fix(webview): show modes skeleton until view state loads (vps2 F7) - #1567
Draft PR — vps2 unit F7 (modes skeleton until view state loads).
Tracking: fork issue 41 (vps2 series ledger). Upstream issue: #1566 (this series' gap record; the original upstream bug is #915). Port source: upstream PR #928 (fix(webview): add loading skeleton for view state initialization) — closed/superseded; the fork issue 41 ledger names it as the F7 port source (webview-ui sections only).
webview-ui/src/context/ExtensionStateContext.tsx — the viewStateLoaded plumbing: interface field + setViewStateLoaded, the useState (initial false), setViewStateLoaded(true) right after setDidHydrateState(true) in the state-message handler, and both on the context value.
webview-ui/src/components/modes/ModesView.tsx — the loading skeleton (data-testid modes-view-loading-skeleton, aria-busy) returned while viewStateLoaded is false, before the main return, so the modes surface never flashes stale mode/profile text during view-state initialization.
webview-ui/src/components/modes/tests/ModesView.spec.tsx — the mock fields + the "shows a loading skeleton while view-local state is initializing" test (skeleton testid present, mode-select-trigger absent, stale mode/profile text absent).
webview-ui/src/context/tests/ExtensionStateContext.spec.tsx — the TestComponent wiring + 3 tests: initializes false; true after the first state message; setViewStateLoaded callable.
webview-ui/src/App.tsx — the bare webviewDidLaunch useEffect deleted; the payload-carrying webviewDidLaunch post already lives in ExtensionStateContext.tsx (F1c) and is untouched. This hunk was planned for F1c but shipped without it; it is functionally part of the upstream bug fix.
webview-ui/src/tests/App.spec.tsx — the getViewStateId mock field in the vscode mock factory.
src-side coverage carried from the stack lineage (this unit's earlier rounds): the focusInput instance-lookup guard + its two registerCommands.spec tests, the delete-profile prune tests in ClineProvider.spec, the sticky-profile suite, and the profile-deletion comment fix in ClineProvider.ts.
Upstream main 496bd11 merged (this round): 8 conflicts reconciled with both-sides review. App.tsx keeps main's new webviewDidFocus interaction listener while webviewDidLaunch stays removed (ExtensionStateContext posts it once the view state is hydrated; re-posting in App would double the launch message). The refreshed F5/F6 lineage content (fresh-tab createClineTabPanel surface, view-identity fixes, api-spec factory args, tracker constructor args) is carried in; the three new ClineProvider constructions in the delete-profile tests pass the shared tracker.
Budget
Unit delta vs the stack base: 6 webview-ui files, +96/-5 (plus the src-side coverage carried from earlier rounds of this unit). The PR diff vs upstream/main is larger because the branch is stacked on the unmerged F1-F6 series; the series merges bottom-up, at which point each PR's CI gate measures its own unit. The CI mutation-diff changed-line advisory is a by-construction artifact of the stacked diff.
How to test
pnpm --dir webview-ui test src/components/modes/__tests__/ModesView.spec.tsx — the skeleton test.
pnpm --dir webview-ui test src/context/__tests__/ExtensionStateContext.spec.tsx — the viewStateLoaded lifecycle tests.
pnpm --dir webview-ui test src/__tests__/App.spec.tsx — launch/focus message wiring.
pnpm --dir src test src/activate/__tests__/registerCommands.spec.ts — the focusInput tab-priority guard tests.
eslint --max-warnings=0 clean on all touched files; eslint-suppressions unchanged (ClineProvider.spec.ts stays at 194; no count increased).
tsc: only 2 local-only errors remain (donor @roo-code/telemetry dist predates the 4-arg captureConsecutiveMistakeError signature; CI builds from source).
Negative control: disabling the skeleton gate reddens ModesView "shows a loading skeleton while view-local state is initializing"; restored byte-exact (sha256 match).
Prettier: full-repo check passes on the PR merge tree (re-verified at the current head).
The apps/vscode-e2e suites (incl. the view-state suite touched by this series) run in CI; they need the real extension host and are not runnable in this local environment.
App.tsx: kept main's webviewDidFocus interaction listener; webviewDidLaunch stays removed (single launch post from ExtensionStateContext).
Carried in the refreshed F5/F6 lineage: fresh-tab createClineTabPanel surface reconciled with main's typed options + shared WebviewFocusTracker, the view-identity review fixes with this series' setValue mode validation / corrupt-entry pruning / mutation-marker load-merge semantics, the restored viewStateReadiness/isDisposed members, api-spec ClineProviderFactory args, and the tracker constructor args across the specs.
The three new ClineProvider constructions in this unit's delete-profile tests now pass the shared tracker.
eslint-suppressions unchanged.
(Second commit 7f5ed4e) Ported the F6 adaptation of main's api-start-new-task.spec.ts to this unit's fresh-tab design (mocks the registerCommands createClineTabPanel function, asserts the exact tracker-carrying payload, pins the factory out of the tab path).
(Third commit 94e7742) Committed the WebviewFocusTracker argument for this unit's three delete-profile test constructions (CI check-types caught that the fix had not been staged into the merge commit).
(Fourth commit 109f821) Prettier-formatted those constructions (CI format:check).
Series mechanics
PR base is main; the branch is stacked on the F6 head; merge order F1a -> F1b -> F1c -> F2 -> F3 -> F4 -> F5 -> F6 -> F7.
CS not-ported register (for consistency): kimi-code OAuth try/catch + routerModels.spec +29; ApiConfigManager min-w-0->grow; ApiConfigManager.visual.tsx deletion + 2 PNG baselines; mojibake comment; providers/, .coderabbit.yaml, .github/, CONTRIBUTING.md, .gitignore churn — none of these touch the files in this PR.
AT-HEAD thread 4251997133 (Trivial, maintainability): the three temporary-id tests now dispose their providers in finally (constructor registers into the static activeInstances), restore the rejecting globalState.update stub in finally, and await the constructor's loadViewState promise instead of a fixed 10 ms sleep; the CloudService double gained on/off for dispose. Proofs: sticky-mode 30/30, eslint clean, prettier gate ALL-MATCHED; test-only change, no mutation control applies.
AT-HEAD thread 4251997137 (Minor, functional correctness) argued: the modes skeleton is unreachable by design because webviewDidLaunch awaits setViewStateId -> loadViewState before the first state post, so viewStateLoaded flipping with didHydrateState is accurate and no wrong-mode frame exists; pre-gating the skeleton would flash it on every boot regardless of the active tab. Details in the thread reply.
CI re-trigger: head fa68982 is an empty commit over 7537805 (no content change) to re-run the flaky e2e-mock lane (known 30s-timeout flake); all verification numbers above apply unchanged.
Security Boundaries / view-state id rows: addressed at 3fd9e42. setViewStateId now rejects non-string ids (crafted postMessage), bounds the key length (MAX_VIEW_STATE_ID_LENGTH), and refuses ids already owned by another live instance; a refused view stays on its temporary id against shared state. Regression tests: non-string, oversized, claimed-by-another-view. Negative controls: disabling the ownership check reddens exactly the claim test; widening the length bound reddens exactly the oversized test; restores byte-exact (hash match).
All three refusal paths resolve viewStateReadiness, so API-driven task creation never falls through to its timeout when a registration is refused.
The spec gained an afterEach clearing the static instance registry (suites construct providers directly and never dispose most of them; leaked instances would claim ids ahead of later tests).
Persistence Integrity setValues/setValue ordering rows: verified already addressed by the pushed code: _saveViewLocalStateFromMutation persists the non-secret subset before updating the buffer; the re-key is a single queued write (no delete-then-write window; authorship clears only after the write lands); the mutation hook keeps the buffer synced across setValue/setValues and profile upsert/activation/deletion.
Vertex credential exposure via loadViewState: addressed by design - persisted viewStates entries carry only mode + currentApiConfigName (non-secret subset); loadViewState resolves the profile into the in-memory buffer, which reaches the webview through the existing ExtensionState apiConfiguration channel, and logs name the profile only. No secret is written to workspace storage.
Proofs at 3fd9e42: sticky-mode 33/33; eslint --max-warnings=0 clean; tsc clean except the two known local telemetry-dist noise lines; prettier merge-ref gate ALL-MATCHED.
Non-activating saves (upsertProviderProfile with activate=false, and the zoo-gateway callback's non-active path) rewrote the profile on disk but left pinned views serving the pre-save snapshot; the non-activating branch now refreshes pinned sibling views (and this view when it holds the pin), and the callback routes through upsertProviderProfile so the refresh cannot be forgotten.
getState() no longer spreads the pinned overlay over the shared provider settings (a key the profile never defined leaked in from the shared profile: model id, region, tuning). The overlay is a complete snapshot: used in place, with only apiProvider falling back to shared state.
Regression tests: "refreshes views pinned to a profile saved without activation"; "does not leak shared provider keys into a pinned view's api configuration; the zoo-gateway callback test asserts the upsert path.
Negative controls: dropping the else-branch refresh reddens exactly the refresh test, reverting the merge semantics reddens exactly the leak test; restores byte-exact (hash match).
Proofs at 5bcc785: ClineProvider.spec green, sticky-mode and webviewMessageHandler green, eslint --max-warnings=0 clean, tsc clean except the two known local telemetry-dist noise lines, prettier merge-ref gate ALL-MATCHED.
Follow-up: overlay read from the view buffer (required-lane fix)
The previous round's overlay-completeness change read the overlay from the merged state values, which also carry the raw apiConfiguration state key. That key is a partial patch written by shared-store paths, not a view snapshot: with no overlay present and the raw key partial, getState() served only the partial object and dropped the shared provider settings the previous merge produced (the parallel-mode activation tests caught exactly this - the activated profile's model id vanished; required lane red on the units carrying that spec). The overlay is now read from the view buffer itself, where a present value is by contract a complete profile and an absent one means the shared store serves the settings.
Proofs: ClineProvider.parallelMode.spec green where present (the six synchronization tests that regressed), ClineProvider.spec green including the overlay-completeness tests, sticky-mode and webviewMessageHandler green; negative control: reverting the overlay to a shallow merge over the shared settings still reddens exactly the leak test; restores byte-exact (hash match); eslint --max-warnings=0 clean; tsc clean except the two known local telemetry-dist noise lines; prettier merge-ref gate ALL-MATCHED.
Follow-up: active task handlers rebuilt on non-activating saves (head 268bb11)
A review round on the view-identity unit found that the non-activating-save refresh updated pinned views' buffers but not their active tasks' API handlers, and the posted state prefers the task's own apiConfiguration: a conversation running in a view pinned to the saved profile kept sending the old token (e.g. after the Zoo Gateway callback rotated it) even though the view's buffer had caught up. The refresh now rebuilds the affected tasks' handlers in the pinned views, and the non-activating branch rebuilds this view's own handler when it holds the pin.
Proofs: ClineProvider.spec green (the pinned-sibling refresh test now asserts the active task's handler is rebuilt with the saved settings, not just the private buffer); negative control: dropping the rebuild from the refresh reddens exactly that assertion, restores byte-exact (hash match); parallelMode/sticky-mode/webviewMessageHandler green; eslint --max-warnings=0 clean; tsc clean except the two known local telemetry-dist noise lines; prettier merge-ref gate ALL-MATCHED.
Follow-up: test-quality round from the review (head 726e230)
The review round on the api-wiring unit named four test-quality issues; the ones present in this unit are fixed here: the viewStates describe block moved out of the alwaysDenyUnapprovedCommands block (test names carried the wrong subject), the prune test's toBeDefined() survival checks replaced with exact-shape toEqual assertions (they pass even if pruning strips fields), the stale-temporary-entry test's fixed 10 ms wait replaced with awaiting the load itself (the negative assertion could pass vacuously on a slow load), and the readiness-cancel test's fake timers restored in a finally block (a failed assertion left fake timers active and hung a later real-timer test).
Proofs: global-settings 9/9 where present, ClineProvider.spec green, sticky-mode green where present, api-task-control green where present; negative controls: pruning that strips updatedAt reddens exactly the prune test, a loadViewState that adopts the unowned temporary-id entry reddens exactly the stale-entry test, restores byte-exact (hash match); eslint --max-warnings=0 clean (src and types); prettier merge-ref gate ALL-MATCHED.
Follow-up: review-round fixes from the series (head f528dcc)
A review round on the mode-profile-writes and e2e-view-state units found fixes this unit carries. When the view's durable mode pin write rejected inside the mode-switch handler, the task-history write and the in-memory task mode had already landed and the caller delivered the submitted message with the new task mode against the view's unchanged mode and mode-linked API configuration - the failure now restores the pre-switch task mode and history entry before rethrowing (new sticky-mode test; negative control: dropping the rollback reddens exactly that test).
A review round on the mode-profile-writes unit found that the profile-deletion re-pin updated each sibling view's buffer but not its running task: the posted state prefers the task's own apiConfiguration, so a conversation in a view pinned to the deleted profile kept sending the deleted profile's settings. The re-pin now rebuilds the sibling's API handler with the replacement's settings and re-points the task's sticky profile name, mirroring the activation path.
Proofs: ClineProvider.spec and sticky-mode green; eslint --max-warnings=0 clean; tsc clean except the two known local telemetry-dist noise lines; prettier merge-ref gate ALL-MATCHED. The rebuild's negative control (dropping it reddens exactly the sibling re-pin test, byte-exact restore) runs in the units that own that test.
In addition: The view-state readiness bound no longer rejects headless callers whose webview never launched (it only rejects when the webview has launched and readiness failed), and the IPC start-task listener catches rejections since the IPC server does not await async listeners (new headless-fallback and launched-stuck tests; negative control: an unconditional timeout reddens exactly the fallback test). The readiness-cancel test now pins the bound's own timer via fake timers and a zero timer count instead of a global clearTimeout spy, and the mode-ordering test asserts the switch has not been called before the pending initialization is released (negative controls: dropping the timer clear / the initialization await reddens exactly the respective assertion).
Proofs: ClineProvider.spec 299/299, sticky-mode 34/34, parallel-mode 40/40, Task.spec 190/190, api-task-control 26/26; every negative control reddens exactly its target test and restores byte-exact (hash match); eslint --max-warnings=0 clean; tsc clean except the two known local telemetry-dist noise lines; prettier merge-ref gate ALL-MATCHED.
Updated this round (CodeRabbit follow-up, head 78c21d1)
Non-activating profile saves no longer force-rebuild the API handler of a view whose active task follows a different sticky profile: both rebuild sites (the acting view's pinned branch and the pinned-sibling refresh) are guarded by taskApiConfigName === saved profile. Pinned-view overlays still refresh; regression tests cover both sites (negative control: removing either guard reddens exactly its test).
Sticky-mode afterEach now disposes the per-test provider before resetting the instance registry, so providers leave McpServerManager's static provider set between tests.
Test hygiene (head bb3a988, same series-wide round): prune assertions compare full kept entries; the two re-key storage tests seed through the durable write path so their assertions can fail; the webview state-payload test renamed to describe what it asserts.
Updated this round (CodeRabbit follow-up 2, head 41bbc27)
Deleted-profile re-pin: the forced task-handler rebuild and the sticky-name rewrite now require taskApiConfigName === deleted profile (the view-buffer re-pin stays unconditional), so a pinned view whose task follows another sticky profile keeps its conversation's settings and persisted profile name. Regression test included (negative control: removing the guard reddens exactly that test); the existing sibling re-pin test's task double now names the deleted profile as its sticky profile, matching what the test asserts.
Per the AGENTS.md policy (never add Stryker directives; remove them when a file is touched), all // Stryker disable directives were dropped from this PR. Equivalence rationale for the removed suppressions:
Stryker disable next-line ConditionalExpression: defensive clobber guard, unreachable per the ordering argument above.
Stryker disable next-line StringLiteral: setPanel branches only on type === "sidebar", so any other literal routes to the identical tab-ref assignment
Stryker disable next-line StringLiteral: setPanel only distinguishes "sidebar"; any other value routes to the tab-ref assignment
Stryker disable next-line ConditionalExpression: at the catch, this call's own state-change handler only ever re-points the tracked ref at newPanel itself, so tabPanel === newPanel is the only reachable state here; a concurrent re-pointing race is not representable in this spec.
Stryker disable next-line ConditionalExpression: only tool_use and mcp_tool_use entries ever carry an id — the text block pushed in the text case has no id field and the start events reaching this guard always carry the string id locked in by processRawChunk — so the type check cannot change the outcome of entry.id === event.id for any entry this pipeline produces; the false replacement is additionally killed by the rejection tests.
Stryker disable next-line ConditionalExpression: event.name is always a string on this path — the only delta events reaching this handler are emitted by processRawChunk with the tracked start name (never undefined), so the legacy nameless branch below is unreachable defensive code and the conditional always takes the named side.
Stryker disable next-line ConditionalExpression: streamingKey can never be undefined here — makeStreamingKey always returns a string and the legacy lookup branch above is unreachable (see the directive on the event.name check) — so the null side is unreachable defensive code.
Stryker disable next-line ConditionalExpression, EqualityOperator: streamingKey is always a defined string on this path (makeStreamingKey never returns undefined; the legacy branch is unreachable per the directives above), and processStreamingChunk returns a partial ToolUse for a known key, so both defensive conditions reduce to the partialToolUse check and cannot change the observed behavior.
Stryker disable next-line LogicalOperator: event.name is always a string on this path — finalizeRawChunks emits end events with the tracked start name (a string, set before the tracker can start), so the ?? event.id fallback guards a nameless end event this pipeline cannot produce.
Stryker disable next-line ConditionalExpression, LogicalOperator, EqualityOperator: the both-miss case is unreachable via the raw-chunk pipeline — end events carry the locked start name so the compound key resolves the registered entry, and a same-ID rejected-start end is always processed after the accepted start's end has already removed that entry; this defensive path protects against a cross-name end event the pipeline cannot produce.
Stryker disable next-line ConditionalExpression: unreachable defensive region — getStreamingToolCallById can only resolve when the both-miss case above is reachable, which the raw-chunk pipeline cannot produce (see the directive there).
Stryker disable next-line CallExpression,ObjectLiteral: _updateViewLocalStateFromMutation applies only mode, currentApiConfigName, apiConfiguration and provider-settings keys, so a listApiConfigMeta-only payload (deleted call or empty object) is a behavior-preserving no-op.
Stryker disable next-line ConditionalExpression: in this fallback the view does not pin the deleted profile, so when the deleted profile was not the shared selection profileToActivate equals the shared selection itself; forcing the branch only rewrites that same value back into the store.
Stryker disable next-line ConditionalExpression,BlockStatement: hostile non-stabilizing encodings are unreachable from the webview (its posts are plain link targets); the bound is defensive
Stryker disable next-line CallExpression: hostile non-stabilizing encodings are pinned by the direct decodeUntrustedPathToStable bound test; the webview never posts such values
Stryker disable next-line ConditionalExpression,OptionalChaining: equivalent mutant - when localStorage is unavailable the guard-false path and the throwing body both return this.fallbackState from this catch
Stryker disable next-line ConditionalExpression,OptionalChaining: equivalent mutant - when localStorage is unavailable the guard-false path and the throwing body both mark the write failed and return newState
CR round 2026-10-15 (b)
Ported the payload-customModes fix for setValues mode validation (identical flagged block; regression test added) so the units stay byte-identical at merge.
CR round 2026-10-15 (c)
Ported: shared apiProvider fallback in getConfiguration and the dispose() finally-path deregistration (identical flagged blocks; regression tests added).
Ported: whole-operation deregistration finally in dispose() and createTask mode restore on custom-mode registration failure (identical flagged blocks; regression tests added).
CR round 2026-10-15 (f)
The createTask registration-failure rollback now restores the shared mode and the view's own mode pin independently (unset pin stays unset); divergent-pin regression test added. Same fix in all six units carrying the flagged block.
Activation rollback completeness: the pre-activation snapshot captures the exact durable viewStates map and the rollback restores it through the serialized queue, recovering sibling entries the activation's pruning evicted (CR Persistence Integrity).
setGlobalState persists parsed.data instead of the raw payload (CR Security Boundaries).
Activation writes from the stored record (read-back feeds every post-save consumer; CR Security Boundaries).
Clear/re-point cache divergence is guarded at the ContextProxy#updateGlobalState layer on this unit; the new tests pin that guard.
Verification: new tests are focused negative controls (reverting each guard reddens exactly the matching test); ClineProvider.spec, webviewMessageHandler.spec spot-checks, api specs, spec-inclusive tsc --noEmit, eslint --max-warnings=0 (suppression counts unchanged) and prettier all green on this head.
Merged the current upstream/main (merge commit; the row-9 fix commit is unchanged and is the first parent) to clear the review gate's mergeability hold. Upstream refactored upsertProviderProfile into a new persistProviderProfile method and added a runToCompletion queue option; this unit's transactional body was ported into the new method unchanged and upstream's Promise.allSettled activation fix was adopted in it. ClineProvider.spec, webviewMessageHandler.spec, tsc --noEmit, eslint (suppression counts unchanged) and prettier re-verified green at this head. The first refreshed head's windows unit-test lane caught that upstream's new updateProfileModel tests in ClineProvider.apiHandlerRebuild.spec.ts mock the settings manager with a static getProfile, which starves the post-save read-back; the mock now repoints getProfile at what saveConfig wrote (the real manager's behavior), and the file's 38 tests pass locally alongside the rest of the verification set.
Sidebar and editor-tab views now keep their mode and provider profile selections independently, including across reloads.
Added editor-tab actions for starting a task, opening settings, browsing the marketplace, and viewing history.
Starting a task in a new tab can preserve currently open editors.
Improvements
Mode changes are applied to the intended task, and the Modes view shows a loading indicator while its state is restored.
Sensitive credentials are excluded from settings exports and protected during storage.
This change adds durable view-local mode and profile selections, task-scoped mode switching, separate sidebar and tab command routing, and safeguards for settings and profile updates. It also adds webview hydration handling, test-only task controls, and end-to-end coverage.

Summary
View identity and state contract packages/types/src/global-settings.ts, packages/types/src/vscode-extension-host.ts, packages/types/src/api.ts, webview-ui/src/utils/vscode.ts
Adds the persisted viewStates schema, sensitive-provider key checks, optional launch viewStateId, test-only API types, and browser-side view ID persistence with an in-memory fallback.
Per-view provider and profile lifecycle src/core/webview/ClineProvider.ts, src/core/webview/__tests__/ClineProvider*.spec.ts, .cp-*.txt
ClineProvider loads, validates, persists, and merges view-local selections. Profile and mode operations synchronize affected views and include rollback handling. Tests cover persistence, pruning, isolation, and concurrent changes.
Settings and configuration writes src/core/config/ContextProxy.ts, src/core/config/ProviderSettingsManager.ts, src/core/config/importExport.ts, src/extension/api.ts, src/core/webview/webviewMessageHandler.ts
Excludes viewStates from portable settings and filters credential-bearing configuration fields. Adds cross-instance serialization for profile mutations and restores affected profile, settings, and mode state when writes fail.
Task-scoped modes and test API src/core/task/Task.ts, src/core/tools/SwitchModeTool.ts, src/extension/api.ts, packages/types/src/api.ts
Mode switching now targets the relevant task and waits for initialization and pending profile mutations. The test-only API adds task ask controls, follow-up answers, and schema-validated global-state access.
Sidebar and tab command routing src/activate/registerCommands.ts, src/package.json, packages/types/src/vscode.ts
Adds tab-specific title commands and routes actions to the corresponding provider. Tab creation reuses live panels, coordinates concurrent opens, selects replacements on disposal, and cleans up failed initialization.
Hydration and integration tests webview-ui/src/context/ExtensionStateContext.tsx, webview-ui/src/components/modes/ModesView.tsx, apps/vscode-e2e/src/suite/*, apps/vscode-e2e/src/fixtures/*
The launch message includes the view ID, and the modes UI displays a loading skeleton until state arrives. End-to-end tests cover mode isolation, ten-round follow-up switching, reload persistence, and secret-key checks.

Merge Risk: Moderate · up to d34a6
Two views changing profile or mode at the same time can hang for about 30 seconds and then fail. A new-tab task started before the tab has launched can also run on stale shared mode and profile state. The mutation-test gate currently fails and debug snapshot files are committed. Fix the cross-view lock wait and the CI gate before merging.
Security Architecture Review
Security architecture risk:🟡 Moderate · up to 98592
Overlapping configuration updates followed by a storage failure can restore older credentials or safety settings over a newer successful update. Several isolation and recovery controls reduce the risk, but the rollback sequence does not preserve newer changes. No unauthorized credential disclosure was established.
Retained concerns
Medium · security · inferred: Compensating rollback is not conditional on mutation ownership. After a shared configuration write succeeds but its durable view-pin write fails, setValues restores every captured prior value. If another update has meanwhile succeeded, this compensation can overwrite its credentials or safety settings. The pin-write queue and direct-write tokens do not make the combined transition atomic or prevent this stale compensation.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
inferred — The rollback issue reaches shared configuration, not only one view's durable entry. Its supported exposure is other views and tasks consuming the same extension configuration, including credential-backed API requests and shared approval-policy values. Cross-user, cross-tenant, or infrastructure-level exposure was not established.
Security Findings and Attack Paths
inferred — The supported failure path requires overlapping authorized configuration updates and a failed durable pin write. An older operation then restores its captured settings as a fresh write, potentially replacing a newer successful credential or policy update. This is an integrity and failure-containment concern; no unauthenticated trigger, credential disclosure, or demonstrated tool-execution bypass was established.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
observed — The extension normalizes supplied view identities and rejects the prototype key, but does not bind an accepted identity to its originating panel. This is not evidence of a new credential authorization bypass: both inspected base and head permit webviews to list and activate shared profiles directly. Whether hostile content can obtain another view's identity remains unresolved.
Resilience and Maintainability Implications
observed — Direct settings and secret writes use per-key tokens to prevent an older failed write from rolling back a newer cached value. Inspected provider tests cover isolated compensation failures; they do not establish ownership-safe compensation across overlapping configuration operations.
Hardening Proposals
proposed — Give the combined shared-write and pin-write transition mutation ownership, using version-checked compensation or appropriately scoped serialization. Recovery should restore only values still owned by the failing operation and preserve newer credential and safety-setting updates.

The test-only global-state API rejects production access, unknown keys, credential keys, taskHistory, and schema-invalid values, and persists parsed data only (src/extension/api.ts:510-519,1122-1181). View-state writes use a schema that strips unknown fields, while view IDs require string validation, length bounds, and live-view ownership checks (packages/types/src/global-settings.ts:120-124, src/core/webview/ClineProvider.ts:1033-1091). Profile writes read back schema-normalized records before using them in view or task state (src/core/webview/ClineProvider.ts:3496-3531).
Full details: Persistence Integrity
Explanation
A changed activation path can leave durable state inconsistent after a later write fails. In persistProviderProfile, the profile is saved first (src/core/webview/ClineProvider.ts:3490-3492). The activation group then runs setValue("currentApiConfigName", name) and setModeConfig with Promise.allSettled (:3554-3572). The changed setValue path also persists this view's currentApiConfigName pin (:5602, :5799-5801). If setModeConfig rejects after the pin write succeeds, the method throws without restoring the pin, profile record, list, or other completed activation writes; upsertProviderProfile only logs and returns undefined (:3341-3347). This can leave a new durable view pin paired with an old mode mapping and a partially applied profile activation.
Resolution
Make profile activation transactional or define and surface explicit partial-state behavior. Snapshot the manager record, profile list, shared selection/settings, mode mapping, and affected view-state entries before activation. After every activation write settles, compensate all writes that this operation completed, including the durable view pin, while preserving newer mutations. Add a failure-injection test where a later activation write rejects after setValue("currentApiConfigName", ...) succeeds, and assert that no stale pin or partial profile activation remains.
Full details: Regression Evidence
Explanation
The prior visual-regression concern remains unresolved. The PR adds a user-visible unloaded ModesView skeleton with spacing, animation, rounded blocks, and the bg-vscode-input-background theme token in webview-ui/src/components/modes/ModesView.tsx:617-625. The added Vitest test checks only DOM presence and absence of stale text. The authoritative diff contains no *.visual.tsx test, gallery story, or screenshot baseline for this state. webview-ui/AGENTS.md:46-57 requires a Playwright snapshot for user-visible layout and theme-token changes.
Resolution
Add a deterministic Playwright component visual test for the unloaded modes state. Register a stable modes-skeleton story in webview-ui/playwright/gallery/stories.tsx, generate the baseline with the repository's container-based visual workflow, and commit the resulting __screenshots__ PNG.
Full details: Lifecycle Resource Cleanup
Explanation
The prior lifecycle leak remains in the changed createClineTabPanel path. The try/catch ends after tabProvider.resolveWebviewView(newPanel) at src/activate/registerCommands.ts:531-551; the subsequent delay(100) and vscode.commands.executeCommand("workbench.action.lockEditorGroup") at lines 553-555 are outside that cleanup guard. If the lock command rejects after initialization succeeds, createClineTabPanel rejects through API.startNewTask({ newTab: true }), but newPanel remains in liveTabPanels and as tabPanel, while the provider remains in ClineProvider.activeInstances and its listeners remain registered. A retry can therefore create another tab while the failed provider and panel remain.
Resolution
Wrap resolveWebviewView, the delay, and the lock command in one cleanup guard. On any failure, remove the panel from liveTabPanels, clear tabPanel only when it still references that panel, dispose the provider, and dispose the panel or its registered listeners. Add a regression test that rejects workbench.action.lockEditorGroup after successful initialization and verifies provider disposal, an empty live-panel registry, and no tracked panel.

The stale globalSettings spread reverts the view-pin re-point performed at Line 2356.
globalSettings is captured at Line 2325, before any mutation. It is the full contextProxy.getValues() result, and viewStates is a globalSettingsSchema key, so it is included (ContextProxy.getAllGlobalState maps every GLOBAL_STATE_KEYS entry).
Sequence on this path:
Line 2356: repointPersistedViewStates writes a new viewStates map that points the affected pins at profileToActivate.
Line 2375: setValues({ ...globalSettings, ... }) writes back the viewStates snapshot taken at Line 2325. ContextProxy.setValues iterates every own key, so the pre-re-point map overwrites the corrected one.
The re-point is silently undone. The affected view then rehydrates a deleted profile name after a reload — the exact failure repointPersistedViewStates was added to prevent.
Trigger: this view pins an unrelated profile (so viewPinsDeletedProfile is false and the early return at Line 2368 is skipped) while another view pins the profile being deleted.
No test covers this. The re-point test in src/core/webview/__tests__/ClineProvider.parallelMode.spec.ts Lines 840-866 leaves viewLocalState empty, so it takes the activation branch and returns before Line 2375.
Write only the two keys this path owns instead of replaying a whole stale snapshot.

Add a regression case that seeds a viewStates pin on the deleted profile, sets viewLocalState.currentApiConfigName to an unrelated profile, and asserts the re-point survives.

…store writes
Port of Zoo-Code-Org#1557 (ce136d8) - the same two writers exist here, so the same patch
is carried rather than reinvented.
The profile rename holds the manager's cross-instance critical section across
its existence check, its save, and its compensation delete. Two writers still
took only their own instance's lock: the webview's saveApiConfiguration case
and persistProviderProfile. A same-name save issued from another view could
land between that rename's check and its save and then be deleted by the
rename's compensation. Both writers now join the same section, around the
store write only, so the shared lock is never held across activation or state
work, and the rename callback never calls either writer, so the wrap cannot
nest on itself.
…UUID
createViewStateId guarded on `"randomUUID" in crypto`, which is also true for an
inherited property. A crypto object that inherits a non-callable randomUUID passed the
guard and threw before any id was minted, so the view never got an identity at all.
Check callability instead, and cover both gaps the old check let through: an inherited
non-callable randomUUID, and a persisted vscodeState whose JSON is malformed - a read
must fall back to the in-memory state rather than throw, and once a write failed the
stale JSON must not become authoritative again.
The provider owns a DiagnosticsRequestBroker whose pending entries hold a resolver and a
timeout that close over the provider, and requestWebviewDiagnostics leaves an entry
behind until the webview answers. Nothing disposed the broker, so a view that went away
mid-request kept both alive until the timeout fired - and a teardown that threw on the
way to the last cleanup step would have left them dangling entirely.
Dispose the broker in dispose()'s finally, ahead of the steps that may throw, and pin it
with a test that fails MCP cleanup mid-dispose and asserts both the release and that the
waiting request resolves instead of hanging on its 60s timeout.
Carry the activation-ordering fix from Zoo-Code-Org#1557 (8320d78) onto this branch:
the sibling overlay snapshot now runs before activateProfile, so a pin whose
record cannot be read aborts the shared write instead of leaving the store on
the new profile while a mode switch that already passed onSharedWriteStart
keeps the new mode, which would leave mode and provider disagreeing. For an
activation by id the resolved name comes from the manager's own listing, which
the shared write reads as well.
Carried: the ClineProvider change, the apiHandlerRebuild serialization test's
setImmediate flush (the snapshot adds an await before activateProfile), and the
'aborts the shared settings write when a pinned sibling's profile cannot be
snapshotted' regression with its activateProfile spy. That test asserts on the
pin the abort names rather than the sentence, because the sibling branches
phrase this abort differently.
Not carried: the webviewMessageHandler half of 8320d78 and the four
viewStateReadiness tests. They exercise the repair-inside-readiness wiring that
this branch's public setViewStateId does not take; here the launch repair runs
unconditionally after registration, so the skipped-repair behaviour they prove
cannot occur. The re-pin overlay-clearing test is dropped for the same reason:
this branch does not clear a re-pinned sibling's overlay when the replacement's
settings cannot be read - reported to the stack owner rather than silently
changed here.
Verified: ClineProvider.spec 426 passed, apiHandlerRebuild 38 passed,
webviewMessageHandler 143 passed, registerCommands 46 passed, tsc clean,
prettier and eslint clean, src/eslint-suppressions.json unchanged.
createClineTab tracked the panel, then awaited resolveWebviewView with the
panel's listeners registered only afterwards. A rejected initialization left
the failed panel tracked with no dispose listener that could ever clear it,
left the provider bound to that panel and never disposed, and let the next
"Open in editor" click take the reuse path with a provider whose creation had
already failed - the *InTab commands then act on a panel the user had closed.
Register onDidChangeViewState and onDidDispose before the await, and handle the
rejection: only while the tracked panel is still this one, clear the tracked
panel, dispose the panel and its provider, and rethrow the initialization
error. A cleanup failure is logged together with the initialization error
instead of replacing it, and nothing throws out of a finally, so the error that
explains the failure stays the one that propagates.
Tests: "clears the tracked tab and closes the panel when webview resolution
rejects" (tracked panel cleared, panel and provider each disposed once, both
listeners registered before the await, rejection matched by identity) and
"keeps the initialization error when the failed tab's provider teardown
rejects" (expect(thrown).toBe(initError) with the teardown failure logged
beside it).
Controls, each restored byte-identically:
- dropping the catch's cleanup block -> expected { reveal: [Function Mock],
... (5) } to be undefined (the failed panel stays tracked) and the log
assertion fails
- replacing the teardown log with throw disposeError -> expected Error: provider
teardown failed to be Error: webview initialization failed
- moving the two listener registrations back after the await -> expected
"vi.fn()" to be called 1 times, but got 0 times
Verified on this head: registerCommands.spec 48 passed, ClineProvider.spec 426
passed, webviewMessageHandler.spec 143 passed, apiHandlerRebuild 38 passed,
tsc clean, prettier and eslint clean, src/eslint-suppressions.json unchanged.
… (vps2 F3)
Resolves the eight open CodeRabbit threads on Zoo-Code-Org#1560 without changing the write ordering those
threads defend:
- webviewMessageHandler: the Zoo Gateway sign-out sweep treats an undefined profile id as a
failed cleanup, because upsertProviderProfile resolves undefined when its write fails instead
of rejecting, so the handler cannot tell a cleared token from a swallowed save.
- registerCommands: openClineInNewTab re-enters the shared tab-panel join when the provider it
awaited turned out to be disposed, instead of opening a second panel beside the replacement.
- ClineProvider: the apiHandlerRebuild specs pin the mode across all three surfaces after a
post-activation shared-write failure, and add a case where provider and model are unchanged
so the handler rebuild is the only thing keeping the task on the new profile.
- ClineProvider: the delete compensation snapshots the sibling overlay before the doomed record
turns unreadable, and reads the selection through saveViewState so the snapshot branch is the
one under test.
- ClineProvider + ProviderSettingsManager: the delete compensation now also restores the
manager gate - its selected profile and every mode mapping - through getSelectionAndModeConfigs
and only while the manager still reports what this deletion wrote, so a concurrent owner is
not overwritten and a mapping this deletion did not move is not replayed.
- api-configuration: the restore-order spec records the write sequence instead of inferring it
from call counts.
The unit-level mutation delta is closed with tests rather than directives or suppressions: a
sign-out scenario in which the tokenless, non-active zoo-gateway profile is left out of the
sweep; the exact clear and failure log lines for an active and a persisted-only profile; a
delete whose activation target is named by the shared selection but absent from the durable
entry list; a concurrent activation that takes ownership of the manager gate between the
replacement activation and the failure; a compensation whose gate read fails outright, proving
the restores behind it are independent; and a delete that starts with the manager already
selecting the profile it goes on to activate.
Local verification: vitest 786 passed across the seven touched specs; tsc --noEmit clean;
prettier --check clean; eslint --max-warnings=0 clean per file with no suppression increase -
webviewMessageHandler.spec.ts drops from 35 to 29 no-explicit-any after the casts are replaced
with typed provider views, and src/eslint-suppressions.json was pruned to match. Fourteen
measured negative controls against this head: mutate, capture the real assertion failure,
restore byte-identically, re-run green - the sign-out skip guard and its body, the undefined-id
confirmation and its message, the three clear-log literals, the optional-chained gate snapshot,
all five manager-gate guard conjuncts, the gate-restore log wording, and the shared-pair restore
ordering.
…ofile-writes
Zoo-Code-Org#2223 landed the time/date format and message-timestamp settings on the same
surface this unit edits, so the branch now carries the merge of main plus this
unit's review fixes in one head. Hand-resolved files:
- src/core/webview/ClineProvider.ts: kept main's displaySettings import and its
three new fields in the state posted to the webview, read from this unit merged
overlay copy so a pinned view posts its own values, and kept this unit validated
setValues while routing its payload through withoutInvalidDisplaySettings so an
invalid display value is dropped and logged before anything is stored, as main
does.
- src/extension/api.ts: kept main SettingsWriteError doc block and its
invalid-display-value filtering, and kept this unit snapshot-then-write,
restore-in-the-same-catch, rethrow-the-original transaction beneath it.
- src/extension/__tests__/api-configuration.spec.ts: kept main new
display-settings tests unchanged in intent, extending their doubles with the
reads this unit performs before its first write and pointing two assertions at
the writes that actually follow the settings here (the mode fan-out and the
webview post) plus the rollback of the record the save already made.
Verified: tsc clean; eslint --max-warnings=0 clean package-wide with no new
suppressions; prettier --check clean; 932 tests across the affected suites green
(api-configuration, displaySettings, ContextProxy, ClineProvider,
webviewMessageHandler, parallelMode, apiHandlerRebuild, registerCommands,
ProviderSettingsManager).
…ps2/f4-cross-instance-reset
Zoo-Code-Org#1560 settled the profile-write plumbing this unit extends, so this head carries
that plumbing plus this unit's cross-instance behaviour, resolved file by file.
Hand-resolved files:
- src/core/webview/ClineProvider.ts: kept main's write machinery - the
previousManagerGate/getSelectionAndModeConfigs snapshot with its id-gated restore,
the hasConfig fail-closed classification of a rejected profile read, the
name-and-id deleteConfig, the launch invalid-pin repair ordering, main's
displaySettings fields read through this unit's merged overlay copy, and main's
settled dispose() cleanup tail with its loadViewState reload - and kept this
unit's cross-instance machinery beside it: the runExclusiveAcrossInstances join
around the store write, the sibling overlay snapshot with its commit-time pin
recheck and its fail-closed refusal to overwrite the shared store, the sibling
postState guards with their named logs, modeSlugResolves, preserveForeignTask,
and the boolean-returning loadViewState delivery seam annotated at both ends.
- src/core/webview/webviewMessageHandler.ts: kept main's launch repair (an
unresolvable view profile re-pins only this view through the durable writes when
the shared selection is still valid) and main's mode-slug validation surface, and
kept this unit's cross-instance section around the profile save and the rename
compensation that depends on it.
- src/core/webview/__tests__/webviewMessageHandler.spec.ts: kept main's launch
tests, which assert that re-pin contract, and retired this unit's two
activation-based variants that the repair replaced; the launch fixture carries
main's activateProviderProfile signature with this unit's activate options.
- src/core/webview/ClineProvider.spec.ts: union of both suites. This unit's rival
double gained the read-back getProfile the writer now performs so the
critical-section ordering test still exercises the save inside the section.
Five of this unit's tests were retired as superseded by main's counterparts: the
two that asserted dispose rejecting on a failing cleanup step (main's tail runs
every later step and reports the failure) and the one that expected an unset
view-profile provider to default to Anthropic rather than follow the shared
selection.
- src/core/webview/__tests__/ClineProvider.parallelMode.spec.ts: the two
registrations of the manager mock now form one double carrying main's gate
(getSelectionAndModeConfigs, hasConfig, gate-backed activation) and this unit's
cross-instance section, exporting the manager's typed not-found class with a
declared fallback because the original-module import can hand back a partially
initialized module for this chain. Main's re-point and replacement-activation
bodies won their titles; this unit's sibling-overlay guard tests stayed; main's
log-and-continue variant was retired as the guard replaces its outcome and the
abort test keeps that coverage; and a deleted profile lookup now rejects with the
manager's own ProviderSettingsNotFoundError, as ProviderSettingsManager.getProfile
does, so a stale pin is not mistaken for a store outage.
- src/activate/registerCommands.ts and its spec: took main's reviewed superset
(the postActions helper, the tab-priority focus panel post, the
all-instances-aware diagnostics handler); this unit's only own content there was
the pre-refactor inline post forms main's helper supersedes, and this unit's
all-instances diagnostics test was ported onto main's handler shape with its
module mock.
- src/extension/api.ts, its configuration spec, and the webview-ui api spec: main's
versions wholesale; the set-configuration spec keeps this unit's five lines beside
main'sseventeen additions.
- src/eslint-suppressions.json: the provider spec's any-suppressions pruned 191 to
188 after the retirements, proved with --prune-suppressions; no count increased.
- .gitignore: main's scratch-file ignore entries.
Verified: tsc clean; eslint --max-warnings=0 clean on every merged path with no new
suppressions; prettier --check clean; 1008 tests across the affected suites green
(api-configuration, api-set-configuration, registerCommands, ContextProxy,
ProviderSettingsManager, ClineProvider, parallelMode, apiHandlerRebuild,
webviewMessageHandler, sticky-mode, sticky-profile, Task.sticky-profile-race).
…ites and retake the deleted cases
Resolves the five open CodeRabbit threads on Zoo-Code-Org#1560 at 8cc8f33. Four are teardown in the specs
this unit added; one is a behaviour change confined to the public API round trip.
- extension/api.ts: setConfiguration drops viewStates from the settings payload before the forward
write, and from the snapshot the rollback replays. The map is a snapshot of every view's
selection: writing a caller's copy forward pins views this call does not own, and replaying
the getter's copy on failure rolls them back to where this call found them. Both consult
isNonPortableSettingsKey, the list the export schema above and the import path already use,
which Zoo-Code-Org#2226 adds at its head (e9d0a2a) for the read side of the same round trip - that PR
filters what an external caller may read, this one filters what it may write. getConfiguration
and ContextProxy.getValues keep the key: the host's own consumers still need viewStates.
- core/config/ContextProxy.ts: declares NON_PORTABLE_SETTINGS_KEYS and exports
isNonPortableSettingsKey beside the export schema, so the two PRs share one rule instead of
each keeping its own copy of the key list.
- ClineProvider.spec: the mode-switch timeout test brackets its flow in try/finally so a failed
assertion cannot leave the gate unresolved, the prototype spy installed, or the timers faked
for the rest of the file.
- webviewMessageHandler.spec: the sign-out suite restores the three fixture members its tests
reassign. Measured control: with the assignments unrestored the file is still 176/176, so the
leak is latent rather than failing - vi.clearAllMocks undoes call history, never a property
assignment, and mockClineProvider.contextProxy alone is read 28 times by the eight describes
that follow.
- ClineProvider.sticky-mode.spec: the three temporary-id providers are disposed in finally, and
the third restores mockContext.globalState.update there before disposing, so a failing
assertion cannot leave the rejecting mock installed for the teardown below it.
- webview-ui ExtensionStateContext.spec.tsx: restored the 13 cache-interning and task-identity
cases main carries (from upstream c4ed96c, Zoo-Code-Org#2217) with the expectMessages, InternSpy and
cacheFor scaffolding they need and main's afterEach(vi.restoreAllMocks). They came back with
the merge of main; our scaffolding cleanup (fda1600) removed them without moving them
anywhere, and webview-ui/src/utils/__tests__/stringCache.spec.ts covers the class, not this
provider wiring.
Verified: src tsc --noEmit exit 0; webview-ui tsc --noEmit exit 0; eslint --max-warnings=0 clean
on every touched file with src/eslint-suppressions.json byte-for-byte unchanged; prettier clean.

…ps2/f4-cross-instance-reset
Zoo-Code-Org#1560 settled its review round in one commit: four test-teardown fixes and one behaviour change
confined to the public API round trip. This head takes that settled half and keeps this unit
cross-instance reset machinery intact.
Git auto-merged the four overlapping files and the content was checked hunk by hunk:
- src/extension/api.ts, src/core/config/ContextProxy.ts and
src/extension/__tests__/api-configuration.spec.ts came over from Zoo-Code-Org#1560 unchanged, so the
write-side viewStates filter (isNonPortableSettingsKey over NON_PORTABLE_SETTINGS_KEYS, the same
predicate Zoo-Code-Org#2226 applies to getConfiguration at its head e9d0a2a) now applies on this branch too:
Zoo-Code-Org#2226 filters what an external caller may read, this chain filters what it may write.
- ClineProvider.spec kept this unit cross-instance doubles and cases (the runExclusiveAcrossInstances
inline manager section, the in-flight-disposal lookup case) around Zoo-Code-Org#1560 timeout-test teardown fix.
- webviewMessageHandler.spec kept this unit deleteCustomMode routing, activateProviderProfile option
typing and isViewLaunched leak guard, around Zoo-Code-Org#1560 sign-out member restore.
- ExtensionStateContext.spec kept this unit two stale-push task-id cases below the 13 cache-interning
and task-identity cases Zoo-Code-Org#1560 restored from main.
- api.ts doc block: main sentence "Invalid values of the display settings are dropped and logged
first" is kept in the paragraph main wrote it in; Zoo-Code-Org#1560 restatement of it in our own paragraph,
which this branch already dropped at 17890eb, stays dropped, so the round trip is documented
once rather than twice.
Verified on the merged tree before committing: src tsc --noEmit exit 0; webview-ui tsc --noEmit

unit two stale-push cases.
…uration, narrow the rollback
Four findings from the review pool on this head, one reply-only (D, the restored
ExtensionStateContext cases). A, B and C are in the extension API transaction; E is the
webview-side view-state guard; A is a test that promised a behaviour it never performed.
setConfiguration (src/extension/api.ts):
- The existence check, the prior-record read and the save now run inside the manager
cross-instance critical section that the profile rename, the persist path and the
handler deletions already join. Unserialised, the sequence was: we read the name as
absent, another view created it through a locked writer, our own settings or mode write
failed, and our rollback deleted that view record together with its secrets.
- The compensation runs in its own section and re-reads the record first: only the record
whose id this call save returned is this call own to delete.
- The rollback replays only the keys the failed call itself wrote, taken from the snapshot
it captured. A rollback may restore what this call changed and nothing else, because
anything else the snapshot holds belongs to a writer that has moved on since it was
taken. That subsumes the viewStates filter and closes the taskHistory half.
- Re-entrancy audit: nothing inside either section joins the cross-instance queue again.
hasConfig, getProfile, saveConfig and deleteConfig take only the per-instance lock, which
is the inner one, and the settings write goes through ClineProvider.setValues, which
does not join it either. A section that called the sidebar provider persist path or the
rename handler would deadlock, because that queue is a promise chain and is not
re-entrant.
Tests:
- api-configuration: a second view parks inside a real queue double and creates the same
profile name while our call waits behind it; our mode write fails and the rollback
restores that record and its secret instead of deleting it (deleteConfig is never
reached, the id and the apiKey survive).
- api-configuration: the payload writes two keys while another view changes a third shared
key and the pass-through taskHistory key mid-call; the replay carries exactly the two
keys this call wrote and leaves the other view values where that view put them.
- api-configuration: the manager doubles now share a profile-store double in which
hasConfig, getProfile, saveConfig and deleteConfig agree on one map, so the compensation
re-read sees the record this call saved rather than the pre-call answer.
- ClineProvider: the flat-provider-write test now performs the write and asserts the
overlay drop plus the unmasked merged read, instead of naming them in a title.
- webview-ui: the view-state id guard applies the host 64-character bound inclusively, the
test covers 65 (refused) and 64 (reused), and the comment states what the host actually
rejects - an empty id and the proto key - rather than claiming more than it does.
Negative controls, each run against this head with the fix removed:
- record legs unwrapped: both new api-configuration tests fail and the other 18 pass
(ordering assertion trips, and the replay carries four keys instead of two).
- overlay drop removed: the repaired ClineProvider test fails with the stale per-view copy
still served by getValues().
- length bound removed: the 65-character test fails and reuses the too-long id.
Verified: src tsc 0, webview-ui tsc 0, eslint --max-warnings=0 clean on every touched
file with src/eslint-suppressions.json unchanged at 33814 bytes, prettier --check clean,

Merges the settled Zoo-Code-Org#1562 head (loadViewState delivery seam, ContextProxy
write paths, provider-settings delete contract, api configuration rollback)
into this branch so the stack sits on main tip e943530.
19 conflicted paths were resolved by taking the settled side as the base and
re-applying this branch's behaviour on top:
- ClineProvider.ts: settled teardown, diagnostics and view-state seams plus
this branch's viewStateReadiness/isDisposed release, dropping
getPersistedViewStates entries, loadViewState clear generation, the
viewLocalStateMutatedFields marker (which also covers a mutation that left
a field at the value it already held), per-view mode validation in setValue,
and the per-layer ownership guards on the createTask custom-mode rollback.
- registerCommands.ts: rebuilt on this branch's tab-panel unit (live panel
registry, focusInput drop, re-point) with the settled re-entrant creation
join loop and the settled provider-dispose cleanup on failed init.
- api.ts: the profile record now takes the same filtered payload as the shared
write, so a caller-supplied viewStates snapshot cannot be stored in a profile
record and re-pin other views when the record is re-applied.
- Specs: settled files plus the tests this branch owns, ported by title.
providerSettingsManager doubles gained the settled delete reads (getProfile,
hasConfig, getSelectionAndModeConfigs, saveConfig); the MCP dispose test waits
for the constructor's hub assignment before installing its double.
- ContextProxy.ts: settled read-back write paths kept; this branch's
durable-record rollback is superseded by them, so the five tests that pinned
the durable-record target were dropped (the read-back tests cover the same
cache/storage invariant, 81/81).
- ClineProvider.parallelMode: the branch test that pinned "no activation for an
unrelated deletion" was dropped - the settled delete activates for a view
with no pin, and the settled suite pins that behaviour with the same setup.
Verified on the merge result: tsc src and webview-ui clean, eslint
--max-warnings=0 clean on every touched path, prettier clean, suppression
counts never above main (3283 vs 3301), ClineProvider.spec 475/475,
parallelMode 55/55, registerCommands 73/73, api-configuration 29/29,
api-set-configuration 1/1, ContextProxy 81/81, webviewMessageHandler 180/180.
… section
The unit promises that a failed setConfiguration restores the prior mapping of every mode the
payload touched. The read that captures that mapping sat in the compensation region, below the
manager's cross-instance critical section, so a rejection there aborted the call after the
profile record had already been created or overwritten - the one state the compensation cannot
rebuild, because a record this call created has no prior record to restore.
Lift the capture above the section rather than into it: it joins the fail-closed reads that
precede the save, and it stays outside the cross-instance hold, so it lengthens no lock and the
mode writes it guards still happen after the section, as before.
A payload carrying modeApiConfigs whose getModeConfigId rejects now aborts with saveConfig never
called and the store still holding its prior record and settings (api-configuration.spec 20/20);
at the un-lifted order the same case fails on saveConfig having been called once (19/20).
api-set-configuration 1/1, ClineProvider 457/457 and webviewMessageHandler 180/180 unchanged.
…e-viewstate
Re-merge the moved Zoo-Code-Org#1562 head onto this merge-result head: the prior-mode-map capture now sits
above the manager's cross-instance section, while the record-payload filter (forwardValues)
stays on this side - two separate repairs landing in two heads, so the record write both carries
only the forwarded payload and happens after every fail-closed read has succeeded.
The merge auto-resolved with no conflicts: the two edits touch disjoint regions of
src/extension/api.ts. api-configuration.spec 30/30 (the lifted-order case and the record-payload
cases both present), api-set-configuration 1/1, tsc and eslint clean.
…tions from ContextProxy
The merge that brought in the read-back rollback left six fields behind that nothing reads:
stateWriteTokens, secretWriteTokens, durableState, durableSecrets, stateGeneration and
secretGeneration. A content search over src, packages, webview-ui and apps finds 15 mentions of
them, all inside core/config/ContextProxy.ts itself - 6 declarations, 4 seeds, 3 generation
bumps and 2 clears - and zero reads: no get, no has, no comparison, no return, and no test that
reaches them. The rollback they were written to serve reads the durable value back from storage.
Removed with their seeds, generation bumps, clears and the design comments that described them;
src/core/config/ContextProxy.ts goes from 854 lines to 799. Behaviour is unchanged - ContextProxy
81/81, ClineProvider 475/475, api-configuration 30/30 and webviewMessageHandler 180/180 pass
exactly as before the removal, and tsc, eslint and prettier are clean.
…e-loaded
Merge 55af762 (Zoo-Code-Org#1565 settled head) into vps2/f7-viewstate-loaded.
Resolution: the settled side is the base semantics for every conflicted path, because the recursive
base of this merge is polluted (stage-1 blobs carry leftover conflict markers), so diff3 region
boundaries cut through constructs and no per-region choice could preserve both shapes.
The polluted base did not merely lose braces: it left whole files and whole function shapes on our
side where the settled side had moved on, and four paths that exist in the settled tree were absent
from the merged index outright - ClineProviderFactory.ts, its spec, test-utils/provider.ts and its
spec. A merge that quietly deletes main's shared test factory and the provider factory feature has
no conflict to report, because a path that does not appear on one side is not a conflict.
Tally:
- main-only paths missing from the merged tree: 0
- main production symbols absent: 0 (every settled src/ path is present and byte-identical to 55af762)
- paths adopted wholesale from the settled side: 31 (11 conflicted + 4 index-missing + src/extension/api.ts
+ 13 named by tsc + 2 specs whose surviving ours-side cases needed the settled prod)
- paths where our unit's content survived auto-merge and differs from settled: 14
- activation snapshot/restore machinery, profile-create claims, prunedViewIdsDuringActivation and
clearedViewStateIds are not in the merged tree; the single compensation mechanism retained is the
fail-closed read, the id-guarded create claim and the allSettled conditional overlay restore.
Verification on this head: tsc src 0 errors, tsc webview-ui 0 errors, eslint --max-warnings=0 clean on
every touched path, prettier --check clean. Vitest --no-file-parallelism: api-configuration 30/30,

webview vscode 20/20, App 25/25, ModesView 12/12.
Dropped-case audit (title list, dispositions in the sweep log): 375 distinct it/test titles from
ee4b4df's ClineProvider.spec.ts and ClineProvider.sticky-mode.spec.ts - 361 carried by an identical
settled title, 10 reworded onto a named settled assertion, 4 genuinely dropped (create-claim
concurrency between two creates of the same name, sibling-create record retention, unrelated global
keys during activation rollback, sibling viewStates writes landing during rollback); the mechanism
that now covers them is the settled id-guarded create claim and fail-closed read.
…e hydrate
disposeInternal duplicated the teardown releases that dispose()s finally already
owns. Measured on 057e866, a single dispose() ran the diagnostics broker
release, removeAllListeners and McpServerManager.unregisterProvider twice
({"broker":2,"listeners":2,"unregister":2}), and because dispose() returns early
when _disposed is set, a second dispose() changed nothing - so the existing
idempotency test could not see the doubling. The releases now live only in the
finally, which is what the teardown bodys own comment already claimed.
The unawaited `void this.loadViewState()` in the teardown body came from the
merge resolution at 17890eb: neither parent carried it - one occurrence at
:563 on f4, one at :523 on f3, zero on origin/main. Starting a state load
against a provider that is already closing mutates view-local state
mid-teardown with no live view left to deliver to, so it is gone, and the seam
comment beside cleanupStep no longer claims a dispose-time load re-runs the
constructors hydrate.
Tests: the broker release, the listener removal and the MCP unregistration are
asserted to happen exactly once across a double dispose, and dispose is
asserted not to start a view-state load. Control with only the production
change reverted: the count test fails on 2/2/2 and the load test fails on one
call. With the fix ClineProvider.spec.ts is 459 passed, tsc and eslint clean.

…ough a rollback
Three review rows on the same path:
- registerCommands.ts: a Zoo Code tab open behind another editor in its group is neither
active nor visible, so the dispose handler cleared the tracked ref while a live tab still
existed, contradicting the comment right above it. openClineInNewTab then skipped its reuse
path and focusInput targeted the sidebar. The fallback now takes any live tab; only an
empty set clears the ref.
- extension/api.ts: previousProfileName came from the replay map, which holds only the keys
this call wrote. A payload that never carried currentApiConfigName therefore defaulted the
name to "default", refreshing the overlays pinned to "default" with this profile settings
and skipping the credential replay for the profile that was actually active. It now reads
the snapshot, which is the same value whenever the payload did write the pin.
- api-configuration.spec.ts: the compensation-time id mismatch had no test on its reject
path. A case now creates the name, lets another locked writer replace the record under its
own id between the sections, and fails the mode write: deleteConfig is not called and the
record keeps the other view id and secret. With the guard removed the case fails with
"expected the mock to not be called at all, but actually been called 1 times", so it is
the case the guard needed.
Measured before the changes: the hidden-tab case failed with "expected undefined to be
{ marker: 'panel-A' }" and the omitted-pin case failed with savedProfileName "default"
instead of "my-profile".
registerCommands.spec.ts 63 passed, api-configuration.spec.ts 22 passed, tsc 0 errors,
eslint 0 problems, prettier clean, no suppression changes.
…) into vps2/f6-e2e-viewstate
Discarded the previous merge of ce3b00a and rebuilt this merge fresh on the finished Zoo-Code-Org#1562 head,
which carries the three review fixes (rollback profile name from the snapshot, the live-tab fallback, and
the two reject-path / hidden-tab regression cases).
Already-ported Zoo-Code-Org#1562 content is not duplicated: the delta from ce3b00a to ba2e9db is applied
onto the previously resolved result, so the view-state and tab-panel code keeps this branch
resolutions.
Removed with their seeds, generation bumps, clears and the design comments that described them;
src/core/config/ContextProxy.ts goes from 854 lines to 799. Behaviour is unchanged - ContextProxy
81/81, ClineProvider 475/475, api-configuration 30/30 and webviewMessageHandler 180/180 pass
exactly as before the removal, and tsc, eslint and prettier are clean.
Three cases in registerCommands.spec.ts duplicated behaviour the file already
pinned, and the per-view provider lookup carried an implementation over from the
previous test because vi.clearAllMocks clears calls but not implementations:
- "clears a closed tab reference only if it is still current" existed twice: once in
describe("openClineInNewTab") and once, byte-identical, inside its nested
describe("openClineInNewTab initialization failure").
- "creates a webview panel with title 'Zoo Code'" appeared a second time inside the
initialization-failure block, where its subject is the success path. The outer
describe already pins the panel options and title, and "constructs the tab provider
with the editor context and the live MdmService instance" already pins the
constructor arguments against the MdmService sentinel.
- "preserves the initialization error when provider cleanup also fails" re-ran
"keeps the original resolve error when provider dispose also fails" with weaker
assertions: it never asserted the provider-dispose-failed log line. Measured:
mutating that log line reddens the surviving case and the serialization case and
leaves the duplicate green, so the duplicate cannot see the behaviour it copies.
- With those gone, the nested describe is named for what it still tests.
The shared beforeEach now resets ClineProvider.getInstanceForView, and a determinism
guard case asserts that the lookup enters every test with no installed
implementation. Control with the reset removed: 2 failed / 68 passed - the guard and
the focusInput drop case, whose ad-hoc workaround the shared reset replaces. Control
with the disposal identity guard removed: 1 failed / 69 passed, failing only the
surviving closed-tab-reference case - the behaviour the deleted twin duplicated.
ClineProvider.spec.ts: the viewId uniqueness case asserted toBeDefined() twice, which
is true of any non-undefined string. It now asserts the render-context prefix
(/^sidebar-\d+$/ and /^editor-\d+$/), so dropping the prefix or swapping the
contexts is visible. Control: the wrong prefix reddens exactly that case (1 failed /
474 passed).
registerCommands.ts: the finally comment carried two contradictory descriptions of the
same guard in one paragraph, including a fragment an earlier merge left behind
("...every other caller receives that clobber a replacement already stored in the
slot"). Text only - the guard is unchanged, and the wording now matches the version on
vps2/f3-mode-profile-writes, where the paragraph was rewritten.
Counts: registerCommands.spec 73 passed before and 70 after (four duplicated cases
removed, one guard added); ClineProvider.spec 475 before and after. tsc clean, eslint
clean with src/eslint-suppressions.json unchanged, prettier clean. Full suite 45 failed
| 12902 passed | 37 skipped - 40 in __tests__/dist_assets.spec.ts (no built dist) and 5
in services/rules/__tests__/rules.spec.ts (Windows symlinks), the environmental classes
this branch already had; src/core/task/Task.spec.ts is a known inter-run flake and did
not fail in this run.

updateCustomMode and deleteCustomMode wrote customModes and mode straight
through the ContextProxy. Once the mode gained a per-view pin, a direct
shared write moves the shared store and leaves a view whose pin names the
affected slug serving the earlier value: the pin only follows mutations that
go through provider.setValue, which is the path the updateSettings case in
this handler already uses for the same key pair, including the compensation
that scoped rollback to the shared layer.
Route both sites through provider.setValue and keep the webview fan-out after
the writes so the invocation order the existing spec pins still holds.
Test-first: with the three cases added and no production change the run was
3 failed | 475 passed and the three failures were exactly the new cases.
Routing the writes makes 478 pass; reverting only the routing reddens exactly
those three and leaves 475 green, so the cases fail for the routing and not
for anything else. The two outcomes are asserted apart - a view pinned to the
deleted mode, and a view with no pin of its own - rather than averaged.
Gates: ClineProvider.spec 478 passed, the whole core/webview folder 35 files
/ 1172 tests passed, tsc and eslint clean, prettier clean. Full src suite
45 failed | 12905 passed | 37 skipped - all 45 in dist_assets.spec.ts (40, no
built dist) and services/rules/__tests__/rules.spec.ts (5, Windows symlinks),
the same environmental classes as the base head, with 3 more tests passing.
Task.spec.ts remains a known inter-run flake in this series.
Review thread 8-HG of Zoo-Code-Org#1565.
deleteProviderProfile keys its activation branch on viewPinsDeletedProfile,
whose first leg is "no pin of its own". A view with no pin does not resolve to
the deleted profile: it follows the shared selection. Measured both deletions
on this head with the view unpinned -
- shared selection on a survivor, delete an unrelated profile: activation ran
for the survivor, the view ended pinned to it, shared selection and served
provider unchanged.
- shared selection on the deleted profile, delete it: activation ran for the
replacement, same observable outcome.
- with the condition narrowed to the name the view actually resolves to, the
first run stops activating (pin unset, no activation call, same served
provider) and the second is unchanged, and three cases in
ClineProvider.parallelMode.spec.ts go red: the leg is specified behaviour,
including the manager-gate hand-off that only the activation path performs.
So the leg is narrower than it reads rather than wrong. Rename the local to
viewFollowsDeletedProfile, record the measurement beside it, and add the
paired coverage the row was missing: the unrelated deletion and the
shared-selection deletion for an unpinned view, asserted apart. No behaviour
change - ClineProvider.spec 480 passed, ClineProvider.parallelMode.spec 55
passed, tsc, eslint and prettier clean.
Review thread 8-G- of Zoo-Code-Org#1565.
The routed default-mode reset fired for every view. provider.setValue writes the
shared store and this view's durable pin together, so deleting mode A moved a view
pinned to mode B onto the default as well. Measured on 9347e16: a view pinned to
keep-mode served keep-mode before the deletion and code after it, and code was
persisted into viewStates for that view.
The reset now keys off the mode this view actually resolves to - its pin, or the
shared selection when it has no pin of its own - and only that write goes through
the provider. When the shared selection is the deleted slug but this view pins
another mode, only the shared layer moves, so the views that follow the shared
selection stop resolving to a slug that no longer exists while this view keeps its
own. pinnedModeName exposes the view-local slug the way pinnedProfileName already
exposes the profile name.
Tests: "keeps a view pinned to another mode on that mode when a different mode is
deleted" and "resets the shared selection without moving a view pinned to another
mode"; the unpinned case now seeds the shared selection with the deleted slug,
which is the selection this reset exists for. Control with only the production
change reverted: both new tests fail with "expected code to be keep-mode". With
the fix: ClineProvider.spec.ts 484 passed, webviewMessageHandler 180, sticky-mode
46, parallelMode 55, the core/webview folder 35 files / 1178 passed, tsc 0 and
eslint 0 on the touched files.
…o vps2/f7-viewstate-loaded
The previous merge of 9a600f5 was discarded and this one rebuilt on the refreshed Zoo-Code-Org#1565 head,
which now sits on the finished Zoo-Code-Org#1562 head ba2e9db (rollback profile name from the snapshot,
the live-tab fallback, and the two regression cases). Zoo-Code-Org#1562 content already ported here is not
duplicated: the delta from 9a600f5 to cef38f5 is applied onto the previously resolved result,
so this branch resolutions for the view-state machinery are kept.

Failed pre-merge checks:
- Regression Evidence:
Add a deterministic Playwright component visual test for the unloaded modes
state. Register a stable modes-skeleton story in
`webview-ui/playwright/gallery/stories.tsx`, generate the baseline with the
repository's container-based visual workflow, and commit the resulting
`__screenshots__` PNG.
- Persistence Integrity:
Make profile activation transactional or define and surface explicit
partial-state behavior. Snapshot the manager record, profile list, shared
selection/settings, mode mapping, and affected view-state entries before
activation. After every activation write settles, compensate all writes that
this operation completed, including the durable view pin, while preserving newer
mutations. Add a failure-injection test where a later activation write rejects
after `setValue("currentApiConfigName", ...)` succeeds, and assert that no stale
pin or partial profile activation remains.
- Lifecycle Resource Cleanup:
Wrap `resolveWebviewView`, the delay, and the lock command in one cleanup guard.
On any failure, remove the panel from `liveTabPanels`, clear `tabPanel` only
when it still references that panel, dispose the provider, and dispose the panel
or its registered listeners. Add a regression test that rejects
`workbench.action.lockEditorGroup` after successful initialization and verifies
provider disposal, an empty live-panel registry, and no tracked panel.

## ESLint Suppressions
When writing new code:
- Avoid `as any`; use typed APIs directly (e.g. `RooCodeEventName.X` constants with typed `on()`/`listenerCount()`), or bracket notation (`obj["privateField"]`) to access private members. Prefer precise test doubles or `unknown` with a type guard over double assertions (`as unknown as T`); use double assertions only as a last resort, with a comment explaining why.

## ESLint Suppressions
### Typed test files
New or substantially changed test files must not add `typescript-eslint/no-explicit-any` suppression entries to `src/eslint-suppressions.json`:
- Prefer typed structural doubles: type mock context/proxy classes against the real public types they stand in for (e.g. `vscode.ExtensionContext`), and use `unknown` for storage values and mock callback parameters instead of `any`.
- Access private members with bracket notation (`provider["view"]`) and call public members without casts so their generic signatures keep checking arguments.
- When a partial double cannot be assigned to the real type, cast it once at the construction site (`as unknown as T`) with a comment naming the members the double provides; do not repeat `as any` at every use site.
- Validate with `pnpm --dir src run check-types`, the narrowest affected Vitest suite, and `pnpm --dir src exec eslint --prune-suppressions --max-warnings=0 <relative-test-...

## Shared Test Utilities
- Keep provider-specific payloads, failure streams, and assertions inline when they explain the behavior under test.
1569-1570: Bind the replacement provider lookup to createdPanels[1].
Line 1570 uses mockReturnValue(replacementProvider), so the lookup returns that provider for any panel. The test says that tab commands reach the provider for the replacement panel. That claim is not tested. If getTabProvider looked up createdPanels[0], the sidebar, or any other view, historyButtonClickedInTab would still post to replacementProvider, and the test would still pass.
The previous thread confirmed this fix on PR #1562 (c9b08aaf0). The fix is not in this head yet.

The rename repoint path does not re-enter runExclusiveAcrossInstances.
repointViewLocalStateAfterProfileRename updates persisted view pins, view-local state, task state, task history, and the webview. It does not call persistProviderProfile, upsertProviderProfile, or another lock-taking profile writer. The reported deadlock is not present.
This test covers the same scenario as the fake-timer test at Lines 253-271. In both tests, viewLaunched is true, readiness never settles, and startNewTask rejects with the timeout error.
This test uses real timers, so it waits the full 3000 ms bound. That is a large part of the default 5 s Vitest timeout, and it can time out on a slow CI runner.
A previous review thread reported this test as removed. It is still present at this head. Delete it, or move the createTask not-called assertion into the fake-timer test.

A cross-instance queue wait can create a lock cycle between two views. Concurrent activations then stall for 30 s and fail.
snapshotSiblingOverlaysBeforeSharedSettingsWrite runs inside the caller's providerProfileMutationQueue, for example from activateProviderProfileUnlocked or handleModeSwitch. It then awaits instance["enqueueProviderProfileMutation"] on the sibling's queue.
This is the trigger:
View A and view B each pin a profile without an overlay. Each activation reaches this state, because setValue("currentApiConfigName") pins and the activation clears apiConfiguration.
A activates or mode-switches to a profile that B does not pin. At the same time, B does the same toward a profile that A does not pin. Examples are two parallel tasks that each run switch_mode with mode-linked profiles.
A's queue is held by A's activation. That activation waits on B's queue. B's queue is held by B's activation, which waits on A's queue.
The result: neither callback can run. The inner enqueue has no runToCompletion, so each callerResult rejects after PENDING_OPERATION_TIMEOUT_MS (30 s). The catch records the error as a non-ProviderSettingsNotFoundError failure, so both activations throw Refusing to overwrite the shared provider settings…. Both user actions hang for 30 s and then fail. After that, the queued snapshot callbacks still run and apply the overlays late.
The sibling queue does not protect anything here. An apiConfiguration-only mutation is never persisted (_persistViewLocalStateFromMutation writes only mode/currentApiConfigName), so the update is synchronous. Do the pin re-check and the overlay write together after the getProfile await, with no await in between. That makes them atomic on the event loop, and no other provider's queue has to be acquired.

In snapshotSiblingOverlaysBeforeSharedSettingsWrite, remove the awaited
enqueueProviderProfileMutation on the sibling and, immediately after getProfile
resolves, re-check pinnedProfileName and apiConfiguration before applying the
overlay through the existing synchronous local-state mutation path, with no

Remove the duplicated mode check and correct the comment.
The comment says provider.setValue has no mode validation. That statement is false. ClineProvider.setValue (src/core/webview/ClineProvider.ts:5575-5587) rejects non-string and unknown slugs with getModeBySlug against customModesManager.getCustomModes(), logs Ignoring invalid mode, and returns before any write. This branch repeats the same predicate and reads the custom modes a second time. If one copy of the check changes later, the two copies can drift apart. The incorrect comment also tells future editors that the provider path is unsafe.
Either delete this branch and rely on provider.setValue, or keep it and change the comment so it states the real reason, for example skipping the call early.

Rethrow the readiness timeout for newTab starts.
createClineTabPanel creates a webview panel for a newTab start. If that panel's readiness wait expires before webviewDidLaunch, provider.viewLaunched is still false. The current guard then treats the expiry as headless and creates the task on shared defaults. This is the stale-state path that the comment at api.ts:285-289 says must be avoided. A late webviewDidLaunch then loads different per-view values.
Rethrow for newTab. The failed tab panel should also be disposed. Otherwise it stays open with no task attached.

Draft PR — vps2 unit F7 (modes skeleton until view state loads).
Tracking: fork issue 41 (vps2 series ledger). Upstream issue: #1566 (this series' gap record; the original upstream bug is #915). Port source: upstream PR #928 (fix(webview): add loading skeleton for view state initialization) — closed/superseded; the fork issue 41 ledger names it as the F7 port source (webview-ui sections only).
What this unit does at head 109f821
The CI mutation-diff changed-line advisory is a by-construction artifact of the stacked diff.

apiConfiguration: a conversation running in a view pinned to the saved profile kept sending the old token (e.g. after the Zoo Gateway callback rotated it) even though the view's buffer had caught up. The refresh now rebuilds the affected tasks' handlers in the pinned views, and the non-activating branch rebuilds this view's own handler when it holds the pin.Proofs: ClineProvider.spec green (the pinned-sibling refresh test now asserts the active task's handler is rebuilt with the saved settings, not just the private buffer); negative control: dropping the rebuild from the refresh reddens exactly that assertion, restores byte-exact (hash match); parallelMode/sticky-mode/webviewMessageHandler green; eslint

The review round on the api-wiring unit named four test-quality issues; the ones present in this unit are fixed here: the
viewStatesdescribe block moved out of thealwaysDenyUnapprovedCommandsblock (test names carried the wrong subject), the prune test'stoBeDefined()survival checks replaced with exact-shapetoEqualassertions (they pass even if pruning strips fields), the stale-temporary-entry test's fixed 10 ms wait replaced with awaiting the load itself (the negative assertion could pass vacuously on a slow load), and the readiness-cancel test's fake timers restored in afinallyblock (a failed assertion left fake timers active and hung a later real-timer test).Proofs: global-settings 9/9 where present, ClineProvider.spec green, sticky-mode green where present, api-task-control green where present; negative controls: pruning that strips
updatedAtreddens exactly the prune test, aloadViewStatethat adopts the unowned temporary-id entry reddens exactly the stale-entry test, restores byte-exact (hash match); eslint--max-warnings=0clean (src and types); prettier merge-ref gate ALL-MATCHED.Follow-up: review-round fixes from the series (head f528dcc)
A review round on the mode-profile-writes unit found that the profile-deletion re-pin updated each sibling view's buffer but not its running task: the posted state prefers the task's own
apiConfiguration, so a conversation in a view pinned to the deleted profile kept sending the deleted profile's settings. The re-pin now rebuilds the sibling's API handler with the replacement's settings and re-points the task's sticky profile name, mirroring the activation path.Proofs: ClineProvider.spec and sticky-mode green; eslint
--max-warnings=0clean; tsc clean except the two known local telemetry-dist noise lines; prettier merge-ref gate ALL-MATCHED. The rebuild's negative control (dropping it reddens exactly the sibling re-pin test, byte-exact restore) runs in the units that own that test.In addition: The view-state readiness bound no longer rejects headless callers whose webview never launched (it only rejects when the webview has launched and readiness failed), and the IPC start-task listener catches rejections since the IPC server does not await async listeners (new headless-fallback and launched-stuck tests; negative control: an unconditional timeout reddens exactly the fallback test). The readiness-cancel test now pins the bound's own timer via fake timers and a zero timer count instead of a global
clearTimeoutspy, and the mode-ordering test asserts the switch has not been called before the pending initialization is released (negative controls: dropping the timer clear / the initialization await reddens exactly the respective assertion).Proofs: ClineProvider.spec 299/299, sticky-mode 34/34, parallel-mode 40/40, Task.spec 190/190, api-task-control 26/26; every negative control reddens exactly its target test and restores byte-exact (hash match); eslint

taskApiConfigName === saved profile. Pinned-view overlays still refresh; regression tests cover both sites (negative control: removing either guard reddens exactly its test).afterEachnow disposes the per-test provider before resetting the instance registry, so providers leaveMcpServerManager's static provider set between tests.Updated this round (CodeRabbit follow-up 2, head 41bbc27)
taskApiConfigName === deleted profile(the view-buffer re-pin stays unconditional), so a pinned view whose task follows another sticky profile keeps its conversation's settings and persisted profile name. Regression test included (negative control: removing the guard reddens exactly that test); the existing sibling re-pin test's task double now names the deleted profile as its sticky profile, matching what the test asserts.Stryker suppression comments removed

viewStatesmap and the rollback restores it through the serialized queue, recovering sibling entries the activation's pruning evicted (CR Persistence Integrity).setGlobalStatepersistsparsed.datainstead of the raw payload (CR Security Boundaries).ContextProxy#updateGlobalStatelayer on this unit; the new tests pin that guard.Verification: new tests are focused negative controls (reverting each guard reddens exactly the matching test); ClineProvider.spec, webviewMessageHandler.spec spot-checks, api specs, spec-inclusive tsc --noEmit, eslint --max-warnings=0 (suppression counts unchanged) and prettier all green on this head.
Upstream refresh (head 92ae27e)
Merged the current
upstream/main(merge commit; the row-9 fix commit is unchanged and is the first parent) to clear the review gate's mergeability hold. Upstream refactoredupsertProviderProfileinto a newpersistProviderProfilemethod and added arunToCompletionqueue option; this unit's transactional body was ported into the new method unchanged and upstream'sPromise.allSettledactivation fix was adopted in it. ClineProvider.spec, webviewMessageHandler.spec, tsc --noEmit, eslint (suppression counts unchanged) and prettier re-verified green at this head. The first refreshed head's windows unit-test lane caught that upstream's newupdateProfileModeltests inClineProvider.apiHandlerRebuild.spec.tsmock the settings manager with a staticgetProfile, which starves the post-save read-back; the mock now repointsgetProfileat whatsaveConfigwrote (the real manager's behavior), and the file's 38 tests pass locally alongside the rest of the verification set.
