refactor(task): read abort and abortReason from run-state latches - #2283
Task.abort and Task.abortReason are now getters. They read latches.abort and latches.reason from runState. The two fields are deleted.
Implementation:
requestAbort, requestDispose and setAbortReason only send run-state events. They no longer write the fields.
The kernel never rejects abortRequested, reasonSet or disposeRequested. The latch always sets.
reasonSet keeps the first reason, as the old ??= did.
The getters keep the names abort and abortReason. The 41 and 4 existing reads work without change.
abort and abortReason leave ROUTED_FIELDS. Both values now come from the kernel, so the comparison cannot find a mismatch.
Tests:
Tests that assigned abort on a real Task or an Object.create(Task.prototype) double now use setAbortLatch from src/test-utils/run-state.ts. The helper changes only the abort latch and keeps the rest of the run state.
Task.run-shadow.spec.ts checks the abandoned latch after requestAbort and the first-reason rule.
Two no-explicit-any suppression counts drop by one.
Check with care:
The issue requires zero untagged divergence and zero untagged latch-event rejections on prerelease builds before this merge. Prerelease telemetry must show zero untagged RUN_STATE_DIVERGENCE events. This PR does not show that result. CI does not produce it.
abandoned is still a plain field. RSK-08 moves it.
Test Procedure
Run pnpm --dir src exec tsc --noEmit.
Run pnpm --dir src exec vitest run core/task core/webview core/assistant-message test-utils. 104 files and 1996 tests pass.
Run pnpm --dir src exec eslint --prune-suppressions --max-warnings=0 on the changed files. No suppression count increases.
ShadowCheckpointService.spec.ts fails with a GIT_COMMON_DIR guard error in the dev container. It fails the same way without this change.
The mocked E2E suite in apps/vscode-e2e passed in CI: e2e-mock.

Task cancellation status and reason now reflect the task’s run state, keeping reported cancellation information aligned with state changes.
Repeated cancellation requests now update the reported cancellation reason instead of retaining only the first reason, so the displayed reason reflects the latest cancellation request. This keeps cancellation details consistent when a task’s state or cancellation reason changes.
Task now derives abort status and cancellation reason from run state. Abort and disposal requests use run-state events. A test utility and related tests set abort state through the run-state latch.
Changes: Task abort state
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Back Task abort properties with run state src/core/task/Task.ts, src/core/task/run-state/runStateDivergence.ts, src/core/task/run-state/__tests__/runStateDivergence.spec.ts, src/core/task/__tests__/Task.run-shadow.spec.ts
Task.abort and Task.abortReason are getters derived from run state. Abort and disposal no longer assign the abort property directly. setAbortReason dispatches each supplied reason. Default divergence checks no longer compare abort fields.
Add run-state abort-latch test utility src/test-utils/run-state.ts, src/test-utils/__tests__/run-state.spec.ts
The new setAbortLatch helper copies an existing or initial run state and sets its abort latch. Tests cover initialization, state preservation, and both latch values.
Update tests to set abort through run state src/core/task/__tests__/*, src/core/webview/__tests__/*, src/eslint-suppressions.json
Task tests use setAbortLatch in place of direct abort assignments. Webview test typing and mock assignments are adjusted. Two suppression counts are reduced.
The changed abort and cancellation-reason behavior has no established correctness or availability risk and is mergeable with normal checks.

Explanation
The description is mostly complete. It includes the linked issue, implementation details, test procedure, test results, known test limitation, and documentation status. The checklist remains unchecked, and the required Get in Touch section is missing, but these omissions do not make the description incomplete or off-topic.
Full details: Linked Issues check
Explanation
Issue #1797 has no active contextual or parent targets. Its coding requirements are:
Add getters that read latches.abort and latches.reason. Met. Task.ts adds get abort() returning abort(this.runState) and get abortReason() returning abortReason(this.runState). Both selectors exist in run-state/runState.ts.
Flip the reads. Met. The getters keep the names abort and abortReason, so the existing reads resolve to the latch values without edits.
Delete the two fields and remove their helper writes. Met. The abort and abortReason fields are removed. requestAbort, requestDispose, and setAbortReason no longer assign them. abort and abortReason are removed from ROUTED_FIELDS in runStateDivergence.ts.
Keep abort true after stream end and disposal, and keep the run loop and guards working. Supported by code. disposeRequested sets latches.abort and latches.disposed. The abortRequested and reasonSet reducer cases always set the latch. reasonSet keeps the first reason, as the old ??= did.
Tests and E2E pass. Supported by author-reported results: tsc and the targeted Vitest run. The mocked E2E CI run is cited by link. I did not execute these checks or open the linked CI job.
The prerelease telemetry precondition (zero untagged divergence and latch-event rejections) is a release gate, not a coding requirement. It is not assessed here. The PR objectives report telemetry results from the author. The current PR description states that this PR does not show that result. This assessment does not rely on either statement.
I inspected the Task.ts and run-state diffs and the runState.ts reducer at the reviewed head. I did not inspect driveRunEvent directly. The synchronous update of runState before requestAbort returns relies on the existing shadow path.
Full details: Out of Scope Changes check
Explanation
Every changed file supports the migration in #1797:
src/core/task/Task.ts: adds the two getters, removes the two fields and their writes, and changes setAbortReason to dispatch reasonSet only. These are the core of the issue.
src/core/task/run-state/runStateDivergence.ts and its spec: remove abort and abortReason from ROUTED_FIELDS. The divergence comparison no longer checks fields that the kernel now serves.
src/test-utils/run-state.ts and src/test-utils/__tests__/run-state.spec.ts: add the setAbortLatch helper and its tests. The helper replaces direct task.abort assignments that are no longer valid on a getter.
Task test files (Task.persistence.spec.ts, Task.run-shadow.spec.ts, Task.spec.ts, ask-*.spec.ts, flushPendingToolResultsToHistory.spec.ts): replace direct abort writes with setAbortLatch. Task.run-shadow.spec.ts adds assertions for the abandoned latch, the first-reason rule, and initial abortReason. These support the new kernel-backed behavior.
src/core/webview/__tests__/ClineProvider.spec.ts and ClineProvider.flicker-free-cancel.spec.ts: use Object.assign on plain mock objects and adjust the MockTask type. These are fixture changes needed because the real Task no longer has a writable abort field.
src/eslint-suppressions.json: two no-explicit-any counts drop by one. This follows from the removed casts in the migrated tests.
No change alters runtime behavior beyond the issue scope. abandoned remains a plain field, as the PR description states, and it is not moved here.
Full details: Regression Evidence
Explanation
PASS: The changed Task getters and latch-driven helper behavior have focused coverage. Task.run-shadow.spec.ts covers initial undefined abortReason, first-reason preservation, requestAbort(false/true), requestDispose, and no rejections. runState.spec.ts covers initial getter values, abort/dispose latches, reason preservation, and all-phase acceptance. The ROUTED_FIELDS change has a focused divergence test. No durable visible UI change was introduced, so no Playwright component snapshot is required.
Full details: Security Boundaries
Explanation
No changed path meets a security failure condition. The production changes only replace Task.abort and Task.abortReason fields with getters over run-state latches, route abort/reason/dispose writes through the existing reducer, and remove those fields from divergence comparison. The reducer still sets the abort latch and rejects new asks when aborted (runState.ts:135-145, 165-185). Approval and queued-command policy checks still run through the existing checkAutoApproval and recheck paths; the PR does not change those controls. The remaining changes are test fixtures and test utilities. No changed code leaks secrets or PII, executes unvalidated input, or bypasses approval or allowlist controls.
Full details: Persistence Integrity
Explanation
No changed persistence path meets the failure condition. The production diff only replaces Task.abort and Task.abortReason fields with run-state getters and routes abort events through the reducer. The reducer always latches abort, and reasonSet preserves the first reason. No persistence call, await, write mode, rollback path, or persisted default changed. Persistence tests only replace direct test-state assignment with setAbortLatch.
Full details: Lifecycle Resource Cleanup
Explanation
No changed lifecycle path introduces cleanup leakage or duplicate work. Task.abort and Task.abortReason now read the run-state latches, while requestAbort and requestDispose still update state synchronously through driveRunEvent. The unchanged reducer accepts both events unconditionally and sets latches.abort (runState.ts:165-184). The abort/dispose cleanup sequence remains unchanged, including request cancellation, queue disposal, listener removal, terminal release, and controller cleanup. The remaining production change only removes abort fields and excludes them from divergence telemetry.

@coderabbitai The claim that Object.assign(task, { abort }) throws does not apply to ClineProvider.spec.ts. The file replaces Task with vi.mock("../../task/Task"). The mock constructor returns a plain object, so new Task(...) in that file does not build a real Task. A plain object has no getter, and the assignment sets the value.
The file passes: 313 tests, including all 10 sites that use Object.assign. setAbortLatch would not work there. It writes runState, and the mocked task and the provider never read runState.
Tests that use a real Task or an Object.create(Task.prototype) double use setAbortLatch from src/test-utils/run-state.ts.
Two checks are still open. Both are correct requirements:
Prerelease telemetry must show zero untagged RUN_STATE_DIVERGENCE events, including rejections of latch events.
The E2E suite in apps/vscode-e2e must pass.
The first needs prerelease telemetry access. The second needs CI access. This PR must not merge until both are recorded.
@edelauna You are correct. I withdraw the Object.assign(task, { abort }) finding.
I inspected src/core/webview/__tests__/ClineProvider.spec.ts. At Line 280, vi.mock("../../task/Task") replaces the constructor with a mock that returns an object literal. These objects do not inherit the real Task.abort getter. The getter-only assignment concern does not apply to these fixtures.
I did not rerun the tests. Your reported 313 passing tests are consistent with this mock setup.
The two verification requirements remain open:
Record a nightly result with zero untagged divergence and zero untagged latch-event rejections.
Record a passing E2E run for apps/vscode-e2e.
Do not merge until both results are recorded. This correction does not establish that either requirement has passed.

The comment asks whether lifecycle checks passed and requests that results be recorded. The diff does not break a repository-owned validation contract. The comment has no source-grounded defect and no code correction, so it does not support a review finding.
This PR implements the RSK-07 boundary. The documented nightly latch comparison is not recorded, and apps/vscode-e2e was not run. Run the required lifecycle tests, pnpm test, and E2E. @edelauna Agreed. No code change is needed for this finding.
Your update supplies the mocked E2E CI reference and reports passing Linux and Windows unit tests, plus 104 files and 1,996 tests locally. I have not independently checked those results.
The remaining validation item is the nightly result. Before merge, a maintainer with nightly access must record:
Zero untagged divergence.
Zero untagged latch-event rejections.
This thread remains open for that evidence, not for a production defect in the getters.
I couldn't check this conversation for new learnings, so no new learning was saved.
Unit tests: platform-unit-test passed on Linux and Windows. The affected suites also pass locally: 104 files and 1996 tests.
Prerelease telemetry: still open. Prerelease builds must show zero untagged RUN_STATE_DIVERGENCE events, including rejections of latch events. CI does not produce this result. A maintainer with telemetry access must record it before merge.
The PR body now says this. No code change is needed for the Task.ts:3535 comment.
@edelauna I verified the linked e2e-mock job against the current PR head, 51721f8.
Mocked E2E: passed. Both test steps succeeded. The cached-result shortcut was skipped, so the tests ran.
Unit tests: you report passing Linux and Windows jobs and 104 files / 1,996 tests locally. I did not independently verify those results.
Nightly: still required before merge. A maintainer must record zero untagged divergence and zero untagged latch-event rejections.
The PR body now records the E2E result and the missing nightly result. No code change is needed for the validation concern at Task.ts Line 3535. That requirement remains open until the nightly evidence is recorded.
@edelauna You are correct. I withdraw the getter-only assignment finding.
In src/core/webview/__tests__/ClineProvider.spec.ts, Line 280, the mocked Task constructor returns a plain object. It has no Task.prototype or abort accessor. The 10 Object.assign(task, { abort }) sites therefore do not have the reported getter-only failure. No change to setAbortLatch is needed for these fixtures. This matches the supplied Learning.
I did not rerun the tests.
For validation, the later update in this conversation records a passing mocked E2E run. Prerelease telemetry remains open. A maintainer with telemetry access must record zero untagged RUN_STATE_DIVERGENCE events, including latch-event rejections, before merge. CI does not establish that result.

These checks use public extension APIs and mocked responses; they are not manual button-click tests or live-provider validation. The temporary harness was removed after testing.
The transient local missing-WASM packaging failure is consistent with concurrent bundling cleaning src/dist while VSIX packaging reads it. Serial builds passed.
Mocked E2E CI and Linux/Windows unit CI also passed. This records validation evidence; it does not assert that every merge gate is complete.

@edelaunaThe supplied evidence satisfies the prerelease precondition in #1797 for the read switch at 51721f8. The requirement is no longer missing validation evidence.
I independently verified:
Publish run 733 succeeded at a15ba8c, including VSIX packaging and both marketplace publishes.
That revision still compares abort and abortReason.
Prerelease builds enable divergence checks.
KNOWN_RACES is empty.
Rejection telemetry includes the kind and eventTag properties used by your query.
Using the earlier comparison-enabled build is appropriate here. This is a precondition for switching reads, not a requirement to collect shadow comparisons after removing those comparisons.
Your recorded query reports zero untagged divergences and zero untagged latch-event rejections for the specified version and window. The reported task activity provides evidence that the window was not idle. I did not independently access the private telemetry or reproduce the local smoke tests.
The telemetry coverage and unproven failure-event ingestion remain stated limitations. They are not evidence of a defect. The supplied issue requirement does not require forced production divergence injection.
The packaging and extension-host smoke results provide additional validation for cancellation and eviction behavior. They remain mocked-response checks, as you stated.
No code change is needed for this validation concern. This assessment does not establish that every merge gate is complete or change the provider’s approval status.

Description
Task.abortandTask.abortReasonare now getters. They readlatches.abortandlatches.reasonfromrunState. The two fields are deleted.Implementation:
requestAbort, requestDisposeandsetAbortReasononly send run-state events. They no longer write the fields.abortRequested,reasonSetordisposeRequested. The latch always sets.reasonSetkeeps the first reason, as the old??=did.abortandabortReason. The 41 and 4 existing reads work without change.abortandabortReasonleaveROUTED_FIELDS.
