Objective

Close OPS-33 review findings for the CodeQL py/redos alert in GRAPHQL_RESOLVER and verify the browser-cookie CSRF boundary. See OPS-33.

Changes

  • Remove overlapping horizontal-whitespace quantifiers from the resolver regex.
  • Add a bounded subprocess regression for long non-matching whitespace input.
  • Add structured KDoc to the public transport tests.
  • Add an HTTP-level success test for a cookie-authenticated GraphQL mutation with matching CSRF proof.
  • Record the review follow-up in the OPS-33 task evidence.

Validation

  • uv run --frozen --no-build python3 -m unittest tools.contracts.test_validate_public_surface — passed, 3 tests.
  • uv run --frozen --no-build python3 tools/contracts/validate_public_surface.py — passed, 45 REST operations and 9 GraphQL root operations.
  • make python-typecheck — passed, 76 source files.
  • ./gradlew :app:bff:test --tests 'com.subhrodip.squarewise.bff.graphql.GraphqlHttpTransportTest' --no-daemon --console=plain — BUILD SUCCESSFUL.
  • git diff --check — passed.

Risk and compatibility

  • No API, schema, persistence, or dependency changes.
  • The regex remains limited to resolver annotations and Kotlin function declarations; malformed or whitespace-heavy non-matches now fail safely within the test timeout.
  • CSRF behavior is unchanged: cookie-backed mutations require matching proof, while bearer-native requests remain unaffected.
  • Rollback is a normal revert of this PR.

Checklist

  • Tests added or updated.
  • Validation results recorded.
  • Task documentation updated.
  • Public test methods have KDoc.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Tests
    • Added coverage confirming cookie-authenticated GraphQL mutations are rejected without CSRF proof and succeed when a matching CSRF token is provided.
    • Added regression checks for multiline GraphQL resolver declarations and long whitespace inputs.
  • Chores
    • Updated public-surface validation to recognize supported line breaks and handle whitespace more precisely.
  • Documentation
    • Recorded task progress, validation results, and follow-up review notes.

Walkthrough

The resolver pattern now matches horizontal whitespace and explicit CRLF or LF line breaks. Regression tests cover multiline annotations and long non-resolver inputs. GraphQL transport tests cover cookie-authenticated mutations with missing and matching CSRF proof. OPS-33 records document the changes and validation.

GRAPHQL_RESOLVER matches horizontal whitespace and explicit line breaks. Tests cover multiline annotations, non-resolver text after a 1,024-newline gap, and a 32,000-space input with a two-second timeout. OPS-33 records document the change and validation.

P1 Badge Document the new public transport test with KDoc

The new public test method lacks the structured KDoc required by AGENTS.md for all public methods. Add a /** ... */ comment documenting the trusted-origin, access-cookie, and missing-CSRF-proof scenario and the expected rejection before downstream execution; the descriptive test name does not satisfy the explicitly required documentation format.

Add a long space-run nonmatch case to the resolver tests.

The head GRAPHQL_RESOLVER pattern places [ \t]* after the repeated newline group and before fun. For @QueryMapping\n followed by a long run of spaces and no fun, the regex engine can split that run in many ways before it fails. Both current tests use only newline gaps, so this path is not exercised.

The test below checks the result for this input. It does not check runtime, so it does not detect a slowdown.

🧪 Suggested test addition
     def test_resolver_pattern_rejects_non_resolver_text(self) -> None:
"""A long newline-only gap without a function must not match."""
         source = "@QueryMapping\n" + ("\n" * 1024) + "not_a_function"
         self.assertEqual(GRAPHQL_RESOLVER.findall(source), [])
+
+    def test_resolver_pattern_rejects_long_space_run(self) -> None:
+ """A long horizontal-whitespace gap without a function must not match."""
+ source = "@QueryMapping\n" + (" " * 8000) + "not_a_function"
+ self.assertEqual(GRAPHQL_RESOLVER.findall(source), [])

A timing check is still needed to detect the slowdown. Do not use a fixed 1.0 s limit at 5,000 spaces. Measured on this machine, the head pattern took 0.73 s at 8,000 spaces and about 3.0 s at 16,000 spaces. A 5,000-space input would likely finish well under 1.0 s and pass the regressed pattern. Choose the input size and time limit from measurements on CI hardware against the fixed pattern. Run the timed match in a subprocess with a timeout, so a regressed pattern fails the test instead of hanging the suite.

Add a positive HTTP case for cookie-authenticated GraphQL mutations.

The new test at GraphqlHttpTransportTest.kt:235-245 asserts only the 403 for a missing CSRF header. No HTTP-level test sends a cookie-bearing GraphQL POST with matching CSRF proof. A denial by another HTTP-layer component would pass this suite, because the fixture permits all exchanges. The filter-level positive case in BrowserCsrfWebFilterTest does not run through the HTTP stack.

Assert the response body as well as the status. GraphQL execution errors also return HTTP 200, so isOk alone does not show that the request succeeded.

Use a gateway-backed mutation in the denied-request test.

The test at lines 240-249 sends mutation { __typename }. That selection does not call either gateway. verifyNoInteractions therefore passes even if a createGroup resolver runs before the CSRF check. The test does not cover the stated protection against gateway-backed mutation side effects.

Send a gateway-backed mutation in the denied request. The 403 and verifyNoInteractions assertions stay unchanged.

Suggested fix

+ .bodyValue(mapOf("query" to "mutation { createGroup(input: { name: \"CSRF\", kind: TRIP, currency: \"EUR\" }) { id } }"))

Add a mismatched-CSRF test for the cookie-authenticated GraphQL path.

The no-proof test sends no squarewise_csrf cookie and no X-CSRF-Token header. The matching-proof test sends equal values. No test in GraphqlHttpTransportTest.kt sends a cookie-authenticated /graphql request with a different nonblank header and cookie. If the !sameValue(cookie, header) condition in BrowserCsrfWebFilter were replaced by a presence-only check, both tests would still pass. The suite in this file would not detect that regression.

The added test below covers only the 403 rejection for mismatched values.

⚠️ Unverified finding
We couldn't verify this from the code. It is shown for review, not as a verified issue.

Replacing \s with spaces, tabs, and explicit newlines excludes form feed between a mapping annotation and fun. If Kotlin accepts form feed there, validate_graphql can miss a valid resolver.

Public-surface validation reports that Query.groups has no resolver despite the Kotlin resolver being present.

This can occur when: A BFF Kotlin source contains @QueryMapping\f fun groups, and the schema declares Query.groups.

⚠️ Unverified finding
We couldn't verify this from the code. It is shown for review, not as a verified issue.

Possible test gap: the cookie-backed success test stubs createGroup with a null authorization argument. If the access cookie is meant to supply the downstream credential, an implementation that drops that credential can still return the asserted group data.

The test passes, but expense-core may reject the production mutation as unauthenticated.

This can occur when: A real browser session creates a group using an access cookie, while the BFF forwards no authorization credential to the expense-core gateway.

Implemented the latest review feedback in 0bf0e1b3:

  • Replaced the subprocess assert with explicit SystemExit, so the regex check remains active under PYTHONOPTIMIZE=1.
  • Verified the focused unittest normally and with optimization enabled.
  • make python-typecheck passes.

Review threads are intentionally left unresolved for reviewer action.
