… catch Dead code elimination can empty a try body. PruneMaybeThrows then removes the catch handler and turns the try terminal into a goto. remove_unnecessary_try_catch removed only the first block of the handler from the predecessors of the fallthrough. A handler of more than one block reaches the fallthrough from its last block, so that stale predecessor stayed and the fallthrough was not merged into the end of the try block. BuildReactiveFunction visits that block only from a try terminal, so every statement after the try statement was dropped. Remove every removed block from the predecessors of the fallthrough. With one predecessor left, a phi of that block can still have the operand of the removed handler, when the catch body assigns a local that is read later. merge_consecutive_blocks asserts on that. Report it before the merge as the invariant error that upstream has there, so the function is skipped. Before, a catch body of one block that assigns such a local aborted the build on that assert.
The reason now carries the operand count, as the invariant in upstream's mergeConsecutiveBlocks and the assert in merge_consecutive_blocks do.

…t-compiler-dead-try-branching-catch
remove_unnecessary_try_catch drops every removed block from the predecessors of the block after the try statement. merge_consecutive_blocks now reports a phi that keeps an operand of the removed handler as an invariant error itself, so the check for it in prune_maybe_throws is gone. Dead code elimination now keeps a load that can throw in a try body. The test uses try bodies in which nothing can throw: a constant, and a check that process.env.NODE_ENV folds away.
Add five functions to the test: a switch case, a useMemo callback, a mutation after the try, a debugger statement in the try body, and a catch with a binding inside an outer try. Add two todo tests for wrong code that this change does not repair: a do-while whose test is unreachable, and an inlined function in a try body that loses its handler.
With the change to remove_unnecessary_try_catch, a function that a removed catch body calls, declared below the try, goes from skipped to compiled. Its memo block then prints a declaration that shadows the outer `let`, so the value is undefined on a cache miss. The same output exists on main without a try, when the early reference is dead code. PruneHoistedContexts now turns that store into an assignment. The open react/react#37834 adds the same line upstream. Add a test for it, two rows for a memo block that spans the try, and a second do-while control. Correct two test comments.
… kept for their throw Since #44805 dead code elimination keeps a reassignment in a `try` that nothing reads, as able to throw, and dependency collection passes over what such an instruction assigns. The declaration stays in an earlier memo block (`ReferenceError: items is not defined`), or the memo block remembers a dependency as it was after the store and returns an older element. - `value_may_throw` says no for a store, so dead code elimination removes it again. - `handle_instruction`: an update or a pattern that is kept for its throw goes on to its own arm, which records what it assigns or declares. - `EnvironmentConfig::reassignments_can_throw` keeps both as they were for the oxlint rules of `bun lint`, whose reports are oxc's.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟠 Major | 🏗️ Heavy lift
Preserve correct renders when removing caught stores.
When this branch removes a caught StoreLocal reassignment, a later render can hit a memo cache and restore a stale let value instead of retaining the value assigned in catch. The PR’s differential run reports two components that rendered correctly on main and render incorrectly with this change. Fix the missing dependency for catch-assigned locals, or leave this shape uncompiled before removing its store. (github.com)

Not repaired in this PR, and stated under Downsides.
The count is now 2 of 24,000 generated components that are right on main and wrong here. Both are older bugs that the kept store hides on main.
One of them: let v = [props.a]; ... try { w += 1; info.n = count(props.m); } catch (e) { v = 2; }. Its memo block gives v back, and nothing compares the value that v comes in with. On main the block never hits its cache, because the kept store spoils its saved dependency. 1.4.3 is wrong for this component too, and for the plain form let v = a; try { work(); } catch (e) { v = 2; }.
I built the repair (a memo block depends on the value that each variable it assigns comes in with). A self-review found that it makes code without a try stale in its simple form, and that it is the rule of #42482. It is a change of its own. The commit is on the branch robobun/14c55e03/memo-block-entry-value.

@robobun Thanks for the clarification. The kept store masks an existing memo-dependency bug on main; removing it exposes the bug in two generated components. I understand that the entry-value dependency fix is separate work, and I will not ask for it in this PR.
The two changed render results remain a known downside of this PR, so I’ll leave this finding open. Would you like me to open a follow-up issue for the fix?

Learning: In Bun's React Compiler, a memo block that assigns a local can return a stale cached value if its dependencies do not include the value that the local has on entry. A retained store can prevent the cache hit and mask this issue; removing that store from a try block can expose it. The entry-value dependency rule is separate work associated with #42482.

No new issue is needed. #42482 is the open PR for that bug, and the commit with the rule is on the branch robobun/14c55e03/memo-block-entry-value for its rework.

@robobun Understood. I won’t open a new issue. #42482 is the existing PR for this bug, and robobun/14c55e03/memo-block-entry-value contains the rule commit for its rework.

Beyond the inline findings, I also checked the get/get_mut(..).unwrap() pair in remove_unnecessary_try_catch (src/react_compiler/hir/cfg_utils.rs) — only contains_key reads sit between them, so the key cannot vanish. The new may_throw_in_a_try helper replaces value_may_throw at both of its caught-instruction call sites in dead_code_elimination.rs, so no sibling site keeps the old rule.
Extended reasoning...
The change touches the Rust React Compiler port (DCE, PruneMaybeThrows, scope-dependency propagation, try/catch CFG cleanup, hoisted-context pruning), the lint compile entry point, and ~1100 lines of bundler tests; it touches no security-sensitive surface. Three confirmed findings on stale memo output, lost lint reports, and dropped caught ReferenceErrors are posted inline, so a human review is needed; the note above records what else was examined.

🟡 (optional) Components that assign a variable in a try before its let in a later case or loop iteration now run past a catch that main entered; the caught ReferenceError disappears from a build. prune_maybe_throws.rs:144-147 now says every StoreLocal/StoreContext cannot throw, so dead_code_elimination.rs:181-188 removes the store and the handler with it when nothing else in the block throws. Main kept the store and, for the switch and loop forms, still threw inside the try so the handler ran. Fix: a Reassign to an identifier whose declaration has not been reached on that path must still count as able to throw (or be kept by may_throw_in_a_try) so the handler stays; gating only on reassignments_can_throw drops it for every build.
Why this was flagged
Trigger: switch (k) { case 1: let x; break; case 2: try { x = 1 } catch (e) { setError(e) } } or a loop body with the store before let x, built with --react-compiler (reassignments_can_throw false at environment_config.rs:175). may_throw_in_a_try (dead_code_elimination.rs:181-188) returns false for the Reassign store, find_referenced_identifiers (:239-242) does not reference it, the store is removed, the block has nothing that throws, and prune_maybe_throws.rs:97-111 nulls the handler; the catch body and its side effects (setError, logging, fallback UI) are gone from the output. The PR's own table says main prints 'caught: x is not defined' for the switch and loop forms where this PR prints 'no throw', and StoreBeforeItsDeclarationThrows at react-compiler.test.ts:3468 is only a todo. The remedy is to keep the store (and so the handler) when the lvalue's declaration is not dominated by the store, which value_may_throw_when_pruning at :123-128 already does for the pruning side.
Verification: prune_maybe_throws.rs:145-147 now returns false for every StoreLocal/StoreContext. may_throw_in_a_try (dead_code_elimination.rs:181-189) returns false for the store when the flag is off, so find_referenced_identifiers (:240-243) no longer keeps it. In prune_maybe_throws_impl (prune_maybe_throws.rs:97-111) *handler = None and the catch is deleted. On the base, the store was kept, threw and the handler ran.

The PR body states this, with a table and a todo test (StoreBeforeItsDeclarationThrows).
The kept store did not keep that throw in the plain form. { try { x = 1 } catch ... let x; } builds to try { let x = 1; } on main: no throw. main has the throw for the switch form for another reason: it prints each case as a block, so x = 1 is outside the block of let x, and strict mode throws x is not defined. It leaves the loop form as written. 1.4.3 and babel-plugin-react-compiler 1.0.0 have no throw in any of these forms.
A rule by dominance needs a dominator tree in dead code elimination, and what main prints for these forms is not the dead-zone error either. I left it out. A pattern in such a place is not changed by this PR.

… in a `try` only for a throw A pattern or a store that reassigns, and stays in a `try` for a throw, became an output of its memo block. The block then gave the variable back on a path that did not assign it: `[label] = next` in a `try` on a path that returns was `draft | draft | draft`, where main is `draft | saved | draft`. Left out of the account of the memo blocks, as #44805 has it, such a write loses its declaration or spoils a saved dependency. - In a client build, a function that holds an update, or a store or a pattern that reassigns, only for a throw is left as written. What a pattern declares is still recorded. - A store that only what is kept for its throw reads is kept for a throw too: `find_semantic_only_caught_instructions` takes it again. - `bun lint` keeps the rule of #44805 in both flavors, so its reports do not change. - The branch no longer holds the change of #43603 to `remove_unnecessary_try_catch`. Since #46021 a function is left as written when the body of a `try` cannot throw and its handler has more than one block. One line of #43603 stays: a memo block assigns a function that is declared behind the `try`.
