Problem

  • A one-shot read of a Bun.file() slice past byte 0 calls lseek(fd, offset), then read(2). With Bun.file(fd) or Bun.stdin that moves the caller's descriptor.
  • Two such reads race: 399 concurrent slices of one descriptor returned another slice's bytes in 8 of 150 runs.
  • The seeks are in ReadFile (src/runtime/webcore/blob/read_file.rs:748) and NodeFS::read_file_with_options (src/runtime/node/node_fs.rs:7157).

Fix

  • Both sites read a slice that starts inside a regular file, or at its end, with pread at the offset. Every other read keeps its code path.
  • Correct because each read returns the same bytes as before (42 of 42 probe rows).
  • Verified: 5 new tests in test/js/bun/util/bun-file-fd-read.test.ts fail on main. Self-reviewed: 35 concerns raised, 29 addressed.

Background

Downsides

  • Behavior change on POSIX: a sliced read no longer moves the descriptor. slice(n).text(), then fs.writeSync(fd), overwrites the head and does not append. Remove libuv on Windows #42819 leaves this question open.
  • Not fixed: a slice at byte 0, a start past the end, Windows.
  • Cost at byte 0: +2 conditional jumps per Bun.file(path).text(), 0 per fs.readFileSync. A FormData part that still seeks pays one more fstat. Text: +1,280 bytes.
Notes

What a program sees. File 0123456789abcdefghij, Linux x64, release builds of main (179664e) and of this branch.

399 concurrent slice(a, b).text() of one descriptor, every start past byte 0 wrong bytes in 8 of 150 runs (up to 147 reads), descriptor moved in 150 0 of 50 runs, descriptor moved in 0

Rows 4 to 8 are the behavior change in Downsides, in both directions. On main a program that writes in order and reads another range in between has its next write moved (row 4). With this PR a program that reads a tail with slice(n).text() and then appends with fs.writeSync(fd) on the same descriptor overwrites the head of the file (row 5).

Where the seek comes from. #7470 (Bun v1.0.16) replaced aio.read(fd, buf, offset + read_off) with read and setFileOffset(fd, offset). The read was at the offset before that. Nothing in the tracker asks for the moved descriptor, and no issue reports it. One public project ran into the race and moved to fs.read with positions, with the comment "Bun.file(fd).slice() shares the descriptor cursor" (Quake-Anthology-TS fe9d5ee). await slice.stream().text() and fs.read(fd, buf, 0, n, position) already read at an offset on released versions.

The rule. slice_reads_with_pread is is_regular && offset > 0 && offset <= st_size. ReadFile decides once, from the fstat it already makes. read_file_with_options calls a cold helper, pread_slice, inside its existing if args.offset > 0 arm.

  • At or before the end, lseek always succeeds on main, so pread gives the same bytes.
  • Past the end the result on main depends on the file system. Bun.file(path).slice(-6) of a file whose size is not known yet has offset 2^52 - 7. ext4 refuses that seek (its limit is 2^44 - 4096) and the read starts at the position: 012345 for a path, and slice(-100) gives the whole file. tmpfs takes the seek and the read is empty. pread there returns nothing on every file system. So a start past the end keeps main's statements, and every start in an empty file or a procfs file (st_size 0) is such a start.
  • After Blob.slice: resolve an unknown file size before counting a negative index from the end #46633 or Bun.file().slice(): count a negative index back from the file's real end #41257 makes slice(-n) count from the real end, the bound can go in one line. A start above the seek limit of the file system then reads as empty, which is what .stream() gives today. A review of this change preferred that order (index fix first, then this with no bound). Neither PR is on main, so this PR keeps the bound and has no test row on slice(-n): an exact row would fail on the day one of them lands.
  • pread_slice reserves once: the slice, at most 16 bytes past st_size, and at most 8 GiB. That is the buffer of read_file_with_options for a slice, and both now use one constant (READ_FILE_RESERVE_MAX). A window across the st_size of /proc/kcore is 10 bytes on main and here. It always issues one pread, so an empty slice of a descriptor that cannot be read still rejects with EBADF. A failed pread keeps syscall: "read".
  • A pread that answers ESPIPE falls back to the read in order, at both sites. That is a regular file with no offsets, for example FUSE with FOPEN_NONSEEKABLE. Main ignores the failed seek there and reads from the position, as it does for a pipe.

Not changed here.

  • A slice at byte 0 and an unsliced Bun.file(fd) read from the position and move it. That is question 2 in the Notes of Read a regular-file stdin from its position in process.stdin and Bun.stdin.stream() #46700 and the TODO in do_read of Remove libuv on Windows #42819 ("find out how much relies on either before making them one"). After this PR a start past byte 0 does not move the descriptor and a start at byte 0 does. A chunk loop over one descriptor that includes chunk 0 is still wrong under concurrency.
  • Windows. ReadFileUV seeks before it reads at the offset, and Remove libuv on Windows #42819 replaces it. Its Windows-only test Bun.file(fd).slice() reads its range whatever the descriptor's position is expects { sliced: "234", again: "234", next: "345" }. POSIX gives that with this PR and next: "567" on main. A Windows FormData part and fetch body also seek. No open PR changes that. The new branch is #[cfg(not(windows))] because a read at an offset moves the file pointer on Windows (libuv moves it back afterwards).
  • A start past the end still seeks (see the rule).
  • ReadFile.read_off never advances on POSIX, so a read after a short read asks for too much. Bun.stdin.slice(0, 3).text() over a pipe that delivers 01 and then 23456789 returns 01234 on main and here. The pread takes its offset from the bytes already in the buffer and does not need read_off. Remove libuv on Windows #42819 has the line that advances it.
  • Other consumers of a Bun.file(fd) slice read through the descriptor and do not apply the offset at all, for example the source of Bun.write. Honor Bun.file().slice() bounds in Bun.write #41209 and Bun.write(file, file): copy the source's slice, and don't let the destination's offset shorten it #46634 add a seek on that source descriptor in copy_file.rs. That is the statement this PR removes from the two readers.
  • A FormData part or a fetch body above 8 GiB still stops at 8 GiB (fetch() over TLS silently truncates a Bun.file() request body at 8 GiB (Content-Length 8589934592) #46495), at byte 0 and past it.
  • macOS and FreeBSD: open("/dev/fd/N") duplicates descriptor N, so a Bun.file("/dev/fd/N") slice shares the position of N. The rule reads fstat and not the path, so it covers that case. By the kernel documentation, not run.

Measurements. Release builds of 179664e with and without the commit, Linux x64. strace, perf, valgrind and bloaty are not installed here. Syscalls come from a small ptrace counter that matches the file by path. Instruction counts come from gdb stepping one call of the function, with calls stepped over.

Syscalls on the file, main and then this PR:

Read main this PR

FormData part of a FIFO slice, and of fd slice(2 ** 45, 2 ** 45 + 6) fstat, lseek, read 2 one more fstat

Tests. The new tests are in their own describe.skipIf(isWindows), because #42819 removes the skip of the outer block. They run concurrently. With the start rule changed, rows fail: without offset > 0 the byte 0 row, without the bound the two slice(30, 40) rows, without the read tag 4 rows, and if pread_slice skips the pread of an empty slice 1 row. is_regular has a row only where a FIFO reports its buffered bytes as st_size (macOS). On Linux a FIFO and /dev/zero report 0. The ESPIPE arm, the 8 GiB cap and the 16 bytes past st_size have no row.

After review. The second and third commits answer the review threads.

  • pread_slice had no cap and followed a file that grows. It now reserves once, with the cap and the 16 bytes of the other loop.
  • A pread that answers ESPIPE rejected the read. Both sites now read in order, as main does.
  • The procfs rows compared a literal with itself outside Linux. They are a Linux-only test now.
  • slice_reads_with_pread takes u64. The mordant job failed on a BlobSizeType passed as a SizeType.
  • The FIFO comes from the mkfifo test helper, and the procfs test uses isLinux (third commit).
  • Not changed: the descriptor stays where it was after a sliced read, and a slice at byte 0 reads from the position. Both are the decisions in Downsides.

Considered.

  • pread for every regular file: the design this started from. It changes the ext4 results above.
  • A bound of max(file size, 2^31 - 1), the smallest seek limit of any Linux file system. It stops the seek for an ordinary start past the end. It put a Linux constant into the macOS reader and needed test rows that depend on the file system.
  • pread and then lseek(fd, offset + n). It removes the race and keeps where main leaves the descriptor. It keeps the side effect that the report is about, and a test cannot tell it from main.
  • One positional reader under both loops of read_file_with_options. It adds a test to each read of fs.readFile.
  • Bun.file(fd): use pread so bytes match fstat-derived size #33873 made every Bun.file(fd) read positional, also at byte 0. The stale bot closed it without a review. The ReadFile half of this PR is that mechanism, limited to a start past byte 0.

Self-review. Of the 35 concerns, these are not taken:

Suites run with bun bd test on this branch: bun-file-fd-read (also with TMPDIR on tmpfs), bun-stdin-slice, bun-file-read, bun-file, FormData, FormData-multipart-serialization, FormData-file-error-leak, structured-clone-blob-file, fetch/body, fetch/blob, fetch/body-clone, fetch-file-upload, blob-write, bun-write, bun-serve-file. Two tests exceeded the 5 s limit in some runs of their whole file on the debug build and pass alone: Bun.file(0) survives GC in bun-write and string body consumption does not leak > Response.json in fetch/body. Neither reads a file slice.

no test proof · iteration 0 · platform-specific test(s) that do not run on this machine, deferring to CI, which covers all platforms: test/js/bun/util/bun-file-fd-read.test.ts

…ptor

A one-shot read of a file Blob slice that starts past byte 0 called
lseek(fd, offset) and then read(2). For Bun.file(fd) and Bun.stdin that
moved the caller's descriptor, and two such reads on one descriptor
raced on the shared position.

POSIX ReadFile and NodeFS::read_file_with_options (a FormData part, a
fetch body) now read a slice that starts inside a regular file, or at
its end, with pread at the offset. A start past the end, a pipe and a
device keep the seek, so the bytes of those reads do not change.

Status. Reproduced on main (179664e, Linux x64, ext4 and tmpfs).

  • Position: fd = fs.openSync(p, "r"), fs.readSync(fd, Buffer.alloc(5)), await Bun.file(fd).slice(2, 6).text(). The next fs.readSync(fd, buf) starts at byte 6 on main. On this branch it starts at byte 5.
  • Race: 399 concurrent Bun.file(fd).slice(a, b).text() calls on one descriptor, every start past byte 0. Main returns the bytes of another slice in 8 of 150 runs. This branch: 0 of 50.
  • Tests: bun bd test test/js/bun/util/bun-file-fd-read.test.ts. The 5 new tests that cover the change fail on main and pass on this branch.

Walkthrough

Non-Windows sliced reads use pread for eligible regular files without changing the descriptor position. Node file reads try a bounded pread slice for eligible buffer reads. Tests cover read results and descriptor positions across consumers and file types.

Explanation

The title names the main behavior change: sliced reads of a Bun.file() descriptor use pread and no longer seek the descriptor. The raw summary and objectives confirm the change covers ReadFile and read_file_with_options on POSIX, so the title matches the changeset. It is a single sentence of 11 words, which is concise. The colon-separated form is slightly dense, but it stays specific and readable.

Full details: Description check

Explanation

The description follows the required template with both headings present: 'What does this PR do?' is covered by the Problem, Fix, and Background sections, and 'How did you verify your code works?' is covered by the Fix verification line, the probe tables, the measurements, and the Tests and Suites sections. It is very long, and the main body is dense. Its verification also relies on platform-specific tests that cannot run locally. The bot evidence block flags this and defers to CI for those tests.

Beyond the inline findings, I also checked the memory handling in pread_slice and the ReadFile loop: the Buffer::from_bytes ownership transfer matches the existing into_raw return in read_file_with_options, max_size - read cannot underflow because the loop breaks once bytes.len() >= max_size, and already_read is taken from buffer.len() after both the heap and stack-copy paths append to it, so the pread offset stays consistent across short reads.

Extended reasoning...

The change touches the POSIX read path for Bun.file slices in src/runtime/webcore/blob/read_file.rs and the FormData/fetch-body path in src/runtime/node/node_fs.rs, replacing lseek+read with pread, plus a new test block. It touches no auth, crypto, or injection surface. Five verified findings are posted inline (a user-visible behavior change for r+ descriptors, the lost 8 GiB cap, FOPEN_NONSEEKABLE regression, a vacuous macOS test row, and the byte-0 split rule), so a human needs to weigh the behavior change; this note only records the memory-safety points that were examined and ruled out.

Findings marked 🟡 are optional suggestions and need no follow-up push.

…no offsets

- pread_slice reserves once: the slice, at most 16 bytes past st_size and at
most READ_FILE_RESERVE_MAX, which the buffer of read_file_with_options now
uses too. It does not follow a file that grows.
- A pread that fails with ESPIPE falls back to the read in order at both
sites, as the ignored seek did.
- slice_reads_with_pread takes u64.
- Tests: the independent tests run concurrently, and the procfs rows are a
  Linux-only test.

Commit a885a0a now caps the pread_slice reserve with the shared READ_FILE_RESERVE_MAX, falls back to the in-order read on ESPIPE at both sites, and moves the procfs rows into a Linux-only test. Beyond the two inline nits, I also checked the string_type == Default guard against the encoding == Buffer debug assertion in pread_slice — both callers that pass an offset (Blob.rs:3611, fetch.rs:1616) set Encoding::Buffer, so no text-encoding caller reaches it today — and the offset + already_read cast to i64, which is bounded by offset <= st_size <= 2^52.

Extended reasoning...

The second push changes only the two Rust sites and the test file; it addresses the reserve cap, growth, and ESPIPE points raised on the first version. The remaining open point is the deliberate POSIX behavior change for read-then-write on one descriptor, which is now encoded in the test "leaves the next write where the descriptor was" and is a product decision rather than a code defect.

Findings marked 🟡 are optional suggestions and need no follow-up push.

The two remaining tests of the block run concurrently too, and the write
test has a row for a read between two writes.

I re-reviewed the two follow-up commits and found no bugs; the earlier nits (8 GiB reserve cap, ESPIPE fallback, procfs gating, mkfifo helper) are addressed in the code. A maintainer should still make the call on the intentional POSIX semantics change, which is a product decision rather than a correctness one.

What was reviewed:

  • pread_slice buffer ownership: Vec -> into_boxed_slice -> heap::into_raw -> Buffer::from_bytes, matching the existing returns of read_file_with_options, and both callers (FormData in Blob.rs, fetch body in fetch.rs) release it with buf.destroy() as before.
  • Offset arithmetic: offset <= st_size is enforced by the predicate before (offset + read) as i64, so the position cast cannot overflow; limit is bounded by max_size, st_size - offset + 16 and READ_FILE_RESERVE_MAX.
  • ReadFile::do_read: already_read is buffer.len() taken before remaining_buffer, so it is correct on both the heap and stack-buffer branches; EINTR is retried inside bun_sys::pread.
  • Both callers that set args.offset > 0 use Encoding::Buffer, so the debug_assert in pread_slice holds for every current caller.
Extended reasoning...

The change touches the POSIX read paths of ReadFile (src/runtime/webcore/blob/read_file.rs) and NodeFS::read_file_with_options (src/runtime/node/node_fs.rs) so a Bun.file slice past byte 0 is read with pread and no longer moves the shared descriptor, plus a new POSIX-only test block. No security-sensitive surface (auth, crypto, injection) is involved; the memory-ownership and size arithmetic in the new code were checked and match the neighboring returns. Deferring rather than approving because the PR deliberately changes user-visible behavior on POSIX (a sliced read no longer advances the descriptor, so a later positional write lands at the old position), the thread raising that is still open, and the Windows twin is intentionally left seeking; whether to accept that split is a maintainer decision.
