Problem

  • bun check emits declarations that differ from tsc 7.0.2 for this[k] = v, exports[k] = v and f[k] = v. this[("a")] = 1 declares nothing: a false TS2339: Property 'a' does not exist on type 'C' in a referencing project.
  • Without parentheses too: f[E.A] = 1 declares no member.
  • The transformer names these keys with private copies of typescript-go's functions (errors_declaration_emit.rs:3332).

Fix

  • Each site calls the existing port: the binder's symbol name (this[k]), assignment_declaration_kind (exports[k]), literal_key (f[k]).
  • File::flags returns the JSDoc modifiers of an assignment: @private gives no type.
  • Verified: test/cli/check/assignment-declaration-keys.test.ts, test/cli/lint/jsdoc-modifier-tags.test.ts (main fails 12 of 14). Also check, conformance and lint suites.
  • Self-reviewed: 33 concerns raised, 30 addressed (Notes).

Background

  • In JavaScript, this.a = v, exports.a = v and f.a = v declare a. Referencing projects read the emitted declarations.
  • typescript-go has two name functions. GetElementOrPropertyAccessName skips parentheses. tryGetElementAccessExpressionName (literal_key) does not, and follows constants and enum members.
  • Considered a parenthesis guard at each site: the copies stay, wrong for 27 of 37 shapes without parentheses.

Downsides

  • f[E.A] = v, a constant key and JavaScript f.a.b = v give tsc's lines, some new errors.
  • bun lint --type-aware: dot-notation with allowPrivateClassPropertyAccess accepts this["a"] for /** @private */ this.a = v, as oxlint 1.87.0 does.
  • Measured at 91e7e3b: 30,346 to 30,372 transformer instructions per file without such an assignment, 15,518 to 17,694 with const k = "p"; f[k] = v. .text: +2,304 bytes.

4, new C().a TS2339: Property 'a' does not exist on type 'C'. no error
5, cjs.a + cjs.b TS2339 for a and for b no error

Lines 4 and 5 are valid code. No project reference is needed to see a difference: with "declaration": true, the errors of the transformer itself differ (TS4094, TS4032, TS2883, and TS9013 under isolatedDeclarations).

What the sites emit

Declaration text from bun check --run-typescript-tests --declarations and from tsc 7.0.2.

Source main This PR and tsc 7.0.2
this[("a")] = 1, this[('b')] = 1, this[(0x10)] = 1 in a class nothing "a": number;, 'b': number;, 0x10: number;
exports[("a")] = 1 declare const _exported: any; export { _exported as "" }; export declare var a: 1;
exports[(0)] = 1, exports[("default")] = 2 two constants of type any, both exported as "" export { _exported as "0" };, export default _default;
function f() {} f[("p")] = 1; namespace f { var p: number; } no namespace
const f = () => {}; f[("p")] = 1; function f(): void; namespace f { var p: number; } const f: { (): void; p: number; };
enum E { A } f[E.A] = 1; no member var A: number;
const k: string = "p"; f[k] = 1; no member var p: number;
f[k] = 1; const k = "p"; var p: number; no member
const { k } = { k: "p" } as const; f[k] = 1; var p: number; no member
f[1e500] = 1; no member var Infinity: number;
f.inner = function () {}; f.inner.deep = 1; in JavaScript var inner only var inner and var deep: number;
f.first = f.second = t; export { t as second }; export var first: typeof t; var first: typeof t; export { t as second };
/** @private */ before this.a = 1, exports.b = 1, f.p = 1 in JavaScript a: number;, var b: 1;, var p: number; a;, var b;, var p;

typescript-go binds f[("p")] = 1 as a property of f, and then emits no member for it. Its binder names the key with GetElementOrPropertyAccessName. Its transformer names it with tryGetElementAccessExpressionName (transform.go:2931). bun check follows both.

The other changes

  • The type of a member of f is the type of the symbol of the assignment (Checker::type_of_expando, late_bound.rs). main took the property of that name from the type of f. A key that names an export of f (a namespace member, an alias, prototype of a class) has the type of that export.
  • File::flags is the port of node.ModifierFlags(). typescript-go puts @private, @protected, @readonly, @public and @override on the assignment as modifiers (reparser.go:521). File::flags returned nothing for an assignment, so ensureType emitted a type for a @private assignment, and a false TS4094 when the type cannot be named. This is also true on main for this.a = v without parentheses.
  • File::flags has 24 callers, all in bun_sema. Three can see a JSDoc modifier: ensure_type, the member of f, and node_modifier_flags, which the typed lint rules read. bun lint --type-aware with dot-notation and allowPrivateClassPropertyAccess reported this["a"] for /** @private */ this.a = v. oxlint 1.87.0 with tsgolint 7.0.2004 does not. The new lint test has oxlint's lines.
  • The name in a declaration error is GetNameOfDeclaration of the assignment. TS2883 for exports.c = make() names 'c'. main names '(Missing)'. module.exports = make() has no name in tsc either.
  • TS4032 for module.exports = v keeps the name exports, as on main. typescript-go 7.0.2 has no line to follow there: it has no name for that assignment, and it panics when it formats the message (Invalid formatting placeholder).
  • exports[0] = undefined; exports[0] = 1; reported a false TS2322 on line 1. The name of a numeric key is now one Checker method for the checker and the transformer (exports_property_name, shape.rs).
  • A static this[k] = v in a derived class is compared with the static property of the class when the transformer asks if a base declares it.
  • The members of f are emitted in source order. The binder lists the inner assignment of f.a = f.b = v first.

Measurements

Release builds of main 91e7e3b and of this branch on top of it, before main was merged in. Since then the diff under src/ lost the hunk for the text of the this key, which main has now, and the name in TS4032 of module.exports = v is main's again. bun-profile check --threads=1 under gdb 16.3: stepi from the entry of the function to its return, each pc attributed to its nm symbol. The counts leave out the allocator (mi_*, _mi_*, operator new, operator delete, realloc) and code outside the binary. Two runs give the same count. valgrind, perf and bloaty are not installed on this machine.

  • The 26 instructions of the first row: 13 in File::flags (one more arm), 5 for the test that the assignments to functions are in source order, 8 from the layout of the code.
  • The constant key costs more because literal_key tests that the constant is declared before its use.
  • The export rows are for an export that is emitted as export declare var k. An export that needs a generated name is unchanged: 1,000 of exports["p-N"] = N take 305 to 445 ms on main and 304 to 405 ms with this PR (three runs each, in turn).
  • Allocations inside Checker::transform_declarations (mi_malloc / mi_realloc / mi_free): 5 exports 61 / 12 / 72 to 56 / 12 / 67. 500 exports 5,011 / 531 / 5,541 to 4,511 / 531 / 5,041. 5 x this["k"] = v 54 / 15 / 66 in both. 5 x f["q"] = v 69 / 12 / 76 in both.
  • Calls of File::parents_of_all in a whole run: a TypeScript project with f["q"] = v 0 and 0. A JavaScript file that is not type-checked, with const k = "p"; f[k] = v: 0 and 1.
  • Size (size -A, nm -S on bun-profile): .text 81,665,765 to 81,668,069 bytes. .rodata is the same. The stripped bun grows by one page (4,096 bytes). transform_commonjs_export_worker 8,076 to 7,997, build_class_members 14,550 to 14,677, transform_source_file 20,214 to 20,656, File::flags 1,022 to 1,177. New symbols: type_of_expando 930, get_name_of_declaration 631, name_of_commonjs_export 258, exports_property_name 187. Checker::literal_key has 564 bytes in both builds.

Parity

All counts are against tsc 7.0.2. The first four are from before the merge of main, with release builds of main 91e7e3b and of this branch. The last two are from after it (main 9634520).

  • 258 shapes of the three sites (each kind of key, host and position, in a project that is referenced and in one project): 253 print the lines of tsc -b --pretty false. The same with --threads=1, with lib: ["esnext"] and without a library. main: 163. The 5 that are left are panics of typescript-go.
  • Declaration text of 37 shapes of f.a = v and f[k] = v without parentheses: 36 are byte for byte those of tsc. main: 10. The one that is left is a panic of typescript-go.
  • 365 more shapes of f in a project (constant keys, enum keys, nested assignments, types that cannot be named, isolatedDeclarations): 345 print the lines of tsc. main: 186. The 20 that are left are the position of TS4032 in a JavaScript file (below).
  • In these sets and in 27 more sets of probes (236 shapes), no shape that prints the lines or the text of tsc on main stops doing so. One shape outside them does: this[(0777)] = v (below).
  • The 2,429 stored programs of differential-cases.json, with this branch and with main: 2,418 print the reference lines with both, 11 with this branch only (its new programs), none with main only.
  • TypeScript's tests: 13,101 of 13,101 error baselines, 12,463 of 12,463 type and symbol baselines and 13,032 of 13,032 declaration baselines are byte for byte those of typescript-go.

Tests

  • assignment-declaration-keys.test.ts has 12 programs with what tsc 7.0.2 prints for each. differential-cases.json has the same 12, so the release lanes ask tsc itself. One more test has the TS4032 line of module.exports = v, where tsc panics. jsdoc-modifier-tags.test.ts has the lines of oxlint.
  • main fails 12 of the 14 tests. The two that pass on main are controls: the program of keys that declare nothing, and the TS4032 line.
  • The tests are in files of their own, with projects that load no library. A debug build then runs each program in under two seconds, of the five that a test has. The four project-reference tests of check.test.ts that emit JavaScript declarations take 3.7 to 4.3 seconds there when only they run. test/cli/lint/rules.test.ts passes 0 of its 23 tests in a debug build on this machine, by the time limit.
  • 18 mutants, each one edit of this diff reverted (before the merge of main): 17 fail at least one of the programs. The one that passes is a clause that main has too (a numeric key is never an identifier name, see exports[1e500] below).
  • Release build of this PR, after the merge of main: differential-cases-1..4 pass 16 of 16 (2,429 programs against tsc 7.0.2), conformance 1..8 pass 48 of 48, differential.test.ts 66 pass, entry-points.test.ts 473 pass, union-properties.test.ts 71 pass, check.test.ts 827 pass and 1 failure (a package that is not installed on this machine). test/cli/lint: 4,419 pass and 1 failure, a memory limit that passes when the test runs alone.

Self-review

A review of the first version of this change raised 33 concerns. 30 are addressed in this version:

  • The type of a member of f came from the first declaration of the symbol. It was wrong for a key that names an alias or prototype. It now comes from type_of_expando, and alias.ts and prototype.js test it.
  • @private was not read. Fixed in File::flags, with a test for each shape and controls for @protected, @readonly and a TypeScript file.
  • A static this[k] in a derived class, the order of the members of f, the '(Missing)' name, and the numeric name for the undefined rule: fixed, each with a test.
  • Missing tests: exports.<keyword> = v, isolatedDeclarations with a constant or an enum key, Object.defineProperty(exports, "f-g", d). Added.
  • The first body said that no shape that equals tsc on main changes. That was false. The counts above are from the final build, and the one known loss is named.
  • The first body gave the scan of every export as a reason against a guard at each site. It is not a reason: real files have few exports. It is dropped.
  • Each comment under src/ is one line.

After the PR opened, a review comment found that TS4032 for module.exports = v lost an argument and printed a literal {2}. Fixed, with a test (see "The other changes").

Not done, 3 concerns:

  • Two asked to fold the six other sites where the transformer treats parentheses differently (first list below). They are not names of assignment keys. Each ports another test of typescript-go (IsVariableDeclarationInitializedToRequire, HasDynamicName, isCommonJSAliasExport, the heritage clause, the comment of a statement) and needs its own programs.
  • One asked for the value text of a numeric key that tsc rejects (this[(0777)] = v). bun check has no port of canUseOriginalText. Class members and type literals print such a number from the source too. The fix belongs in the printer, for every numeric name.

Not in this PR

Six sites where the transformer treats parentheses differently from tsc 7.0.2. All are the same on main.

Source tsc 7.0.2 bun check Site
const m = (require("./m.cjs")) declare const m: typeof import("./m.cjs"); import m = require("./m.cjs"); errors_declaration_emit.rs:4342
[(-1)]() {}, [-(1)]() {}, [(+2)] = 1 in a class no member the member errors_declaration_emit.rs:5120
(exports.a = g); export declare var a: typeof g; export { g as a }; errors_declaration_emit/commonjs.rs:164
(module.exports = g); declare const g_1: typeof g; export = g_1; export = g; errors_declaration_emit/commonjs.rs:68
class C extends (null) {} declare const C_base: null; and extends C_base extends null errors_declaration_emit.rs:4704
/** doc */ (this.a = 1); no comment on a /** doc */ on a errors_declaration_emit/commonjs.rs:448

Other differences at or near the three sites. All are the same on main, except the first.

  • this[(0777)] = v, and 089, 1__0, 1_, 0_1: the declaration has the source text of the key, and tsc writes the value (511). The source already has TS1121. A referencing project then reports TS1121 in the declaration file and is not checked further. main does the same for this[0777] = v without parentheses. With parentheses, main declared nothing and printed the lines of tsc.
  • A TS4032 for a member of f in a JavaScript file is reported at (1,1). tsc reports it at the assignment. typescript-go makes a synthesized namespace the enclosing declaration (transform.go:2770), which is not ported (errors_declaration_emit.rs:3421).
  • this[-1] = v: typescript-go panics when it prints the declaration. Under noEmit it reports the TS4094 of the type of v. bun check declares nothing for a signed number.
  • exports[1e500] = v: tsc writes export declare var Infinity, also when the file has a local Infinity. bun check writes export { _exported as "Infinity" }. A referencing project reports the same lines.
  • function* f() {} f.x = 1;: tsc writes declare function* f(), bun check writes declare function f() (errors_declaration_emit.rs:4034).
  • A key of f that names a namespace of f with a value in it (namespace f { export namespace p { export let z = 1; } }): tsc writes var p: number and reports nothing. bun check writes var p: typeof f.p and reports TS2322 for the assignment. The checker types f[k] by the namespace.
  • The symbol of exports.a = v is found by its name in the exports of the file. The binder records a symbol for this.a = v and f.a = v only (bind/binder.rs:481).
  • Outside the transformer: a class member [("a")]: number that the constructor assigns after a loop gets a false TS2564 (errors.rs:1177).

…n declaration files as `tsc` does

The declaration transformer named the key of each of these assignments
with a function that typescript-go does not call there.

- `this[("a")] = v` in a class of a JavaScript file declares the property.
  The name is the one the binder gave the symbol. The text is the key
  without its parentheses. A static assignment is compared with the static
  property of the class when the transformer decides if a base declares it.
- `exports[("a")] = v` in a CommonJS module exports the name. The name and
  the type come from the name that `assignment_declaration_kind` has. The
  symbol is looked up by that name, not by a scan of every export.
- `f[k] = v` declares the member that `literal_key` names, the port of
  `tryGetElementAccessExpressionName`: none for a key in parentheses, the
  member of a constant or of an enum member. The type is the type of the
  symbol of the assignment.
- `File::flags` of an assignment has the modifiers of its JSDoc, so a
  `@private` assignment gets no type.
- The name in a declaration error of one of these assignments is the key.
- `exports[0] = undefined` before another assignment to `exports[0]` is
  no error, as for a key that is a string.

Status

  • Reproduced on main with a release build and a debug build. In a referenced JavaScript project, this[("a")] = 1 and exports[("a")] = 1 give a false TS2339: Property 'a' does not exist in the referencing project. f[("p")] = 1 and f[E.A] = 1 declare other members than tsc 7.0.2. The script is under "Repro" in the Notes of the description.
  • The two new test files fail on main (12 of 14 tests, the other two are controls) and pass with this change, in a debug build and in a release build.

Walkthrough

The change resolves assignment property names for CommonJS exports and expando declarations. Declaration emission uses those names and updated type resolution to produce declarations. New compiler and lint tests cover key handling, emitted declarations, and JSDoc modifier behavior.

Priority: ➖ Normal

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to 4cb23

The declaration-emission changes have no confirmed runtime defects. One new differential test includes a deliberate syntax error, which hides type-checking output for the other assignments in the same project, so those valid cases are not compared against tsc. Separately, one new lint test belongs in the existing lint test file. Both are test-quality follow-ups, so the risk of merging is low.

Beyond the inline finding, I also checked whether replacing the inline const/enum-member resolution for f[key] with self.c.literal_key(file, index) (src/sema/check/errors_declaration_emit.rs:3328) drops that case — it does not: literal_key in src/sema/check/flow.rs:1478 still routes Ident/Dot keys through name_from_entity_name_expression, and only adds the parenthesis guard that matches tryGetElementAccessExpressionName. The new Flags lookup for assignments (src/sema/node.rs:2648) is a binary search over jsdoc_modifiers, so it returns empty for untagged assignments and does not change the Flags::PRIVATE gate for existing callers.

Extended reasoning...

The change rewires how the Rust declaration-emit path names and types JavaScript assignment declarations (this[k], exports[k], f[k]) to match typescript-go, adding type_of_expando, exports_property_name, a sorted expando iteration, and JSDoc modifier flags on assignment expressions, with new check and lint tests plus differential cases. It touches no security-sensitive surface. One confirmed finding (garbled TS4094-family message for module.exports = v after get_name_of_declaration returns Node::NONE) is posted inline; the note here records two further concerns examined in the diff and ruled out from the code.

…ent-keys

Conflicts:
- `errors_declaration_emit/commonjs.rs`: main now writes the key of `this[k]`
  through `get_text_of_node` (#46021). That hunk is main's.
- `errors_declaration_emit.rs`: main renamed a local and reworded two comments
  next to lines of this branch.
- `differential-cases.json`: the programs of this branch are appended to main's.
…dule.exports = v`

typescript-go has no name for `module.exports = v`. It prints `'(Missing)'`
in TS2883, and it panics when it formats TS4032 ("Invalid formatting
placeholder"). `get_name_of_declaration` returned no name for both, so TS4032
lost an argument and printed a literal `{2}`.

- `get_name_of_declaration` falls back to the left operand again, as on main.
  Only the fallback name of the tracker, which TS2883 prints, has no name.
- A test has the TS4032 line.
- The assignment with an unclosed parenthesis is a program of its own, so that
  tsc reports the other errors of the first program too.

Nothing blocking. The comments below are optional suggestions. There is no need to push a fix for them before merging.

Beyond the inline finding, I re-checked the TS4032 message for module.exports = v raised on the previous push: c65e961 has accessibility_diagnostic (errors_declaration_emit.rs:2578) take get_name_of_declaration, which again falls back to the left operand, while only the tracker's fallback name (line 2737) returns no name, and test/cli/check/assignment-declaration-keys.test.ts:729 now asserts the 'exports' wording.

Extended reasoning...

The two new commits since the last review merge main and fix the name used in the 4032/4033 accessibility error for a CommonJS module.exports = v; the remaining open point is the inline finding in type_of_expando (late_bound.rs:151-153), which can type an expando member by a type-only export of the same name.
