Supersedes #35352.

Problem

  • Bun.spawn(cmd, { stdout: Bun.file(path) }) does not truncate an existing file: "OLD-OLD-OLD-OLD\n" becomes "new\nOLD-OLD-OLD\n". spawnSync and stderr do the same.
  • The slot is opened with no O_TRUNC: src/spawn_sys/spawn_process.rs:801, and src/spawn/process.rs:2138 on Windows.
  • The Bun Shell uses the same open for cmd >> ${new Response(Bun.file(p))}, so >> does not append.

Fix

  • All 4 open sites read path_slot_open_flags(slot). Only stdout and stderr change: they gain O_TRUNC.
  • The shell opens a Response-wrapped path file, like > path. Bun.spawn throws when stdin is the same regular file as stdout or stderr.
  • Verified: test/js/bun/spawn/spawn-stdio-file.test.ts and test/js/bun/shell/file-io.test.ts (31 new tests fail on main). Also spawn.test.ts and bunshell.test.ts.
  • Self-reviewed: 28 concerns raised, 25 addressed (Notes).

Background

  • A path slot is a Bun.file(path) given as stdio. The child opens it between fork and exec (on Windows, the parent).
  • On Windows O_CREAT|O_TRUNC is CREATE_ALWAYS, which refuses a hidden file. Bun then opens the file in place and truncates it.
  • Considered a truncate at exit, as Truncate existing destination files in path-opened FileSinks #31686 asked for FileSink. A command that opens /dev/stdout then loses its output.

Downsides

  • This changes a default that no user reported. The file is emptied even if the command cannot start. The opt-out is a file descriptor.
  • The throw also rejects a command that never reads stdin. It does not detect a second name for the file (a symlink).
  • A same-size rewrite of a cached 256 MiB file takes 461 ms, not 52 ms. .text grows by 2,816 bytes. One path at stdin and an output costs one stat.
Notes

Question for a maintainer. landing-prs.md says a changed default goes behind a flag, and that the test is whether real code depends on the old result. Is this a bug fix with no flag, or a changed default?

  • The bug was found by reading the code. There is no issue for it. stdout: openSync(path, "w") gives the new result on released versions.
  • GitHub code search finds 868 files with stdout: Bun.file(. In the first 40 results the targets are logs, reports, a pg_dump backup and a checksum file. None needs the in-place result. 6 pass the same path to stdout and stderr.
  • Bun.write(path) and the shell > already replace the file. The one existing test that fills the target first writes "wrong!" there (spawn.test.ts, "Bun.file() works as stdin and stdout"). It passes on main because "wrong!" and "hello!" have the same length.
  • If the answer is an opt-in, row 1 | 2 of the table goes back to WRONLY|CREAT and the rest of the PR stays.

Why not a truncate at exit. #31686 asked for ftruncate at the end for FileSink, because O_TRUNC makes a repeated rewrite of a large file slower. That cost is real here too (numbers below). A truncate at exit needs the parent to hold the open file and to cut at its offset when the child exits. I simulated that: sh -c 'echo new' gives "new\n", but echo new > /dev/stdout, echo new >> /dev/stdout and dd of=/dev/stdout all end with an empty file, because those writes do not move the parent's offset. It also keeps the old tail for a detached child and for a reader during the run.

Measurements (Linux x64 release builds of main 5c6d4e2 and this PR)

  • Bun.file(path) stdout slot: 0 parent + 3 child syscalls (main: 0 + 3), open flags 0x241 (main: 0x41). ptrace syscall log, 5 runs each (strace is not installed in the build container).
  • Shell >> ${new Response(Bun.file(p))}: 4 syscalls on the target (main: 3, ${Bun.file(p)} control: 4). Parent fds held during the command: 1 (main: 0).
  • Allocations per spawn, PR minus main: no path slot 0 (110 and 110), path slot 0 (112 and 112), shell Response redirect -1 (72 against 73). gdb breakpoint counts on mi_*.
  • Spawn with no path slot: the disassembly of spawn_process_posix is identical outside the Path arm. Inside the arm 2 instructions become 4. There is no instructions:u number because perf is not installed.
  • Release binary: +2,816 bytes .text (size -A, main 6292c65 against the head of this PR). bloaty is not installed.
  • The same-file check, parent syscalls in the ptrace log (main and this PR): /dev/null at stdin and stdout 0 and 1 (newfstatat, plus 1 allocation for the C string), two different paths 0 and 0, no path slot 0 and 0, a relative path with cwd 0 and 0 (it throws with no stat).
  • Truncating an existing file inside Bun.spawnSync(["/bin/true"]) (ext4, interleaved A/B, 20 rounds, noise floor 0.02 to 0.21 ms): -0.08 ms at 4 KiB, +0.29 ms at 1 MiB, +49.0 ms at 512 MiB. Bun.write(p, "") on the same 512 MiB file: 47.3 ms. New path: -0.20 ms. tmpfs at 512 MiB: +32.7 ms.
  • Same-size rewrite until exit, dd bs=1M into an existing page-cached file (ext4, 8 rounds): 64 MiB 16.0 -> 150.4 ms, 256 MiB 51.8 -> 460.7 ms. sh -c 'dd > file': 225.1 and 451.6 ms. This PR with an fd opened "r+": 18.5 and 63.2 ms.
  • Windows uv flags for slots 0 / 1-2 / 3+: 0x100 / 0x301 / 0x102, asserted at compile time. bun run rust:check-all passes for both Windows targets, aarch64-apple-darwin, x86_64-unknown-freebsd and aarch64-linux-android. Hand-written path-slot flag expressions: 4 -> 0.
  • Behaviour probe, debug builds of main and this PR: 15 of 26 rows changed, all expected (spawn x10, shell Response x5). Unchanged: stdin, index >= 3, the fd form, Bun.file(path).writer().

Behaviours that change for stdout/stderr: Bun.file(path)

  • A child that writes nothing leaves an empty file. Before, the old file stayed whole.
  • The same path string as stdin and as stdout or stderr: Bun.spawn and Bun.spawnSync throw a TypeError before they open anything, and the file keeps its content. Without the throw, the open of stdout empties the file before the child reads it, and an in-place filter ends with an empty file at exit code 0. Bun.write on itself causes content to be empty #20462 is that outcome for Bun.write, with the label confirmed bug. On main the pattern worked when the output had the length of the input. stdin: await Bun.file(path).bytes() filters a file in place.
  • The throw needs a regular file. When the two strings are equal, Bun calls stat on the path. A regular file throws, and so does a path that does not exist, because O_CREAT makes a regular file there. A device or a FIFO runs as on main: the open cannot empty it. The first form of the check had no stat, and it rejected /dev/null at both slots (test/bundler/transpiler/transpiler-stack-overflow.test.ts).
  • The throw also rejects calls that lose nothing: an empty file, a file that does not exist yet, and a command that never reads stdin. The message names stdin: "ignore" for the last case. The rule depends only on the kind of the path, so the misuse shows on the first run and not when the file gets content.
  • Limits of the check. It compares path bytes, so a second name for the file (./x against x, a symlink, a hard link) or a file descriptor of the file is not detected, and the file is emptied. A comparison of st_dev and st_ino detects a second name. It costs 2 or 3 stat calls in every spawn with a path at stdin and at an output, so it is not in this PR. A Bun.file(path) at index >= 3 with the path of stdout is not checked.
  • A relative path with cwd. Linux opens it under cwd: the child calls chdir before the open (src/jsc/bindings/bun-spawn.cpp:363). By code reading, macOS and Windows open it against the cwd of the process (src/spawn_sys/posix_spawn.rs:546, src/spawn/process.rs). A stat from the parent can then find another file, so on POSIX the check throws for such a path with no stat.
  • Windows, by code reading: libuv reports only the NUL device as a character device, so Bun.file("/dev/null") at both slots runs. Another device name (CON) at both slots can throw. I did not run that.
  • With terminal, Bun opens none of the three files, so the check does not run.
  • A command that cannot be executed (a path that does not exist, no x bit, a bad shebang) throws, and the file is already empty. sh does the same. A command that is not in PATH fails before the open and keeps the file.
  • A path that is an alias of the parent's stdout (/dev/stdout when stdout is a regular file) truncates that file.

The shell commit. It is a guard for the spawn change, for external commands only. Without it the new flags turn cmd >> ${new Response(Bun.file(p))} from a write over the start of the file into a full replace. So the two commits land as one squash, or shell first.

  • > and 2> replace the file, >> and 2>> append, &> works (it threw Blobs are immutable, and cannot be used for stdout/stderr).
  • < on a file that does not exist fails with bun: No such file or directory: <path> and creates nothing. Before, it created the file and read EOF.
  • On Windows, cmd > ${new Response(Bun.file(hidden))} with a hidden target now fails with EPERM, as cmd > hidden and cmd > ${Bun.file(hidden)} do on main (by code reading: the shell opens through sys_uv::open, which has no fallback for a hidden file). On main this form reached the spawn open and wrote into the file. The fix belongs in the open of the shell and is a separate task.
  • The shell opens the file before the spawn, with mode 0o666 (the child used 0o664), relative to the cwd of the shell. On Linux that was already the cwd used. By code reading, macOS and Windows used the cwd of the process.
  • The seven shell tests run for ${Bun.file(p)} too. That form passes on main: the template already turns it into a path word, so it never was Stdio::Path.
  • Builtins still refuse echo x > ${new Response(Bun.file(p))}. The shell docs do not list Response as an output target. Whether it is one is question 1 in the notes of shell: open a Response over Bun.file(path) as a file redirect #46687, so that a maintainer answers it once.
  • shell: open a Response over Bun.file(path) as a file redirect #46687 does this reroute for spawned commands and for builtins through one classifier, and takes the body only after the open succeeds. It conflicts with this commit in Cmd::init_subproc_redirections. This PR keeps its own commit so that it is safe to merge in either order. The PR that lands second rebases this commit away.
  • A path with a NUL byte throws ERR_INVALID_ARG_VALUE, as the bare ${Bun.file(path)} form does. An earlier revision of this commit passed such a path to the open, and a C open stops at the NUL. The only source of such a path is Bun.build with a NUL in naming. On a release build with that source, the redirect now throws and the file on disk keeps its content. No test covers it: that Bun.build call panics in a build with assertions, so the test would run on neither the debug nor the ASAN lane.

Not in this PR

Why not #35352 as it is. It adds O_TRUNC at 2 of the 4 open sites and leaves the shell route alone. With it, cmd >> ${new Response(Bun.file(p))} replaces the file.

Self-review. One finding asked for a different Windows shape: open without O_TRUNC, then ftruncate on every path slot. I kept one CREATE_ALWAYS open for an ordinary file (no added syscall) and made the fallback return the error of the first open. The open finding of the first review is the Response question in the shell section above.

A second review looked only at the same-file check, after CI showed that it rejected /dev/null. It raised 14 concerns, and 11 are fixed: the relative path with cwd on Linux, the message for a file that does not exist, the order against terminal, a leak of extra pipes on Windows when the check throws, 4 missing tests, and 3 on names and docs. One more needed a run on Windows 11, where libuv reads the stat of \\.\NUL through GetFileInformationByName: the tests with /dev/null at both slots pass on Windows 11 aarch64 and on Windows 2019 x64. Not done: a check for index >= 3 and other Windows device names.

The test file. The spawn tests are in a new file and not in spawn.test.ts. That file runs every test a second time under BUN_FEATURE_FLAG_FORCE_WAITER_THREAD, and the open flags of a path slot do not depend on the waiter thread. The new file holds 43 tests for path_slot_open_flags and the same-file check.

Windows. I cannot run Windows here. The hidden-file branch follows the NtCreateFile retry in src/sys/lib.rs (#6820) and the test writing to windows hidden file is possible in fs.test.ts. When the in-place open or the truncate fails, the error of the first open is returned, so a read-only file still fails with EPERM. Two Windows-only tests cover both cases. Both pass in CI on Windows 2019 x64 and Windows 11 aarch64.

Suites run on a debug build of this PR. spawn-stdio-file.test.ts (41 pass, 2 Windows-only skips), file-io.test.ts (41), spawn.test.ts (183), transpiler-stack-overflow.test.ts (1), terminal-spawn.test.ts (16), process-stdin.test.ts (22). Earlier heads also ran bunshell.test.ts (464), spawnSync.test.ts (17), shell-pipe-read-fault.test.ts (11), yield.test.ts (25), test-node-extra-ca-certs.test.ts (12) and bun-types.test.ts (24). Two files had 5 s timeouts in a full debug run and pass alone: spawn-stdin-readable-stream.test.ts (2 tests) and spawn-pipe-start-error.test.ts (1 test). On a release build of main, 26 tests of spawn-stdio-file.test.ts and 5 of file-io.test.ts fail.

An external command redirected to `new Response(Bun.file(path))` lowered
the path to `Stdio::Path`, which `Bun.spawn` opens by slot. `>>` did not
append, `&>` threw, and `<` created a missing file.

The shell now opens the path itself, like `> path`. `>` and `2>` replace
the file, `>>` appends, `&>` gives both streams one open file, and `<`
fails on a file that does not exist. A relative path resolves against the
cwd of the shell on every platform.
…rr replace the file

`path_slot_open_flags(slot)` gives the open flags of a path stdio slot.
The two POSIX arms and the two Windows arms read it. stdin stays
O_RDONLY|O_CREAT and an extra slot stays O_RDWR|O_CREAT. stdout and stderr
gain O_TRUNC, so a shorter output no longer keeps the tail of the file
from the last run.

On Windows CREATE_ALWAYS refuses an existing hidden or system file. For
that file the open is done in place and the file is truncated after it.

How I reproduced it, on bun 1.4.3-canary and on a debug build of main:

import fs from "node:fs";
fs.writeFileSync("out.txt", "OLD-OLD-OLD-OLD\n");
await Bun.spawn(["echo", "new"], { stdout: Bun.file("out.txt") }).exited;
console.log(JSON.stringify(fs.readFileSync("out.txt", "utf8")));
// main:    "new\nOLD-OLD-OLD\n"
// this PR: "new\n"

Bun.spawnSync and stderr: Bun.file(path) give the same result. On a release build of main, 26 of the 41 tests that run on Linux in test/js/bun/spawn/spawn-stdio-file.test.ts fail, and 5 in test/js/bun/shell/file-io.test.ts. With this PR all pass.

The diff is green on commit 6a493db (build 131952): 180 of 181 jobs passed, and no test of this PR failed on any lane. I read the logs for Windows 2019 x64, Windows 11 aarch64 and macOS aarch64: spawn-stdio-file.test.ts has 0 failures there, and transpiler-stack-overflow.test.ts passes again. That includes the Windows-only tests and /dev/null at stdin and stdout on both Windows lanes.

The one failed job does not come from this diff. One of the two darwin aarch64 - test-bun jobs failed before any test ran: the CI step that copies the checkout into the VM stopped with rsync -a --delete exited 23. The other job of that lane passed and ran the tests of this PR.

Six tests failed in a parallel batch or on the first try, and passed alone or on the retry: structured-clone-fastpath.test.ts, spawn_waiter_thread.test.ts, webview-chrome.test.ts, filesink.test.ts, test-cluster-shared-leak.js and lint.test.ts.

The open point is the question in the PR notes: is it acceptable that stdout and stderr: Bun.file(path) replace the file with no flag?

PR: #46665

Walkthrough

Child-process path stdio now uses fd-slot-specific open flags. File-backed shell redirects open paths with redirect flags. Tests and documentation cover file creation, truncation, append behavior, and descriptor handling.

Changes

File-backed process I/O

Layer / File(s) Summary
Path-backed stdio behavior

Path opens use flags based on the fd slot: stdin opens read-only, stdout and stderr open with truncation, and extra slots open read-write without truncation. On Windows, a failed truncating open retries without create or truncate flags, then truncates the existing file in place. Tests and documentation cover path-backed files and numeric descriptors. O::from_bun_o is now a const fn; its flag translation logic is unchanged.

src/runtime/shell/states/Cmd.rs, src/runtime/shell/subproc.rs, src/runtime/shell/shell_body.rs, test/js/bun/shell/file-io.test.ts
File-backed Response bodies that resolve to paths are opened with the redirect operator’s flags, and the resulting fd is assigned to redirected stdio slots. Shell path null-byte errors use a helper that preserves the existing error. Tests cover replacement, append, combined output, input, missing files, and resolution against the shell cwd.

Explanation

The description follows the repository template. It has both required sections: "What does this PR do?" (Problem, Fix, Background, Downsides, and a Notes block) and "How did you verify your code works?" (test files, suites run, and benchmarks). It explains the behavior change, the reasons for the chosen approach, and the known limits. Two items weaken it. First, the author asks a maintainer whether the default change needs a flag, so the scope is not settled. Second, the Windows-only paths were not run locally and rely on CI. The evidence note flags this as a "no test proof" for spawn-stdio-file.test.ts. The core content is complete, so the check passes.

The seven redirect tests now run for both spellings. `${Bun.file(path)}`
is a path word in the template, so it passes on main too. The comment at
the assert in the shell spawn says why no slot is `Stdio::Path`.

The docs example closes the file descriptor in `finally`.

The test children read and write with `fs` on the fd numbers.
`process.stdout` and `process.stdin` load slowly in a debug build, and
a cold run took one test past its 5 s timeout.
A C open stops at a NUL byte, so the redirect opened another file than
the one the Blob names. `Bun.build` with a NUL in `naming` gives such a
path. The redirect now throws ERR_INVALID_ARG_VALUE, as the bare
`${Bun.file(path)}` form does at template time.

Beyond the inline findings, I also checked the Windows open_path_slot extraction in src/spawn/process.rs against the two inlined opens it replaces: both the Sys and uv error arms still run cleanup_uv_files on earlier fds, and the EPERM retry closes its own fd when ftruncate fails, so no fd is stranded. The shell Response-over-path branch in src/runtime/shell/states/Cmd.rs reuses the exact shell_openat/redirection_fd sequence of the string-path branch (mode 0o666 relative to cwd_fd), so it matches > path rather than introducing a third open site.

Extended reasoning...

The change routes every Bun.file(path) stdio open (POSIX child, Windows parent, shell Response redirect) through one flag table and adds O_TRUNC for stdout/stderr, which is a user-visible default change the PR itself flags as a maintainer question. No security-sensitive surface beyond NUL-byte path rejection, which is preserved via the hoisted helper. The inline findings (same-file in-place filter now empties the file, Windows truncates before uv_spawn can fail, Windows hidden-file shell redirect) plus the open default-change question mean a human decision is needed.

Findings marked 🟡 are optional suggestions and need no follow-up push.

The open of stdout or stderr empties the file before the child reads
stdin, so an in-place filter ended with an empty file and exit code 0.
`Bun.spawn` and `Bun.spawnSync` now throw before they open anything, and
the message names `stdin: await Bun.file(path).bytes()`.

The open item on src/runtime/shell/states/Cmd.rs:792 stays as it is in this PR. I resolved its thread.

  • The case: on Windows, cmd > ${new Response(Bun.file(hiddenPath))} now fails with EPERM when the file has the hidden attribute.
  • On main, cmd > hidden.txt and cmd > ${Bun.file(hiddenPath)} already fail the same way in the Bun shell. shell_openat opens with CREATE_ALWAYS and has no fallback for a hidden file. I read this from the code and did not run it on Windows.
  • After this PR the Response spelling gets the same result as those two spellings.
  • A fallback belongs in shell_openat, where it covers every spelling and the builtins. That is a separate change. The Notes in the PR body list this case.

The check compared the path strings only. So `/dev/null` at stdin and at
stdout threw, although the open cannot empty a device or a FIFO.

When the strings match, the check now calls `stat` on the path. It throws
when the path is a regular file or does not exist. On POSIX it also throws,
with no `stat`, for a relative path when the call passes `cwd`: the child
can open that path under `cwd`, where the parent finds another file.

The check runs after `terminal` replaces the three streams. The message
names the path and both remedies.
