Problem

  • .on(":not(:not(div))", …) runs its handler for every element, not only for div. A debug build aborts: panic: Unsupported selector components should be filtered out by the parser: :not(div).
  • The cause is lol-html 2.7.2 Ast::add_selector (vendor/lolhtml/src/selectors_vm/ast.rs:299). An inner :not() lowers to Unmatchable, and a negated Unmatchable matches everything.
  • Upstream 2.8.0 flips the negation per level. That still builds one conjunction, so :not(a.b) and :not(:not(a, b)) match too little.

Fix

Background

Downsides

  • .on(":not(a b)", …) now throws (upstream v3). Bun 1.4.3 matched it as :not(b).
  • More than 4096 simple selectors across the alternatives throws Unsupported syntax in selector. Eight :not(a.b) in one compound pass, nine do not.
  • Speed is measured in lol-html alone (within 3% of v3.0.1 without its map), not in a release build of Bun.
Notes

The upstream change that flips the negation per :not() level is cloudflare/lol-html@c464472 (2.8.0). The debug_assert! that the debug build hits is in Condition::from (selectors_vm/ast.rs).

Repro (bun 1.4.3-canary.1, main 367d939):

const doc = "<main><div>a</div><span>b</span></main>";
for (const sel of [":not(:not(div))", "div:not(:not(span))", ":not(div)"]) {
  const matched = [];
  new HTMLRewriter().on(sel, { element(e) { matched.push(e.tagName); } }).transform(doc);
  console.log(JSON.stringify(sel), JSON.stringify(matched));
}
// main:    ["main","div","span"]  ["div"]  ["main","span"]
// this PR: ["div"]                []       ["main","span"]

:not() forms that need OR, on <main id=main><div id=df class=foo></div><div id=db class=bar></div><span id=sf class=foo></span><span id=sb class=bar></span></main>:

selector main (2.7.2) fork bun head (3.0.1) this PR CSS
:not(div.foo) main, sb main, sb main, db, sf, sb main, db, sf, sb
:not(:not(div, span)) everything nothing df, db, sf, sb df, db, sf, sb
:not(div:not(.foo)) main, sf, sb sf main, df, sf, sb main, df, sf, sb
span:not(.foo:not(div)) sb nothing sb sb

The first three commits of this PR pinned the fork's bun head e1a306d. That fixes the reported selectors, but the last two rows show that it also makes some selectors worse than main. So the pin moved to oven-sh/lol-html#9, which is two commits on top of e1a306d. oven-sh/lol-html#11 is one more commit on top of that. Fast-forward merges of the two PRs, in that order, keep the pinned SHA. If #9 is not wanted, the pin can go back to e1a306d and the test "of a compound selector, and nested around a selector list" goes with it.

The size limit: every alternative of a compound selector repeats the rest of the selector below it in the AST, so the expansion can be much larger than the selector. The fork counts the simple selectors that all the alternatives hold together and refuses more than 4096 (only when there is more than one alternative, so a selector that needs no OR has no limit). * with eight :not(aN.bN) is accepted (256 alternatives, 2304 simple selectors), nine is refused. The worst selector that is accepted costs about 2 ms and 4 MB in lol-html. Without the limit, eight :not(a.b) followed by 2,000 descendant compound selectors (6 KB) built 316 MB of AST.

Speed: lol-html 87f7987 (part of v3.0.1, the commit that makes descendant matching linear in the nesting depth) updates a map of open element names for every element. A perf run of Bun with that commit on the v2.7.2 line measured +6% to +19% on an ordinary 1 MiB page (* handler +6.7%, div p +10.7%, a selector that never matches +19.2%). The same shows in lol-html alone (release build, min of 90 runs, microseconds):

selector fork bun head e1a306d e1a306d without 87f7987 pinned 0e6a4b1
* 14,900 13,430 13,600
div p 8,030 6,640 6,840
nomatch-tag 6,320 5,340 5,170
a[href] 7,890 6,590 6,720

oven-sh/lol-html#11 keeps the map only while the open stack is deeper than 64 (built at 65, dropped below 32). The inputs that 87f7987 fixed stay linear: "<a></b>" 100,000 times takes 9.7 ms and div div over 6,000 nested <div> takes 1.6 ms. A stray end tag on a shallow stack is a scan of at most 64 items again, as on bun 1.4.3. The De Morgan commits add nothing measurable (±1%). 40 generated documents that cross both depths, with stray end tags and three handlers, give the same handler calls and output on bun 1.4.3 and on this branch. I did not measure a release build of Bun.

Other user-visible changes between v2.7.2 and v3.0.1. Each one is checked on this branch. The first four have a test in html-rewriter.test.js (taken from the open PR that it covers):

Not covered, unchanged from main: a :not() nested about 5,000 deep ends the process at .on() (recursion in the selectors crate parser, which #34893 was about), and a descendant chain of about 30,000 compound selectors ends it at transform() (#41475, oven-sh/lol-html#1).

The fix is the pin, so a build of this branch with src/ from main does not compile (the Settings fields are private in v3). The fail-before evidence is the released bun 1.4.3.

The fork's own GitHub check is red because its workflow uses actions that are not pinned to a SHA (oven-sh/lol-html#7). Locally, cargo test --features=_integration_test on 0e6a4b1 passes: 213 lib, 3 integration, 38 and 2 doc tests. The lol-html cargo test check of this PR runs the same suite on the pinned commit.

no test proof · iteration 0 · platform-specific test(s) that do not run on this machine, deferring to CI, which covers all platforms: test/js/workerd/html-rewriter.test.js

…ements

The fork's bun branch is now v3.0.1 plus content-handler suspension.
lol-html 2.8.0 compiles a nested :not() by flipping the negation per
level. Before that, the inner :not() lowered to an unmatchable
expression under a negation, which matches every element, and a debug
build hit the debug_assert in selectors_vm/ast.rs.

Settings and MemorySettings are consuming builders in v3, so the two
places that construct them use the with_* and append_* methods.

Status: reproduced on bun 1.4.3-canary.1 (main 367d939) with the three selectors in the PR body. The release build gives the wrong matches. The debug build aborts with panic: Unsupported selector components should be filtered out by the parser: :not(div). On this branch (debug build) the same script prints ["div"], [], ["main","span"], and test/js/workerd/html-rewriter.test.js passes (212 tests). On bun 1.4.3 the new tests fail, except the comment.text "is accepted" cases, which guard behaviour that does not change.

The pin is now 0e6a4b1, which is the fork's bun head e1a306d plus the two commits of oven-sh/lol-html#9 (:not() with De Morgan's laws) plus the one commit of oven-sh/lol-html#11 (no per-element name map on a shallow stack). Those two fork PRs must merge first, in that order. With e1a306d alone, :not(a.b) and :not(:not(a, b)) stay wrong, span:not(.a:not(div)) goes from right to wrong, and an ordinary page is 6% to 19% slower than on bun 1.4.3. The PR notes have the tables.

The fix is the dependency pin, so a build of this branch with src/ from main does not compile against lol-html v3 (the Settings struct fields are private there). The fail-before evidence is the released bun.

Beyond the inline findings, I diffed the 2.x struct-literal to 3.x builder port field by field in both consumers: src/bundler/HTMLScanner.rs still sets the same encoding, preallocation size, 10 MiB cap and strict: false (esi/charset stay on library defaults as before), and src/runtime/api/html_rewriter.rs still sets every one of its five explicit values plus the default parsing-buffer preallocation — so the builder migration itself drops nothing. I also checked the comment-text validation tightening; it comes from the upstream lol-html bump, not from this port.

Extended reasoning...

Findings were posted inline (regression-coverage gap for the other behavior changes the bump ships, :not(:not(a, b)) matching nothing, the update-lolhtml workflow still targeting upstream, and the HTMLScanner preallocation-vs-cap abort on large HTML), so this body only records what else was examined. I ran the diff and compared old and new Settings/MemorySettings construction at each site: HTMLScanner.rs:311-318 reproduces the old encoding, preallocated_parsing_buffer_size, max_allowed_memory_usage and strict values exactly and, as before, leaves enable_esi_tags/adjust_charset_on_meta_tag on defaults; html_rewriter.rs:1057-1066 chains the same five explicit values the old struct literal set and keeps the default preallocation via MemorySettings::new(). The handler append_* calls preserve the original registration order. The vendored lol-html source is not present in this checkout, so I could not independently confirm the fork commit is v3.0.1 plus the resume() patch; that remains a claim from the description a human should check.

The follow-up commit pins the other v3 behaviours with tests, which covers what I asked for earlier. Beyond the inline nit, I also checked the v2 struct-literal to v3 builder migration in src/runtime/api/html_rewriter.rs and src/bundler/HTMLScanner.rs — every field the old literals set (encoding, preallocation/max-memory, strict, esi tags, meta-charset adjust) is carried over by the with_* chain, and the per-handler append_* calls preserve the same registration order. The new .on()-time rejection of a combinator inside :not() is upstream v3 behaviour rather than a regression introduced by the bindings, and it has its own test.

Extended reasoning...

One finding (the per-test timeout nit) is being posted inline, so this body only records what else was examined. The Rust changes are a mechanical API migration: HTMLScanner drops the pre-sized Vec and folds each element_entry into append_element_content_handler, with the same encoding, (input.len()/4).max(1024) preallocation, 10 MiB cap and strict: false; build_settings in html_rewriter.rs now returns Settings<'static,'static> and RewriterPipe chains the same encoding/memory/strict/esi/charset values that the old struct literal set. The lifetime-erasure comments and ownership story around the Rc context and the output-buffer BackRef are unchanged. The combinator-in-:not() rejection is a deliberate upstream v3 parser change that the PR documents and tests, not a binding bug. Vendored lol-html sources are not present in this checkout, so the pinned fork commit and upstream base were not independently verified here.

The runner kills the child when the test times out, so the spawn timeout
and the per-test timeout were a second and a third deadline.

The v3.0.1 base negates every simple selector of a :not() argument into
one conjunction. `:not(a.b)` matches what `:not(a):not(b)` matches,
`:not(:not(a, b))` matches nothing, and a :not() inside the compound
selector of a :not() (`span:not(.a:not(div))`) matches less than it did
on v2.7.2. The fork commit expands a selector to one predicate per
alternative, so all of these match what CSS says.

I reviewed the latest push (the re-pin to 81c8bc1 for the De Morgan :not() change) and didn't find any bugs, but a human look is still worthwhile: this is a major-version bump of a vendored fork that changes selector-matching semantics, and the new pin is a commit the PR text describes as oven-sh/lol-html#9.

What was reviewed:

  • The Settings/MemorySettings builder rewrites in src/bundler/HTMLScanner.rs and src/runtime/api/html_rewriter.rs — every field the old struct literals set is set again, with the same values; handler registration order is unchanged.
  • The :not() expectation table in the new tests — each row checked by hand against CSS negation semantics on the fixture document; the 2^8/2^9 alternative-cap boundary and the depth - 3 descendant count are consistent with the fixture sizes.
  • Not verifiable from this run (no network access): whether 81c8bc1 is on the fork's bun branch rather than a PR-head ref, which .github/workflows/update-lolhtml.yml and the LOLHTML_UPSTREAM_BASE rebase recipe both assume. The PR description still names e1a306d and lists :not(div.foo) / :not(:not(div, span)) as not covered, which the final commit now claims to fix — worth updating so the description matches the pin.
Extended reasoning...

Overview

The PR moves the vendored oven-sh/lol-html fork from a v2.7.2 base to a v3.0.1 base and, in its final commit, re-pins from the fork's stated branch head to 81c8bc1, described as the commit that makes :not() expand to one predicate per alternative (De Morgan). Cargo.lock follows (lol_html 3.0.1, selectors 0.37, hashbrown 0.17 only). Because lol-html 3 makes Settings/MemorySettings builder-only, both Rust call sites (src/bundler/HTMLScanner.rs, src/runtime/api/html_rewriter.rs) are rewritten to with_*/append_* chains. test/js/workerd/html-rewriter.test.js gains ~214 lines covering nested/compound :not(), attribute-name case-insensitivity, SVG/MathML integration-point siblings, comment.text closing-sequence rejection, and a subprocess linearity test.

Security risks

None specific to this diff: no new parsing of untrusted input is introduced in Bun's own code; the builder rewrite preserves the same encoding, memory cap, and strictness settings as before. The dependency swap itself is the risk surface — a different HTML tokenizer/selector VM revision now handles all HTMLRewriter and HTML-bundler input. The comment.text tests do pin that comment-closing sequences (including --!>, leading >/->) are rejected, which is the one security-relevant behavior the bump changes.

Level of scrutiny

Moderate-to-high, but for the pin rather than the Bun-side code. The Rust changes are mechanical and I compared each field of the old struct literals against the new builder chain — nothing is dropped or reordered. The test expectations were checked row-by-row against CSS semantics on the fixture (main > [div.a, span.a, span]) and are correct, including the 256-alternative boundary (:not(a.b) x8 accepted, x9 rejected) and the depth - 3 count for div div div div. What I could not do in this run is confirm that 81c8bc1 is reachable from the fork's bun branch; the repo's vendoring guidance forbids pinning to unmerged-PR refs, the update workflow assumes the pin sits on that branch, and the PR description as written says the pin should move to #9 only after merge. That is a fact a human with network access can settle in one command.

Other factors

No CODEOWNERS entry covers the changed paths. My earlier inline comments on this PR were all resolved by the author; the follow-up commits did add the per-issue regression tests and removed the explicit per-test timeout that I had flagged, so those points are addressed in code. The update-lolhtml workflow mismatch I noted earlier is pre-existing and unchanged. The PR description is now stale relative to the final commit (it still names e1a306d and lists limitations the last commit claims to remove), which a maintainer should have reconciled before merge.

The fork commit refuses a selector whose alternatives hold more than
4096 simple selectors in total. The limit on 256 alternatives alone let
a 6 KB selector (eight `:not(a.b)` and 2,000 descendants) build 316 MB
of AST.

…ep stack

lol-html 87f7987 (v3.0.1) updates a map of open-element names for every
element. On an ordinary 1 MiB page that is +11% to +20% in lol-html
alone. oven-sh/lol-html#11 keeps the map only while the open stack is
deeper than 64, so ordinary pages pay nothing and the pathological
inputs stay linear.

I reviewed the latest push (the pin move to 0e6a4b1) and found no bugs in the Rust port or the new tests, but a human should still confirm the pin before merging: the PR text says the fork PRs (oven-sh/lol-html#9, #11) need to be merged first, and from this checkout I cannot tell whether 0e6a4b1 is the head of the fork's bun branch or still an unmerged PR head, which would be an ephemeral pin.

What was reviewed:

  • Both Settings builder ports (HTMLScanner.rs, html_rewriter.rs): every prior field (encoding, memory limits, strict=false, ESI/charset off) is carried over; handler registration order and the lifetime-erasure shape are unchanged.
  • Repo-wide grep for the old commit/version: no other consumer of lol_html in src/ needs porting, and LOLHTML_COMMIT keeps the exact spelling update-lolhtml.yml seds.
  • New tests: assertions are exact (toEqual tables, exact error strings), the depth test drains stdout/stderr concurrently and uses no per-test timeout.
  • The :not(a b) -> throw and removeAttribute -> remove-all changes are intentional but user-visible; worth a maintainer's sign-off as a breaking change.
Extended reasoning...

The change bumps the vendored oven-sh/lol-html fork pin from a v2.7.2 base to a v3.0.1 base plus two fork patches, updates Cargo.lock accordingly, ports the two Rust call sites from struct-literal Settings to the v3 builder API, and adds ~220 lines of HTMLRewriter tests. It touches no auth, crypto, or injection surface; the parser it bumps does process untrusted HTML and selectors, and the new 4096-simple-selector expansion cap is exercised by a test at the boundary. The Rust diff is mechanical and preserves every previous setting, and no third-party objection is outstanding (CodeRabbit threads were resolved by a non-author). What decided defer over approve is that the load-bearing content lives outside the repo in a fork commit I could not fetch to verify is on the bun branch rather than an unmerged PR, and that the bump intentionally changes user-visible .on() selector semantics.

… and CLI (#46021)

### What does this PR do?

Hardening. This collects the open pull requests that fix a crash in Bun
into one change, and fixes about 20 more crashes that had no pull
request.

"Crash" here means a segfault, a Rust panic, an abort, a failed
assertion, memory corruption that a sanitizer reports, a native stack
overflow, or an exception that ends the process and that the program
can't catch. With this PR those cases throw a normal error, print a
normal CLI error and exit 1, or just work.

306 pull requests are included: 227 whole, and 79 cut down to the crash
fix where the rest was a refactor, a feature or a behavior change. Each
one was checked against current `main` first. 45 more turned out to be
fixed already, and 17 were duplicates. The full list is at the bottom.

#### Crashes you could hit in normal use

- **`bun build` with macros and a `.env` file crashed at random.** In a
repro with many macro modules, more than a third of the builds crashed.
Now 3,000 of 3,000 produce the right bundle. (#45960)
- **`bun run` and `bunx` aborted if a signal arrived while the child was
being spawned.** (#38926, #45965)
- **`bun build --compile ./index.js ./public/*` panicked** if an
embedded file's name wasn't valid UTF-8.
- **A truncated or corrupted compiled executable** died with SIGBUS or a
panic at startup. It now prints an error. (#31787, #38251, #41360)
- **Dev server:** several `Option::unwrap()` panics after a failed or
deleted import (#38046, #44744, #44746), a segfault when an `onLoad`
plugin throws while another bundle is queued, a request that hung and
then panicked with `bundle active`, and `server.stop()` that never
resolved after a client aborted a waiting request.
- **`Bun.serve`:** `server.fetch(url, { headers: new Headers() })`
followed by a GC segfaulted (#40888). Routes were used after free after
`server.reload()` with `tls.serverName` (#38636).
- **`text()` and `json()` on a stream of string chunks** could abort the
process, a regression in 1.4.0. (#44269)
- **`Bun.Transpiler` with `exports.eliminate` or `exports.replace`**
aborted on `export default 1` and on most re-export clauses. (#44137)
- **A decorated `declare` field in a class expression** with
`experimentalDecorators` panicked. (#38095)
- **YAML and JSON5 files with a key that isn't a string** panicked with
`--no-bundle` and in `Bun.Transpiler`. (#41827)
- **`Bun.FileSystemRouter`:** reading `.params` segfaulted when a
rejected route candidate left its parameters behind. (#39290, #39291)
- **Native addons that call `uv_async_*`, `uv_timer_*`, `uv_idle_*`,
`uv_prepare_*`, `uv_check_*`, `uv_queue_work` or `uv_cwd`** aborted with
"unsupported uv function" on Linux and macOS. They're implemented now.
(#36609, #39652, #39892)
- **`--watch` and `--hot`** panicked when the system was out of inotify
instances or file descriptors, or when the reload `exec` failed. They
print an error now. (#39629, #39975, #44837)
- **Paths longer than the path buffer** panicked in `bun install`, the
resolver, the bundler, `--compile`, `tsconfig.json` `paths` and
`baseUrl`, `package.json` `main` and `sideEffects`, `bun run --filter`,
`bun pm diff`, source maps and snapshots. They're ordinary errors now,
or they work. (#36340, #37529, #39104, #39650, #43067)
- **A Worker that creates a `ShadowRealm` and imports
`node:worker_threads` in it** segfaulted.
- **`structuredClone` or `postMessage` of an X25519 key** gave an object
that aborted the process when read. (#45624)
- **`node:stream` web adapters and `node:http2`** could end the process
with an exception that no handler could catch. (#45076, #45975)
- **Windows:** a watcher panic in a burst of file changes (#44344), a
segfault after the machine resumes from sleep (#33015), crashes in the
shell's pipe reader (#39638, #43606), and addons that import from
`node.exe` without the delay-load hook (#35618).

Most of the rest needs unusual input: strings near the 2 GiB limit,
buffers that another thread or a getter resizes or detaches in the
middle of a call, `worker.terminate()` at a bad moment, running out of
memory or file descriptors, very deep nesting, or hostile arguments to
`bun:ffi`, `node:vm` and `bun:sqlite`.

#### Behavior changes

Things that didn't crash before and behave differently now:

- `new` on native functions that aren't constructors throws a
`TypeError`, as in Node: `util.types.*`, `buffer.isAscii`, `isUtf8`,
`transcode`, `resolveObjectURL`, `bun:jsc` exports, `cc()` symbols. It
used to return the call's result. They also stop printing as `[class
hostname]`. (#34575)
- `` $`cmd` `` throws `ERR_INVALID_ARG_VALUE` if an environment
variable's name or value contains a NUL byte. It used to cut the value
at the NUL. (#44981)
- `cc()` functions throw a `TypeError` for arguments that used to reach
C as garbage, and `read.*(ptr, NaN)` throws. (#37989, #38057, #40773)
- As PID 1, `bun` exits with 128 + the signal number on Ctrl+C or
`docker stop`. (#38877)
- A `NODE_MODULE` addon that's already loaded by the main thread throws
`ERR_DLOPEN_FAILED` when a live Worker loads it too, as in Node.
(#39968)
- An exception from a `node:vm` context reaches `uncaughtException`
handlers. (#39992) `vm.constants.DONT_CONTEXTIFY` returns the real
global proxy. (#34623)
- `createPrivateKey` rejects an EC JWK whose private value doesn't match
its public point. (#33752)
- `@dec static {}` is a syntax error, as in TypeScript and esbuild.
(#44883)
- `clearTimeout` ignores 0 and negative ids, and timer ids no longer
wrap. (#44771)
- HEAD for a `Response` whose body is an S3-backed `Blob` reports the
length that GET sends. (#44734)
- `bun:sqlite` and `node:sqlite`: if `iterate()` left a write unfinished
on a connection that has a hook, a user function or an authorizer, the
write is finished on the connection's next call instead of during
garbage collection. If the database is gone too, it's rolled back.
- `bun test --bail` runs exit listeners and closes SQLite databases.
(#39010)
- Dev server: a request for a client script waits while a bundle is in
flight (#42733), query strings reach framework routes (#33232), and a
request gets a 500 instead of hanging when plugins fail (#36812).

#### File formats

- `.jsc` bytecode files get a 24-byte footer so they can be verified
before decoding. Files from an older Bun are ignored and the source is
parsed instead. (#39396)
- `node:vm` `cachedData` gets an 8-byte checksum. A blob from an older
Bun is rejected, which the API allows. (#32839)
- The built-in modules section of a compiled executable changes from
format 1 to 2 and carries an engine stamp. (#44907)

#### Performance

Measured in instructions per operation on release builds of this branch
and its base, with an A/A run for the noise floor (0.0 to 0.2 %).

No change: `Bun.serve`, `node:http`, WebSocket echo and publish, `bun
build` of 3,807 modules, `bun run` with 2,000 imports, `readdir` /
`Glob` / `fs.cp` over 23,689 entries, startup and RSS. The binary grows
by 176 KB (0.17 %).

| Faster | Instructions |
| --- | --- |
| WebSocket echo of a 1 MB non-ASCII text message | −72 % |
| `Bun.inspect` of a large non-ASCII string | −39 % |
| `Bun.markdown.html` on large non-ASCII input | −33 % |
| `` $`cmd` `` with 300 environment variables | −6 % |
| `fs.readSync` | −5 % |
| `TextEncoder.encodeInto`, short ASCII strings | −4 % |
| async `crypto.pbkdf2`, 16-byte inputs | −17 % |

| Slower | Instructions | Why |
| --- | --- | --- |
| `cc()` calls | +5 to +51 per call | Argument count and type checks,
and a check for `close()` (#37989, #38057, #43802, #44921). `dlopen()`
calls don't change |
| `process.env.X = v` | 38 → 593 per write | Writes aren't cached. Reads
don't change (#38871) |
| async `crypto.pbkdf2`, inputs of 1 KB or more | +4 to +9 % | Password
and salt are copied (#40554) |
| `bun build` with an object `--define` used thousands of times | +4.5 %
| The object is copied per use (#45969) |

#### Not included

- Fixes that need a WebKit change: #39967, #42534, #42982, #43764,
#43786, #44226. #42185 too: a typed array that has no `ArrayBuffer` yet
can't be pinned, so `view.buffer.transfer()` during an async call can
still free its bytes. Creating the `ArrayBuffer` up front costs 7 to 12
% on every async `fs` call, so the fix belongs in JSC: an `ArrayBuffer`
created while the view is borrowed should start out pinned.
- #45442 (`calc()` sums as a flat list): it changes minified output for
real stylesheets to survive a `calc()` with 25,000 terms. It deserves
its own review.
- #40023 (Windows event loop redesign), #29928 (Windows exit path),
#40534, #43963, #39571, #42904, #42834, #36355, #43266: refactors or
features whose crash is already covered or isn't a crash.
- The pull requests marked *(crash fix only)* below should stay open for
their other half.

### How did you verify your code works?

- **Tests.** Every fix has a test that fails on `main` (a release or an
ASAN build) and passes on this branch, except where that isn't
practical: code that only runs on Windows or macOS, inputs that need
several GB of memory, and a few rare races. Those were checked by hand
or by reading.
- **Stored repro scripts.** 230 crash repros ran on release and ASAN
builds of this branch and of `main`, side by side. Release: 88 no longer
crash. ASAN: 106 no longer crash. None crashes that didn't before. What
still crashes needs WebKit, is SQLite's own bug, or isn't a crash. The
ASAN number is from a later commit than the release number.
- **Dev server.** Because one fix makes requests wait, 2,171 generated
programs ran random interleavings of edits, build errors, failing
plugins, reloads, stops and disconnects with about 120,000 requests. No
request hung, was answered twice or got a stale body. `main` hung in 82
of 1,161 programs. This also found the four dev server bugs listed
above.
- **Path helpers.** 336,000 boundary cases with buffers of exactly the
computed size, and 12,003 random calls through 30 JS APIs on an ASAN
build, compared with `main`. No sanitizer report, and the results match
wherever `main` doesn't panic.
- **What worked on 1.4.3 still works.** Reviewers compared behavior with
1.4.3 and took out what changed it: for example an output directory
layout change for 9 or more entry points, a `server.reload()` change,
and a changed error message for `import("file:///50%deposit.ts")`.
- **Not run locally:** the Windows, macOS and FreeBSD code paths. CI
compiles and tests them.
