Two layouts for writing in the Gothic language using the Gothic alphabet and the Latin alphabet. For use in Gothic language learning, revival communities, transcriptions and academics.

Considerations made for the Gothic alphabet layout:

  • Phonetically the QWERTY order for familiarity, and it's used in common PC keyboard layouts too.
  • The locations of the letters 𐌸 and 𐍈 are where C and V are, as those are their common substitutes for when þ and ƕ are difficult to type. The location of 𐌹̈ at the Y key is done in some Gothic PC layouts, and it is the only Gothic character with a diacritic, and having a long press only for 𐌹 would be strange.
  • The locations of the non-phonetic characters 𐍁 and 𐍊 are often placed on a PC keyboard to the right of the P key, though for space reasons, I've placed 𐍊 where the shift key would have been (it coincidentally also looks like an arrow like shift arrow). And 𐍁 I placed to the right of the L key, preventing any keys from being reduced in width.

Considerations made for the Latin alphabet layout:

  • In a world where the Gothic language continued to be spoken and they had made use of the Latin alphabet, I'm sure they would have had the full 26 letters plus þ and ƕ (if they hadn't turned those into digraphs or something else) on their keyboards, even if just to type foreign words. And it makes it easier to also quickly type in other languages for when discussing Gothic.
  • þ is placed where the Icelandic layout has theirs, to the right of M.
  • ƕ is placed to the right of L, again to prevent any keys from being squished, and it's on the same row as H.
  • All vowels have long-press versions with common Germanic transcription diacritics, acute accents and macrons.
  • ï not having its own key as it isn't used that often in Gothic transcriptions anyway, but it's quickly accessible by long-pressing Y (in the position of the above Gothic 𐌹̈), instead of long-pressing i and then looking for ï in the bubble.
  • Vowels with accent marks are more commonly used than the ones with macrons which is why they are first in the list of long-press characters.
