Related to #9099

Problem

  • The shell's message about a command that does not start ignores the command's redirect. nosuch_cmd 2> err.txt prints bun: command not found: nosuch_cmd on the script's stderr and makes no err.txt. nosuch_cmd 2>&1 leaves stdout empty (can not redirect stderr to stdout for command not found #9099).
  • Cmd::transition_to_exec (src/runtime/shell/states/Cmd.rs:503, :517, :639) wrote it to the inherited stderr. Two arms returned before any redirect.

Fix

  • Cmd::apply_redirect runs once, before builtin lookup and the PATH search (POSIX 2.9.1). It points the command's streams, Cmd.io, at the target.
  • Builtins, the spawn and the shell's messages read Cmd.io, so the three arms are not edited. Builtin::init_redirections, Cmd::init_subproc_redirections, CowFd and BuiltinIO are deleted.
  • Verified: test/js/bun/shell/bunshell.test.ts (76 new cases, 38 fail on main) and test/js/bun/shell/.
  • Self-reviewed: 18 concerns raised, 9 addressed. Notes has the rest.

Background

  • A Cmd is the state of one simple command. It inherits its streams, an IO. Before, a builtin and a spawn each applied the redirect for itself.
  • A builtin writes through an IOWriter, a write queue on an fd. A child needs a blocking fd, so the step takes the exec form.
  • Considered: a patch in the three arms, or a fake builtin. Both keep two appliers.

Downsides

  • Scripts see more changes (Notes), as in bash. nosuch >f empties f. In a | b <f the pipe closes at the redirect, so a fails at its next write.
  • A command that starts has 0 more syscalls and mallocs (2 with a Bun.file(fd) target). In shell code /bin/true runs 177 more instructions (of 63,000), true 159 fewer.
Notes

Every behaviour change outside the symptom

For a command that does not start:

  • nosuch > f makes f, and empties it if it exists. bash does the same.
  • A redirect that fails is the only thing the command reports. nosuch < missing prints the open error, not command not found. The command is not searched for.
  • $EMPTY > f (no command name after expansion) makes f. $EMPTY < missing reports the open error and exits 1.
  • nosuch > ${new Blob(["x"])} rejects with the same error as a command that exists. Before it resolved with exit code 1, also under .nothrow().
  • A write of the shell's message that fails on a redirect target (nosuch 2> /dev/full, nosuch 2>&1 | true) ends the command with exit code 1 and throws nothing. bash is silent too. A write that fails on the inherited stderr still rejects, as yield.test.ts pins.
  • The exit code stays 1 and the message text stays. bash has 127 and 126.

For a command that runs:

  • A stream that the redirect replaces is released when the redirect is applied. For a member of a pipeline that stream is the shell's end of a pipe. In a | b < f the read end closes then, and a gets EPIPE or SIGPIPE at its next write. In a > f | b the write end closes then, and b reads the end of input at once. Before, both ends stayed open until the command with the redirect exited. bash and dash do what this PR does: sh -c 'sleep 0.1; echo hi; echo after >&2' | sleep 0.5 < f prints no after there (PIPESTATUS 141 0). main prints it.
  • A builtin writes to Bun.file(fd): echo hi > ${Bun.file(fd)}. Before the output was dropped. The command writes to a copy of the fd, and the fd of the caller keeps its flags.
  • An external command with &> to Bun.file(fd) gets both streams on the fd. Before only stdout went to it.
  • A Bun.file(fd) whose fd is not open is a redirect that fails, for a builtin, an external command and a command that does not exist: bun: Bad file descriptor: Bun.file(fd), exit code 1. Before, a builtin dropped its output and exited 0, and an external command reported the spawn error with the path of the executable.
  • A Response target is the file that its body is, for both exec forms. A builtin rejected new Response(Bun.file(path)) and it now writes to the file. An external command opened that file without truncation and it is now opened like > path. A builtin accepted a Response of an in-memory Blob and dropped the output. It now rejects it, like every in-memory target. A Response that is rejected keeps its body, and a stream body is not read. Before, an external command spent it. A Response of a file stream (new Response(Bun.file(path).stream())) is rejected for both exec forms. An external command wrote to that file before, without truncation.
  • cmd > ${readableStream} on an external command throws. Before it aborted the process (panic: TODO SHELL READABLE STREAM). shell: throw instead of panicking when a ReadableStream is used as a redirect #40885 rejects a stream earlier, when the template is parsed, with a better message. The test here requires a rejection that names the stream, so it passes with and without shell: throw instead of panicking when a ReadableStream is used as a redirect #40885.
  • ambiguous redirect: at names an external command as typed. Before it was the resolved path.
  • A target after 2>&1 or 1>&2 (the parser reads the next word as one, shell: keep words after a redirection as arguments of the same command #34901): a child gets both streams on it, and a builtin gets the stream that the flags name. For a path that is as before. A Bun.file(fd) or Response target of an external command got one stream before, and the capture of the other stream was lost.
  • Windows: 2>&1 and 1>&2 of an external command reach a target that is not captured (bun exec, a bun run script, a pipe). Before, the child wrote both streams to a pipe that nothing read, and the output was lost. The 5 cases for it failed on both Windows lanes with the first revision of this PR, which gave the child the stdio that main gives it. They pass now.

Measurements (release builds of main 9bcbf1e and of this change on it, Linux x64. The branch was rebased after that, and three later changes are measured apart, below the table.)

per command, bun script.sh mallocs (main -> PR) instructions in bun_runtime::shell::* (main -> PR)
true 5 -> 5 2,399 -> 2,240
echo hi > f 16 -> 15 4,815 -> 4,675
echo hi 2>&1 11 -> 11 3,844 -> 3,691
/bin/true 14 -> 14 7,207 -> 7,384
/bin/true 2>&1 14 -> 14 7,212 -> 7,400
/bin/true > f 18 -> 16 8,085 -> 8,238
/bin/true < f 18 -> 16 8,084 -> 8,226
  • mallocs: gdb breakpoints on mi_*, difference of 40 and 20 commands. Under Bun.$, /bin/true has 197.6 -> 197.3 (mean of 3 runs, noise 1), a builtin with > ${buf} has 187.1 -> 188.1 (one box for the pinned buffer) and an external command with > ${buf} has 201.5 -> 202.0 (noise).
  • instructions: qemu-user, one log line per executed instruction, difference of 40 and 20 commands, the same count on every run. /bin/true > f also runs 107 fewer in the allocator. The process runs about 63,000 instructions per /bin/true. The 177 more for /bin/true are the IO to CmdIO conversion in Cmd::init (48), the stdio conversion that is no longer inlined (80) and enum drop glue. valgrind, perf and strace are not in the build container (no package access, no PMU), so cachegrind numbers are missing.
  • syscalls per command in the shell process (gdb catch syscall): no difference for each command in the table, and for Bun.$ /bin/true and /bin/true 2>&1 with and without .quiet() (socketpair 2 -> 2 and 1 -> 1).
  • sizes in bytes (gdb on DWARF): IO 56 -> 56, Cmd 176 -> 168, Node 176 -> 176, Builtin 328 -> 96, out stream 80 (BuiltinIO) -> 24 (CmdOut).
  • release text: -4,608 bytes (size). Cmd::transition_to_exec 22,557 -> 20,678 bytes.
  • Changes after the table, on the debug build of the final head (gdb catch syscall, difference of 40 and 20 commands). The POSIX path of a command that starts is as measured, except for a Bun.file(fd) target.
    • The changed path, nosuch 2> f: 4 syscalls that main does not make (openat, fstat, ioctl for the tty test, close) and 3 mallocs more. The 1 write goes to f. nosuch &> f has the same syscalls. nosuch and nosuch 2>&1 have the syscalls of main (17 newfstatat, 1 write).
    • An external command with a Bun.file(fd) target: 1 fcntl (the copy of the fd) and 1 close more than before that change (/bin/true > ${Bun.file(fd)}: fcntl 5 -> 6, close 4 -> 5). A builtin with that target: fcntl 3 -> 2.
    • Open fds before and after 200 commands of each shape (/bin/true, echo hi and nosuch with >, 2>, &> to Bun.file(fd), to a path, to an fd that is not open, to a rejected Response): 7 / 7.

Tests

  • 38 of the 76 new cases in bunshell.test.ts fail on main. The others are 2>&1, 1>&2, 2>> and &> on commands that run, in each place that gives a command a different stdout and stderr: top level, .quiet(), a pipeline, $(...), bun run script.sh, and after a builtin wrote to the stream. They pass on main on Linux and guard the rewrite.
  • file-io.test.ts: the shell's message waits for a FIFO that is full. With a writer that is not polled the test times out. I built that variant and ran it.
  • bunshell.test.ts, "a redirect in place of a pipe": two cases for the pipe end that closes at the redirect. Both fail on main.
  • leak.test.ts has two fd-leak cases for the new path. shell-worker-terminate-leak.test.ts reads /proc/self/fd after the close event of the worker: the redirect fd has no heap box now, so a leak checker does not see it.
  • Windows code did not run here. On the Windows lanes bunshell.test.ts has 512 pass and 0 fail, with the batch-file case, the pipe cases and the 2>&1 cases. The case for a Bun.file(fd) that is not open is skipped there.
  • cargo check passes for x86_64-pc-windows-msvc and aarch64-apple-darwin. clippy is clean for bun_runtime.

Self-review

  • Before the PR, a review asked for four things: every behaviour change listed and tested, the measured numbers, the open PRs on the same lines named, and an order against shell: remove unsafe from the interpreter, state nodes, IOWriter/IOReader and Builtin #40228 and shell: record the last command substitution status per command and expand words first #45074. They are in this body. It found one regression in an earlier state of the branch: a builtin with 2>&1 ${buffer} sent both streams to the buffer and stdout was lost. That is why the exec form decides the streams for a target after 2>&1.
  • Two later reviews of the implementation raised 18 concerns.
  • 9 are addressed:
    • A builtin left O_NONBLOCK on the caller's Bun.file(fd) (3 concerns). The command now writes to a plain copy of the fd.
    • A Bun.file(fd) that is not open was a message for a builtin and a thrown error for the other commands. It is one redirect failure now.
    • A rejected Response lost its body (2 concerns), and a stream body was read before the rejection. The body is taken only when it is a file.
    • One test row accepted any rejection. It now requires the stream in the message.
    • Windows: 2>&1 after a builtin wrote to the pipe of a compound pipeline stage made a pipe that nothing read. stderr now goes where stdout goes.
  • 7 did not hold as defects of this change. 6 are behaviour that main has too (last bullet). 1 is the target after 2>&1, which is in the list above.
  • 2 are not addressed:
    • A builtin that writes more than a blocking FIFO holds to Bun.file(fd) blocks the thread in write(2) until the reader drains it. The shell's own stdout has the same limit on main: with bun big.mjs > fifo and a reader that starts after 2 s, a 100 ms timer fires after 1,985 ms. The cause is write_to_blocking_pipe (src/io/PipeWriter.rs), which this PR does not touch. The other choice, O_NONBLOCK on the copy, changes the fd of the caller.
    • Windows: a Bun.file(fd) that is not open is reported as Too many open files, not Bad file descriptor. The Windows bun_sys::dup duplicates a pseudo-handle for such an fd (from reading the code).
  • The review comments on this PR found the pipe end that closes at the redirect (kept, listed and tested), the blocking write of the message to a full FIFO (fixed and tested), the message that was lost when the copy of an fd failed (no copy is made now) and a test timeout (removed).
  • Open: the design is larger than the ask. CmdIO replaces BuiltinIO, and 16 builtins read Cmd.io. No maintainer has agreed to that yet. The alternative is a patch in the three arms only.
  • The syntax 2>&1 target has no test here on purpose: shell: keep words after a redirection as arguments of the same command #34901 changes what the parser does with it.
  • The same on main and not changed here. .quiet() drops what a command substitution writes to stderr: echo "[$(ls nosuch)]" has an empty stderr with .quiet() (run on Linux). From reading only: on Windows an external command after a builtin in one pipeline stage writes to the stdout of the process, not to the pipe, and the Dup2 path of the Windows spawn leaks one uv::Pipe allocation for each captured 2>&1.

How to read the diff

  • The behaviour is in three places: the call of Cmd::apply_redirect at the top of Cmd::transition_to_exec, CmdOut::make_writable (the stderr set up for a child becomes writable for the shell's message), and the rule in Cmd::on_io_writer_chunk for a write that fails.
  • The rest moves code: Builtin::init_redirections and Cmd::init_subproc_redirections become Cmd::redirect_to_path and Cmd::redirect_to_js_object, BuiltinIO becomes CmdOut in IO.rs, and the builtins read interp.as_cmd(cmd).io in place of Builtin::of(interp, cmd).

Walkthrough

The shell runtime now stores command streams in CmdIO and applies redirects before builtin execution or subprocess spawning. Builtins use command-owned streams. Tests cover redirect routing, setup and execution failures, and file-descriptor cleanup.

Changes

Shell command redirection and I/O

Layer / File(s) Summary
Command stream model
src/runtime/shell/IO.rs, src/runtime/shell/interpreter.rs, src/runtime/shell/mod.rs, src/shell_parser/parse.rs, src/runtime/webcore/Body.rs, src/runtime/shell/subproc.rs
CmdIO and its stream variants represent inherited streams and redirect targets. The runtime adds JS-object lookup and child-stdio conversion, and removes the IoKind redirect helper and an obsolete body-value helper.
Redirect application and command startup
src/runtime/shell/states/Cmd.rs, src/runtime/shell/IO.rs, test/js/bun/shell/bunshell.test.ts, test/js/bun/shell/exec.test.ts, test/js/bun/shell/file-io.test.ts
Cmd applies redirects before command lookup or startup. Path, duplicate-stream, and JS-object redirects configure builtin or child streams. Tests cover redirect routing, setup errors, and diagnostics for commands that fail to start.
Builtin command I/O
src/runtime/shell/Builtin.rs, src/runtime/shell/builtin/*
Builtin no longer stores separate streams. Builtin initialization, input reads, and output writes use Cmd.io; existing builtin output and error flows otherwise remain in place.
Output capture and resource cleanup
src/runtime/shell/states/Cmd.rs, src/runtime/shell/IO.rs, test/js/bun/shell/leak.test.ts, test/js/bun/shell/shell-worker-terminate-leak.test.ts
Output closing captures through the configured command stream. Finalization defuses pins, and redirect-fd ownership cleanup is removed. Tests check descriptor cleanup after repeated failures and worker termination.

Nothing blocking. The comments below are optional suggestions. There is no need to push a fix for them before merging.

Beyond the inline findings, I also checked the stderr_redirected gate in Cmd::on_io_writer_chunk (src/runtime/shell/states/Cmd.rs:388): a failed write of the shell's own message to a redirect target finishing with exit 1 and no throw is the behaviour the PR description states, and the inherited-stderr case still throws as before. I also traced 2>&1 / 1>&2 through CmdOut::dup and is_same_stream into Stdio::Dup2 for the spawn form (src/runtime/shell/IO.rs:222) — both the Fd and captured Buf cases map to one stream, so that path is consistent.

Extended reasoning...

The change replaces the shell's two per-exec-form redirect appliers with a single Cmd::apply_redirect that runs before builtin lookup and PATH search, introduces CmdIO/CmdIn/CmdOut in IO.rs, and mechanically updates 16 builtins plus the spawn path; it touches fd ownership and IOWriter lifetimes but no auth, crypto or injection surface. Three confirmed inline findings (fd-limit message loss, blocking write in make_writable, and pipeline stdin overwrite causing SIGPIPE) already signal a human look is needed; this note only records what else was examined and ruled out.

A command now performs its redirect on its own streams in one step,
Cmd::apply_redirect, before builtin lookup and the PATH search. A
builtin, the spawn of a child process and the shell's own messages
about the command all use those streams.

The message about a command that does not start (not found, a refused
batch-file argument, a failed spawn) now goes where the redirect sends
stderr, and the redirect target is made. A redirect that fails is
reported and the command is not searched for. A command with no name
still performs its redirect.

Builtin::init_redirections, Cmd::init_subproc_redirections, CowFd,
BuiltinIO, BuiltinInput and RedirectFlags::redirects_elsewhere are
gone.
- `2>&1` and `1>&2` of an external command on Windows: when the stream
  is an fd, the child gets that fd on both streams. `Dup2` there is a
  pipe that only a captured stream reads, so the output was lost under
  `bun exec` and in a pipeline. A shell writer whose fd libuv took over
  names the stream of the process that it is on.
- A `Bun.file(fd)` target: the command gets a copy of the fd when the
  redirect is applied, for a builtin and for a child. An fd that is not
  open is a redirect that fails. A builtin no longer sets O_NONBLOCK on
  the fd of the caller.
- The message about a command that does not start: the writer on the
  target waits for a FIFO, a socket or a tty with a poll. `&> file`
  gives stderr the file, so the message needs no copy of the fd.
- A `Response` that a redirect rejects keeps its body.
- Tests: a redirect in place of a pipe closes the shell's end of the
  pipe when it is applied. The worker fd test waits for the `close`
  event of the worker and has no timeout.

…r makes an unread pipe

- A `Response` target is a file only when its body is a file `Blob`. The
  body is not converted first, so a stream body that is rejected is not
  read.
- Windows: after `2>&1`, a child whose stdout is inherited gets the
  stdout of the process on stderr too. `Dup2` there made a pipe that

No high-confidence issues detected in this change.

The log in Cmd::buffered_output_close repeated the match of
subproc::out_kind_str. It calls that function now.

Nothing blocking. The comments below are optional suggestions. There is no need to push a fix for them before merging.

Beyond the inline findings, I also checked the error paths of the new Cmd::apply_redirect / redirect_to_path / open_writer / redirect_to_js_object in src/runtime/shell/states/Cmd.rs for leaked fds or pins: every opened fd, dup, IOReader, IOWriter and pinned buffer is moved into an owning Redirected field (or bun_sys::File) before the next fallible step, so an Err return drops it rather than leaking it.

Extended reasoning...

The change replaces the per-builtin and per-spawn redirect setup in the Bun shell with a single apply_redirect step on Cmd, introducing CmdIO/CmdIn/CmdOut in IO.rs and touching every builtin plus Cmd.rs, interpreter.rs and subproc.rs; it touches no auth, crypto or injection surface. Two inline findings are posted; the acquisition/release audit of the new redirect code that REVIEW.md asks for found the owned handles held in Redirected on each early return.

🟣 pre-existing, not blocking: pre-existing: a script running a builtin with < ${Bun.file(fd)} or < ${new Response(Bun.file(path))} gets empty input and exit 0, while an external command reads the file. The Builtin arms at Cmd.rs:952-955 wrap the file-backed blob in CmdIn::Blob, and Builtin.rs:350 reads it with shared_view(), which is empty for a file store. Fix: for the Builtin form, resolve a file-backed Blob or Response body with blob_file() as the output side does, and open it like < path (BlobFile::Path) or dup the fd into an IOReader (BlobFile::Fd), keeping CmdIn::Blob for in-memory blobs only; the Spawn form at Cmd.rs:950 already reads the fd through extract_blob. [also at: src/runtime/shell/states/Cmd.rs:950 - pre-existing: a script running an external command with < ${Bun.file(fd)} still gets no redirect-time check of the fd, unlike >/2> targets, which this PR now validates.]
A small fix can ride a push you are already making; otherwise a short reply is enough.

Why this was flagged

Trigger: $\cat < ${Bun.file(fd)}`or$`cat < ${new Response(Bun.file(path))}``. shell_body.rs:346-374 pushes an fd-backed Blob into jsobjs, so redirect_to_js_object sees JsObject::Blob. Cmd.rs:952 stores CmdIn::Blob(blob.dupe()) and Cmd.rs:954 stores CmdIn::Blob(body.use_()). CmdIn::needs_io is false for Blob (IO.rs), so cat.rs:138-153 calls Builtin::read_stdin_no_io, which at Builtin.rs:350 returns blob.shared_view(); Blob.rs:2343-2358 returns an empty slice for every store that is not Data::Bytes, so cat writes nothing and finishes with exit 0. The Spawn form of the same redirect (Cmd.rs:950 CmdIn::Js, stdio.rs:605 Stdio::Fd(store_fd)) hands the child the fd and the file is read. The base branch had the same BuiltinInput::Blob behaviour, so this is pre-existing; the PR fixed the output sibling (via blob_file at Cmd.rs:996-1011) and left the stdin sibling failing silently with no test.

Verification: pre-existing — triggered whenever a builtin gets < ${Bun.file(fd)} or < ${new Response(Bun.file(path))}. src/runtime/shell/states/Cmd.rs:952 stores CmdIn::Blob(Box::new(blob.dupe())) for ExecForm::Builtin; src/runtime/shell/Builtin.rs:350 does CmdIn::Blob(blob) => blob.shared_view(), which returns &[] for every file-backed store. The builtin therefore writes nothing and exits 0. The base branch fails by the same route. No test in test/js/bun/shell covers this.

🟣 pre-existing, not blocking: pre-existing: a script using cmd &> ${buffer} gets stderr text written over its stdout text in the buffer, because each stream starts at offset 0. In Cmd.rs:966-973 a builtin with &> to an ArrayBuffer gets two ArrayBufSink { buf: pin()?, i: 0 } sinks with independent cursors on one buffer, and the spawn form at IO.rs pins redirect_stdout and redirect_stderr separately with the same effect. Fix: when both streams target one ArrayBuffer, share a single cursor (one sink referenced by both streams, or one pinned buffer with a shared offset) for the builtin and the spawn form alike. The base branch behaved the same; this PR rewrote the site and annotated it as intended without a test for the two-stream case.
A small fix can ride a push you are already making; otherwise a short reply is enough.

Why this was flagged

Trigger: $\ls existing missing &> ${buf}`or any builtin or external command that writes to both stdout and stderr with&> ${arraybuffer}. For ExecForm::Builtin, src/runtime/shell/states/Cmd.rs:968 and Cmd.rs:972 create two ArrayBufSink values, each with i: 0, over the same pinned buffer; CmdOut::write_no_io_to (src/runtime/shell/IO.rs) advances only its own sink's i, so the second stream's bytes overwrite the first stream's bytes from offset 0. For ExecForm::Spawn, CmdOut::JsBuf is dup'd into both streams (Cmd.rs:964) and CmdOut::to_subproc_stdio pins redirect_stdoutandredirect_stderrseparately. The user reads a buffer whose contents interleave by overwrite rather than append, so output is lost. The base branch did the same, so this is pre-existing; the comment at Cmd.rs:966 records it as deliberate but no test in test/js/bun/shell exercises&> ${buffer}` with both streams producing output.

Verification: pre-existing — triggered whenever a command that writes to both stdout and stderr is run with &> ${arrayBuffer}. src/runtime/shell/states/Cmd.rs:966-973 creates two ArrayBufSink { buf: pin()?, i: 0 }, and CmdOut::write_no_io_to advances only sink.i, so the second stream's bytes land at offset 0. The base branch does the identical thing. No test in test/js/bun/shell covers &> ${arrayBuffer}.

### What does this PR do?

Hardening. This collects the open pull requests that fix a crash in Bun
into one change, and fixes about 20 more crashes that had no pull
request.

"Crash" here means a segfault, a Rust panic, an abort, a failed
assertion, memory corruption that a sanitizer reports, a native stack
overflow, or an exception that ends the process and that the program
can't catch. With this PR those cases throw a normal error, print a
normal CLI error and exit 1, or just work.

306 pull requests are included: 227 whole, and 79 cut down to the crash
fix where the rest was a refactor, a feature or a behavior change. Each
one was checked against current `main` first. 45 more turned out to be
fixed already, and 17 were duplicates. The full list is at the bottom.

#### Crashes you could hit in normal use

- **`bun build` with macros and a `.env` file crashed at random.** In a
repro with many macro modules, more than a third of the builds crashed.
Now 3,000 of 3,000 produce the right bundle. (#45960)
- **`bun run` and `bunx` aborted if a signal arrived while the child was
being spawned.** (#38926, #45965)
- **`bun build --compile ./index.js ./public/*` panicked** if an
embedded file's name wasn't valid UTF-8.
- **A truncated or corrupted compiled executable** died with SIGBUS or a
panic at startup. It now prints an error. (#31787, #38251, #41360)
- **Dev server:** several `Option::unwrap()` panics after a failed or
deleted import (#38046, #44744, #44746), a segfault when an `onLoad`
plugin throws while another bundle is queued, a request that hung and
then panicked with `bundle active`, and `server.stop()` that never
resolved after a client aborted a waiting request.
- **`Bun.serve`:** `server.fetch(url, { headers: new Headers() })`
followed by a GC segfaulted (#40888). Routes were used after free after
`server.reload()` with `tls.serverName` (#38636).
- **`text()` and `json()` on a stream of string chunks** could abort the
process, a regression in 1.4.0. (#44269)
- **`Bun.Transpiler` with `exports.eliminate` or `exports.replace`**
aborted on `export default 1` and on most re-export clauses. (#44137)
- **A decorated `declare` field in a class expression** with
`experimentalDecorators` panicked. (#38095)
- **YAML and JSON5 files with a key that isn't a string** panicked with
`--no-bundle` and in `Bun.Transpiler`. (#41827)
- **`Bun.FileSystemRouter`:** reading `.params` segfaulted when a
rejected route candidate left its parameters behind. (#39290, #39291)
- **Native addons that call `uv_async_*`, `uv_timer_*`, `uv_idle_*`,
`uv_prepare_*`, `uv_check_*`, `uv_queue_work` or `uv_cwd`** aborted with
"unsupported uv function" on Linux and macOS. They're implemented now.
(#36609, #39652, #39892)
- **`--watch` and `--hot`** panicked when the system was out of inotify
instances or file descriptors, or when the reload `exec` failed. They
print an error now. (#39629, #39975, #44837)
- **Paths longer than the path buffer** panicked in `bun install`, the
resolver, the bundler, `--compile`, `tsconfig.json` `paths` and
`baseUrl`, `package.json` `main` and `sideEffects`, `bun run --filter`,
`bun pm diff`, source maps and snapshots. They're ordinary errors now,
or they work. (#36340, #37529, #39104, #39650, #43067)
- **A Worker that creates a `ShadowRealm` and imports
`node:worker_threads` in it** segfaulted.
- **`structuredClone` or `postMessage` of an X25519 key** gave an object
that aborted the process when read. (#45624)
- **`node:stream` web adapters and `node:http2`** could end the process
with an exception that no handler could catch. (#45076, #45975)
- **Windows:** a watcher panic in a burst of file changes (#44344), a
segfault after the machine resumes from sleep (#33015), crashes in the
shell's pipe reader (#39638, #43606), and addons that import from
`node.exe` without the delay-load hook (#35618).

Most of the rest needs unusual input: strings near the 2 GiB limit,
buffers that another thread or a getter resizes or detaches in the
middle of a call, `worker.terminate()` at a bad moment, running out of
memory or file descriptors, very deep nesting, or hostile arguments to
`bun:ffi`, `node:vm` and `bun:sqlite`.

#### Behavior changes

Things that didn't crash before and behave differently now:

- `new` on native functions that aren't constructors throws a
`TypeError`, as in Node: `util.types.*`, `buffer.isAscii`, `isUtf8`,
`transcode`, `resolveObjectURL`, `bun:jsc` exports, `cc()` symbols. It
used to return the call's result. They also stop printing as `[class
hostname]`. (#34575)
- `` $`cmd` `` throws `ERR_INVALID_ARG_VALUE` if an environment
variable's name or value contains a NUL byte. It used to cut the value
at the NUL. (#44981)
- `cc()` functions throw a `TypeError` for arguments that used to reach
C as garbage, and `read.*(ptr, NaN)` throws. (#37989, #38057, #40773)
- As PID 1, `bun` exits with 128 + the signal number on Ctrl+C or
`docker stop`. (#38877)
- A `NODE_MODULE` addon that's already loaded by the main thread throws
`ERR_DLOPEN_FAILED` when a live Worker loads it too, as in Node.
(#39968)
- An exception from a `node:vm` context reaches `uncaughtException`
handlers. (#39992) `vm.constants.DONT_CONTEXTIFY` returns the real
global proxy. (#34623)
- `createPrivateKey` rejects an EC JWK whose private value doesn't match
its public point. (#33752)
- `@dec static {}` is a syntax error, as in TypeScript and esbuild.
(#44883)
- `clearTimeout` ignores 0 and negative ids, and timer ids no longer
wrap. (#44771)
- HEAD for a `Response` whose body is an S3-backed `Blob` reports the
length that GET sends. (#44734)
- `bun:sqlite` and `node:sqlite`: if `iterate()` left a write unfinished
on a connection that has a hook, a user function or an authorizer, the
write is finished on the connection's next call instead of during
garbage collection. If the database is gone too, it's rolled back.
- `bun test --bail` runs exit listeners and closes SQLite databases.
(#39010)
- Dev server: a request for a client script waits while a bundle is in
flight (#42733), query strings reach framework routes (#33232), and a
request gets a 500 instead of hanging when plugins fail (#36812).

#### File formats

- `.jsc` bytecode files get a 24-byte footer so they can be verified
before decoding. Files from an older Bun are ignored and the source is
parsed instead. (#39396)
- `node:vm` `cachedData` gets an 8-byte checksum. A blob from an older
Bun is rejected, which the API allows. (#32839)
- The built-in modules section of a compiled executable changes from
format 1 to 2 and carries an engine stamp. (#44907)

#### Performance

Measured in instructions per operation on release builds of this branch
and its base, with an A/A run for the noise floor (0.0 to 0.2 %).

No change: `Bun.serve`, `node:http`, WebSocket echo and publish, `bun
build` of 3,807 modules, `bun run` with 2,000 imports, `readdir` /
`Glob` / `fs.cp` over 23,689 entries, startup and RSS. The binary grows
by 176 KB (0.17 %).

| Faster | Instructions |
| --- | --- |
| WebSocket echo of a 1 MB non-ASCII text message | −72 % |
| `Bun.inspect` of a large non-ASCII string | −39 % |
| `Bun.markdown.html` on large non-ASCII input | −33 % |
| `` $`cmd` `` with 300 environment variables | −6 % |
| `fs.readSync` | −5 % |
| `TextEncoder.encodeInto`, short ASCII strings | −4 % |
| async `crypto.pbkdf2`, 16-byte inputs | −17 % |

| Slower | Instructions | Why |
| --- | --- | --- |
| `cc()` calls | +5 to +51 per call | Argument count and type checks,
and a check for `close()` (#37989, #38057, #43802, #44921). `dlopen()`
calls don't change |
| `process.env.X = v` | 38 → 593 per write | Writes aren't cached. Reads
don't change (#38871) |
| async `crypto.pbkdf2`, inputs of 1 KB or more | +4 to +9 % | Password
and salt are copied (#40554) |
| `bun build` with an object `--define` used thousands of times | +4.5 %
| The object is copied per use (#45969) |

#### Not included

- Fixes that need a WebKit change: #39967, #42534, #42982, #43764,
#43786, #44226. #42185 too: a typed array that has no `ArrayBuffer` yet
can't be pinned, so `view.buffer.transfer()` during an async call can
still free its bytes. Creating the `ArrayBuffer` up front costs 7 to 12
% on every async `fs` call, so the fix belongs in JSC: an `ArrayBuffer`
created while the view is borrowed should start out pinned.
- #45442 (`calc()` sums as a flat list): it changes minified output for
real stylesheets to survive a `calc()` with 25,000 terms. It deserves
its own review.
- #40023 (Windows event loop redesign), #29928 (Windows exit path),
#40534, #43963, #39571, #42904, #42834, #36355, #43266: refactors or
features whose crash is already covered or isn't a crash.
- The pull requests marked *(crash fix only)* below should stay open for
their other half.

### How did you verify your code works?

- **Tests.** Every fix has a test that fails on `main` (a release or an
ASAN build) and passes on this branch, except where that isn't
practical: code that only runs on Windows or macOS, inputs that need
several GB of memory, and a few rare races. Those were checked by hand
or by reading.
- **Stored repro scripts.** 230 crash repros ran on release and ASAN
builds of this branch and of `main`, side by side. Release: 88 no longer
crash. ASAN: 106 no longer crash. None crashes that didn't before. What
still crashes needs WebKit, is SQLite's own bug, or isn't a crash. The
ASAN number is from a later commit than the release number.
- **Dev server.** Because one fix makes requests wait, 2,171 generated
programs ran random interleavings of edits, build errors, failing
plugins, reloads, stops and disconnects with about 120,000 requests. No
request hung, was answered twice or got a stale body. `main` hung in 82
of 1,161 programs. This also found the four dev server bugs listed
above.
- **Path helpers.** 336,000 boundary cases with buffers of exactly the
computed size, and 12,003 random calls through 30 JS APIs on an ASAN
build, compared with `main`. No sanitizer report, and the results match
wherever `main` doesn't panic.
- **What worked on 1.4.3 still works.** Reviewers compared behavior with
1.4.3 and took out what changed it: for example an output directory
layout change for 9 or more entry points, a `server.reload()` change,
and a changed error message for `import("file:///50%deposit.ts")`.
- **Not run locally:** the Windows, macOS and FreeBSD code paths. CI
compiles and tests them.
