This Pull Request fixes/closes #2732.

It changes the following:

Checks if the current working directory is git
and if its we take its parent directory

I followed the checklist:

~~I added unittests~~ (no need)
I ran make check without errors
I tested the overall application
I added an appropriate item to the changelog
