Problem

  • test/js/bun/s3/s3.test.ts fails all 4 attempts while Cloudflare R2 has a bad period: 12 lanes of PR builds in 8 days, last in build 131343 (should be able to upload large files in one go using Bun.write [15001.67ms]).
  • The cause is the service, not a commit. The answers are Cloudflare 502 Bad Gateway or 504 Gateway Time-out pages, or R2 InternalError or ServiceUnavailable. On 10-23 the file took 9 s at 15:07 UTC and 47 to 93 s at 15:29.
  • One attempt moves 428 MiB to and from R2 in 24 cases. They are 91 of the 116 cases that failed.

Fix

  • itLarge marks each case that moves 1 MiB or more in one request. These run against the local S3 server only, which already ran them.
  • A new case uploads two parts (5 MiB + 4 bytes) to both services and reads them back as a stream: 2 large requests to R2 per attempt, down from 56.
  • This is a partial fix: 10 of the 12 lanes pass without the large cases. On 10-17 R2 answered 10-byte PUTs with ServiceUnavailable for 3 minutes, and two lanes stay red. test(s3): run a case that fails against R2 once more #46671 is for that.
  • Verified: bun bd test test/js/bun/s3/s3.test.ts, also with a local stand-in for R2. Self-reviewed: 17 concerns raised, 15 addressed. Not taken: an opt-in live run (a maintainer decides) and a structural form of the mark.

Background

  • The file runs the same cases against R2 (live, from CI secrets) and test/packages/s3-server (test: replace the MinIO container with an S3 server on Bun.serve #44054).
  • The CI runner gives a file 4 attempts of 180 s. A lane is red when all 4 fail.
  • Considered longer limits for the large cases: 100 s limits failed too. Smaller payloads keep the 56 requests, and a 1 MiB read failed 3 times.
Notes

The 12 lanes that failed all 4 attempts (from the job logs; "large" is a case that itLarge now marks)

131350 darwin aarch64 10-23 16:05:06 4+0, 1+0, 1+0, 3+0 504 Gateway Time-out passes at attempt 1
  • 34 of the 48 attempts failed only on large cases. The 504 in 131336 arrived after its case had timed out, so the runner counted it as an error between tests.
  • Each of the 11 builds is a build of a PR branch.
  • There are two kinds of bad period. On 10-16, 10-21 and 10-23 a large request stalled for a minute or longer. This change is for that kind. On 10-17 each kind of request got ServiceUnavailable or InternalError after 4.0 to 5.9 s, also a PUT of 10 bytes. test(s3): run a case that fails against R2 once more #46671 is for that kind.

It follows the clock, not the commit or the platform (10-23, 16 builds, the ASAN lane left out)

window (UTC) attempts passed slowest pass failed only on large cases failed on a small R2 case failed only on the Amazon case
14:00 to 15:20 54 53 15.9 s 0 0 1
15:21 to 16:30 111 79 90.6 s 26 5 1
  • In the second window 23 of the 79 passes took more than 30 s. A request stalled and then completed.
  • On 10-21, build 130095 shows the same: 8.2 to 8.7 s on the five Linux lanes that started before 11:26, four failed attempts on windows 2019 x64 from 11:31, 8.1 s on darwin aarch64 at 11:41.
  • In 234 attempts from 24 builds, 145 cases failed. Each is an R2 > case. No s3-server > case failed. That group ran the same large cases, and 150 more uploads, in the same process.

What the client does with such answers (bun 1.4.3 against a local socket server)

  • A 502 with the Cloudflare page: S3Error, code UnknownError, the page as the message. This is the output in builds 131336 and 131343. A 10 MiB write() is one PUT and is not sent again.
  • A server that does not answer: the promise stays pending. An S3 request has no time limit of its own (s3: add a timeout option and a per-operation signal option #45695 adds one). The idle limit of the HTTP client is 300 s.
  • A server that closes the connection: code ConnectionClosed.

The same failure with a local server in the place of R2

The S3_R2_* secrets point the R2 group at a local S3 server that counts bytes. It has no DNS name for a bucket and no route to Amazon, so 3 cases fail in each run and are left out below.

per attempt before after
R2 cases that run 120 97
requests 450 313
requests or responses of 1 MiB or more 56 2
sent 234 MiB 5 MiB
received 194 MiB 5 MiB

When that server answers each 20th large request with the Cloudflare 502 page, each of 4 attempts fails before this change, on 1 or 2 large cases, with the output of build 131343 (S3Error: <html> ... 502 Bad Gateway ... code: "UnknownError"). After this change none of 4 attempts fails.

The form of the change

  • itLarge is it.skipIf(credentials.service !== "s3-server"), the expression that the writer() matrix of this file already had. Each case keeps its limit.
  • A large case passes its limit before its callback: itLarge("title", 50_000, async () => {. bun:test takes both orders. With the callback last the formatter keeps the call on one line, so the body of each case keeps its indentation: 2 changed lines per case.

What R2 does not get anymore

  • The 10 MiB PUT and GET of the "in one go" cases, and the 12 MiB of the writer() cases. The new case keeps one 5 MiB request body and one 5 MiB stream read.
  • A multipart upload that a stream, a fetch() body or flush() drives, and one with more than two parts. The requests on the wire are the same as in the new case.
  • R2 still gets the 96 cases with small bodies, the 4 virtual-hosted cases, and the new case.

What is left of the exposure

  • The new case sends 2 requests of 5 MiB to R2 per attempt. The worst rate in the logs is build 130097: 18 large cases failed in 4 attempts, which had 224 large requests (8%). At that rate an attempt fails on the new case with a probability of about 16%, and 4 attempts in a row with about 0.07%. Over the whole second window above the rate is 55 failed large cases in 6216 large requests (0.9%).
  • This code ran against R2 in builds 131386 and 131585: 409 pass, 174 skipped, 0 fail on each lane, in 7.0 to 8.1 s on the Linux release lanes. The commit after build 131585 changes comments only.

Not in this change

  • A bad period of the second kind (10-17). With a local server that answers 0.6% of the requests with the 503 of R2, 12 of 12 attempts fail on main and 10 of 12 with this change. With this change and test(s3): run a case that fails against R2 once more #46671, 2 of 24 fail.
  • A small R2 case that stalls (4 cases in the 48 attempts above, each at the 90 s limit).
  • R2 > s3 > credentials > should error with invalid endpoint sends a request to s3.us-west-1.amazonaws.com. It hung in builds 131258, 131337 and 131356, also while R2 was healthy. It is another host and another cause. test(s3): run the other-region case of s3.test.ts against the local server only #46609 is for it.
  • test/js/bun/s3/s3.leak.test.ts runs against R2 only and sends bodies of 1 MiB. This change does not touch it.
  • A live run that is opt-in: the loop over the services for the local server only, and one describe for R2 with one case for each kind of request. This change is a step in that direction. The step itself needs the decision of a maintainer.
  • A structural form of the mark: the three large payloads given to a case only as an argument of itLarge. Today 13 marks and the titles ("large files") keep the rule.

Earlier changes for the same failures

R2 is a live service. In its bad periods it holds a request of 1 MiB or
more for a minute or longer, or answers it with a Cloudflare 502 or 504
page or with InternalError. Each CI attempt of s3.test.ts then fails on
one of the 24 cases that move that much data, 428 MiB per attempt, and
the lane is red after 4 attempts.

itLargeTransfer marks these cases. They run against the local server of
test/packages/s3-server only, which already ran each of them. A new case
uploads two parts (5 MiB + 4 bytes) to both services, so R2 still gets
the requests of a multipart upload.

Status: ready for review. Test-only change. The change is green, and CI is red on a test that it does not touch.

CI

  • Build 131585 passed on every lane with this code. The one commit after it changes comments only: the transpiled test file is byte-identical.
  • Build 131720, on that last commit, failed on test/js/node/http/node-http-uaf.test.ts on darwin x64 (should not crash on abort timed out after 20 s on each retry). s3.test.ts passed on each lane of that build.

How it was reproduced

  • From CI: the job logs of builds 131313, 131336, 131343 and 131350 (10-23). The file fails all 4 attempts on the large-transfer cases, and the output has the Cloudflare 502 Bad Gateway and 504 Gateway Time-out pages.
  • Locally: the S3_R2_* secrets point the R2 group at a local S3 server that answers each 20th request of 1 MiB or more with the Cloudflare 502 page. Before this change each of 4 attempts fails with the output of build 131343 (S3Error: <html> ... 502 Bad Gateway ... code: "UnknownError"). After this change none of 4 attempts fails.

The cleanup of the case is registered before its first assertion. The
ETag is compared with the value that the two parts give, not only with
its suffix. The object is read back as a stream, so R2 still gets one
read of more than 1 MiB. The comment on itLargeTransfer says that this
case is the exception to its rule, and how large the exception is.

The second commit addresses everything I raised on the first version, and I found no bugs in the updated diff. Since this deliberately removes live-R2 coverage for stream-, fetch-body- and flush()-driven multipart uploads and for any upload with more than two parts, a maintainer should still confirm that trade-off is acceptable.

What was reviewed:

  • The itLargeTransfer gating: every converted case is a rename plus prettier re-indentation; bodies and existing timeouts are unchanged.
  • The new two-part case: stat.etag is the raw quoted header and the local server emits "<md5(md5 parts)>-2", so the exact ETag assertion matches; the writer logic cuts 5 MiB + 4 bytes into exactly two parts; cleanup runs in finally before any assertion.
  • The exact-ETag assertion has not yet been exercised against live R2 in CI (build 131377 ran the first commit only), so the first CI run of this version is worth a glance.
Extended reasoning...

The PR touches only test/js/bun/s3/s3.test.ts, converting 14 large-payload cases to a skipIf helper that runs them on the local s3-server only and adding one un-gated two-part multipart case that still runs against R2. No runtime code changes and no security-sensitive surface is touched. The second commit addressed all four earlier inline comments, and I verified the new assertions against the S3 client source and the local server's ETag computation. Defer rather than approve because dropping live-provider coverage for several multipart entry points is a maintainer policy call, and the exact R2 ETag assertion has not yet been proven by a CI run of this version.

bun:test takes the limit before the callback as well. With the callback
as the last argument the formatter keeps the call on one line, so the
bodies of the 12 cases keep the indentation they have on main. The
change against main is now 2 lines per case.

The two parts of the new case are random bytes. With one repeated byte
the ETag and the MD5 did not change when ranges of a part changed
places. The comment on the helper now says that it is about this file.

LGTM. The points from my earlier passes are addressed in this version: the two-part case now arms its unlink before any assertion, asserts the exact multipart ETag, and keeps one 5 MiB upload and one 5 MiB stream read against R2; the helper comment names that case as the deliberate exception. I checked the (name, timeout, fn) argument order against the test runner's argument parsing and confirmed the writer splits the 5 MiB + 4 B writes into exactly two parts, so the exact ETag assertion is deterministic on both services.

Extended reasoning...

The change is confined to test/js/bun/s3/s3.test.ts: an itLarge = it.skipIf(credentials.service !== "s3-server") helper (the expression the writer() matrix already used) gates every >= 1 MiB case to the local server, per-test timeouts move to the second argument, and one new two-part multipart case runs against both services. It touches no runtime code and no security-sensitive surface. The timeout argument order is honored by src/runtime/test_runner/ScopeFunctions.rs, the part split in src/runtime/webcore/s3/multipart.rs produces exactly [5 MiB, 4 B], and the local server's ETag formula matches the test's expectation, so the new assertions can fail only on a real regression. All four prior inline threads from this bot are addressed in the code, no CODEOWNERS entry covers the file, the third-party threads were resolved by a non-author, and the hunt ran dry with only a comment-length nit remaining.

The comment keeps what the mark is for and the failure that it is for.
The counts of one CI run are gone. The two-part case says at its own
place why it has no mark.

I reviewed the latest push and found no bugs; the points raised on earlier versions (cleanup armed before assertions, exact multipart ETag, shortened itLarge comment) are addressed in the current code. Since this deliberately drops every >=1 MiB transfer against the live R2 bucket from CI, a maintainer should still weigh that coverage trade-off (the PR notes an opt-in live run was left for a maintainer to decide).

What was reviewed:

  • The (name, timeout, fn) argument order on it.skipIf(...): accepted by both the Test type overloads and the runtime argument parser in src/runtime/test_runner/ScopeFunctions.rs, so each case keeps its original limit.
  • Every it to itLarge conversion moves a body of 1 MiB or more; no small-body case was gated.
  • The new two-part test: expected ETag matches the md5-of-md5s algorithm the local server implements in test/packages/s3-server/src/handlers/multipart.ts, unlink() runs in a finally that wraps all assertions, and the body is compared by MD5 after an exact length check.
Extended reasoning...

The change touches only test/js/bun/s3/s3.test.ts: it gates the large-transfer cases behind an it.skipIf helper so they run against the local s3-server only, moves each case's per-test timeout before the callback, and adds one un-gated two-part multipart upload that still exercises live R2. It touches no security-sensitive surface. No bugs were found and all prior inline feedback was addressed in commits 6714bf1 and 2bb336f. Defer rather than approve because the PR intentionally removes CI coverage of 1 MiB+ transfers over TLS against a real provider, which is a test-coverage policy decision the author explicitly left to a maintainer.
