feat(api): abort signal support for requesty (completePrompt + shared helpers) - #1537
Adds abort-signal support to the Requesty provider's completePrompt plus the shared abort-signal helper (round 1 of the abort-signal series).
Supersedes #1301 (split B, part 1 of 2).#1301's combined gateway-a diff measured 1139 a+d ??over the 1000 hard line-budget cap ??so the Requesty portion lands as two stacked PRs. This PR carries the shared helper + completePrompt portion: +501/??6 = 527 a+d across 4 files, measured against main @ 0dbd5846f. The unit lands above the 400 soft design target because the helper's kill tests (withSettleGuard settle-race coverage) and the completePrompt abort handling are inseparable: the helper exists only for the phases these changes add, and splitting the helper from its coverage would orphan the kill tests. Measured number and rationale recorded here per the line-budget skill.
completePrompt
Accepts CompletePromptOptions (abortSignal and/or timeoutMs) and forwards them to the OpenAI SDK client: RequestOptions.signal / RequestOptions.timeout are included only when actually set; timeoutMs <= 0 never passes 0 to the SDK (the SDK treats 0 as an immediate abort). The client-level timeout remains the default safety net.
If the caller's signal aborts (or the per-request timeout fires) while the request is in flight, the provider rejects with a DOM-standard AbortError (error.name === "AbortError").
If the request resolves after the abort, the late result is discarded and AbortError is thrown instead.
The cancellation scope is established before model lookup: a pre-aborted call rejects promptly via throwIfAborted(), and a call aborted while model metadata is loading rejects through the shared rejectOnAbort() helper (below). No options remains fully backward compatible (no signal/timeout forwarded to the SDK).
Shared helper
src/api/providers/utils/abort-signal.ts ??extends the merged helper with rejectOnAbort(pending, signal, providerName): awaits pending but rejects with the provider's abort error when signal aborts first. For async phases with no native signal support (model discovery) that must still settle promptly on cancellation; the abort listener is detached once pending settles (success or failure).
abort-signal.spec.ts ??withSettleGuard-wrapped tests for the new helper paths (settle-race coverage: the guard races the settle handler so an unguarded-hang mutant fails fast instead of timing out).
Tests
completePrompt: signal/timeout pass-through, timeoutMs <= 0 handling, backward compatibility without options, pre-aborted reject, mid-flight abort reject, missing/aborted request-signal fail-fast, late-result discard; existing completePrompt assertions adapted to the new two-argument create(params, options) call.
Mutation-diff gate (local, base 0dbd5846f ??head d298d4a6f): 43 valid ??42 killed, 1 timeout (abort-signal.ts:112:45 BlockStatement, the settle-handler race window; ??0 and ??5% of valid), 0 Survived, 0 NoCoverage, 2 Ignored (directed BooleanLiteral/ObjectLiteral on the settle handler, which detaches its own listener).
createMessage bridging and its kill tests land in the stacked follow-up PR #1538 (part 2 of 2).
Part of the abort-signal series (round 1). Builds on #674, #901, #1008. Addresses #404. Supersedes #1301 (split B).
Requests can be cancelled with a caller-provided signal or a positive timeout, including while model information is being retrieved.
Requests cancelled before they begin stop immediately, and results that arrive after cancellation are discarded.
Requests without cancellation options continue to work, and zero timeouts are ignored.
Bug Fixes
Cancellation and timeout failures are consistently reported as abort errors, while other completion failures retain their existing handling.
RequestyHandler.completePrompt handles caller abort signals and positive timeouts during model lookup and completion. It forwards cancellation options to the OpenAI SDK, rejects late responses after cancellation, and preserves non-abort error handling.

Summary
Cancellation during model lookup src/api/providers/requesty.ts, src/api/providers/__tests__/requesty.spec.ts
completePrompt checks for pre-aborted calls and normalizes abort-related lookup failures. Tests cover cancellation during lookup and non-abort lookup errors.
Completion request options and outcomes src/api/providers/requesty.ts, src/api/providers/__tests__/requesty.spec.ts
The completion request forwards merged signals and positive timeouts. Abort failures and late responses reject with the Requesty abort error. Tests cover client options, in-flight cancellation, timeouts, late responses, listener cleanup, and ordinary SDK failures.

Merge Risk: Minimal · up to 53003
The cancellation implementation has no established merge-blocking defect. The remaining suggestions strengthen regression coverage for error classification and listener cleanup.
Security architecture risk: Low · up to a0173
Cancellation handling is narrowly scoped and does not appear to expand credential access or service exposure. It rejects cancelled callers promptly, but already-started model discovery can continue. Deployment-specific cancellation and isolation guarantees remain unverified.
Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
inferred — The identified changed control scope is the caller's Requesty completion operation. Continuing discovery can affect existing shared metadata caches, but the PR does not establish new tenant, credential, tool or deployment authority.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
inferred — Caller cancellation is not revocation of already-started discovery or its cache writes. The control boundary rejects the caller and prevents continuation into completion when cancellation wins during lookup; completion cancellation relies on the forwarded SDK signal, with an additional guard against returning late results.
Resilience and Maintainability Implications
observed — Existing model-cache coordination deduplicates concurrent discovery, guards cleanup by flight identity, and detaches waiters idempotently. Requesty cancellation does not propagate to that waiter machinery, so discovery remains governed by its existing settlement and catalog-timeout controls rather than the completion caller's lifetime.

Full details: Security Boundaries
Explanation
No changed path meets a security failure condition. src/api/providers/requesty.ts:262-342 only adds cancellation handling and validated SDK timeout forwarding. It still uses the existing fetchModel() and getModel() selection path, and it sends prompt as message content rather than executing it. The diff introduces no secret or PII logging, input execution, or approval/allowlist bypass.
Full details: Persistence Integrity
Explanation
No changed persistence path is present. The production diff changes only Requesty cancellation, model lookup, and completion handling. completePrompt awaits the cancellation wrapper, and the existing model-cache path still awaits writeModels; no changed write, rollback, persisted default, or non-atomic persistence operation is introduced.
Full details: Regression Evidence
Explanation
The prior regression remains. completePrompt races fetchModel() with rejectOnAbort in the changed requesty.ts. The Requesty test only keeps model lookup pending forever (requesty.spec.ts:853-882), and helper coverage only checks a rejecting promise when the signal is already aborted (abort-signal.spec.ts:51-79). No focused test aborts after lookup starts, then rejects that lookup, and verifies the provider AbortError plus no unhandled rejection.
Resolution
Add a focused Requesty integration or rejectOnAbort test with a deferred model-lookup promise. Start the request, wait for lookup start, abort, reject the deferred lookup, assert the returned promise rejects with name: "AbortError" and the provider message, and observe unhandledRejection to confirm the late lookup rejection is consumed.
Full details: Lifecycle Resource Cleanup
Explanation
The changed cancellation path still leaks the underlying Requesty model-catalog flight. completePrompt now races this.fetchModel() with rejectOnAbort at src/api/providers/requesty.ts:281-285, so an abort can reject completePrompt while fetchModel() continues. fetchModel() calls getModels(...) without signal at lines 107-118. On an uncached lookup, modelCache therefore joins the flight without a caller signal (modelCache.ts:280-347), keeps its waiter, and does not abort the provider fetch when the caller aborts. The fetch can continue until the 15-second catalog bound and can still populate the cache after cancellation. The Requesty abort test mocks getModels (requesty.spec.ts:46-122, 853-882), so it does not verify this underlying lifecycle.
Resolution
Thread requestAbortSignal through completePrompt to fetchModel(signal), and pass signal in the getModels options. Preserve model-cache single-flight behavior so the signal detaches only this waiter and aborts the shared Requesty fetch when it is the last waiter. Add an integration-level test with an uncached Requesty lookup that aborts during discovery and verifies waiter detachment and provider-fetch cancellation.

Guard late model-lookup results before updating this.models.
If a caller aborts during this.fetchModel() and starts another completion on the same RequestyHandler, rejectOnAbort rejects only the wrapper. The underlying lookup still completes and fetchModel() still assigns this.models. That late result can overwrite a newer lookup and change the model parameters used by a later request.
Propagate requestAbortSignal into the model fetch if supported. Otherwise, guard the cache write with a request-generation check before accepting the result.

The name assertion alone only proves that a TimeoutError did not reach handleOpenAIError; it does not pin the complete abort contract. Assert the provider-specific message the sibling cancellation tests use.
Review follow-up: an ordinary API error while a live external signal or per-request timeout is configured must stay a provider failure, not an AbortError. requesty.spec 36 passed.
Added an it.each over a live external signal and a live per-request timeout: with the SDK rejecting an ordinary Error("API Error"), the completion error must remain a provider failure (not AbortError). This pins the catch's requestAbortSignal?.aborted condition — changing it to a truthiness check on the configured signal would fail these tests.
Note: CodeRabbit is an incremental review system and does not re-review already reviewed commits. This command is applicable only when automatic reviews are paused.
Lint follow-up: the per-request timeout is validated with hasUsableTimeout and rounded/capped with toSdkTimeoutMs instead of forwarding the raw value (SDKs treat 0 as an immediate abort and reject fractional/non-finite values). Added the two helpers to the branch abort-signal utils. requesty + abort-signal specs 69 passed; eslint 0; tsc clean.
upstream/main already provides hasUsableTimeout/toSdkTimeoutMs/MAX_TIMEOUT_MS, so the branch-local copies are removed; requesty keeps using the shared helpers. requesty + abort-signal specs 80 passed.

302-302: Stability & Availability
The cancellation path in completePrompt depends on the retry behavior of openai@5.23.2. That behavior is not established.
Inspection confirms that create() is awaited without a race against requestAbortSignal (src/api/providers/requesty.ts:302). Whether that matters depends on whether the locked SDK sleeps through an abort during Retry-After backoff. The public evidence shows that main had this bug until PR #2581 merged on Sep 16, 2026. It does not show the state of the v5 line. The installed SDK source for 5.23.2 was not available in the sandbox, and no retrieved v5 source or backport resolved it.
Two cancellation gaps in completePrompt:
1. The SDK signal was not detachable. mergeAbortSignalAndTimeout() returns the
caller's signal unchanged when timeoutMs is not usable, and openai@5.23.2
attaches its abort listener to whichever signal it receives and leaves it
attached after the request completes, so reusing one caller signal retained
one listener and one per-request controller per completed request. The caller
signal is now bridged with bridgeExternalAbortSignal, the SDK receives the
per-request signal, and dispose() runs in a finally covering model lookup and
completion alike - completion, failure, abort, and late result.
2. The completion was not raced against the cancellation scope. openai@5.23.2
does not observe the signal inside retryRequest: it sleeps for the backoff (or
a server retry-after-ms, up to about a minute) before issuing the next
attempt, so awaiting the SDK call alone could hold completePrompt open long
after the caller cancelled. The create() call now goes through rejectOnAbort,
the same shape the model lookup above already uses.
Tests (requesty.spec.ts, completePrompt):
- settles on abort while the SDK is sleeping between retries instead of waiting
for the completion
- detaches the abort listener from the caller's signal when the completion finishes
- detaches the abort listener from the caller's signal when the completion fails
- does not leave the SDK's abort listener on the caller's signal after a
completed request (the mock emulates the SDK leaving its listener attached)
"should pass abort signal through to client" now asserts the contract the bridge
provides - the SDK receives a per-request signal that tracks the caller's abort -
instead of identity with the caller's own signal.
Negative controls (each restored byte-identically afterwards):
- dropping the race fails exactly the retry-sleep test:
"expected Error: settle guard timed out after 500ms to match object { name: 'AbortError', ... (1) }".
- dropping the bridge fails the pass-through test ("expected AbortSignal { aborted: false }
not to be AbortSignal { aborted: false }") and the leak test ("expected true to be false").
- keeping the bridge but emptying the finally fails the two detach tests

… fallback
Rerunning the unit mutation preflight after the completePrompt fix left three
mutants on lines the rewrite touches, none of them reachable by the previous
tests:
- ConditionalExpression at requesty.ts:333 (the post-completion abort check,
replaced by false) survived because the new race settles at the abort, so no
test still reached that check. "discards a completion that resolves in the same
turn the caller aborts" makes the SDK win the race outright - it returns an
already-resolved response and aborts from a handler queued one step ahead of the
provider's continuation - and asserts the value is still discarded. Control:
deleting the check fails exactly that test with
"promise resolved \"'late'\" instead of rejecting".
- StringLiteral at requesty.ts:337 (the || "" fallback) was NoCoverage.
- OptionalChaining at requesty.ts:337 (choices[0]?.message) survived.
"returns an empty string when the completion carries an empty message content /
no choices at all" covers both: the string mutant fails both cases with
"expected 'Stryker was here!' to be ''", the optional-chain mutant fails the
no-choices case with "Cannot read properties of undefined (reading 'message')".
requesty.spec.ts 46/46 green; eslint --max-warnings=0, prettier --check and src
tsc --noEmit clean; no suppression and no Stryker directive added.
Add a live-signal completion test for an SDK AbortError rejection.
completePrompt treats a completion rejection as an abort only when the forwarded signal is aborted. Otherwise, handleOpenAIError wraps it as a new Error. The only live-signal completion test rejects with a plain Error. The aborted-signal tests cover the other branch. No test rejects with an AbortError-named error while the signal stays live, so a change to name-based classification would pass the suite. Add a test for that case and assert the wrapped error is not named AbortError.

Add a completion test using RequestyHandler.completePrompt where the SDK rejects
with an error named AbortError while the caller’s signal remains live. Assert
the rejection is wrapped as an Error whose name is not AbortError, preserving
the signal-based classification handled by completePrompt and handleOpenAIError.

Add listener-removal assertions to the lookup-abort test.
The bridge listener is detached in the finally at requesty.ts:338-342. That block also runs when the caller aborts during model lookup, because lookup runs inside the same try. The current code releases the listener on this path. The lookup-abort test checks only the rejection and that mockCreate was not called. The listener-removal tests cover completion and provider failure only. A future change that moves lookup out of the guarded block, or that skips the detach on lookup exits, would still pass the current suite.
Add the same add and remove identity check to the lookup-abort test:

Adds abort-signal support to the Requesty provider's
completePromptplus the shared abort-signal helper (round 1 of the abort-signal series).Supersedes #1301 (split B, part 1 of 2). #1301's combined gateway-a diff measured 1139 a+d ??over the 1000 hard line-budget cap ??so the Requesty portion lands as two stacked PRs. This PR carries the shared helper +
completePromptportion: +501/??6 = 527 a+d across 4 files, measured againstmain@0dbd5846f. The unit lands above the 400 soft design target because the helper's kill tests (withSettleGuardsettle-race coverage) and thecompletePromptabort handling are inseparable: the helper exists only for the phases these changes add, and splitting the helper from its coverage would orphan the kill tests. Measured number and rationale recorded here per the line-budget skill.completePrompt
