Fixes #17580

Problem

  • bun build fails on an import that ends in a query: error: Could not resolve: "./a.txt?raw". The runtime resolves the same import. This includes ?raw, which the runtime loads as text.
  • The runtime cuts the specifier at the first ? before it calls the resolver (normalize_specifier_for_resolution, src/jsc/VirtualMachine.rs:3464). The bundler passes the specifier as written.

Fix

  • When a specifier does not resolve as written, the bundler resolves it again without the ?query. The cut is at the first ?, as in the runtime, so a bundle has the file that bun run loads.
  • ?raw selects the text loader. A with { type } attribute wins over it. Both match the runtime.
  • Each query makes its own module, like in the runtime and esbuild. ./lib.js?raw and ./lib.js can be in one bundle. The module stores its query (InputFile::ignored_suffix). Its key in PathToSourceIndexMap is the file path plus the query. The chunk hash, --metafile and bun test --changed read the stored query.
  • Verified: test/bundler/bundler_loader.test.ts (8 new tests, all fail on 1.4.3-canary) and a bun run against bun build table in test/js/bun/resolve/import-query.test.ts.

Background

  • An import record is one import or require in a parsed file. resolve_import_records (src/bundler/bundle_v2.rs) resolves its specifier and makes a ParseTask for the file.
  • PathToSourceIndexMap maps a path to a module in the bundle. An import record finds its module there through path.text.
  • run_resolver resolves an import after the onResolve plugins that matched it returned nothing.
Notes

Repro:

echo 'export const x = 1;' > x.ts
echo 'hello' > a.txt
cat > main.ts <<'EOF'
import { x } from "./x.ts?v=1";
import txt from "./a.txt?raw";
console.log(x, txt.trim(), (await import("./x.ts?v=2")).x);
EOF
bun main.ts # 1 hello 1
bun build main.ts --target=bun --outdir=out # before: 3x "Could not resolve". after: builds, prints 1 hello 1

Changed after the self-review:

  • The first version also cut at #, like esbuild. That cut can pick another file: ./dir#1/a.txt?raw resolved a sibling dir.js. The runtime does not cut at #, and nobody asked for it, so it is gone. default/ImportWithHashParameter and default/ImportAbsPathWithQueryParameter (it has a #bar import) are todo again. #alias/a.txt?raw (package.json imports) now works, because the cut no longer looks at #.
  • The query was only a string inside the map key and inside record.path.text. It is now data on the module (ParseTask::ignored_suffix, InputFile::ignored_suffix), and these read it:
    • generate_isolated_hash: two dynamic imports of one file with different queries get different chunk names under --splitting (was the Multiple files share the same output path error). A module without a query hashes as before, so no output name changes.
    • --metafile: one input for each query (a.txt?one, a.txt?two), like esbuild. Was the same key more than once.
    • bun test --changed: one file can now be two sources. The filter seeds the search from every source of a changed file. A test that imports ./shared.ts?fresh is now selected when shared.ts changes (main misses it).

Scope:

  • The retry is in the bundler, not in the resolver. The runtime calls the same resolver and has its own rule, so it does not change.
  • The dev server does not change. Its incremental graph has one module for each file path, so it does not do the retry.
  • Imports from CSS (@import, url()) do not change. The resolver already ignores their suffix, and src/css/printer.rs puts it back on the printed URL. One asset for each file is the wanted result there.
  • In-memory files (FileMap) get the same retry: exact match first, then disk, then the same two without the query.
  • An external import keeps its query in the output (--external pkg with import "pkg?x" prints "pkg?x").
  • A server-side HTML import (import page from "./index.html?v=1" with --target=bun) is the exception to the identity rule. It is an entry point of the browser build with one output for the file, and the linker finds it through the path of the file. So the query is not part of its key.
  • For a package with main and module, the stored secondary path has the query too. import x from "pkg?a" plus require("pkg?a") share the main file. import y from "pkg?b" plus require("pkg") do not.
  • Under --watch, the retry runs after the dir cache bust, so the full specifier gets its second lookup first.
  • The display path (path.pretty) does not get the query. Source maps and watch mode keep the real file path.

Known limits:

  • The file loader gives ./img-<hash>.png for import url from "./img.png?v=2", without the query. The runtime also gives the path without the query, and with --target=bun the value is a file path. The asset is in the output list once for each query (same name, same bytes). Two identical files in two folders do the same today.
  • An onLoad plugin gets the file path without the query. The plugin API has no field for it.
  • An import with #hash does not resolve, in the bundler and in the runtime.
  • The import-attribute form of the same identity problem (./x.js with and without with { type: "text" }) is bundler: key modules by (path, loader) so one file under two import attributes is two modules #41834. It changes the same keys.

Related: #41938 (HTML attributes keep ?query#fragment), #38635 (HTML assets through files), #41834 (module key has the loader).

Tests:

  • test/bundler/bundler_loader.test.ts: bun/loader-raw-query, bun/loader-raw-query-and-module-of-one-file, bun/loader-raw-query-with-type-attribute, bun/import-query-suffix-module-identity, bun/import-query-suffix-dual-package, bun/import-query-suffix-splitting, bun/import-query-suffix-after-hash-in-path, bun/import-query-suffix-package-imports-alias.
  • test/js/bun/resolve/import-query.test.ts: one entry with 10 specifiers (?raw, ?raw&x=1, ?raw#fragment, ?v=1, a query with /, ./dir#1/a.txt?raw, #alias/...?raw, pkg?v=1, an absolute path). bun run and the bundle print the same values.
  • test/bundler/metafile.test.ts: metafile has one input for each query of an imported file.
  • test/cli/test/test-changed.test.ts: shared dependency imported with a query selects all importers.
  • test/bundler/html-import-manifest.test.ts: html-import/with-query-suffix.
  • test/bundler/bundler_plugin.test.ts: plugin/ResolveFallsThroughWithQuerySuffix (the run_resolver path).
  • test/bundler/bundler_files.test.ts: in-memory file imported with a query suffix.
  • test/bundler/esbuild/default.test.ts: removed todo from default/ImportWithQueryParameter.
  • test/js/bun/import-attributes/import-attributes.test.ts: enabled ?raw > bun build. bun build require stays off: a bundled require() of a text file returns the string, the runtime returns { default }. That difference does not depend on the query.
  • Also ran, with the debug build on Linux: esbuild/default, esbuild/loader, esbuild/splitting, esbuild/packagejson, bundler_edgecase, bundler_barrel, bundler_html, metafile, test-changed, import-attributes, bake/dev/{bundle,esm,plugins}.

no test proof · iteration 2 · platform-specific test(s) that do not run on this machine, deferring to CI, which covers all platforms: test/cli/test/test-changed.test.ts, test/bundler/metafile.test.ts, test/bundler/bundler_plugin.test.ts

An import like "./a.txt?raw" or "./x.ts?v=1" resolves in the runtime but
`bun build` failed with "Could not resolve". When a specifier does not
resolve as written, the bundler now resolves it again without the suffix,
like esbuild. "?raw" selects the text loader, like in the runtime. Imports
of one file with different suffixes are different modules.

Status

Reproduced on 1.4.3-canary.1+6a92015fc and on main (Linux x64):

echo 'export const x = 1;' > x.ts && echo 'hello' > a.txt
printf 'import { x } from "./x.ts?v=1";\nimport txt from "./a.txt?raw";\nconsole.log(x, txt.trim(), (await import("./x.ts?v=2")).x);\n' > main.ts
bun main.ts # 1 hello 1
bun build main.ts --target=bun --outdir=out # error: Could not resolve: "./x.ts?v=1" (and 2 more)

With this branch the build succeeds and bun out/main.js prints 1 hello 1. The eight new tests in test/bundler/bundler_loader.test.ts fail on the released binary with the same Could not resolve errors and pass with the debug build.

CI: every test that this PR adds or changes passes on all lanes (builds 114987 and 114994, same code). The red tests are test/cli/install/bun-patch.test.ts on Windows 2019 x64 (both builds) and test/js/bun/http/serve-pending-promise-abort-leak.test.ts on the ASAN lane (114987 only). This diff does not touch them. Both also go red on unrelated PRs (builds 114974, 114949, 114916, 114876). The PR is ready for a maintainer to review.

Walkthrough

The bundler now resolves query and hash suffixes. It maps ?raw imports to text loading, preserves suffix-specific module identities, serializes suffixes in metafiles, handles changed-file detection, and adds regression coverage.

… no suffix

The record keeps the interned text that path_with_pretty_initialized

…x after the dir cache bust

A server-side HTML import is an entry point that the linker finds through
the path of the file. A suffix on the specifier made a second key for it,
and the linker panicked. The suffix is now not part of its key.

Under --watch the retry without the suffix ran before the dir cache
bust, so a file name with ? or # in a stale directory lost to the
shorter name.

Preserve CSS suffix metadata across resolver fallback

When kind.is_from_css() resolution fails for style.css?one, resolver.rs retries with style.css and returns that result. bundle_v2.rs then sees Ok(r) before setting IgnoredSuffix, so its module key uses the unsuffixed path and its loader remains Loader::Css. Different suffixes can therefore share one module, and ?raw may not select Loader::Text. Keep the suffix metadata with the resolver result or defer this fallback to bundle_v2 so IgnoredSuffix is applied before module-key and loader selection.

On the CodeRabbit note about CSS imports (src/resolver/resolver.rs retries without the suffix for kind.is_from_css(), so the bundler never sees a suffix there): that is the behavior before this PR, and this PR leaves it as it is on purpose.

  • url(./font.woff?#iefix) and url(./font.woff) must stay one asset. A module for each suffix emits the same file more than once.
  • ?raw selects a loader for a JS import. It has no meaning on @import or url().

So CSS imports keep one module for each file, and the suffix stays ignored there.

Re-reviewed after 5c38ac7 and 4e09a19 — both issues I flagged are addressed, and I didn't find anything new. Given the scope (module-identity keying across the resolver, FileMap, secondary paths, and HTML entry points), a human look is still worthwhile.

What was reviewed:

  • HTML entry-point path: ignored_suffix is now reset before module_key is computed, so the Browser map key and the fake input file's path.text agree; covered by the new html-import/with-query-suffix test.
  • Retry ordering: main loop now busts the dir cache before stripping the suffix (bundle_v2.rs:6560→6592); in the lazy path the two branches are mutually exclusive on dev_server, so no ordering conflict there.
  • set_module_key is skipped only where source_index is assigned directly (bundle_v2.rs:6885), so the import record does not need path.text to find its module.
Extended reasoning...

Overview

This PR teaches bun build to resolve import specifiers ending in ?query or #hash by retrying resolution with the suffix stripped after ModuleNotFound, then keying PathToSourceIndexMap on path + suffix so distinct suffixes are distinct modules. It touches two resolve paths in src/bundler/bundle_v2.rs (run_resolution_for_lazy_dependency and the main import-record loop), the FileMap branch, secondary-path propagation for dual-package interop, and HTML entry-point handling. Seven test files gain coverage, including three un-skipped esbuild todo tests.

Security risks

None identified. The change is confined to build-time module resolution and cache keying; no network, auth, crypto, or untrusted-length arithmetic is involved. The suffix is a byte slice borrowed from the specifier and copied into the arena via alloc_slice_fill_default + copy_from_slice, with the interned_slice lifetime justified by the existing arena-outlives-pass invariant used throughout the file.

Level of scrutiny

High. Module-identity keying is exactly the "cache keys cover every input that shapes the output" class REVIEW.md calls out, and the change threads a new key through several sibling sites (FileMap vs resolver, primary vs secondary path, resolve_queue vs path_to_source_index_map, both resolve entry points). My earlier review flagged two concrete issues in that threading; both were fixed in follow-up commits and re-verified here against the current code. The remaining known limits (metafile duplicate keys, --splitting same-hash chunks, file loader duplicate emits) are disclosed in the PR description and are pre-existing behaviors for identical-content inputs.

Other factors

Test coverage is broad for the new behavior (raw query, per-suffix identity, type-attribute precedence, dual-package secondary path, plugin fall-through, in-memory FileMap, HTML manifest with suffix, three esbuild parity tests). The dev-server exclusion is deliberate and commented. I'm deferring rather than approving because the module-key threading is subtle enough that a maintainer familiar with LinkerContext/scan_for_secondary_paths should confirm no other consumer reads path.text where set_module_key is now skipped, and should weigh the disclosed --splitting/metafile limits.

The cut is now the one the runtime makes, so a bundle has the file that
bun run loads. The cut at # could pick another file (./dir#1/a.txt?raw
resolved ./dir.js) and is gone. Two esbuild ports that need it are todo
again.

The module keeps its query in InputFile::ignored_suffix. The chunk hash,
the metafile and bun test --changed read it: two dynamic imports of one
file with different queries get different chunk names under --splitting,
the metafile has one input for each query, and --changed selects the
importers of every source of a changed file.

A note for the rebase, from #44957.

#44957 makes the runtime report a builtin's name that has a ?query (path?v=2, fs/promises?x, ws?x) as module-not-found, as Node does. On main the runtime cuts the query and resolves path as a package.

By the diff of this PR, the retry cuts the query from any specifier that did not resolve, a bare one too. With --target=bun or --target=node, path then resolves as a builtin, so bun build would accept import "path?v=2", which bun run rejects after #44957.

The PR that lands second needs the same test before the retry (HardcodedModule::Alias::has on the name that the cut leaves), and a path?v=2 row in the bun run against bun build table of test/js/bun/resolve/import-query.test.ts.

#46511 adds a percent-decoded retry to the ModuleNotFound arm of resolve_import_records and of run_resolver, the arms that this PR also extends. Git merges the two without a conflict there, so the order of the two retries needs a check by hand.

For url("./big%20asset.bin?v=2#frag") in a stylesheet, the decoded path has to be tried with the whole suffix removed, and the file has to stay one module. The css/URLPercentEncoded* tests in #46511 assert the metafile inputs and the printed suffix for this case. The second of the two PRs to land has to run them.
