping them
  • AI-native operators building agent systems and needing a human-readable source of truth for what the agents support

Why It Works

David Allen's GTD horizons exist because work breaks at the bridge between strategic intent and daily action. The six levels force both to coexist on one page — so every Next Action traces back to a Purpose.

AI agents collapse this further. When most projects are owned by agents, the human only needs to track the few things they personally own. Everything else stays on this page, reviewed weekly.

Install

Claude Code

git clone https://github.com/SimonTheSalesBooster/six-strategy-levels ~/code/six-strategy-levels
ln -s ~/code/six-strategy-levels/skills/project-health-check.md ~/.claude/commands/project-health-check.md

Any other runtime

Copy templates/strategy-page.md into Notion, Obsidian, Google Docs, or whatever you use. The framework is tool-agnostic.

How to Use It

Step 1 — Copy the template

templates/strategy-page.md is a fillable one-pager. Fill the six sections in order:

  • Purpose: one sentence
  • Vision: 3-5 sentences (end of year 3)
  • Goals: 3-5 bullets, numbers only
  • Areas: list your company domains + personal areas
  • Projects: this month's outcomes
  • Next Actions: link your task system

It should read top-to-bottom in under 60 seconds. If it doesn't, cut words.

Step 2 — Review it on a cadence

  • Projects: refresh at the start of each month
  • Goals: refresh quarterly
  • Vision: refresh annually
  • Purpose: refresh when everything else changes shape

Step 3 — Run the Project Health Check

The whole framework only works if Projects actually move. A monthly goal with no named owner, no next action, and no movement in seven days is not a project — it's wishful thinking on a page.

Run the 5-point Project Health Check twice a week (Tue + Thu):

  1. Named owner — a specific person or agent
  2. Live next action — on the dashboard right now, not implied
  3. Method defined — how it gets done, not just what
  4. Movement in last 7 days — or flagged as stalled
  5. Continuation mechanism — a scheduled agent or ritual, not willpower

If any one of the five fails, the project is yellow. If three fail, it's red.

See skills/project-health-check.md for a ready-to-use skill that runs this check automatically with Claude or ChatGPT.

FAQ

How is this different from GTD? GTD's horizons (Ground, Projects, Areas, Goals, Vision, Purpose) are the origin. Six Strategy Levels sharpens the definitions for small-to-mid B2B companies and adds an AI-friendly Project Health Check so agents can score project movement automatically.

Does this replace OKRs? No. Goals (level 3) can be expressed as OKRs if that works for your team. The framework sits above goals — it answers the "why" (Purpose) and the "how it shows up this week" (Next Actions).

Can I use this solo? Yes. It was designed for solo founders first. Teams of 3-10 adopt it next easily.

How do AI agents fit in? Assign each project an owner. If the owner is an agent (Anthony for sales, Greg for distribution, etc.), the Health Check measures agent output against the Project's intended outcome. See board-of-advisors.
