Summary

This PR closes #125 and introduce support for a generic OpenID Connect provider such as Keycloak, Okta, Auth0, Entra ID, Authentik, Zitadel etc.

This PR only supports OIDC for Confidential Clients with PKCE and S256 enabled as per current security best practices but possible to be widened in future.

Testing

  • new tests added for introduced functionality
  • manual testing with Keycloak using otari branch
  • uv run pytest tests/ -v on Python 3.11, 3.12, 3.13 (Linux): 880 passed, 14 skipped (the skips are real-provider integration tests)
  • Same test matrix on macOS (CI)
  • New OIDC and identity-registry tests on their own (tests/providers/test_oidc.py, tests/providers/test_identity_registry.py): 95 passed
  • uv run pre-commit run --all-files: merge-conflict, whitespace, EOF, ruff, ruff-format, detect-secrets, ty, uv-lock
  • uv lock --check: lockfile matches pyproject.toml
  • uv build: sdist and wheel build cleanly
  • make test-integration with provider credentials (no existing provider modules changed; no OIDC integration test yet)

Summary by CodeRabbit

Change: Feature

Merge Risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to 043e7

This adds generic OIDC login. A userinfo response that omits the subject can still supply a verified email for the logged-in user, so identity binding is weaker than the OIDC specification requires. Fix this before merging. A malformed userinfo URL from a provider also raises an unexpected error type.

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to 043e7

The integration checks issuer, audience and subject consistency, but permits unencrypted endpoints while relying on authenticated transport for identity authenticity. It also accepts providers whose PKCE support is unknown without an independent nonce binding. These risks depend on provider configuration and external behavior; they are not demonstrated attacks against correctly configured HTTPS providers with enforced S256.

Retained concerns

  • Medium · security · observed: The new discovery-to-identity path accepts HTTP token and userinfo endpoints, sending client credentials or bearer tokens without protected transport. ID-token signatures are not checked because authenticity is delegated to TLS, but this prerequisite is not enforced. Exposure requires an insecure endpoint or compromised discovery/transport path; documented operator responsibility and optional transport controls can mitigate it.
  • Medium · security · inferred: Missing, empty or malformed PKCE capability metadata is accepted even though this integration relies on PKCE rather than a nonce for code/session binding. Generating S256 does not prove that the provider enforces it. If an accepted provider ignores the challenge, an injected code may lack the intended session binding; explicit advertisements excluding S256 are correctly rejected.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — An insecure credential-bearing back-channel can expose the configured client secret, authorization codes, refresh tokens or bearer tokens, and permit manipulation of identities trusted through that channel. Potential exposure includes users sharing the affected provider configuration and resources authorized by leaked tokens. Cross-tenant reach depends on shared credentials and application wiring; no deployment evidence establishes repository-wide or environment-wide exposure.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — The transport attack path requires an insecure configured endpoint, control over unauthenticated discovery delivery, or a compromised outbound path. An active attacker on an HTTP token channel can alter claims while retaining expected issuer and audience values. Claim checks alone do not authenticate that response; properly authenticated HTTPS or equivalent enforced transport is the strongest countermeasure.
  • inferred — Code injection remains a conditional concern for accepted providers that do not enforce PKCE. An attacker would need a usable authorization code and a way to inject it into another session's callback. A valid state value can protect callback correlation without proving that the injected code belongs to the stored verifier when the provider ignores that verifier.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Controls include exact discovery issuer matching, callback issuer validation before redemption, ID-token issuer and audience checks, and rejection of conflicting token/userinfo subjects. Transport factories separately govern discovery, token exchange and userinfo connections; supplying one does not automatically constrain the other two.
  • observed — Missing or unparseable ID tokens fall back to bearer-authenticated userinfo rather than enforcing ID-token presence. The handler also ignores the passed ProviderConfig and validates against its independently captured issuer and client ID. Correct handler/config pairing and authenticated userinfo delivery therefore remain caller contracts; neither behavior alone establishes an exploitable identity substitution.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — The stored-state path saves pending state before returning the authorization URL, validates callback issuer before consumption, and consumes state before token exchange. The memory store removes entries without an await point and rejects expired entries, preventing repeated or concurrent reuse within its supported single-process model. Failure or interruption after consumption requires fresh authorization instead of replaying the callback. Direct exchange leaves state handling to the caller, and distributed storage must preserve atomic consumption.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Require authenticated HTTPS for production discovery and credential-bearing endpoints, with any development exception explicit. Apply network and destination policy consistently across discovery, token exchange and userinfo rather than relying on a single transport hook.
  • proposed — Treat unknown PKCE capability as requiring explicit, verified S256 support, or add a fresh per-request nonce with persisted binding and ID-token validation. A constant nonce in extra_params would not provide that guarantee.

- Around line 477-480: Update the userinfo subject check around `_claim_str` so
that, when validated ID-token claims are present and a userinfo response is
used, a missing `sub` or one that differs from `claims_subject` raises
`IdentityFetchError` before any userinfo fields are used. Add a test covering a
userinfo response without `sub` alongside an ID token.

Discover an OpenID provider's configuration document from its issuer and
build a config from it, so Keycloak, Okta, Auth0, Entra ID, Authentik,
Zitadel, Dex, and Ping need no module apiece.

`discover` refuses a document naming a different issuer (OIDC Discovery
1.0 section 4.3) and carries the issuer onto the config so the
authorization-response `iss` is checked before a code is redeemed (RFC
9207). `preset` refuses a provider that does not advertise S256: with no
`nonce` on a frozen config, PKCE is the only thing binding a code to the
session that requested it.

Identity is read from the token-endpoint ID token, validated with
authlib's `CodeIDToken` (OIDC Core 1.0 section 3.1.3.7), with a userinfo
`sub` mismatch refused. The handler is passed explicitly rather than
inferred: host matching cannot answer for a connection whose hosts the
operator chose, so the module registers no resolver and
`identity_providers()` enumerates the ones that can answer.

`ServerMetadata` gains `userinfo_url` and `jwks_url`.
- identity_handler raises ConfigurationError for issuer-less metadata,
matching preset, so OidcDiscoveryError keeps meaning discovery failed.
- A userinfo response with no sub beside a validated ID token is refused
(OpenID Connect Core 1.0 section 5.3.2). Before, it could lend a
verified email to the ID token's subject.
- _fetch_userinfo wraps httpx.InvalidURL in IdentityFetchError; the
userinfo URL comes from the discovery document unvalidated.
- Hoist the test client secret into an allowlisted constant so the
  detect-secrets hook passes.

Every other documented error, McpDiscoveryError included, is importable
from apron_auth; OidcDiscoveryError was only reachable via
apron_auth.errors.

The README said only a disagreeing sub was refused; since the review
fix, a missing one is too.
CodeRabbit's docstring coverage check scored the functions this PR
touches at 60% against an 80% threshold. Every gap was a test function,
fixture or helper; give each a one-line docstring naming what it checks.
