bun:test: throw in toHaveLength() and toBeEmpty() for a Blob of unknown size - #46813
To decide on:expect(Bun.file(path).slice(a, b)) throws in both matchers until something runs a stat on the file. On main its negated forms pass. Notes has the alternative.
Problem
expect(blob).toHaveLength(n) and .toBeEmpty() take an internal marker for the length of a Blob of unknown size: a Bun.file() of a missing path, a directory or a pipe. toHaveLength(0) fails with Received length: 17976931348623157... (309 digits). .not.toHaveLength(n) and .not.toBeEmpty() pass.
JSC__JSValue__getLengthIfPropertyExistsInternal (src/jsc/bindings/bindings.cpp:2992) returns DBL_MAX for such a Blob. The matchers only know +Infinity and NaN.
Fix
That function returns NaN for such a Blob. Both matchers throw Received value is a Blob whose size is not known: FileRef ("/path"), with and without .not.
Correct because no caller can compare or print NaN as a length. JSValue::get_length still gives 0.
Verified: test/js/bun/test/expect.test.js (6 new tests, 5 fail on main). Also jest-extended.test.js, body-clone.test.ts, inspect.test.js, blob.test.ts.
test/js/bun/test/expect.test.js:2612 still says: "if a file doesn't exist, it should throw (not return 0 size)".
Jest throws for a received value with no numeric length, with and without .not. Run with expect 30.5.2 on Node 26.3.0: expect(new Blob(["abc"])).not.toHaveLength(0) is a TypeError.
What has an unknown size
All forms of the two matchers throw for these. A fixed matrix of 199 rows has 68 changed rows, all of these kinds.
Bun.file() of a missing path, a directory, a FIFO, /dev/null, and Bun.stdin. A slice of one of them.
Bun.file(path).slice(a, b) of a regular file, when nothing has run a stat on the file. See the next section.
On main toHaveLength(size) fails on it with the 309 digits, and .not.toHaveLength(size) passes. .not.toHaveLength(other) and .not.toBeEmpty() pass, and for a file with content those two results are right. They now throw. The tests do not pin this case.
.size, .lastModified, exists() or one of the two matchers on the Bun.file() makes the slice known. slice.size, await slice.text(), await file.text() and await file.stat() do not. A test can use expect(slice.size).toBe(n).
Rejected in self-review
Ask the Blob in the matchers before the C++ function runs, or test for f64::MAX in the matchers and keep the marker (4 concerns). NaN adds no work to a passing call, and no reader can take it for a length. If a reviewer prefers the marker, the change is small: then nothing outside src/runtime/test_runner changes.
A typed result for the C++ function (1 concern). Not built: nobody asked for it.
Delete the f64::MAX test of JSValue::get_length in this PR (1 concern). See the next section.
JSValue::get_length does not change
Its if len == f64::MAX { return Ok(0); } (src/jsc/JSValue.rs:1366) has no Blob behind it after this PR. It still decides { length: Number.MAX_VALUE }.
I built the deletion and measured it. .text grew by 12,544 bytes: JSArrayIterator::init gets 18 bytes smaller, and LLVM then inlines it at 47 of its 99 call sites. Bun.spawnSync({ cmd: { length: Number.MAX_VALUE } }) went from cmd must not be empty to cmd array is too large, and Bun.$({ raw: { length: Number.MAX_VALUE } }) started to throw.
For such a slice the matcher ran one stat, and took the size of the slice when the file was a regular file.
A slice that exists before the stat is not cut to the file, so that size is its window. First use, release builds:

Main gives the same four answers when file.size runs after slice(). When it runs before, the slice is cut to the file, and toHaveLength(10) fails for the last three.
The stat also kept st_mode on the store that a slice shares with its Bun.file(). For a Bun.file(fd) it kept the whole fstat: size stayed 20 after the file grew to 100.

Calls of throw_nan_length in 200,000 passing matcher calls each on an array, a string, a Headers, a Blob and a Bun.file(): 0 (gdb breakpoint counts).
stat system calls, gdb catch syscall: equal in 9 call orders. The matchers add no stat.
objdump: direct calls of JSArrayIterator::init 99 and 99, of JSValue::get_length 19 and 19.
Not measured: macOS, Windows, aarch64. The container has no strace, perf or valgrind.
Not run: Windows. The FIFO row is skipped there. The directory and missing-path rows are not.

…wn size
The length probe returned f64::MAX for a Blob whose size is unknown (a
file that does not exist, a directory, a pipe). toHaveLength() and
toBeEmpty() took that number for a length. toHaveLength() printed it as
309 digits, toHaveLength(Number.MAX_VALUE) passed, and the negated forms
passed.
The probe now returns NaN for such a Blob. The two matchers throw
"Received value is a Blob whose size is not known", with and without
.not. JSValue::get_length does not change: NaN casts to 0, which is what
it returned for such a Blob before.
The Blob length binding now returns NaN for an unknown Blob size. The toHaveLength and toBeEmpty matchers use a shared helper to report errors for NaN values. Tests cover unknown-size Blobs and numeric and NaN length properties.
Both matchers use a shared helper to classify NaN lengths as an unknown Blob size or a non-number length property. Tests cover missing paths, directories, FIFOs on non-Windows platforms, slices, and numeric and NaN length properties.

Beyond the inline finding, I also checked the only other consumer of the changed C++ length probe, JSValue::get_length (src/jsc/JSValue.rs:1362): with NaN in place of DBL_MAX, clamp passes NaN through and the as u64 cast saturates to 0, so it still returns 0 for an unknown-size Blob. I also confirmed the Blob-ness check in throw_nan_length cannot misclassify a plain { length: NaN } object: a JSBlob is a JSDOMWrapperType and is handled before the generic length-property path in bindings.cpp, so NaN from a Blob only ever means unknown size.
Extended reasoning...
The change swaps the unknown-Blob-size sentinel in JSC__JSValue__getLengthIfPropertyExistsInternal from DBL_MAX to NaN, adds a shared throw_nan_length helper used by toHaveLength and toBeEmpty, and adds test.each rows for missing path, directory, FIFO and slices. It touches no security-sensitive surface. The inline finding (negated matchers on a slice of an existing regular file now throw where they passed, a regression the PR itself lists as a downside) is a user-visible behavior change a human should weigh, so this is not an approve.

🔴 bun:test users whose suites call .not.toBeEmpty() or .not.toHaveLength(n) on a slice of an existing regular file now get a thrown error where the base passes. The helper at src/runtime/test_runner/expect.rs:1640 treats every NaN from the length probe as an unknown size, but get_size_for_bindings (src/runtime/webcore/Blob.rs:1925) also answers u64::MAX for Bun.file(path).slice(a, b) of a regular file that nothing has stat'd yet. Fix: before reporting unknown size, resolve seekability for a file-backed slice whose seekable is unset (one stat on the store) so a regular-file slice keeps its known length, and only truly unsizable stores (missing path, directory, FIFO) throw. [also at: src/jsc/bindings/bindings.cpp:2993 - Test authors who slice a regular Bun.file() before anything stats it now get a throw from toHaveLength()/toBeEmpty() where the negated forms passed before.]
Why this was flagged
A test does const s = Bun.file("data.bin").slice(0, 10); expect(s).not.toBeEmpty(); without reading .size on the parent file first. Bun__Blob__getSizeForBindings goes to get_size_for_bindings at src/runtime/webcore/Blob.rs:1913; has_size is true for a slice, file.seekable is None and mode_seen_by_clone is None, so src/runtime/webcore/Blob.rs:1934 returns u64::MAX. The C++ probe at src/jsc/bindings/bindings.cpp:2993 now returns PNaN instead of DBL_MAX. toBeEmpty at src/runtime/test_runner/expect/toBeEmpty.rs:78 and toHaveLength at src/runtime/test_runner/expect/toHaveLength.rs:61 call Expect::throw_nan_length, which finds the value is a Blob and throws "Received value is a Blob whose size is not known: FileRef ("data.bin")". On the base branch the length was DBL_MAX, so .not.toBeEmpty() and .not.toHaveLength(10) passed (and were correct). The toHaveLength test block at test/js/bun/test/expect.test.js:2667 only covers slices of a missing path and a directory, not of a regular file, so nothing pins this case.
Verification: The C++ probe (src/jsc/bindings/bindings.cpp:2990-2993) now maps that u64::MAX to PNaN instead of DBL_MAX; toBeEmpty.rs:77-78 and toHaveLength.rs:60-61 then call Expect::throw_nan_length (expect.rs:1640-1649), which, since from_js(value) is a Blob, throws "Received value is a Blob whose size is not known: FileRef (...)" — before not is applied.

The regression is real: on main .not.toBeEmpty() passes on such a slice, and with this PR it throws. It is now the first line of the description, as a choice for a maintainer. No code change in this push.
I built the suggested stat before I opened the PR, and removed it. A slice that exists before the stat is not cut to the file, so the stat gives the slice its window, not the bytes that are in the file. First use of Bun.file(path).slice(a, b), release builds:

Three of the four are silent passes of a wrong length. Main gives the same answers when file.size runs after slice(), and the right ones when it runs before. The stat also kept its result on the store that a slice shares with its Bun.file(): a Bun.file(fd) reported size 20 after the file grew to 100.
A right answer needs the window cut to st_size. That decides what size a file slice has, and #44504 left that open on purpose: an empty file and a procfs file give the same stat. #45859 and #39763 change the same state. So this PR reports what the Blob layer knows about such a slice, which is nothing. console.log of a Response over it prints no size for the same reason.
A test has two exits: expect(slice.size).toBe(n), or a read of file.size before the matcher. If a maintainer prefers the stat, it is a small change on top of this one.
