feat(menus): Menu chip row, hold Back to Hub and L1+R1 for Go to - #590
The West button becomes Menu. Above 240p, a screen's page actions sit on the page as a row of chips the Menu button focuses, so they can be seen before anyone goes looking for them.

The row sits under the header on the Hub (at the header margin) and under the title strip elsewhere. Its band comes out of the content's budget only on screens that have chips.
Chips are borderless text in the label color, led by the Menu button glyph. One accent ring glides and resizes between chips and carries the tile focus zoom.
Only Menu enters the row; the d-pad never walks into it, so grid wrap and paging are unchanged. Left/Right walk the chips, Accept runs one, Back/Menu/Down return to the content. While the row has focus the content shows no ring, zoom, tint or caption.
A chip opens the same picker its Menu list row does; backing out returns focus to the chip.
At 240p, on the CRT head of a dual-head pair, and with the new Settings > Appearance > Show Menu row off, Menu opens the Menu list instead. The setting is persisted as show_menu_row (on by default; state from before the setting keeps the row) and mirrored to frontend.toml.
Input
Hold Back to Hub. A tap on a screen goes back one level when Back comes up; held for half a second it goes straight to the Hub with no stop on the way. Back that closes a modal, leaves the chip row or deletes text still acts on press, and the Hub is unchanged.
L1+R1 opens Go to on a ready browse list. On that screen a shoulder press waits 50 ms for its partner before it pages.
Go to
Opens on the letter the selection is in.
The panel sizes to its content, and a button is never larger than a full alphabet's would be, so a handful of sections no longer produces huge buttons.
Letter and count stack by font size, so the count stays on the button face at 240p (it was drawn over the bottom edge).
Other
Entering Systems paints the focused tile's zoomed logo from the first frame on MiSTer. The entry tile's zoomed copy is warmed, and prepared before the route commits if still missing.
The sizing golden fixture's Hub rows above 240p lose the chip band, with a note in the fixture header.
Testing
just test passes. New route tests cover the chip row, the More chip, the setting, tap vs hold Back, the L1+R1 chord and the zoomed logo on Systems entry; new unit tests cover the sizing rule, the config round trip, the letter cell cap and the logo cache insert.
just lint fails only on RUSTSEC-2026-0414 (pulldown-cmark), an upstream advisory unrelated to this change.
Tested on a MiSTer over HDMI.
Not in this PR
Moving focus inside the Systems grid can still show a newly focused tile's logo at its resting size for one frame.
On a DualShock 4 (054c:09cc) with no menu button map, Main_MiSTer's default mapping sends PageDown for L1 and nothing for R1, so paging and L1+R1 need the pad remapped. That's a Main_MiSTer mapping issue.
Added an optional Menu chip row with screen-specific actions and keyboard/controller navigation. The row is enabled by default above 240p and can be turned off in Appearance settings.
Menu opens the chip row when available; otherwise it opens the Menu list. Back and shoulder-button shortcuts now support holding Back to return to the Hub and pressing both shoulders to open Go to.
Go to opens at the letter containing the current selection, with improved layout and clearer loading, error, and empty states.
Documentation
Updated navigation and controller guidance to use Menu terminology and describe the chip row.
The West button is now Menu. Above 240p a screen's page actions sit on
the page as a row of chips under the header or title strip (Hub: Add
item, More; Games: Go to, Tags, Search here; Favorites: Sort, Group by,
Random game, More; Favorite systems: Group by; Search results: Add to
Hub). Menu focuses the row; the d-pad never walks into it, so grid wrap
and paging are unchanged. At 240p, on the CRT head of a dual-head pair,
and with Settings > Appearance > Show Menu row off, Menu opens the same
actions as the Menu list.
- Chips are borderless text in the label color, led by the Menu glyph.
One accent ring glides and resizes between chips and carries the tile
focus zoom. While the row has focus the content shows no selection.
- Show Menu row is persisted (`show_menu_row`, on by default; older
state keeps the row) and mirrored to frontend.toml. Off, the row's
band goes back to the content at every tier.
- Back tapped on a screen goes back one level on release; held for half
a second it goes straight to the Hub. Back that closes a modal, leaves
the row or deletes text still acts on press.
- L1+R1 together open Go to on a ready browse list; a shoulder press
waits 50 ms for its partner before it pages.
- Go to opens on the letter the selection is in, sizes its panel to its
content, caps a button at a full alphabet's size and stacks letter and
count by font size so the count stays on the face at 240p.
- Entering Systems paints the focused tile's zoomed logo from the first
frame: the entry tile's zoomed copy is warmed, and prepared before the
route commits if it is still missing.
- "View" is renamed "Menu" in labels, docs and catalogs; three CRT
calibration strings that shipped untranslated now have translations.

Walkthrough
This pull request adds a screen-level Menu chip row, persists a show_menu_row setting, changes page-menu naming from View to Menu, updates Back and shoulder input handling, adjusts Go to and Systems logo behavior, and refreshes tests, snapshots, docs, and translations.
Changes: Menu row, Menu naming, and input handling
Adds shared page-bar rules, menu-row sizing fields, and the persisted show_menu_row setting. Renames the resolved button field from view to menu. Exposes Menu-row labels and settings text in UI contracts.
Frontend page-bar rendering and routing rust/frontend/src/{page_bar,lib,router,hub,games,systems,settings,dual_head,press_feedback,sizing}.rs, rust/frontend/ui/{app,focus}.slint, rust/zaparoo-app/src/hub.rs, rust/frontend/src/route_motion.rs
Adds the frontend page-bar adapter and renders Menu chip rows on Hub, Systems, and Games. Menu can focus the row when available, with dual-head fallback to the Menu list. Routing, focus, layout sync, help text, and tests now account for row state and Menu terminology.
Back hold and shoulder chord input flow rust/zaparoo-app/src/input.rs, rust/frontend/src/{input,host,gamepad,router}.rs, rust/frontend/src/route_motion.rs
Adds pending Back-hold and shoulder-chord state. A short Back press still routes CANCEL on release. A held Back can route to Hub through go_home. A PageUp/PageDown chord can open Go to on eligible Games lists.
Go to picker and Systems logo preparation rust/zaparoo-app/src/letter_jump.rs, rust/zaparoo-app/src/logo_cache.rs, rust/frontend/src/{system_logos,systems,games,router,sizing}.rs, rust/frontend/ui/app.slint, rust/frontend/src/route_motion.rs, rust/frontend/src/bin/snapshot.rs
The Go to picker now sizes cells through shared sizing rules and can open on the bucket for the current selection. Systems can synchronously prepare focused logos and include focus-bounds data in warming and cache identity. Related tests and snapshot fixtures were updated.
Documentation now describes Menu, the Menu chip row, Back hold, and shoulder shortcuts. Translation catalogs and the POT refresh Menu-row and Menu terminology. Snapshot fixtures and render scripts add Menu-row scenarios and related screens.

Explanation
The title names the three main changes: a Menu chip row (the West-to-Menu button change and the chip row above 240p), hold-Back-to-Hub, and L1+R1 for Go to. The raw summary confirms each of these is in the changeset. The title is specific and concise, but it omits the Go to panel sizing and the Systems logo warm-up, which are secondary.
Full details: Description check
Explanation
The description follows the template's main sections: Summary (the opening paragraph), Screenshots/recordings, Test plan, and related notes. It explains the Menu chip row, input changes, Go to changes, and other work in detail. The Motivation section is absent, but it is optional and the description links issue #121 in its closing line. The Screenshots/recordings section is missing even though the template marks it as required for visual changes. The Checklist section is also missing. The description does not say whether 720p and 240p screenshots were captured, and it does not confirm the lint/ARM32/@tr checklist items. Reviewers need these before merge.
Resolution
Add a Screenshots / recordings section with 720p and 240p captures of the Menu chip row, Go to panel, and Hub page bar (the template requires them for visual changes; just snapshots can render them). Add a Checklist section that states the status of each item: just lint (the description reports a failure on RUSTSEC-2026-0414, so state whether that is accepted), just test, the software-renderer dirty region check for the overlay and animation changes, the ARM32/MiSTer consideration, the @tr() and just tr-extract check for new user-visible strings, and the CLA item if it applies. Consider adding a Motivation line that links issue #121 directly.
Full details: Out of Scope Changes check
Explanation
The PR includes substantial changes unrelated to [#121]'s Back hold requirement. These changes add the Menu chip row and show_menu_row, the L1+R1 Go to chord and Go to sizing, Systems logo preparation, View-to-Menu catalog changes, and snapshot and layout updates. The related tests and documentation do not make these separate feature implementations part of [#121].
Resolution
Remove the unrelated feature implementations from this PR or split them into separate PRs with the corresponding linked issues. Keep the [#121] PR limited to Back tap and hold navigation and its supporting tests.
Full details: Docstring Coverage
Explanation
Docstring coverage is 70.97% which is insufficient. The required threshold is 80.00%. Docstring coverage is scoped to functions touched by this diff with cyclomatic complexity of at least 2. Documentation-only edits and deletions within surviving functions are included; unchanged diff context and fully deleted functions are excluded. Analyzed 93 functions across 31 files. (17 skipped: 17 unsupported.)
Resolution
Write docstrings for the functions missing them to satisfy the coverage threshold.
Full details: Linked Issues check
Explanation
For [#121], the implementation shows the required Back rules. It arms the hold only for the configured cancel action away from Hub and owned surfaces. It routes a short release one level back. It routes a live hold to go_home. stop_repeat clears pending Back state on input loss. go_home cancels a pending transition. The available test evidence confirms tap-versus-hold coverage, but it does not establish automated coverage for window-focus loss, forward-transition handling, configured cancel mappings, modal cancellation, or the Hub hold case listed by [#121].
Resolution
The missing evidence is focused automated-test coverage, or equivalent reviewable test results, for the [#121] cases not identified above.

Store the synchronous result when the same key is running.
If the background worker is preparing the focused logo, this branch discards the result from Logos::prepare_now. That method still returns Some, so Systems rerenders before entry. The rerender reads an empty cache and cannot show the prepared focus logo on the first frame. Store the result without clearing running; let the worker completion clear that slot. Add a test for insertion while the same key is running. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Update the same-key branch in the logo cache so it stores the synchronous result
from Logos::prepare_now without clearing self.running; leave that slot for the
worker completion to clear. Add a test verifying the result is inserted while
the same key is running.

- A Back held over the pairing or Online panels is theirs, not a hold
to the Hub, so their own cleanup runs.
- The HDMI head of a dual-head pair no longer draws a chip row it could
never focus: Sizing.menu-row-blocked keeps both heads on the Menu list.
The process-wide dual-head flag it replaces is gone.
- A logo prepared on the spot while the worker runs the same key is now
kept, so the zoomed focus logo is there on the first frame.
