Turndown 7.2.4 GitHub source TurndownService turndown repeated calls state
💡 Result:
In Turndown version 7.2.4, the TurndownService instance is designed to be reusable for repeated calls to the turndown method [1][2][3]. You do not need to instantiate a new service for each conversion [4]. When using a single TurndownService instance for multiple calls: 1. State persistence: The service maintains the configuration established during initialization (options) and any modifications made via addRule, keep, remove, or use (plugins) [1][5][6]. These settings persist across all subsequent calls to the turndown method [1][7]. 2. Chaining and precedence: If you use methods like keep or remove, they modify the internal rule set of the specific instance [1][2]. These changes are cumulative and persist for the lifetime of that instance [1]. 3. Performance: Reusing the same instance is the recommended pattern for batch processing or sequential conversions, as it avoids the overhead of re-initializing the service and re-registering rules [4]. 4. Memory usage: While the service is designed for reuse, be aware that complex DOM operations performed during conversion (often involving underlying dependencies like JSDOM in Node.js environments) may consume memory [8]. If you process an extremely high volume of documents or very large HTML strings within a single process, ensure you are not leaking references or hitting environment-specific heap limits [8]. In summary, the TurndownService is stateful regarding its configuration (rules and options) but stateless regarding the specific HTML input, making it safe and efficient to call turndown multiple times on the same instance [5][4][3].

Move Turndown setup outside the measured callback.
turndown(html) creates and configures TurndownService on every benchmark iteration. The Turndown measurement includes setup, while Bun.markdown.fromHTML(html) measures conversion only. Create one configured service per input before registering the benchmark, then call td.turndown(html) in the callback. Turndown 7.2.4 supports repeated calls on the same service.

Enforce MAX_INPUT_LEN in convert.
The public from_html::convert accepts oversized &str values and passes them to convert_tendril. Debug builds panic at debug_assert!; release builds skip the only bound and pass oversized input to the parser. Reject oversized input before constructing StrTendril, using a Result<String, InputTooLong> contract consistent with convert_utf8_bytes.

Bound the lossy conversion before allocation.
String::from_utf8_lossy(©).into_owned() allocates the replacement string before line 220 checks its length. Invalid input can therefore allocate up to three times its input size. Do not reject every invalid buffer above MAX_INPUT_LEN / 3, because mostly valid buffers in that range can still produce bounded output. Compute the expanded length without allocating, reject only lengths above MAX_INPUT_LEN, then create the owned string.

String::from_utf8_lossy so it computes the lossy output length without

Do not classify normal strikethrough as an intentional deviation.
\s* permits zero whitespace, so this pattern still matches ~~text~~. The generator can create nested <del> output with that form. Those seeds increment skipped and bypass expectEquivalent. Require token boundaries that identify only an empty or whitespace-only deletion pair.

Use comptime string map it'll be faster
It's possible, but I think it'll probably be slower and less compatible with turndown. I'll implement it for now and measure the performance. |

🟡 (optional) find_in_scope treats every foreign element as a scope boundary (if !o.html { return None }), but per HTML §13.2.4.2 only SVG foreignObject/desc/title and MathML mi/mo/mn/ms/mtext/annotation-xml are — <svg>, <g>, <path> etc. are not. So <h1><svg><path></h1><p>text</p> (unclosed inline SVG icon, a common authoring slip) ignores </h1> and emits # text; <blockquote><svg><g></blockquote><p>x emits > x. Fix: continue past foreign elements whose name is not an integration point instead of returning None, at both this site and the identical !o.html scope check in adoption_agency (line 512).
Extended reasoning...
Trace <h1><svg><path></h1><p>text</p>: <svg> is reported with Namespace::Svg → foreign path pushes Open{html:false,name:"svg"}; <path> likewise. </h1> reaches end_tag → line 948 close_in_scope([H1..H6], []) → find_in_scope iterates from the top, hits path with !o.html at line 301-302 and returns None, so the end tag is dropped and h1/svg/path stay open. <p> then breaks out (lines 682-688 pop path and svg) but opens inside the still-open <h1>; text lands under h1 → emitter renders # text. A browser (and the spec) pops through h1 on </h1> because <svg>/<path> are not in the default-scope list, so text is a body-level paragraph. close_list_item (line 383) already walks past non-integration foreign elements correctly, so implied closes work while explicit </li>/</p>/</div>/</hN>/</blockquote> do not — an internal inconsistency. The same over-broad check appears at line 512 (.any(|o| !o.html || is_scope_boundary(o.tag))), so <b><svg><g></b> leaves the <b> open and listed for reopening. This is new-in-PR code (no…
Verification: normal — new API; a spec-conformance bug in find_in_scope produces a wrong tree on realistic malformed input (unclosed inline SVG in a heading/blockquote), and the divergence is not among the browser-tree differences the PR description enumerates. 🟡 (optional) The per-tag dropped[] counters are never cleared when the stack falls back below MAX_TREE_DEPTH, so a start tag dropped at the cap whose end tag never arrives (e.g. "<div>".repeat(512)+"<code>x"+"</div>".repeat(512)) leaves dropped[Code]==1 for the rest of the document — the next well-formed </code> at any depth is then swallowed here and its element stays open. Fix: only consult dropped[] while still inside the over-deep region (e.g. gate on self.stack.len() >= MAX_TREE_DEPTH, or reset the counters when the stack shrinks below the cap), so a stale count can never eat an end tag for an element that was actually opened.
Extended reasoning...
New in commit 7379ee2 (the switch from HtmlRewriter end-tag handlers to a raw TransformController). start_tag at tree.rs:642-654 increments dropped[tag]/dropped_total for every non-void, non-ignored start tag past the depth cap; end_tag at 898-912 decrements and returns early whenever dropped[t] > 0. Nothing else touches the counters. Trace "<div>".repeat(512)+"<code>x"+"</div>".repeat(512)+"<p><code>a</code>b</p>": the <code> at depth 512 is dropped (dropped[Code]=1); no </code> follows, and each of the 512 </div>s hits dropped[Div]==0 and closes a real div, so dropped[Code] survives to depth 0. In the trailing paragraph <code> opens normally (stack < 512); </code> reaches line 904 with t=Code, dropped[Code]>0, is decremented and returns — the real <code> is left on the stack, so b renders inside it and the emitter produces `ab` instead of `a`b. The same stale-counter path also mismatches namespaces: an <svg> dropped at the cap is recorded under Tag::Other (line 651, !html), but </svg> at 899 sees an HTML…
Verification: nit — adversarial-only trigger (≥512-deep nesting), output degradation not a crash/DoS; consistent with the tree.rs:453 grading for the same failure mode. The mechanism holds exactly as described. The only sites touching dropped[]/dropped_total in the whole file are: - init: tree.rs:139-140 dropped: [0; Tag::COUNT], dropped_total: 0 - increment: tree.rs:652-653 in start_tag under the…

🔴 Line-prefixing rules give hostile input a ~1000× memory amplifier: <blockquote>×511 around a <pre> with N newlines emits ~1022N bytes (every line carries 511 > prefixes) and two adjacent scratch buffers of that size are live while copying, so a 1 MB input peaks near 1 GB and input near MAX_INPUT_LEN OOMs — the PR's linear-for-hostile-markup guarantee does not hold. Fix: bound the cumulative per-line prefix (stop adding > /indent past a fixed total width) so output stays within a small multiple of input at any nesting depth. Sibling: list_item at emit.rs:379-389 (nested <ol start=1000000000000000000><li> adds 21 bytes/line/level, ~5000× for 255 levels).
Extended reasoning...
Input "<blockquote>".repeat(511) + "<pre>" + "\n".repeat(N) + "</pre>" (≈ 6 KB + N bytes). Tree: 511 blockquotes fill stack to 511 (< MAX_TREE_DEPTH 512), <pre> opens at 512 (tree.rs:733 — not void, stack.len()=511), text lands under it and is not collapsed (whitespace.rs:76-80 treats Tag::Pre as opaque). Emitter: each blockquote frame takes a scratch buffer (emit.rs:243), recurses via process_children(node, &mut content, depth+1, ..), then re-prefixes every line of content with > into out (emit.rs:251-260). content_510 gets code_block's fenced output (~N lines); content_d ≈ 2(511-d)·N; content_0 ≈ 1020N; the final out ≈ 1022N. POOLED_BUF_MAX (emit.rs:45/64-68) only frees a buffer after return_buf, so during frame d's copy content_d and content_{d-1} are both live — ≈ 2040N at d=1. For N=500 000 (input ≈ 1 MB) peak ≈ 1 GB and output ≈ 500 MB; for N ≈ MAX_INPUT_LEN peak ≈ 1 TB. list_item is the same shape: indent = rep.len() - prefix_start (emit.rs:371) can be 21 bytes for start near i64::MAX, and every continuation line gets…
Verification: nit — the amplification mechanism is real, but it is a bounded constant-factor blowup (≤ ~2×MAX_TREE_DEPTH ≈ 1024×) producing correct output, and any fix necessarily sacrifices fidelity; that distinguishes it from the two already-reported amplifiers (emit.rs:146 stacks D duplicate copies of the same whitespace — wrong output; emit.rs:501 is truly quadratic/unbounded). Adds the inverse of Bun.markdown.html(): a synchronous HTML -> Markdown converter. It takes a document or fragment (string or UTF-8 buffer) and returns GitHub Flavored Markdown. - Parses with html5ever (spec-compliant HTML5 tree construction) into an arena DOM, collapses whitespace the way turndown does, then applies turndown's rule set plus turndown-plugin-gfm (tables, strikethrough, task lists) with a fixed rule per tag. No JS callbacks; options are enums/booleans only (headingStyle, hr, bulletListMarker, codeBlockStyle, fence, emDelimiter, strongDelimiter, br, tables, strikethrough, tasklists). - Deliberate differences from turndown, all in the reader's favour: header-less tables still become pipe tables (first row is the header), bare <pre> is a code block, headings and table cells are kept on one line, script/style/noscript/template are dropped, line-start escapes only apply at line start, and intraword underscores are not escaped. - Never throws on malformed input. Tree depth is capped at 512 during parsing (as browsers do) so hostile nesting stays linear, and the emitter has its own recursion backstop. - ~12-20 ms for 800 KB-1 MB real pages in a release build (7-15x faster than turndown + gfm on the same inputs), memory linear in input. Tests cover each rule, options, malformed and pathological input, round-tripping Bun.markdown.html output, and differential comparison against vendored turndown (curated snippets, a real docs page, and a seeded structural fuzzer).
Option properties can be getters that run arbitrary JS, including detaching the ArrayBuffer passed as input. Evaluate the options object first and only then borrow the input bytes, so no JS runs while the raw view is held. Adds a test with a getter that transfers the buffer.
…r's tree builder Profiling showed html5ever's own tokenizer was about half of the whole conversion: it pulls input one char at a time through a buffer queue and pushes output one char at a time into tendrils. Tree construction stays html5ever's; the tokenizer in front of it is replaced. - src/md/from_html/tokenizer.rs: a tokenizer over byte slices of the already-validated UTF-8 input that hands the tree builder zero-copy sub-tendrils for text and attribute values, interns names through a small per-call cache, and implements the HTML tokenizer states as html5ever does (character references incl. the attribute special case, CR/NUL preprocessing, comments, DOCTYPEs, CDATA in foreign content, RCDATA / RAWTEXT / script data with its escaped states / PLAINTEXT, every EOF case, and html5ever's post-</script> BOM quirk). It delivers the same token stream html5ever's tokenizer would; that was checked by recording both streams into the same tree builder over the html5lib tokenizer and tree-construction inputs (every prefix, every raw-text context, CR/NUL variants), 15 real pages plus 300k random windows into them, and several million generated documents. A Miri-only cargo test keeps a small version of that comparison in-tree (a native test binary cannot link highway). - dom.rs: Node shrunk from 128 to 96 bytes (tag hoisted out of the enum, QualName prefix dropped, template contents hung off the element, attrs in an UnsafeCell); tag names matched as static atoms. - whitespace.rs: subtree flags are accumulated during the whitespace walk instead of a second full traversal; whitespace-only text nodes are settled without allocating and rewrites use one scratch buffer. - emit.rs: rules that only wrap their content write straight into the parent buffer instead of building a string and copying it up; escaping hops between candidate bytes with the SIMD scanner. Line-start escapes are now decided against the real output position, so text following an inline sibling mid-line (`a<span>- b</span>`) is no longer backslashed. That is the only output change; everything else is byte-identical. The first 64 bytes are now checked inline with portable SIMD (u8x16, baseline SSE2/NEON, no dispatch) and only longer scans go to the kernel (now ~1%). Same for the whitespace pass's "first byte to rewrite" search and Markdown escaping. `#![feature(portable_simd)]` on bun_md; no `unsafe`. - tokenizer: a text run containing character references / CR / NUL is decoded into one buffer and emitted as one token instead of one token per piece (each of which was a trip through the tree builder and a possibly-copying text-node append); `<` that is not an end tag no longer splits raw-text runs. Byte-class table for name scanning, `&`/`<`/`>`/`"`/` ` matched before the entity-table walk, name-cache compare without memcmp. - dom: attributes live in a second typed_arena and the tokenizer reuses one Vec for every tag (no allocation per start tag); `Node` no longer needs an UnsafeCell and is 88 bytes. Robustness (all found with a new pathological-input suite; each was super-linear before and is linear now, covered by tests): - Mis-nested formatting tags (`<a><b><div><a>...`) make the adoption agency algorithm re-parent nodes toward the root while the parser's open-element stack keeps growing, so a cap keyed only on tree depth never engaged: 880 KB took 28 s. The limiter now also bounds the tree builder's handle count (stack + active formatting list). - A tag with N attributes was O(N^2) in the duplicate check (as in html5ever itself); a hash set takes over past 32 attributes. - Nested blockquotes/lists retained one scratch buffer per depth, making peak memory depth x output (1.9 GB for a 220 KB input); the pool is now a capped stack, peak is proportional to output. - Past the depth cap, dropped block tags leave a space so words do not run together; beyond the emitter's recursion cap block and `<br>` boundaries are kept. Behaviour fixes relative to the previous commit (found by diffing the original implementation against this one over generated documents): - an empty-content block inside an inline element produced four newlines instead of turndown's two (`<b>x<table></table></b>`); - `<template>` contents made their host non-blank (`<li><template>x` gave a stray `-`). Dropped subtrees (script/style/template/noscript/title) are now treated as absent for blankness as well, so an element holding nothing else produces nothing rather than an empty shell; - hoisted edge whitespace that begins with newlines (nested `<pre>` edge) could leave a parent's recorded offset inside a multi-byte character and panic in `js_trim_region`; the newlines now merge at the seam; - `</>` reports its parse error to the tree builder like html5ever's tokenizer does, which matters for the ignore-LF-after-`<pre>` rule. Verification: token streams identical to html5ever's tokenizer over the html5lib inputs (+prefixes, raw-text wrappers, CR/NUL variants: 193k cases), 15 real pages and 120k windows into them, 1.4M random and 400k grammar-generated documents (the latter also comparing final Markdown); Markdown byte-identical to the previous commit on the page corpus except for the fixes above; a debug-assertion + overflow-check build over the same fuzzers and a 60-input pathological suite (no panics, all linear); Miri (tree borrows) over the tokenizer-equivalence and scan tests; turndown differential corpus/fuzz results unchanged; 457 tests in md-from-html.test.ts, 1525 across test/js/bun/md.
…scape fixes Binary size: the tokenizer looked entity names up in html5ever's `NAMED_ENTITIES`, a phf map of all 2,231 names *and every prefix of every name* (9,854 entries, ~320 KB of .rodata). The Markdown parser already ships the 2,125 `;`-terminated names in a compact sorted table (`bun_md::entity`); the tokenizer now uses that plus a 636-byte list of the 106 legacy names allowed without `;`, with the same longest-match semantics (checked against html5ever over every entity name, prefix, truncation and follower in text and attribute contexts). Lookups got faster, not slower (one binary search instead of one hash probe per character). Net cost of the feature vs main on linux-x64 release is now ~230 KB (was ~490 KB): ~200 KB .text (html5ever's tree builder and the converter) and ~40 KB .rodata (tag-name atoms). Review follow-ups: - table output is linear: body rows are padded to the table width only up to 64 columns and colspan is clamped to 64, so one absurdly wide row no longer multiplies every other row; - a repeated `<body>`/`<html>` start tag no longer re-copies the element's attribute list (nothing reads those attributes; the merge is now a no-op), so `<body a><body b>...` cannot grow memory quadratically; - `<frameset>` nests, so it is no longer exempt from the depth cap; - code fences: an info string containing whitespace or a fence character is dropped, and closing-fence detection inside the code allows up to three leading spaces; - backslashes in link destinations and titles are escaped; `1) ` at a line start is escaped like `1. `; image alt text is not treated as a line start; a `\` before a dropped `<br>` in a one-line context keeps its escape; a code span whose content has backtick runs of every length below 64 gets a longer delimiter instead of a colliding one; - docs table example shows the literal output; the bench constructs the TurndownService once.
…follow-ups - The depth limiter exempted void / raw-text tag names from the cap on the grounds that they never deepen the tree, which only holds in HTML content: inside <svg>/<math> the same names are plain foreign elements that nest. The exemption now applies only while the adjusted current node is in the HTML namespace, so `<svg>` + `<wbr>` x N is capped too. - Buffer input may be a view over a SharedArrayBuffer that another thread is writing. `convert_utf8_bytes` copies the bytes into the parser's own tendril first and validates UTF-8 on that copy, so a concurrent writer can no longer invalidate the check behind `from_utf8_unchecked`. Input that grows past MAX_INPUT_LEN through U+FFFD substitution is rejected with the same RangeError as oversize input. - Numeric references to C1 controls use a local 32-entry windows-1252 table instead of `html5ever::data`. - A negative `<ol start>` clamps list markers at 0 (no Markdown spelling for negative markers). - Docs: keep the literal table output example out of Prettier's reach. - Tests: one TurndownService per file with cached reference output; the fuzz skip predicate matches only turndown's empty `~~` pair (it used to match any strikethrough and silently skip those seeds), blank `>` lines are normalized away, and the number of skipped seeds is bounded (19 of 250 today); SharedArrayBuffer input, negative start, and foreign-content nesting cases; a probe-boundary case for the SIMD scan helpers.
…s (mordant arg_named_like_other_param)
Bun.markdown.fromHTML now tokenizes with lol-html, the parser that already ships for HTMLRewriter, and drops the html5ever dependency together with the custom tokenizer and the tree-builder depth filter that sat in front of it. lol-html reports tags and text but does not construct a tree, so the structural part of HTML tree construction lives in from_html/tree.rs: implied end tags, scope-limited end-tag matching, table sections and foster parenting, void elements, foreign-content breakout, and the active formatting elements list (reconstruction and the adoption agency algorithm). Character references in text and attribute values are decoded by from_html/entities.rs using the existing entity table. The DOM keeps text and attribute strings in a byte arena; only the attributes the converter reads are retained. End tags are only visible for elements lol-html itself considers open, so a stray `</p>`/`</br>` is not seen and a mis-nested formatting element whose ancestor closed first is not reopened afterwards; the test file documents these cases next to what a browser does. Two small patches to the vendored lol-html remove quadratic behaviour on deeply "open" documents (long lists and tables with omitted end tags): end-tag handler dispatch now stops once no active handler remains, and the selector VM's element stack keeps per-name open counts so an unmatched end tag does not walk the whole stack. Output is byte-identical to the previous implementation on the real-page corpus used during development; release-build throughput is roughly half of the html5ever-based version and 12-18x turndown's. Binary size delta against main drops from +232 KB to +172 KB.
… review follow-ups - Reconstruction and the adoption agency draw from a clone budget proportional to the input, so `<li><b x=0>…<b x=500>` followed by many `<li>` cannot multiply the node count per token. - Formatting elements keep at most 32 attributes and the Noah's Ark comparison is linear. - A nested `<a>` removes exactly the `<a>` found since the last marker, never one outside an enclosing <object>/<td>. - Popping a cell, caption, <object>, <applet> or <marquee> by any route clears its marker, so markers cannot accumulate. - Edge whitespace hoisted out of inline elements is capped at 128 bytes; deep inline nesting around a long whitespace run no longer costs depth × run. - Tag names go through comptime_string_map!. - Tests for each of the above.
… two bools (mordant bare_bool_args)
…past the clone budget, number list items among kept siblings - When reconstruction stops (depth cap or clone budget), the entries it could not reopen are dropped from the formatting list; leaving them made every later token re-walk a closed list against the whole stack. - The adoption agency's budget check now sits after its clone-free exits, so a well-nested </a> still closes and unlists its element once the budget is spent instead of leaking an entry per link until formatting is disabled altogether. - <ol> numbering skips dropped siblings (<script>, <template>, …), which are absent everywhere else in the output.
…h HtmlRewriter Bumps lol-html to oven-sh/lol-html#3, which makes the transform-stream layer underneath HtmlRewriter public (`lol_html::transform`), and moves the converter onto it: a TransformController receives every start and end tag by name and requests the fully lexed token only for the few elements whose attributes are read. Selector matching, per-element handler closures and output serialization are no longer involved, and every end tag is visible, so stray `</p>`/`</br>` and mis-nested formatting (`<b>a<i>b</b>c</i>`) now come out as in a browser; the workaround that stopped reopening unreachable formatting elements is gone. Tag names are identified from lol-html's packed name hash with an integer match; text and attribute bytes go into a bump arena instead of typed_arena's per-byte extend. Start tags dropped at the depth cap are counted per tag so their end tags are dropped as well. The same lol-html change carries the end-tag dispatch fix that was a local patch here and a UTF-8 fast-path fix in its text decoder; the stack fix is already on the fork's bun branch. patches/lolhtml is removed. Release build, min of 30 runs: WHATWG parsing spec (769 KB) 7.9 ms, Node fs docs (1.08 MB) 10.6 ms, Wikipedia "Rust" (996 KB) 5.1 ms, github.com/oven-sh/bun 1.6 ms -- previously 13.1 / 19.7 / 8.6 / 3.2 ms through HtmlRewriter, and 5.8 / 8.1 / 4.4 / 1.5 ms with html5ever. turndown on the same run: 150 / 237 / 105 / 38 ms. Binary delta against main: +160 KB.
…ags by hash Bumps lol-html (oven-sh/lol-html#3) for two more transform-layer additions and uses them: - Text arrives through TokenCaptureFlags::RAW_TEXT as byte runs of the already-validated input instead of TextChunk tokens, so it is neither decoded through lol-html's streaming text decoder nor UTF-8-validated a second time, and is inserted into the tree straight away (only an unfinished `&…`/CR tail is held back) rather than staged in a String. Buffer inputs, which may be shared memory, are snapshotted first (convert_shared_utf8_bytes); string inputs are parsed in place. - Attributes are read with StartTag::for_each_raw_attribute, so nothing is allocated for attributes that are not kept, and the start-tag token is only requested where attributes are actually read (no longer for inline <code>). - Element identity is the tokenizer's packed name hash mapped to Tag by an integer match; only names outside the table (custom elements, unhashable foreign names) are ever decoded or stored. 🔴 The < escape decision only looks at the next byte of the same text node, so < at a text-node boundary followed by an unwrapped inline element re-forms a raw HTML tag: fromHTML("<p>press <<kbd>Enter</kbd>></p>") returns "press <Enter>", which any CommonMark renderer (including Bun.markdown.html) parses <Enter> as an inline HTML element instead of the literal text the source showed. …
Extended reasoning...
…Fix: treat < as needing an escape when at + 1 == bytes.len() as well (the follower is unknown), or have the text arm in process_children check out.as_bytes().last() == Some(&b'<') and back-insert a \\ before appending — the check must hold across every element that emits its children with no leading delimiter (span, kbd, mark, abbr, cite, sup/sub, custom elements).
text.rs:261-265: b'<' => at + 1 < bytes.len() && (bytes[at+1].is_ascii_alphabetic() || matches!(bytes[at+1], b'/'|b'!'|b'?')). When < is the final byte, at+1 < len is false → esc=false → emitted verbatim. emit.rs:72-99 processes siblings sequentially; a <kbd>/<span>/<mark> (not in any explicit arm, is_block()==false) falls to children_in_place with no wrapper, so its first text byte lands immediately after the < in out. escape_markdown_into for that text scans b"\\*[]_<"and never inspectsout's tail. Concrete input

Verification: normal — text.rs:261-265: b'<' => at + 1 < bytes.len() && (...) returns false when < is the last byte of the text node, so it is emitted verbatim. Trace of <p>press <<kbd>Enter</kbd>></p>: 1. <p> children processed sequentially (emit.rs:72-100). 2. Text node "press <": escape_markdown_into finds < at index 6; 7 < 7 is false → esc = false → out = "press <". 3.…

🟡 nit (optional): comment() does not reset skip_lf, so <pre><!-- c -->\nx</pre> drops the newline even though HTML §13.2.6.4.7 only ignores an LF that is the next token after <pre>/<listing> — a browser keeps \nx here, so the emitted code block loses its leading blank line. Fix: clear self.skip_lf in comment() (as start_tag/end_tag already do), so the LF-drop applies only when no other token intervenes.
Extended reasoning...
start_tag(Pre) sets self.skip_lf = true (line 847). comment() (lines 298-304) calls flush_text() — with no staged text this early-returns at line 248 without reaching insert_text, so skip_lf is never taken — then appends an Ignored node and returns without touching skip_lf. The following text_chunk("\nx", ..) reaches insert_text, which at line 270 does core::mem::take(&mut self.skip_lf) (still true) and strips the leading \n, leaving text "x". Per HTML §13.2.6.4.7 the LF is dropped only "if the next token is a U+000A LINE FEED character token"; when the next token is a comment, the LF is content. start_tag (line 725) and end_tag (line 989) both reset skip_lf; comment() is the one token handler that does not. <textarea> is unaffected (RCDATA parses <!-- as text). The consequence is a missing leading blank line in the fenced code block for a pattern that appears in generated/templated HTML (<pre><!-- prettier-ignore -->, license-header comments). No test exercises a comment immediately inside <pre>.
Verification: nit — mechanism holds exactly as described; edge-case spec divergence with minor output effect (a leading blank line inside a code block is lost when a comment sits between <pre> and the LF). Trace <pre><!-- c -->\nx</pre>: 1. start_tag(Pre, …) (tree.rs:723-725) does flush_text(); self.skip_lf = false;, reaches self.in_body = true at :803, then the Tag::Pre | Tag::Listing arm at…

🟡 nit (optional): setext headings emit a bare underline when the flattened content is empty, so fromHTML("<h2><br></h2>", {headingStyle:"setext"}) returns "-" (an empty bullet-list item) and <h1><br></h1> returns "=" (a paragraph) instead of a heading. Fix: when out.len() == start after push_one_line, fall back to the ATX form (or skip the underline) so an h1/h2 whose only children are output-less voids/meaningful-when-blank elements (<br>, <img> with no src, <iframe>, empty <table>, <input>) still round-trips as a heading. is_blank doesn't guard this because FLAG_HAS_VOID/FLAG_HAS_MEANINGFUL is set.
Extended reasoning...
Input <h2><br></h2> with {headingStyle:"setext"}. Whitespace pass: contribute_flags(h2, br) sets FLAG_HAS_VOID on h2 (dom.rs:486), so is_blank at emit.rs:648-654 returns false (f & FLAG_HAS_VOID != 0). process_children writes " \n" for the <br> (emit.rs:200-201). heading() at emit.rs:334: level=2<3, start=out.len(), push_one_line(out, " \n", false) calls js_trim (emit.rs:1029) → "", loop body never runs, nothing pushed. width = out[start..].chars().count().max(1) = 0.max(1) = 1. out.push('\n') then one -, then "\n\n". After post_process the document is "-". cmark-gfm parses - alone as <ul><li></li></ul> (CommonMark §5.2: a bullet marker followed by end-of-line is an empty list item). For <h1> the underline is =, parsed as a paragraph. The ATX branch (emit.rs:343-351) emits "## " for the same input, which CommonMark keeps as an empty <h2>, so only the non-default setext option is affected. Other reachable triggers: <h1><img></h1> (no src, emit.rs:209 emits nothing), <h1><iframe></iframe></h1>…
Verification: nit — the trace holds exactly as the candidate describes, but the trigger is a degenerate heading under a non-default option and the fallout is a stray empty bullet (or a literal = paragraph), not structural corruption of following content. Trace for Bun.markdown.fromHTML("<h2><br></h2>", {headingStyle:"setext"}): 1. contribute_flags (dom.rs:485-486) sets FLAG_HAS_VOID on the h2…

🟡 nit (optional): with {br:"\\"}, a <br> at the end of a heading or table cell leaves a stray literal \ in the output: fromHTML("<h1>x<br></h1>",{br:"\\"}) returns "# x\\" (renders as heading x\), and <td>x<br></td> gives | x\ |. js_trim(content) strips the trailing \n but not the \ marker before it, so the odd-run check at line 1044 (which only fires on an interior \n) never sees it — inconsistent with <h1>a<br>b</h1> → # a b where the marker is correctly dropped. Fix: after js_trim, strip a trailing hard-break marker (an odd-length trailing \ run) the same way the \n branch does.
Extended reasoning...
process_children(h1) on <h1>x<br></h1> with LineBreak::Backslash builds content = "x" + "\\" + "\n" (emit.rs:200-201: Tag::Br pushes opts.br()="\\" then '\n'). heading calls push_one_line(out, content, false) (emit.rs:351). At line 1029 js_trim(content) strips trailing JS whitespace: \n is whitespace (text.rs:32), \\ (0x5C) is not, so the trimmed content is "x\\". The byte loop at 1034-1067 never hits the b'\n' arm (no newline left), so the trailing-\-run pop at line 1044-1046 never runs; the two bytes are appended verbatim → out = "# x\\". post_process trims only whitespace. Output "# x\\" renders as <h1>x\\</h1>. Contrast <h1>a<br>b</h1> (test line 212): content "a\\\nb", js_trim leaves the interior \n, the \n arm pushes "a\\", counts 1 trailing \, pops it → "# a b". Same for table cells via push_one_line(rep, &cell_buf, true) at emit.rs:491. With the default br:" " the marker is two spaces, which js_trim also strips, so the default is unaffected. No test covers a trailing…
Verification: nit — the mechanism is exactly as described, and it is not a duplicate of the resolved :1001 comment (that fixed the interior-\n parity check; this is the trailing-\n case that never reaches it). Trace for Bun.markdown.fromHTML("<h1>x<br></h1>", { br: "\\" }): 1. opts.br() for LineBreak::Backslash returns "\\" (src/md/from_html/mod.rs:176-180). 2. Tag::Br in… | nit —…
What does this PR do?
Adds
Bun.markdown.fromHTML(html, options?), the inverse ofBun.markdown.html(): it takes an HTML document or fragment (a string or a UTF-8 buffer) and returns GitHub Flavored Markdown.HTMLRewriter, so no second HTML parser is added. It is driven through lol-html's transform-stream layer (lol_html::transform, made public in Expose the transform-stream layer; UTF-8 text fast path; O(active) end-tag dispatch lol-html#3, which this PR bumps to): every start and end tag is reported by name and identified from the tokenizer's packed name hash, text arrives as raw byte runs of the already-validated input, and the fully lexed start tag is requested only for the few elements whose attributes the converter reads (read as raw slices, nothing allocated for the rest). No selector matching, handler closures, text re-decoding or output serialization are involved.src/md/from_html/tree.rsimplements the structural part of HTML tree construction: implied end tags (<p>a<p>b,<li>,<dt>/<dd>, cells and rows), scope-limited end-tag matching, table sections and foster parenting, void elements, foreign-content breakout, and the active-formatting-elements list (reopening<b>across blocks, the adoption agency algorithm). Character references in text and attribute values are decoded with the Markdown parser's existing entity table.headingStyle,hr,bulletListMarker,codeBlockStyle,fence,emDelimiter,strongDelimiter,br,tables,strikethrough,tasklists.<pre>is a code block, headings and table cells stay on one line,script/style/noscript/templateare dropped with their contents,~~rather than~for strikethrough, one space after list markers, and line-start escapes only apply at line start.
