YouTube Transcript Search - Chrome Extension

A Chrome extension that permanently displays YouTube video transcripts in the sidebar, with search functionality and the ability to copy the complete text.

What does this extension do?

This extension does practically the same thing as YouTube's native transcription tool, but with two major differences:

  1. Always visible: The transcript stays visible in the sidebar while you watch the video, you don't have to constantly open and close the panel.

  2. You can copy the text: It includes a "Copy All" button that copies the entire transcript to the clipboard with a single click.

Additional features

  • 🔍 Real-time search: Search for words or phrases within the transcript
  • ⏱️ Clickable timestamps: Click on any line to jump to that moment in the video
  • 🌓 Adapts to theme: Works in YouTube's light and dark mode
  • 🌐 Multiple languages: If the video has subtitles in multiple languages, you can switch between them

How to install the extension in Chrome

Step 1: Download the files

Download this complete folder to your computer (you can download the ZIP from GitHub and extract it).

Step 2: Open Chrome extensions

  1. Open Google Chrome
  2. In the address bar, type: chrome://extensions/
  3. Press Enter

Step 3: Enable developer mode

In the upper right corner of the page, you'll see a toggle that says "Developer mode".

Enable it (it should turn blue).

Step 4: Load the extension

  1. Click the "Load unpacked" button
  2. Find and select the folder where you downloaded the extension files
  3. Click "Select folder"

Done! The extension is now installed.

How to use the extension

  1. Go to any YouTube video (for example: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dQw4w9WgXcQ)

  2. The extension loads automatically - You'll see a new panel in the sidebar that says "Video Transcript"

  3. Click on "Load Transcript" - This will load the video's transcripts

  4. That's it! Now you can:

    • View the entire transcript while watching the video
    • Search for words in the search box
    • Click on any line to jump to that moment
    • Copy the entire transcript with the "Copy All" button
