this is the companion PR to a change to buildRustCrate NixOS/nixpkgs#428140
I also added a regression test, but it does not pass with older nixpkgs, I don't know what to do about it.
I also updated one of the sample project to not use a version of the
timecrate that fails to build with recent rustc.
