The splash screen can be customised in two different ways, either by including a new logo or image file, or by completely replacing the Plymouth theme used to generate the splash screen.

**NOTE:** Because custom splash screens need to be authenticated before being loaded, they cannot be used very early in boot. There will be a short time where a default splash screen will be used. This is needed for example in case a recovery key needs to be entered, which can only happen before a custom splash screen can be loaded.

If you wish to hide the default splash, you may adjust a delay before the splash screen is shown. This can be done with a [kernel boot parameter](/reference/kernel-boot-parameters). For example, to delay
the splash for 5 seconds:

plymouth.splash-delay=5
```
