Fixes #44387

Problem

  • Bun.write(Bun.stdout, data) over 1 KiB under bun x.js >> out.log puts NUL bytes before the data: 1996 NULs for a 2000 byte write.
  • WriteFile::run_with_fd (src/runtime/webcore/blob/write_file.rs:470) calls preallocate_file: fallocate with mode 0, which grows the file to the payload length. >> opens the log with O_APPEND, so the kernel writes at the new end.
  • A short copy keeps the grown size as a NUL tail: Bun.write(path, Bun.file(fd)) from a positioned fd, and shell mv across file systems.

Fix

  • preallocate_file (src/sys/lib.rs) passes FALLOC_FL_KEEP_SIZE. The blocks are still reserved. The write that follows sets the size.
  • Two copy fallbacks in src/sys/lib.rs that called fallocate directly now call preallocate_file.
  • The four copy sites that preallocate (those two, the shell mv fallback, the Bun.write kernel-copy loop) release the reserved blocks after a short copy: bun_sys::release_preallocation (an fstat, then ftruncate to the current size) or an ftruncate to the bytes copied.
  • Correct because no caller reads the size that fallocate set. Each writes or copies its bytes right after (see Notes).
  • Verified: four new tests in test/js/bun/io/bun-write.test.js and test/js/bun/shell/commands/mv.test.ts fail on 1.4.4-canary.1+5c6d4e24c and pass here. Notes lists the other suites.

Background

Downsides

  • A write that fails midway on Bun.write(fd, string) or fs.writeFile to a caller's fd leaves the reserved blocks past EOF allocated until a truncate or unlink. Measured on ext4: a 4 MiB reservation and a 1 MiB write leave st_blocks at 4 MiB. The copy sites trim them now, these two write sites do not.
  • One fstat per cross-device copy fallback (bun_sys and the shell mv), on a path that already does an openat, a copy and a close. Nothing changes off Linux and Android.
Notes

What changed on 2026-10-23 (a3dbe73). The branch conflicted with main in src/install/TarballStream.rs, src/libarchive/lib.rs and test/cli/install/bun-install-streaming-extract.test.ts. main (5c6d4e2) is merged in, and the three files are resolved to main's side.

Repro on 1.4.4-canary.1+5c6d4e24c:

printf 'abc\n' > out.log
bun -e 'await Bun.write(Bun.stdout, "x".repeat(1999) + "\n")' >> out.log
wc -c < out.log # 4000, expected 2004
tr -cd '\0' < out.log | wc -c # 1996, expected 0

The same through Bun.file(fd) with fs.openSync(p, "a") needs a payload of 256 KiB or more: a shorter string takes the synchronous main-thread path, which does not preallocate.

The four new tests. On 1.4.4-canary.1+5c6d4e24c (the release build of the main commit that is merged in) all four fail. With a debug build of a3dbe73 all four pass.

  • appends to stdout redirected with >> (test/js/bun/io/bun-write.test.js): size 4000, expected 2004.
  • appends to a file descriptor opened with 'a' (same file): size 600000, expected 300004.
  • Bun.write(path, Bun.file(fd)) with a positioned fd does not leave preallocated zeros (same file): size 2162688, expected 65536.
  • across devices, the destination is the bytes copied, not st_size (test/js/bun/shell/commands/mv.test.ts): the destination of a sysfs file is 4096 bytes, expected the 5 bytes of content. The test is skipped where /sys/devices/system/cpu/online does not exist.

A probe with 12 cells. A program prints n bytes, and sh redirects them into a log that holds 4 bytes. Bytes in the log afterwards, and how many are NUL:

1,000 2,000 70,000 1,000,000
Bun.write(Bun.stdout), >>, canary 5c6d4e2 1,004, 0 NUL 4,000, 1,996 NUL 140,000, 69,996 NUL 2,000,000, 999,996 NUL
Bun.write(Bun.stdout), >>, this branch 1,004, 0 NUL 2,004, 0 NUL 70,004, 0 NUL 1,000,004, 0 NUL

The controls (Bun.write(Bun.stdout) with >, and process.stdout.write with >>) are right on both builds in all four sizes.

Other suites run with the debug build of a3dbe73:

  • All of test/js/bun/shell/commands/mv.test.ts: 16 pass, 1 skip, 0 fail.
  • writeFile with a preallocate-sized buffer in test/js/node/fs/fs.test.ts: 4 pass.
  • The sparse tests in test/js/bun/archive.test.ts: 12 pass.
  • sparse tar members in test/cli/install/bun-install-streaming-extract.test.ts: 2 pass.
  • All of test/js/bun/io/bun-write.test.js: 109 pass, 1 fail. The failure is Bun.file(0) survives GC, which hit the 5 s limit in the concurrent run (the file is describe.concurrent, and the debug build has ASAN). It passes alone in 1.0 s. It does not reach a preallocation.
  • cargo check -p bun_sys for aarch64-apple-darwin, x86_64-unknown-freebsd, x86_64-pc-windows-msvc, aarch64-linux-android and x86_64-unknown-linux-musl, and cargo clippy -p bun_sys: all clean.

Syscalls per call, counted from the diff: unchanged. Each site makes one fallocate call, as before.

Per-caller review of preallocate_file with FALLOC_FL_KEEP_SIZE, against main 5c6d4e2 (seven sites):

  • blob/write_file.rs (Bun.write(dest, string | bytes)): writes the whole payload from the fd position, or appends. The size follows the write. This is the bug of Bun.write(Bun.stdout, data) pads an appended file with NUL bytes when data is over 1024 bytes (fallocate on an O_APPEND fd) #44387.
  • runtime/node/node_fs.rs (fs.writeFile): writes the buffer, then ftruncate to the written length for a path with a truncating flag. For a caller's fd there is no ftruncate, so a short write no longer leaves a NUL tail either. The O_APPEND skip stays: an append lands at the end of the file, so a reservation at the cursor is not used. Against main this file differs by one comment.
  • blob/copy_file.rs (Bun.write(path, Bun.file(src))): the destination is opened O_TRUNC. copy_file_range copies from the source fd's position and stops at its EOF. The size is what was copied. This is the case from Bun.write(path, Bun.file(fd)): trim the preallocated destination to the bytes copied #41487, and the positioned fd test covers it.
  • sys/lib.rs move_file_z_with_handle and copy_file_z_slow_with_handle (cross-device fallbacks, two sites): O_TRUNC destination, then copy_file. The size is what was copied. These two called fallocate directly and now call preallocate_file.
  • shell/builtin/mv.rs (cross-device fallback): O_TRUNC destination, bun_sys::copy_file. This is the case from shell mv: trim the preallocated destination to the bytes copied on the cross-device fallback #41677, and the mv test covers it.
  • jsc/RuntimeTranspilerCache.rs: pwritev of the whole content from offset 0 into a fresh tmpfile.
  • The tar writers (libarchive/lib.rs, install/TarballStream.rs) do not preallocate on main any more.

Reserved blocks after a short write, measured with raw syscalls on ext4 (measured again on 2026-10-23): fallocate(KEEP_SIZE, 0, 4 MiB), write 1 MiB, st_blocks 4 MiB. After ftruncate to 1 MiB: st_blocks 1 MiB. Close alone does not free them. With mode 0, the same short write left 3 MiB of visible NUL bytes in the file. preallocate_file does nothing off Linux and Android, so the change has no effect there.

Related PRs:

no test proof · iteration 1 · platform-specific test(s) that do not run on this machine, deferring to CI, which covers all platforms: test/js/bun/shell/commands/mv.test.ts, test/js/bun/io/bun-write.test.js

sys::preallocate_file passes FALLOC_FL_KEEP_SIZE to fallocate, so a
preallocation reserves blocks but leaves the visible size to the write
that follows. A mode 0 fallocate grows a shorter file first, and a write
on an O_APPEND fd (bun x.js >> log) then lands after the grown end with
a hole of NUL bytes before the data.

node_fs no longer needs the F_GETFL check that skipped the preallocation
on an O_APPEND fd. The two direct fallocate calls in the copy fallbacks
go through preallocate_file.

Walkthrough

The change makes Linux and Android preallocation request space without extending file size. Both Unix copy fallbacks use the shared helper. Tests cover append-mode writes, positioned-source copies, and a Linux sysfs cross-device move.

Changes

File write and preallocation behavior

Layer / File(s) Summary
Keep-size preallocation in copy fallbacks
src/sys/lib.rs, src/runtime/node/node_fs.rs, test/js/bun/shell/commands/mv.test.ts
preallocate_file now passes FALLOC_FL_KEEP_SIZE on Linux and Android. Both Unix copy fallbacks call the helper with offset 0 and the source size. The node filesystem comment now states that an O_APPEND write lands at EOF. The Linux sysfs test checks that the destination matches the bytes read and that mv exits nonzero.
Append-write and partial-source regression tests
test/js/bun/io/bun-write.test.js
POSIX tests check large string writes to redirected stdout and append-mode descriptors. A Linux test checks that writing from a positioned source copies only the remaining bytes without a zero-filled tail.

Full details: Title check

Explanation

The title "Keep the file size when preallocating a write" matches the main change: preallocate_file now passes FALLOC_FL_KEEP_SIZE so reserving blocks no longer grows the file. It does not mention the Bun.write NUL-byte symptom or the copy-path call-site changes, but it refers to the real core change and is specific enough for a reviewer scanning history.

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

Issue #44387 requires that a Bun.write(Bun.stdout, data) append, with stdout opened O_APPEND (>>), writes no NUL bytes before the payload. The whole-PR diff against merge base 5c6d4e2 changes preallocate_file in src/sys/lib.rs to call fallocate with libc::FALLOC_FL_KEEP_SIZE on Linux and Android. The reservation no longer grows the visible file, so the O_APPEND write lands at the real end. The issue's proposed FALLOC_FL_KEEP_SIZE option is implemented. The new tests in test/js/bun/io/bun-write.test.js cover stdout redirected with >> (4000 bytes before, expected 2004) and a descriptor opened with 'a'. They check the preserved prefix, final size, and absence of NUL bytes. The issue's repro (printf 'abc\n', then a 1999+newline payload appended) is addressed by this mechanism. The author reports these tests fail on the canary build and pass on a debug build of a3dbe73. Those results are author-reported; this review did not execute them. The objective is met by source evidence in the diff.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The whole-PR source diff against 5c6d4e2 contains src/sys/lib.rs (three hunks) and a comment-only change in src/runtime/node/node_fs.rs, plus two test files. The preallocate_file hunk is the direct fix for #44387. The two copy-fallback hunks (move_file_z_with_handle and copy_file_z_slow_with_handle) now call preallocate_file instead of calling fallocate with mode 0. They address the same root cause: a short copy leaves a NUL tail when the size was set by preallocation. The PR description links them to #41487 and #41677, and the new mv and Bun.file(fd) tests cover them. The earlier tar-writer changes are absent from the current whole-PR diff, so no unrelated libarchive or install change remains. The changes support the stated objective and show no concrete unrelated work.

The description clearly explains the problem, implementation, scope, downsides, and verification results. It does not use the exact template headings, but it provides the required information in equivalent sections.

A run for the open review thread on src/sys/lib.rs:7317 ("Preserve the declared size of sparse archive entries"). It comes from a pre-merge check of this head (11a4f78087). I did not run it again myself.

At this head a tar member of 3,000,000 bytes that ends in a sparse hole is unpacked as 4,096 bytes, with exit code 0. Main gives 3,000,000.

# needs GNU tar; BUN=<the binary>
mkdir -p src/package p; echo '{"name":"pk","version":"1.0.0"}' > src/package/package.json
for n in 300000 3000000; do truncate -s $n src/package/s$n.bin; printf 'DATA' | dd of=src/package/s$n.bin conv=notrunc status=none; done
tar --sparse -czf pk.tgz -C src package
echo '{"name":"proj","dependencies":{"pk":"file:../pk.tgz"}}' > p/package.json

Measured in the check, 3 fresh directories per build:

Two asks from the full pre-merge check of this head (11a4f78087). The check found the fix right and complete at every door of #44387. I did not run these numbers again myself.

1. The two tar writers (must change before a merge). They leaned on the size that fallocate mode 0 grew. With FALLOC_FL_KEEP_SIZE a tar member that ends in a sparse hole is cut.

2. The O_APPEND skip of fs.writeFile (a question, with numbers). The diff drops it.

  • strace, 3 MiB, fs.writeFileSync(path, { flag: "a" }): main does write. This head does fallocate(KEEP_SIZE, 0, len) and write.
  • fs.writeFileSync(fd) with an a descriptor: main does fcntl, write. This head does lseek, fallocate, write. That is one call more, not one fewer as the PR text says. The text is right for the other flags.
  • The range is the one of the cursor, not of the end: with the cursor at 52,428,800 of a 100 MiB file the call is fallocate(KEEP_SIZE, 52428800, 3145728) and the write goes to 104,857,600. On a file that is one hole this takes 12,288 blocks where main took 6,144.
  • Time of one call on tmpfs, 5 append cells (2 and 6 MiB, by path, by descriptor, onto a 256 MiB log): 7.9 to 14.6 % slower (main against main: -3.2 to +4.5 %), slower than both copies of main in 55 of 75 rounds.
  • A failed append by fs.writeFile holds 6,144 blocks where main held 8.

The question: keep the skip where the flag is known at no cost (the a of a path), and decide for a descriptor.

Smaller points for the text: the source comment says 6 MB, and the thresholds in the code are 1,024, 262,144 and 2 MiB. #41685 has this fix in its write_file.rs half. Its other half (Bun.write(Bun.stdout, Bun.file(p)) under >> rejects with EBADF) is not touched here.

✅ @robobun, your commit f5fcab65bd8f6ef0cc9c25d22004676e7ca4f844 passed in Build #131301! 🎉

That installs a local version of the PR into your bun-44425 executable, so you can run:

bun-44425 --bun

libarchive reports a trailing sparse hole through the offset of its
ARCHIVE_EOF call, not as a data block. Both archive writers tracked only
the data blocks, so the ftruncate that handles a trailing hole stopped
at the last data byte. A mode 0 fallocate masked this for entries over
1 MB. With FALLOC_FL_KEEP_SIZE the writers have to extend the file
themselves.

fs.writeFile keeps its O_APPEND check: an append lands at the end of the
file, so a reservation at the cursor is not used.

Nothing blocking. The comments below are optional suggestions. There is no need to push a fix for them before merging.

The second commit now carries libarchive's ARCHIVE_EOF offset into the final truncate at both block-based writers (src/libarchive/lib.rs and src/install/TarballStream.rs), and the O_APPEND skip in src/runtime/node/node_fs.rs is intact, so the two points from my earlier pass are covered by the current head. Beyond the inline finding, I also checked the write_data_block reorder (an empty block now only raises entry_final_offset to its offset and still skips the write) and the two cross-device copy fallbacks in src/sys/lib.rs (the #[cfg(unix)] call into preallocate_file is still a no-op off Linux, so macOS behavior is unchanged).

Extended reasoning...

The PR switches preallocate_file to FALLOC_FL_KEEP_SIZE, routes the two inline fallocate calls through it, and extends both tar block writers to the entry's real size when it ends in a sparse hole; it touches no auth, crypto, or input-validation surface. The remaining inline finding is a pre-existing sibling extractor (Bun.Archive glob/files path) that the same class of fix does not yet reach, which is why a human should still weigh scope before merging.

Propagate sparse-tail truncation failures.

Both extraction paths rely on ftruncate to preserve an entry’s reported size when it ends in a sparse hole. Both discard its error. If the filesystem rejects the extension, extraction reports success with a truncated file.

  • src/libarchive/lib.rs#L350-L350: Return an error when ftruncate fails so read_data_into_fd does not return Result::Ok.
  • src/install/TarballStream.rs#L736-L736: Propagate the truncate failure and mark the extraction task as failed.

This finding follows the changed EOF-offset handling in this cohort.

The trailing-sparse-hole fix in 7dba25a addresses what I raised on the earlier revision, and this run found no new bugs; because the change alters the semantics of a shared syscall helper with eight callers and there are still open inline threads from other reviewers, a human look is still worthwhile.

What was reviewed:

  • Traced the ARCHIVE_EOF offset out-param through both archive writers: read_data_into_fd and the streaming WantData arm now take max(final_offset, realsize) before the trailing ftruncate, and write_data_block updates entry_final_offset before its empty-block early return.
  • Checked the new gnuSparseFile header (typeflag S, GNU magic, sparse map at 386, realsize at 483) against the old-GNU sparse layout, and confirmed BUN_INSTALL_STREAMING_MIN_SIZE and BUN_FEATURE_FLAG_DISABLE_STREAMING_INSTALL are read in src/; the 500,000-byte entry sits below the 1,000,000-byte preallocation threshold so the test fails on the base for both sizes.
  • Walked the remaining preallocate_file callers (write_file.rs, copy_file.rs, RuntimeTranspilerCache.rs, shell mv.rs, both cross-device copy fallbacks): each writes or copies the full payload immediately after, so none relies on fallocate growing the file.
  • One note: the description says fs.writeFile drops its fcntl(F_GETFL) O_APPEND check and saves a syscall, but the final diff keeps that check (the node_fs.rs change is comment-only), so the description is out of date on that point.
Extended reasoning...

The change switches bun_sys::preallocate_file in src/sys/lib.rs to FALLOC_FL_KEEP_SIZE, routes the two raw fallocate calls in the cross-device copy fallbacks through it, and extends both tar extractors (src/libarchive/lib.rs and src/install/TarballStream.rs) to the entry's real size when a GNU sparse entry ends in a hole, with new tests in test/js/bun/io/bun-write.test.js and test/cli/install/bun-install-streaming-extract.test.ts. It touches no auth, crypto, or injection surface; the sensitive part is file-size semantics across every preallocation caller. The bug hunt ran dry with no findings and the earlier blocking finding is fixed in the second commit, but the helper-wide semantic change plus unresolved third-party inline threads of unknown content (coderabbitai at src/sys/lib.rs and bun-write.test.js, github-actions at four sites) mean approval without a human look is not justified. No CODEOWNERS entry covers the changed paths.

The description now matches d4167acebb. What changed in it:

  • fs.writeFile keeps its O_APPEND skip. The description said that this PR removes the check and saves one fcntl.
  • The tar writers are in the Fix section. They read the grown size for an entry that ends in a sparse hole. They now take the length from the end offset that libarchive reports, and a failed ftruncate is an error. That last change is in d4167acebb, under the title Shorten the comments.
  • There are four new tests, not two. I ran them on bun 1.4.3 (1.4.3-canary.1+367d939d9): all four fail. The sparse entry of 500,000 bytes comes out 1,024 bytes long.
  • tar extraction: no disk allocation from the entry header, file length from libarchive #36542 is no longer independent of this PR. git merge-tree shows conflicts in src/install/TarballStream.rs, src/libarchive/lib.rs and test/cli/install/bun-install-streaming-extract.test.ts.

One point is open, and it is in Downsides. On Windows the new ftruncate runs on a file that nothing marks sparse. By reading (not run), NTFS then allocates the declared length of the entry. #31581 compiles that call out on Windows. #36542 marks the file sparse first. This PR does neither. The choice needs a maintainer's decision, so no code change for it yet.

This PR no longer skips the WriteFile preallocation for an O_APPEND fd.
The NUL bytes that the preallocation leaves before appended data come
from fallocate growing the file, and #44425 changes that in
preallocate_file for every caller. The test for that case goes with it.

The remaining tests move next to the Bun.write(Bun.stdout, Bun.file(path))
tests, and the stdout test gets a name of its own, so the two PRs do not
touch the same lines of bun-write.test.js.

Two regression tests for the copy sites that this change also fixes are in 5276f89 (branch robobun/52b126a4/copy-site-tests). The commit is one commit on top of d4167ac and changes tests only.

Results:

  • bun 1.4.3 (1.4.3-canary.1+367d939d9): both fail. The Bun.write destination is 2,162,688 bytes for 65,536 bytes copied. The mv destination is 4,096 bytes for 5 bytes of content.
  • A debug build of d4167ac with no other source change: both pass, and the rest of mv.test.ts passes (13 pass, 1 skip).

I closed #41487 and #41677 in favor of this pull request. The trim that they add after a short copy is not needed for the NUL tail. It would only free the reserved blocks past EOF that the Downsides section names.

Conflicts in src/install/TarballStream.rs, src/libarchive/lib.rs and
test/cli/install/bun-install-streaming-extract.test.ts, resolved to
main's side.

main now writes tar entries through EntryWriter. It takes the length of
an entry from the offset that libarchive returns with ARCHIVE_EOF, it
returns an ftruncate failure, and it does not preallocate. The two tar
writers therefore no longer read a size that fallocate set, and main's
'sparse tar members' tests cover the entries that end in a hole. The
tar-writer changes and the two tar tests of this branch are dropped.
Bun.write(path, Bun.file(fd)) with a source fd positioned past 0, and
the Bun shell mv cross-device fallback on a sysfs file. Both preallocate
the destination to the source's st_size and then copy fewer bytes. The
destination must end at the bytes copied, with no NUL tail.

This branch conflicted with main. a3dbe73 merges main (5c6d4e2) into it.

The four new tests fail on 1.4.4-canary.1+5c6d4e24c and pass with a debug build of a3dbe73. The description now matches this state.

A copy into a preallocated destination that ends short of the source
size leaves the reserved blocks past EOF allocated. The four copy sites
that preallocate now trim them: the two cross-device fallbacks in
bun_sys and the shell mv through release_preallocation, and the
Bun.write kernel-copy loop with an ftruncate to the bytes copied.
