Problem

  • Four natives use putDirect() on an unchecked this. A frozen object gains a property, a Proxy sees no trap, a WebAssembly GC reference aborts: release panic(main thread): abort() called, debug ASSERTION FAILED: WebAssemblyGCStructure should not do transition.
  • Sites: setProcessPpid, jsRequireCacheSetter, jsRequireExtensionsSetter, JSStringDecoderConstructor::call, jsEventEmitterCastFast.

Fix

  • process.ppid becomes a setterless CustomValue, so JSC's own [[Set]] assigns.
  • The require setters, StringDecoder.call(obj) and the assigning emitter methods call Bun::defineOwnDataProperty(): a direct store for a plain extensible object, else defineOwnProperty(). The reading emitter methods store nothing.
  • Verified: tests in 5 files (Notes). 35 fail without the fix.
  • Self-reviewed: 4 changes asked for, 4 made (Notes).

Background

  • putDirect() adds a property by Structure transition, with no hook. defineOwnProperty() asks the object.
  • A CustomAccessor setter gets the receiver. A setterless CustomValue assigns like a data property.
  • A foreign this is not a native emitter. It keeps its listeners in one, at this._events.
  • Considered CustomValue for require.cache too: its getter gets the holder, and needs the receiver to find a Bun.ModuleGraph (Bun.ModuleGraph: a context per graph for timers and I/O, per-graph CommonJS #42590).

Downsides

  • The ppid descriptor loses get and set. After Object.seal(process) or Object.freeze(process), process.ppid no longer follows a reparent.
  • require.cache = x on a frozen require throws in sloppy mode too. process.emit("error", e) after process.removeAllListeners() now reports e.
  • Instructions per call: require.cache = x 166 to 532, StringDecoder.call(this) 486 to 521, emitter methods on a foreign this +6 to +26, of process -22 to -33. Binary text: +3,584 bytes.
Notes

Repro on 1.4.3-canary.1 and on main e375701, one line per site (bun x.cjs). Each line prints false and a new key: the frozen object is changed.

const show = (name, f) => { const o = Object.freeze({}); try { f(o); } catch (e) { console.log(name, e.name); } console.log(name, Object.isFrozen(o), Reflect.ownKeys(o)); };
show("ppid", o => Object.getOwnPropertyDescriptor(process, "ppid").set.call(o, 7));
show("StringDecoder", o => require("string_decoder").StringDecoder.call(o, "utf8"));
show("listenerCount", o => process.listenerCount.call(o, "x"));
show("on", o => process.on.call(o, "x", () => {}));
for (const k of ["cache", "extensions"]) show(k, o => Object.getOwnPropertyDescriptor(Object.getPrototypeOf(require), k).set.call(o, 1));

The abort: pass a WebAssembly GC reference as the receiver of any of the calls above, or as the receiver of Reflect.set(process, "ppid", 7, ref).

const bytes = new Uint8Array([0,0x61,0x73,0x6d,1,0,0,0, 1,10,2, 0x5f,1,0x7f,1, 0x60,0,1,0x63,0, 3,2,1,1, 7,6,1,2,0x6d,0x6b,0,0, 10,7,1,5,0,0xfb,1,0,0x0b]);
const ref = new WebAssembly.Instance(new WebAssembly.Module(bytes)).exports.mk(); // (struct (field (mut i32)))
process.on.call(ref, "x", () => {}); // main: abort, exit code 134. After: TypeError

After this change, compared with Node.js v26.3.0:

call Node.js after
Object.getOwnPropertyDescriptor(process, "ppid") { value, writable, enumerable, configurable } same (was { get, set })
Object.create(process).ppid = 1 own data property on the receiver same as before
the same on a frozen receiver TypeError in strict mode, silent in sloppy mode same
Reflect.set(process, "ppid", 1, frozen) false false
Reflect.set(process, "ppid", 1, proxy) defineProperty trap defineProperty trap
Object.seal(process); process.ppid = 1 the value is stored, process stays sealed same (before: process was not sealed after it)
Object.freeze(process); process.ppid = 1 rejected same (before: the value was stored and process was not frozen after it)
Object.seal(process) or Object.freeze(process), then a reparent process.ppid follows the reparent the value of the moment of the lock (before: follows)
Object.defineProperty(process, "ppid", { enumerable: false }), then a reparent the old value the old value (before: follows)
require.cache = x the value is stored on that require function same as before
the same on a frozen require TypeError in strict mode, silent in sloppy mode TypeError in the two modes, and from Reflect.set
StringDecoder.call(frozen), on.call(frozen, ...) TypeError TypeError
listenerCount.call(frozen, "x") 0, no write 0, no write
a WebAssembly GC reference as the receiver TypeError: WebAssembly objects are opaque TypeError from the sites that define, false from Reflect.set(process, "ppid", ...), 0 from listenerCount

require.cache and require.extensions are own data properties of each require function in Node.js. Here they are accessors on the shared prototype of the require functions, and this change keeps their descriptors. jsRequireCacheGetter needs the receiver: for a require function of a Bun.ModuleGraph it returns the cache of that graph (test/js/bun/module-graph/). The getter of a CustomValue gets the object that holds the property, which is the shared prototype. A custom setter cannot see if the assignment is in strict mode, so the two setters throw in the two modes. extensions stays an accessor too, so that the two properties keep one shape.

The shape of ppid. The ppid getter does not read its receiver, so ppid can be a CustomValue. That shape equals Node.js on the descriptor, on each assignment row above and in util.inspect(process) (main prints ppid: [Getter/Setter]). Its cost is the read after Object.seal(process) or Object.freeze(process): JSC redefines each property, and for a CustomValue it stores the value that the getter gave at that moment. test/regression/issue/29169.test.ts has a test.todo for each of the two. The other shape is the accessor of main with a setter that calls Bun::defineOwnDataProperty(), as for require.cache. It keeps the read live and keeps the { get, set } descriptor, and it throws where Node.js is silent or returns false. It is a change of one table row and one setter, if a maintainer prefers it.

Unhandled "error" events. EventEmitter::fireEventListeners reported an "error" event with no listener only while the emitter held a receiver. The emitter holds the receiver of the last call that changed it, weakly, and removeAllListeners() clears it. So process.removeAllListeners(); process.emit("error", e) dropped e: exit code 0 and nothing printed. With the Proxy receivers of this PR the same happened after a collection of the Proxy that made the emitter, where main reports e. The guard was there to read the global object from the receiver. The report now always happens. Node.js throws e from emit(). Here e goes to the uncaught exception path, as before this PR.

Answers that differ from Node.js. The native emitter methods on a receiver that is not an emitter give these answers before and after this PR. Each test that pins one says so.

  • A method that assigns defines only _events. Node.js defines _events and _eventsCount, and _maxListeners for setMaxListeners.
  • once and prependOnceListener work on a receiver with no on method. Node.js throws a TypeError.
  • listenerCount throws for a primitive receiver. Node.js returns 0.
  • An object that inherits from process gets its own listeners. In Node.js it shares the listeners of process.
  • An "error" event with no listener is reported as uncaught. In Node.js emit() throws it.

Cost per call. Instructions inside the host function, from its first instruction to its return, on release builds of main e375701 and of this branch. The count comes from ptrace(PTRACE_SINGLESTEP), because perf and valgrind are not available on the machine. Each row is calls 40 to 49 of a loop. The count is the same for the 10 calls, apart from the rows marked "lowest", where the call allocates. The row for Object.create(process) changes by 1 from run to run.

call main this PR
process.listenerCount("x") 120 87
process.emit("x", 1), no listener 224 200
process.emit("x", 1), one listener 610 588
process.on("x", f) 1,738 1,705
StringDecoder.call(this, "utf8"), this is a new plain object 486 521
listenerCount.call(o, "x"), o has an emitter in _events 314 320
emit("x", 1) on Object.create(process), one listener 775 790
on.call({}, "x", f), a new object for each call (lowest) 2,304 2,330
listenerCount.call(o, "x"), o has no _events 279 276
emit.call(o, "x", 1), o has no _events 382 286
listenerCount.call({}, "x"), a new object for each call (lowest on main) 906 276
require.cache = x, a new require function for each call 166 532
  • The methods of process are cheaper because IDLOperation<JSEventEmitter>::call tests for a native emitter inline. On main each call goes through the out-of-line jsEventEmitterCastFast() first.
  • The 35 instructions of StringDecoder.call(this) are the two tests before the direct store: a plain object, extensible, no own property of that name. The first push called defineOwnProperty() for every receiver.
  • require.cache = x runs the setter one time for each require function, because the own property that it defines hides the accessor. A require function is not a plain object, so the setter calls JSFunction::defineOwnProperty().
  • Size: size bun-profile gives 80,852,162 and 80,855,746 bytes of text. Data and bss are equal. The stripped binary grows by 4,096 bytes, one page.
  • Nothing is added per process. ppid stays a row of processObjectTable, so Object.keys(process) keeps its order and the process object does no work for ppid when it is created. The table generator names a setter for each row that is not ReadOnly, so setProcessPpid is now a null constant.

Self-review. The review of the first push asked for the CustomValue shape and found two bugs in the code of that push. Later pushes removed the cost that the first two added for receivers that never hit the bug.

  • A custom setter cannot see if the assignment is in strict mode. With createDataProperty() in the ppid setter, a frozen receiver threw in sloppy mode too, Reflect.set ended in an exception, and Object.seal(process); process.ppid = 1 threw. JSC's own [[Set]] has none of these. CustomValue fits ppid only: the require.cache getter needs the receiver (above).
  • A reading method of the second push ran on a new emitter that it did not store. Nothing referenced that emitter during the call, and a collection inside the event name conversion freed it. A reading method now gets no emitter for such a this and answers as for no listeners: false, 0, [], the default of 10, this.
  • process.emit.call(ref, "error", e) reported the unhandled error on thisObject->globalObject(), which is null for a WebAssembly GC reference. The report now goes to the global object of the emitter's context, or of the method when this has no emitter. An object from a node:vm context now reaches process.on("uncaughtException"), as in Node.js. On main the error is printed and the exit code is 1.
  • About scope, not taken here: to fold fs.Stats: make the date accessors define the property like Object.defineProperty #42518 into this PR (it is in review on its own), and the process.env setters below.
  • The review of the fourth push (the accessors of require.cache and require.extensions) asked for four changes. All are made: the report of an unhandled "error", the ppid line under Downsides with its test.todo, the list of the sites that this PR leaves, and a note at each emitter test that pins an answer that Node.js does not give. The review weighed the two shapes of ppid and kept the CustomValue.
  • The same review named three follow-ups that are not in this PR: to forward the emitter methods for a receiver that is not a native emitter to node:events, an own cache property on each require function of a Bun.ModuleGraph, and a receiver sweep of all natives.

Emitter lifetime on main. After process.on.call(o, "x", f), the call process.listenerCount.call(o, { toString() { delete o._events; Bun.gc(true); return "x" } }) reads a freed emitter. A release build with ASAN and Malloc=1 reports heap-use-after-free. Without Malloc=1 the count is 0, not 1. this._events is the only reference to the emitter and the method body keeps only wrapped(). IDLOperation<JSEventEmitter>::call now holds the emitter with EnsureStillAliveScope. The test for it fails before the fix on a release build with ASAN. On a debug build it passes with and without the fix.

Other notes:

  • A descriptor can no longer tell a live ppid from a cached one, which is what test/regression/issue/29169.test.ts checked. It now reparents a process and waits for process.ppid to change. The first process exits only after the second one reports that it read ppid, and the second one polls, so nothing depends on timing. The test removes BUN_FEATURE_FLAG_NO_ORPHANS from the environment of the two processes, because with it a process kills its descendants on exit.
  • StringDecoder: the encoding property keeps its current attributes (not enumerable). node:string_decoder: make encoding an enumerable own data property #34609 changes that attribute and touches the same line. The private decoder slot is defined after encoding, in the order of the Node.js constructor. A Proxy ignores private names, so write on a Proxy receiver still throws the invalid-this error, as before.
  • A Proxy receiver of the EventEmitter methods now works. Before, _events landed on the proxy cell, the next call did not find it through [[Get]], and each call made a new emitter.
  • A reading method no longer replaces a _events of the user that is not a native emitter. A method that assigns still does, as on main.
  • listenerCount with a primitive this named listeners in its ERR_INVALID_THIS message. It now names listenerCount.
  • The unused Process_defaultSetter has the same putDirect() body and is deleted. Remove dead code from the JSC bindings, headers.h, the console builtin, and bun_jsc #40232 deletes it too.
  • node:string_decoder: construct subclasses of StringDecoder #42582 (merged) split the StringDecoder constructor into call and construct. This branch is rebased on it.
  • Sites of the same class that this PR leaves:
  • Receivers checked on the debug, release and release ASAN builds of this branch, each against 16 entry points (Reflect.set of ppid, cache and extensions, the cache and extensions setter functions, StringDecoder, on, once, setMaxListeners, listenerCount, listeners, eventNames, getMaxListeners, emit, removeListener, removeAllListeners): plain object, frozen, sealed, non-extensible, array, frozen array, function, frozen function, bound function, class, Date, frozen Map, typed array, non-extensible typed array, frozen Headers, Proxy, revoked Proxy, WebAssembly GC reference, null-prototype object, Error, RegExp, arguments, String object, Symbol object, Promise, generator, Object.create(process) and the same frozen, an object with a non-configurable _events accessor, an object with a read-only encoding, an object from a node:vm context and the same frozen. No abort, no sanitizer report, no locked object changed. The three builds give the same results, also with BUN_JSC_validateExceptionChecks=1 on the debug build.
  • Tests that fail without the fix, on a release build of main: test/js/node/events/event-emitter.test.ts 20, test/js/node/module/node-module-module.test.js 6, test/js/node/process/process.test.js 5, test/js/node/string_decoder/string-decoder.test.js 3, test/regression/issue/29169.test.ts 1. On a release ASAN build the emitter lifetime test fails too.
  • Suites run with the debug build: the five test files above in full, process-on.test.ts, process-signal-listener-count.test.ts, process-nexttick.test.js, call-constructor.test.js, require-extensions.test.ts, and in test/js/node/test/parallel/: test-process-ppid.js, test-process-prototype.js, test-process-emit.js, test-process-emitwarning.js, test-process-env-delete.js, test-process-uncaught-exception-monitor.js, test-process-exception-capture.js, test-process-beforeexit.js, test-process-warning.js, test-process-exit.js, test-process-next-tick.js, test-process-kill-pid.js, test-event-emitter-errors.js, test-event-emitter-subclass.js, test-event-emitter-listeners.js, test-event-emitter-remove-listeners.js, test-event-emitter-remove-all-listeners.js, test-events-once.js, test-require-cache.js, test-module-cache.js, test-require-dot.js, test-require-resolve.js, test-require-extensions-main.js, test-require-extension-over-directory.js, test-string-decoder.js, test-string-decoder-end.js, test-string-decoder-fuzz.js. The new tests also pass with BUN_JSC_validateExceptionChecks=1 and on the release and release ASAN builds of this branch. The 8 files of test/js/bun/module-graph/ pass on the release build.
  • With a debug build on the machine, process-on.test.ts (should work inside --compile) and some tests of process.test.js run out of time, with and without this change. They pass with the release builds.

Status

Reproduced on bun 1.4.3-canary.1 and on main e375701 (linux x64) with one script per site:

  • Object.getOwnPropertyDescriptor(process, "ppid").set.call(Object.freeze({}), 7)
  • require("string_decoder").StringDecoder.call(Object.freeze({}), "utf8")
  • process.listenerCount.call(Object.freeze({}), "x")
  • Object.getOwnPropertyDescriptor(Object.getPrototypeOf(require), "cache").set.call(Object.freeze({}), 1) (and "extensions")

Each call adds a property to the frozen object. With a WebAssembly GC reference as the receiver, each call ends in panic(main thread): abort() called (exit code 134).

With this change ppid has no setter function, and Reflect.set(process, "ppid", 7, frozen) returns false. The require.cache and require.extensions setters, StringDecoder.call(frozen) and process.on.call(frozen, ...) throw a TypeError. listenerCount returns 0, writes nothing and builds no emitter. 35 of the new tests fail on a release build of main. All pass on the debug, release and release ASAN builds of this branch.

require.cache and require.extensions stay accessors. The cache getter needs the receiver to return the cache of a Bun.ModuleGraph. The description has the instruction counts per call, the size, and the sites of the same class that this PR leaves.

Walkthrough

Bindings for process.ppid, require.cache, require.extensions, StringDecoder, and EventEmitter now use receiver property-definition behavior. EventEmitter methods select whether to create _events and handle calls without emitter state. Tests cover restricted, inherited, proxied, primitive, and WebAssembly GC receivers.

Code review found no issues

No high-confidence issues detected in this change.

Four natives wrote a property onto an unchecked `this` with putDirect,
which skips the receiver's [[DefineOwnProperty]]: a frozen object gained
the property, a Proxy saw no trap, and a WebAssembly GC reference
aborted the process.

- process.ppid setter
- StringDecoder called as a function with an object receiver
- the native EventEmitter prototype (process's), which stored a new
  _events from every method
- the require.cache and require.extensions setters

Each now calls createDataProperty / defineOwnProperty with shouldThrow.
The EventEmitter methods that only read this._events in Node
(listenerCount, emit, removeListener, ...) no longer store one.
… properties

To JS they are now writable data properties, as in Node. An assignment
goes through JSC's ordinary [[Set]], which defines the value on the
receiver with the right strict-mode behavior. The three native setters,
and the unused Process_defaultSetter with the same body, are deleted.

Also:
- keep the emitter of a reading EventEmitter method alive across the
  call. Nothing else references it, and the event name conversion can
  run user code that collects it.
- report an unhandled 'error' event on the global object of the
  emitter's context, not of the receiver. A WebAssembly GC reference
  has no realm.
- replace the descriptor check in 29169.test.ts with a reparent test.
  A descriptor no longer tells a live value from a cached one.
…vers the direct store

A reading method (emit, listenerCount, listeners, eventNames,
getMaxListeners, removeListener, removeAllListeners) on a `this` that
has no emitter in `this._events` now answers as for an emitter with no
listeners. It built an emitter for each call.

Bun::defineOwnDataProperty() defines a property on an object that JS
passed in. A plain extensible object with no such own property takes
putDirect(), which is what its [[DefineOwnProperty]] does. Every other
object goes through its method table. StringDecoder.call(obj) and the
emitter methods that store `_events` use it.

IDLOperation<JSEventEmitter>::call tests for a native emitter inline,
so a method of process makes no out-of-line call for its `this`.

process.ppid is a row of processObjectTable again, as a CustomValue
with no setter. It keeps its place in Object.keys(process), and the
process object does no work for it when it is created.

The getter of require.cache finds the Bun.ModuleGraph of the require
function it is read from. JSC gives the getter of a CustomValue the
holder of the property, which is the prototype that every require
function shares, so each graph saw the cache of the host.

The two properties are CustomAccessor again. Their setters define the
assigned value through Bun::defineOwnDataProperty().

The fix for the error event with no listener in e87ef41 covers the report that I worked on in a separate branch. I do not open a second PR for it.

Branch: robobun/b4cb32dc/report-unhandled-process-error. One commit, 2 files: the same removal of the m_thisObject guard in fireEventListeners, and 18 subprocess cases in test/js/node/events/event-emitter.test.ts. A release build of c909344 passes all 18. main 9390b39 fails 14.

Three of the cases fail on main and have no test in this PR:

  1. process.emit("error", new Error("boom")) as the only statement, with --no-warnings or NODE_NO_WARNINGS=1. On main nothing is printed and the exit code is 0. Without the default warning listener, nothing sets m_thisObject at startup.
  2. A receiver from a node:vm context that has an emitter of its own:
    process.on("uncaughtException", e => console.log("caught", e.message));
    const receiver = require("node:vm").runInNewContext("({})");
    process.on.call(receiver, "x", () => {});
    process.emit.call(receiver, "error", new Error("boom"));
    main prints the error and exits with code 1. The listener does not run. This PR and Node.js v26.3.0 print caught boom.
  3. The script of case 2 inside a worker_threads Worker. main ends with panic: Segmentation fault at address 0x0 (WebWorker__dispatchError, Worker.cpp:207). With this PR the listener of the Worker runs and the Worker exits with code 0.

Cases 2 and 3 check which global object gets the report.

The branch also removes m_thisObject.clear() from removeAllListeners(). With the guard gone, listener calls are the only reader of m_thisObject, and each call that adds a listener sets it again.

Instruction counts of fireEventListeners

Release builds on linux x64, gdb stepi, BUN_JSC_useJIT=0. The counts are the instructions that fireEventListeners executes itself.

main 9390b39 this PR c909344 the branch (report in a NEVER_INLINE helper)
emit, no listener 48 49 46
emit, one listener 170 173 171
size of the function 1,490 B 1,429 B 1,269 B, helper 176 B

The number of conditional branches is the same in the three builds: 4 with no listener, 26 with one listener. The source of these two paths does not change. The compiler assigns the registers again for the whole function.

### What does this PR do?

Hardening. This collects the open pull requests that fix a crash in Bun
into one change, and fixes about 20 more crashes that had no pull
request.

"Crash" here means a segfault, a Rust panic, an abort, a failed
assertion, memory corruption that a sanitizer reports, a native stack
overflow, or an exception that ends the process and that the program
can't catch. With this PR those cases throw a normal error, print a
normal CLI error and exit 1, or just work.

306 pull requests are included: 227 whole, and 79 cut down to the crash
fix where the rest was a refactor, a feature or a behavior change. Each
one was checked against current `main` first. 45 more turned out to be
fixed already, and 17 were duplicates. The full list is at the bottom.

#### Crashes you could hit in normal use

- **`bun build` with macros and a `.env` file crashed at random.** In a
repro with many macro modules, more than a third of the builds crashed.
Now 3,000 of 3,000 produce the right bundle. (#45960)
- **`bun run` and `bunx` aborted if a signal arrived while the child was
being spawned.** (#38926, #45965)
- **`bun build --compile ./index.js ./public/*` panicked** if an
embedded file's name wasn't valid UTF-8.
- **A truncated or corrupted compiled executable** died with SIGBUS or a
panic at startup. It now prints an error. (#31787, #38251, #41360)
- **Dev server:** several `Option::unwrap()` panics after a failed or
deleted import (#38046, #44744, #44746), a segfault when an `onLoad`
plugin throws while another bundle is queued, a request that hung and
then panicked with `bundle active`, and `server.stop()` that never
resolved after a client aborted a waiting request.
- **`Bun.serve`:** `server.fetch(url, { headers: new Headers() })`
followed by a GC segfaulted (#40888). Routes were used after free after
`server.reload()` with `tls.serverName` (#38636).
- **`text()` and `json()` on a stream of string chunks** could abort the
process, a regression in 1.4.0. (#44269)
- **`Bun.Transpiler` with `exports.eliminate` or `exports.replace`**
aborted on `export default 1` and on most re-export clauses. (#44137)
- **A decorated `declare` field in a class expression** with
`experimentalDecorators` panicked. (#38095)
- **YAML and JSON5 files with a key that isn't a string** panicked with
`--no-bundle` and in `Bun.Transpiler`. (#41827)
- **`Bun.FileSystemRouter`:** reading `.params` segfaulted when a
rejected route candidate left its parameters behind. (#39290, #39291)
- **Native addons that call `uv_async_*`, `uv_timer_*`, `uv_idle_*`,
`uv_prepare_*`, `uv_check_*`, `uv_queue_work` or `uv_cwd`** aborted with
"unsupported uv function" on Linux and macOS. They're implemented now.
(#36609, #39652, #39892)
- **`--watch` and `--hot`** panicked when the system was out of inotify
instances or file descriptors, or when the reload `exec` failed. They
print an error now. (#39629, #39975, #44837)
- **Paths longer than the path buffer** panicked in `bun install`, the
resolver, the bundler, `--compile`, `tsconfig.json` `paths` and
`baseUrl`, `package.json` `main` and `sideEffects`, `bun run --filter`,
`bun pm diff`, source maps and snapshots. They're ordinary errors now,
or they work. (#36340, #37529, #39104, #39650, #43067)
- **A Worker that creates a `ShadowRealm` and imports
`node:worker_threads` in it** segfaulted.
- **`structuredClone` or `postMessage` of an X25519 key** gave an object
that aborted the process when read. (#45624)
- **`node:stream` web adapters and `node:http2`** could end the process
with an exception that no handler could catch. (#45076, #45975)
- **Windows:** a watcher panic in a burst of file changes (#44344), a
segfault after the machine resumes from sleep (#33015), crashes in the
shell's pipe reader (#39638, #43606), and addons that import from
`node.exe` without the delay-load hook (#35618).

Most of the rest needs unusual input: strings near the 2 GiB limit,
buffers that another thread or a getter resizes or detaches in the
middle of a call, `worker.terminate()` at a bad moment, running out of
memory or file descriptors, very deep nesting, or hostile arguments to
`bun:ffi`, `node:vm` and `bun:sqlite`.

#### Behavior changes

Things that didn't crash before and behave differently now:

- `new` on native functions that aren't constructors throws a
`TypeError`, as in Node: `util.types.*`, `buffer.isAscii`, `isUtf8`,
`transcode`, `resolveObjectURL`, `bun:jsc` exports, `cc()` symbols. It
used to return the call's result. They also stop printing as `[class
hostname]`. (#34575)
- `` $`cmd` `` throws `ERR_INVALID_ARG_VALUE` if an environment
variable's name or value contains a NUL byte. It used to cut the value
at the NUL. (#44981)
- `cc()` functions throw a `TypeError` for arguments that used to reach
C as garbage, and `read.*(ptr, NaN)` throws. (#37989, #38057, #40773)
- As PID 1, `bun` exits with 128 + the signal number on Ctrl+C or
`docker stop`. (#38877)
- A `NODE_MODULE` addon that's already loaded by the main thread throws
`ERR_DLOPEN_FAILED` when a live Worker loads it too, as in Node.
(#39968)
- An exception from a `node:vm` context reaches `uncaughtException`
handlers. (#39992) `vm.constants.DONT_CONTEXTIFY` returns the real
global proxy. (#34623)
- `createPrivateKey` rejects an EC JWK whose private value doesn't match
its public point. (#33752)
- `@dec static {}` is a syntax error, as in TypeScript and esbuild.
(#44883)
- `clearTimeout` ignores 0 and negative ids, and timer ids no longer
wrap. (#44771)
- HEAD for a `Response` whose body is an S3-backed `Blob` reports the
length that GET sends. (#44734)
- `bun:sqlite` and `node:sqlite`: if `iterate()` left a write unfinished
on a connection that has a hook, a user function or an authorizer, the
write is finished on the connection's next call instead of during
garbage collection. If the database is gone too, it's rolled back.
- `bun test --bail` runs exit listeners and closes SQLite databases.
(#39010)
- Dev server: a request for a client script waits while a bundle is in
flight (#42733), query strings reach framework routes (#33232), and a
request gets a 500 instead of hanging when plugins fail (#36812).

#### File formats

- `.jsc` bytecode files get a 24-byte footer so they can be verified
before decoding. Files from an older Bun are ignored and the source is
parsed instead. (#39396)
- `node:vm` `cachedData` gets an 8-byte checksum. A blob from an older
Bun is rejected, which the API allows. (#32839)
- The built-in modules section of a compiled executable changes from
format 1 to 2 and carries an engine stamp. (#44907)

#### Performance

Measured in instructions per operation on release builds of this branch
and its base, with an A/A run for the noise floor (0.0 to 0.2 %).

No change: `Bun.serve`, `node:http`, WebSocket echo and publish, `bun
build` of 3,807 modules, `bun run` with 2,000 imports, `readdir` /
`Glob` / `fs.cp` over 23,689 entries, startup and RSS. The binary grows
by 176 KB (0.17 %).

| Faster | Instructions |
| --- | --- |
| WebSocket echo of a 1 MB non-ASCII text message | −72 % |
| `Bun.inspect` of a large non-ASCII string | −39 % |
| `Bun.markdown.html` on large non-ASCII input | −33 % |
| `` $`cmd` `` with 300 environment variables | −6 % |
| `fs.readSync` | −5 % |
| `TextEncoder.encodeInto`, short ASCII strings | −4 % |
| async `crypto.pbkdf2`, 16-byte inputs | −17 % |

| Slower | Instructions | Why |
| --- | --- | --- |
| `cc()` calls | +5 to +51 per call | Argument count and type checks,
and a check for `close()` (#37989, #38057, #43802, #44921). `dlopen()`
calls don't change |
| `process.env.X = v` | 38 → 593 per write | Writes aren't cached. Reads
don't change (#38871) |
| async `crypto.pbkdf2`, inputs of 1 KB or more | +4 to +9 % | Password
and salt are copied (#40554) |
| `bun build` with an object `--define` used thousands of times | +4.5 %
| The object is copied per use (#45969) |

#### Not included

- Fixes that need a WebKit change: #39967, #42534, #42982, #43764,
#43786, #44226. #42185 too: a typed array that has no `ArrayBuffer` yet
can't be pinned, so `view.buffer.transfer()` during an async call can
still free its bytes. Creating the `ArrayBuffer` up front costs 7 to 12
% on every async `fs` call, so the fix belongs in JSC: an `ArrayBuffer`
created while the view is borrowed should start out pinned.
- #45442 (`calc()` sums as a flat list): it changes minified output for
real stylesheets to survive a `calc()` with 25,000 terms. It deserves
its own review.
- #40023 (Windows event loop redesign), #29928 (Windows exit path),
#40534, #43963, #39571, #42904, #42834, #36355, #43266: refactors or
features whose crash is already covered or isn't a crash.
- The pull requests marked *(crash fix only)* below should stay open for
their other half.

### How did you verify your code works?

- **Tests.** Every fix has a test that fails on `main` (a release or an
ASAN build) and passes on this branch, except where that isn't
practical: code that only runs on Windows or macOS, inputs that need
several GB of memory, and a few rare races. Those were checked by hand
or by reading.
- **Stored repro scripts.** 230 crash repros ran on release and ASAN
builds of this branch and of `main`, side by side. Release: 88 no longer
crash. ASAN: 106 no longer crash. None crashes that didn't before. What
still crashes needs WebKit, is SQLite's own bug, or isn't a crash. The
ASAN number is from a later commit than the release number.
- **Dev server.** Because one fix makes requests wait, 2,171 generated
programs ran random interleavings of edits, build errors, failing
plugins, reloads, stops and disconnects with about 120,000 requests. No
request hung, was answered twice or got a stale body. `main` hung in 82
of 1,161 programs. This also found the four dev server bugs listed
above.
- **Path helpers.** 336,000 boundary cases with buffers of exactly the
computed size, and 12,003 random calls through 30 JS APIs on an ASAN
build, compared with `main`. No sanitizer report, and the results match
wherever `main` doesn't panic.
- **What worked on 1.4.3 still works.** Reviewers compared behavior with
1.4.3 and took out what changed it: for example an output directory
layout change for 9 or more entry points, a `server.reload()` change,
and a changed error message for `import("file:///50%deposit.ts")`.
- **Not run locally:** the Windows, macOS and FreeBSD code paths. CI
compiles and tests them.
