[Bug]: Duplicates the folder structure instead of moving its contents #992

Open

Description

@lars987

Describe the bug

Renaming a nested folder duplicates the folder structure instead of moving its contents

To reproduce

massCode version: 6.2.1
Operating system: Windows 11

Steps to reproduce:

Create the following folder structure:
Folder A / Folder B / Folder C

Add content inside Folder C.

Rename Folder B to Folder B1 from the massCode sidebar.

Expected result:

Folder A / Folder B1 / Folder C exists and contains the original data. Folder B no longer exists.

Actual result:

Two separate structures are shown:

Folder A / Folder B / Folder C — the original folder remains and still contains all data.

Folder A / Folder B1 / Folder C — a new but empty folder structure is created.

The issue occurs with both synchronized and non-synchronized vault locations on Windows 11. Renaming a folder without nested subfolders works normally.

Thanks for recording this! Could you drag the video file itself into a comment so we can watch it here? If it’s too large to upload, a short clip showing the rename and the resulting folder tree would be enough.

You can turn your existing MP4 into a GIF with Ezgif. Enable Local processing and select the MP4. Set the start time just before you rename Folder B and the end time once both folders are visible. Convert the clip to GIF, click Save, then drag the saved .gif into a comment here.

The GIF shows text being entered in “Test Snippet.” It ends before the folder is renamed, so I can’t verify the reported duplication from this clip.

For security reasons, I don’t open ZIP attachments from issue reports. The GIF ends before the folder is renamed. Please attach a clip directly to this issue showing the rename and both folders in the sidebar afterward.

If that’s too much trouble, that’s fine. Just let me know and I’ll close the issue.

Here is a description of the process:

    1. In massCode, the nested folder structure test → test → test contains a snippet named “Test Snippet.” Its text is updated from “Test” to “Test Snippet.”
    2. The top-level test folder is renamed to new_test using the context menu.
    3. After renaming, two folder structures appear: new_test → test → test and test → test → test.
    4. The selected subfolder under new_test displays “No snippets.”
    5. The original test folder structure is expanded. The snippet is still there. It is opened, and “here we go” is added to its content.

The unexpected behavior is that the original folder structure reappears after renaming, and the snippet remains there instead of appearing under the renamed folder.

I tested the top-level folder rename on macOS with massCode 6.3.1. The snippet stayed under the renamed folder, and no duplicate appeared. I haven’t tested this on Windows 11.

During testing, I found a separate bug: if the filesystem rejects a rename, massCode can later create an empty folder tree under the new name while the snippet stays in the original folder. I don’t know whether that happened in your case. The GIF ends before the rename, so I couldn’t see the result. Did massCode show an error when you renamed the folder?

No, massCode shows no errors. Attached is a video showing the compression process.

I just noticed that the issue lists massCode 6.2.1, but the recording shows v5.12.0 in the bottom-left corner. Did you also reproduce the folder duplication on 6.2.1, or only on 5.12.0?

Edit: I can only support the latest version - 6.

Yes, I'm having the same problem on another Windows PC with the current version 6.2.1. I've now updated the version to 6.2.1 on this PC and reproduced the problem; it's still there.
