Tipping Kitty is a tip calculator application for iOS.
Submitted by: Nguyen Do
Time spent: 21 hours spent in total
The following required functionality is complete:
- User can enter a bill amount, choose a tip percentage, and see the tip and total values.
- Settings page to change the default tip percentage.
The following optional features are implemented:
- UI animations
- Remembering the bill amount across app restarts (if <10mins)
- Using locale-specific currency and currency thousands separators.
- Making sure the keyboard is always visible and the bill amount is always the first responder. This way the user doesn't have to tap anywhere to use this app. Just launch the app and start typing.
The following additional features are implemented:
- Implementing a completely new keypad.
- Implementing Split Bill function.
Here's a walkthrough of implemented user stories:

Challenges encountered while building the app:
- Work on the app user interface is quite time consuming.
- The numeric keypad looks simple but needs to handle with extra carefullness.
- Deciding on when and where to set and get the NSUserDefaults is not an easy job.
- My intention is to support screen rotation i.e. in landscape display, the keypad and navigation bar is on one side, all other is on the other side. But it is far more difficult for a newbie :)
- Not enough time to implement the feature 'press and hold' for the '-' and '+' buttons. Without this feature, the app would disappoint a certain number of users - including me.
