Problem

  • The first JSX spread of an object define empties it: each other use of OBJ prints {}, in every file and call. A 160-file Bun.build crashes in 6 of 100 runs (ASAN: SEGV src/ast/g.rs:237 in <bun_ast::g::PropertyKind as PartialEq>::eq).
  • P::value_for_define (src/js_parser/p.rs:7131) put the node of the define table into each AST. For <div {...OBJ} /> the visitor takes the property list of the spread object as the props (src/js_parser/visit/visit_expr.rs:585). A macro result in a const is emptied the same way.

Fix

  • DefineData::value_for_use copies an object or array per use, as for a string. value is private, and a debug assertion checks it.
  • The visitor copies the list of the spread object.
  • Transpiler cache version 36 to 37: old entries can hold {}.
  • Verified: 12 new tests in 5 files fail on main. Self-reviewed: 23 concerns raised, 20 addressed. Rejected: the macro trim rewrite and a two-PR split (Notes).

Background

  • A define value is parsed once into AST nodes that all bundler threads share. The visitor edits AST nodes in place.
  • Considered: a copy only at the spread. The table node stays in each AST, and import.meta.hot.accept(DEPS) writes to it too.
  • Considered: one var per module (bundler: hoist object/array --define values to a shared var #35958). It changes the output.

Downsides

  • A use of an object or array define costs about 210 B per string property until the build ends: peak RSS 40 to 126 MB and Bun.build 17 to 66 ms for 2,000 uses of 200 keys.
  • <X {...{ a, b }} /> costs 1 more allocation and 75 more instructions.
  • Each transpiler cache entry is built again once.
Notes

No issue. No user reported this bug, so there is no Fixes line. #44222 lists it as "needs its own fix". This PR does not change what a define prints, and it does not choose between an inline literal, a folded member (#21312) and a hoisted var (#35958, closed as stale).

History. The Zig visitor copied the list header (.properties = props.*), so a spread with no child did not empty the define. The Rust rewrite (#30412) turned the copy into a take. The push of children into the list of the spread object is older.

Measurements. Release builds for linux x64 of main (017b2439a) and of this branch (77d7d45f3), same toolchain, same machine. The branch was rebased on main after that. The only change to this diff is the cache version number.

Bun.build, one object define CONFIG, median of 9 interleaved runs (main / branch):

case peak RSS Bun.build CPU output
100 files x 20 uses x 200 keys 39.8 / 125.9 MB 17 / 66 ms 34 / 143 ms same, 261,719 B
the same, 40 uses 45.1 / 212.9 MB 21 / 93 ms 45 / 196 ms same
the same, 400 keys 40.2 / 202.5 MB 19 / 127 ms 37 / 191 ms same
20 uses in functions that nothing calls 39.8 / 126.8 MB 15 / 68 ms 30 / 143 ms same, 3,709 B
20 reads of CONFIG.kN 50.9 / 136.5 MB 38 / 94 ms 62 / 145 ms same, 5,199,387 B
200 files x 5 uses x 10 keys 37.8 / 40.0 MB 12 / 16 ms 29 / 32 ms same
the 200-key text as a string define 39.6 / 39.6 MB 13 / 14 ms 29 / 27 ms same

A second run of main differed from the first by at most 1.6 MB, 3 ms and 8 ms.

  • 160 files with 640 uses of an 8.5 KB define and no JSX, 20 interleaved runs: wall 57.7 to 88.1 ms (noise 2.4 ms), peak RSS 50.5 to 92.7 MB (noise 0.3 MB).
  • One use of a define with 10 string properties: 22 allocations and 1,960 B (21 nodes of 40 B in the AST store, one list of 1,120 B from mimalloc). main: 0. Counted with gdb breakpoints over 1,000 uses.
  • Uses that are never printed: 1,001 copies for 1 printed literal behind a dead NODE_ENV check, and 1,000 for 1 in a 1,000-export barrel.
  • Define substitution, instructions from the call site to the result (objdump): identifier value 43 to 21 (value_for_define is inlined now), string value 67 to 67, number or boolean value 38 to 40. There is no jump table.
  • e_jsx_element, instructions for one element with calls stepped over (gdb): <div a={1} /> 269 to 257, with a child 334 to 324, <div {...x} b={2} /> 279 to 267, <div {...{a:1,b:2}} /> 269 to 344.
  • mimalloc calls for 10,000 elements: <div a={1} /> 61,153 on both builds, <div {...{a:1,b:2}} /> 81,253 to 91,253.
  • Binary: .text 81,368,037 to 81,372,389 B (+4,352). .rodata and .data are the same. New code: value_for_use 307 B, clone_literal_tree 666 B, own_literal_node 1,450 B, Property::shallow_clone 756 B. e_jsx_element 4,216 to 4,587 B in each of its 2 copies.
  • size_of::<DefineData>() is 32 B. Its fields did not change.
  • Deep defines (--define FOO=[[[...]]]): a build passes up to depth 6,984 on both builds, and the JSON depth error starts at about 7,575 on both. Nested objects: 5,131 and about 7,056 on both. Debug builds: 283 and 598 on both. The copier uses a work list and has no call to itself, so a deep define meets no new stack limit on a pool thread.
  • Cache: the branch did not read an entry that main wrote, and wrote the entry again with its own version. The versions were 35 and 36 at the time of this measurement.
  • The 160-file build with JSX spreads, 100 runs on the release builds: main has 6 crashes (panic: Segmentation fault at address 0x70) and wrong output in the other 94 runs (about 344 KB for a 2,120,604 B bundle). The branch has 0 crashes and one output. Debug builds with ASAN: main crashes in 7 of 30 runs, the branch in 0 of 130.

What pins each part. With the object copy removed, the debug assertion stops the Bun.Transpiler tests (panic: a use of a define got a node of the define table). With the collapse copy removed, the 2 macro tests fail and the define tests pass. The hot.accept test fails when value_for_use returns the array of the table (Initial: 1 ["counter.ts"]). The object copy changes no output by itself: it is there so that the unsafe impl Sync for DefineData holds.

Left open, same on main.

Other PRs. #44222 merges with this branch in the two orders with no conflict. #44467 adds a comment that says a revisit can be inside a define value that parses share, which is not true after this PR. #40857 adds callers of value_for_define, and they get the copy. main took cache version 36 in #45677 after this PR opened, so this PR uses 37. Other open PRs also bump the version, so the number can move again.

Deleted with this change. The SyncDefineData wrapper in defines_table.rs (DefineData is Send and Sync itself), pub on the fields of DefineData and on Flags, the Flags re-export of bun_bundler::defines, and two comments that were not true.

Not added. A Rust unit test for the copier. The debug assertion in value_for_use checks each copy that the tests make.

Suites run. Debug build: transpiler.test.js (244), bundler_jsx.test.ts (66), macro-test.test.ts (30), bake/dev/hot.test.ts (12), transpiler-cache.test.ts (21), react-compiler.test.ts (116), esbuild/extra.test.ts (222), bundler_minify.test.ts (65), runtime-transpiler.test.ts, bundler_env.test.ts. Release build of the branch, for files that time out on a debug build: jsx-production.test.ts (32), esbuild/default.test.ts (155), cli.test.ts (39), bun-build-api.test.ts (75), bundler_edgecase.test.ts (181, and one timeout that passes alone on both builds).

Status: closed. #46021 merged this fix, so this PR is not needed.

#46021 took the copy of an object or array define for each use, the copy of the list of a lone JSX spread object, the transpiler cache version and the tests.

Checked on main at 963452075e with a debug build that has ASAN:

const t = new Bun.Transpiler({ loader: "jsx", define: { OBJ: '{"a":1}' } });
const src = "export const a = <div {...OBJ} />; export const b = OBJ;";
console.log(t.transformSync(src)); // b = { a: 1 }
console.log(t.transformSync(src)); // props { a: 1 } and b = { a: 1 }
  • bun build --external '*' --define 'OBJ={"a":1,"b":2}' ./jsx2.jsx prints { a: 1, b: 2 } for the use before the spread and for the use after it.
  • A Bun.build of 160 files that spread large object defines gives one output in 15 runs, with no crash.

Walkthrough

Define values now provide copied string, object, and array literals per use. JSX spread processing clones property lists rather than modifying nested object properties. Regression tests cover bundling, transforms, hot updates, and transpiler cache reuse.

Changes

Define Literal Ownership and JSX Spreads

Layer / File(s) Summary
Define value access
src/ast/expr.rs, src/js_parser/lib.rs, src/bundler/defines.rs, src/js_parser/defines_table.rs, src/bundler/options.rs, src/bundler/transpiler.rs
Expression helpers copy and compare literal trees. DefineData fields become private and it gains accessors for identifiers, per-use values, and strings. Define parsing and related consumers use the updated access paths.
Define substitution and JSX spread processing
src/ast/g.rs, src/js_parser/p.rs, src/js_parser/visit/visit_expr.rs
Define substitution uses the new accessors. JSX spread processing clones property lists rather than mutating the nested object’s list. Property::shallow_clone allocates a separate decorators vector.
Regression coverage and cache version
src/jsc/RuntimeTranspilerCache.rs, test/bundler/*, test/bake/dev/hot.test.ts, test/cli/run/transpiler-cache.test.ts
The transpiler cache version changes to 36. Tests cover JSX spreads of object and array defines, repeated and concurrent transforms, hot updates, macro results, and cache reuse.

…f a lone JSX spread object

A use of an object or array define got the node of the define table. The
automatic JSX runtime took the property list of a lone spread object, so
one `<div {...OBJ} />` left the define empty for every other use, file
and thread.

DefineData::value_for_use now returns a copy of a string, object or
array value, and the value field is private. The JSX collapse copies the
list of the spread object, which a const that holds a macro result can
share with other uses.
…pub surface

- DefineData::value_for_use asserts in debug builds that the value it
returns shares no string, object or array node with the define table.
- DefineData's fields and Flags are no longer public, and the
SyncDefineData wrapper is gone: DefineData is Send and Sync itself.
- The concurrent transform() test uses 200 spreads, which crashes a
  build without the fix.
- Comments are one line each.

### What does this PR do?

Hardening. This collects the open pull requests that fix a crash in Bun
into one change, and fixes about 20 more crashes that had no pull
request.

"Crash" here means a segfault, a Rust panic, an abort, a failed
assertion, memory corruption that a sanitizer reports, a native stack
overflow, or an exception that ends the process and that the program
can't catch. With this PR those cases throw a normal error, print a
normal CLI error and exit 1, or just work.

306 pull requests are included: 227 whole, and 79 cut down to the crash
fix where the rest was a refactor, a feature or a behavior change. Each
one was checked against current `main` first. 45 more turned out to be
fixed already, and 17 were duplicates. The full list is at the bottom.

#### Crashes you could hit in normal use

- **`bun build` with macros and a `.env` file crashed at random.** In a
repro with many macro modules, more than a third of the builds crashed.
Now 3,000 of 3,000 produce the right bundle. (#45960)
- **`bun run` and `bunx` aborted if a signal arrived while the child was
being spawned.** (#38926, #45965)
- **`bun build --compile ./index.js ./public/*` panicked** if an
embedded file's name wasn't valid UTF-8.
- **A truncated or corrupted compiled executable** died with SIGBUS or a
panic at startup. It now prints an error. (#31787, #38251, #41360)
- **Dev server:** several `Option::unwrap()` panics after a failed or
deleted import (#38046, #44744, #44746), a segfault when an `onLoad`
plugin throws while another bundle is queued, a request that hung and
then panicked with `bundle active`, and `server.stop()` that never
resolved after a client aborted a waiting request.
- **`Bun.serve`:** `server.fetch(url, { headers: new Headers() })`
followed by a GC segfaulted (#40888). Routes were used after free after
`server.reload()` with `tls.serverName` (#38636).
- **`text()` and `json()` on a stream of string chunks** could abort the
process, a regression in 1.4.0. (#44269)
- **`Bun.Transpiler` with `exports.eliminate` or `exports.replace`**
aborted on `export default 1` and on most re-export clauses. (#44137)
- **A decorated `declare` field in a class expression** with
`experimentalDecorators` panicked. (#38095)
- **YAML and JSON5 files with a key that isn't a string** panicked with
`--no-bundle` and in `Bun.Transpiler`. (#41827)
- **`Bun.FileSystemRouter`:** reading `.params` segfaulted when a
rejected route candidate left its parameters behind. (#39290, #39291)
- **Native addons that call `uv_async_*`, `uv_timer_*`, `uv_idle_*`,
`uv_prepare_*`, `uv_check_*`, `uv_queue_work` or `uv_cwd`** aborted with
"unsupported uv function" on Linux and macOS. They're implemented now.
(#36609, #39652, #39892)
- **`--watch` and `--hot`** panicked when the system was out of inotify
instances or file descriptors, or when the reload `exec` failed. They
print an error now. (#39629, #39975, #44837)
- **Paths longer than the path buffer** panicked in `bun install`, the
resolver, the bundler, `--compile`, `tsconfig.json` `paths` and
`baseUrl`, `package.json` `main` and `sideEffects`, `bun run --filter`,
`bun pm diff`, source maps and snapshots. They're ordinary errors now,
or they work. (#36340, #37529, #39104, #39650, #43067)
- **A Worker that creates a `ShadowRealm` and imports
`node:worker_threads` in it** segfaulted.
- **`structuredClone` or `postMessage` of an X25519 key** gave an object
that aborted the process when read. (#45624)
- **`node:stream` web adapters and `node:http2`** could end the process
with an exception that no handler could catch. (#45076, #45975)
- **Windows:** a watcher panic in a burst of file changes (#44344), a
segfault after the machine resumes from sleep (#33015), crashes in the
shell's pipe reader (#39638, #43606), and addons that import from
`node.exe` without the delay-load hook (#35618).

Most of the rest needs unusual input: strings near the 2 GiB limit,
buffers that another thread or a getter resizes or detaches in the
middle of a call, `worker.terminate()` at a bad moment, running out of
memory or file descriptors, very deep nesting, or hostile arguments to
`bun:ffi`, `node:vm` and `bun:sqlite`.

#### Behavior changes

Things that didn't crash before and behave differently now:

- `new` on native functions that aren't constructors throws a
`TypeError`, as in Node: `util.types.*`, `buffer.isAscii`, `isUtf8`,
`transcode`, `resolveObjectURL`, `bun:jsc` exports, `cc()` symbols. It
used to return the call's result. They also stop printing as `[class
hostname]`. (#34575)
- `` $`cmd` `` throws `ERR_INVALID_ARG_VALUE` if an environment
variable's name or value contains a NUL byte. It used to cut the value
at the NUL. (#44981)
- `cc()` functions throw a `TypeError` for arguments that used to reach
C as garbage, and `read.*(ptr, NaN)` throws. (#37989, #38057, #40773)
- As PID 1, `bun` exits with 128 + the signal number on Ctrl+C or
`docker stop`. (#38877)
- A `NODE_MODULE` addon that's already loaded by the main thread throws
`ERR_DLOPEN_FAILED` when a live Worker loads it too, as in Node.
(#39968)
- An exception from a `node:vm` context reaches `uncaughtException`
handlers. (#39992) `vm.constants.DONT_CONTEXTIFY` returns the real
global proxy. (#34623)
- `createPrivateKey` rejects an EC JWK whose private value doesn't match
its public point. (#33752)
- `@dec static {}` is a syntax error, as in TypeScript and esbuild.
(#44883)
- `clearTimeout` ignores 0 and negative ids, and timer ids no longer
wrap. (#44771)
- HEAD for a `Response` whose body is an S3-backed `Blob` reports the
length that GET sends. (#44734)
- `bun:sqlite` and `node:sqlite`: if `iterate()` left a write unfinished
on a connection that has a hook, a user function or an authorizer, the
write is finished on the connection's next call instead of during
garbage collection. If the database is gone too, it's rolled back.
- `bun test --bail` runs exit listeners and closes SQLite databases.
(#39010)
- Dev server: a request for a client script waits while a bundle is in
flight (#42733), query strings reach framework routes (#33232), and a
request gets a 500 instead of hanging when plugins fail (#36812).

#### File formats

- `.jsc` bytecode files get a 24-byte footer so they can be verified
before decoding. Files from an older Bun are ignored and the source is
parsed instead. (#39396)
- `node:vm` `cachedData` gets an 8-byte checksum. A blob from an older
Bun is rejected, which the API allows. (#32839)
- The built-in modules section of a compiled executable changes from
format 1 to 2 and carries an engine stamp. (#44907)

#### Performance

Measured in instructions per operation on release builds of this branch
and its base, with an A/A run for the noise floor (0.0 to 0.2 %).

No change: `Bun.serve`, `node:http`, WebSocket echo and publish, `bun
build` of 3,807 modules, `bun run` with 2,000 imports, `readdir` /
`Glob` / `fs.cp` over 23,689 entries, startup and RSS. The binary grows
by 176 KB (0.17 %).

| Faster | Instructions |
| --- | --- |
| WebSocket echo of a 1 MB non-ASCII text message | −72 % |
| `Bun.inspect` of a large non-ASCII string | −39 % |
| `Bun.markdown.html` on large non-ASCII input | −33 % |
| `` $`cmd` `` with 300 environment variables | −6 % |
| `fs.readSync` | −5 % |
| `TextEncoder.encodeInto`, short ASCII strings | −4 % |
| async `crypto.pbkdf2`, 16-byte inputs | −17 % |

| Slower | Instructions | Why |
| --- | --- | --- |
| `cc()` calls | +5 to +51 per call | Argument count and type checks,
and a check for `close()` (#37989, #38057, #43802, #44921). `dlopen()`
calls don't change |
| `process.env.X = v` | 38 → 593 per write | Writes aren't cached. Reads
don't change (#38871) |
| async `crypto.pbkdf2`, inputs of 1 KB or more | +4 to +9 % | Password
and salt are copied (#40554) |
| `bun build` with an object `--define` used thousands of times | +4.5 %
| The object is copied per use (#45969) |

#### Not included

- Fixes that need a WebKit change: #39967, #42534, #42982, #43764,
#43786, #44226. #42185 too: a typed array that has no `ArrayBuffer` yet
can't be pinned, so `view.buffer.transfer()` during an async call can
still free its bytes. Creating the `ArrayBuffer` up front costs 7 to 12
% on every async `fs` call, so the fix belongs in JSC: an `ArrayBuffer`
created while the view is borrowed should start out pinned.
- #45442 (`calc()` sums as a flat list): it changes minified output for
real stylesheets to survive a `calc()` with 25,000 terms. It deserves
its own review.
- #40023 (Windows event loop redesign), #29928 (Windows exit path),
#40534, #43963, #39571, #42904, #42834, #36355, #43266: refactors or
features whose crash is already covered or isn't a crash.
- The pull requests marked *(crash fix only)* below should stay open for
their other half.

### How did you verify your code works?

- **Tests.** Every fix has a test that fails on `main` (a release or an
ASAN build) and passes on this branch, except where that isn't
practical: code that only runs on Windows or macOS, inputs that need
several GB of memory, and a few rare races. Those were checked by hand
or by reading.
- **Stored repro scripts.** 230 crash repros ran on release and ASAN
builds of this branch and of `main`, side by side. Release: 88 no longer
crash. ASAN: 106 no longer crash. None crashes that didn't before. What
still crashes needs WebKit, is SQLite's own bug, or isn't a crash. The
ASAN number is from a later commit than the release number.
- **Dev server.** Because one fix makes requests wait, 2,171 generated
programs ran random interleavings of edits, build errors, failing
plugins, reloads, stops and disconnects with about 120,000 requests. No
request hung, was answered twice or got a stale body. `main` hung in 82
of 1,161 programs. This also found the four dev server bugs listed
above.
- **Path helpers.** 336,000 boundary cases with buffers of exactly the
computed size, and 12,003 random calls through 30 JS APIs on an ASAN
build, compared with `main`. No sanitizer report, and the results match
wherever `main` doesn't panic.
- **What worked on 1.4.3 still works.** Reviewers compared behavior with
1.4.3 and took out what changed it: for example an output directory
layout change for 9 or more entry points, a `server.reload()` change,
and a changed error message for `import("file:///50%deposit.ts")`.
- **Not run locally:** the Windows, macOS and FreeBSD code paths. CI
compiles and tests them.

Closing: #46021 merged the fix from this PR. It took the copy of an object or array define for each use, the copy of the list of a lone JSX spread object, the cache version and the tests. On main at 963452075e both repros print the whole object, and the 160-file build gives one output in 15 runs of a debug build with ASAN.

#46021 did not take two parts, in case they are wanted later: the private DefineData.value with its debug assertion, and the copier with no recursion. value_for_define on main returns the shared node when the stack check of the clone fails.
