Throw instead of returning "" when bytes cannot be copied into a JS string - #46984
new TextDecoder().decode(bytes) returns "", not an error, for 2^31 ASCII bytes or more and when the string allocation fails. Node throws ERR_STRING_TOO_LONG and ERR_MEMORY_ALLOCATION_FAILED.
Cause: jsString(vm, Zig::toStringCopy(slice)) (src/jsc/bindings/bindings.cpp:3766, 7 more lines). toStringCopy returns the null string for both failures, and jsString maps it to "". process.env, Blob.type and prompt() share it.
Fix
Zig::tryToStringCopy reports the reason, Bun::toJS(globalObject, slice) throws it, and EncodedSlice::to_js returns JsResult. A failed allocation took the same road as a too-long string. Each now has its error.
Verified: test/js/node/buffer-oom.test.ts and test/js/web/encoding/text-decoder.test.js (release main fails 7 of 7 and 2 of 3). Also the encoding and FormData suites.
Self-reviewed: 34 concerns raised, 31 addressed. Not taken: a fallible UTF-8 converter and a std::expected return (10 other callers change), the Windows env write path (cannot run it).
Code that got "" now gets an exception. While one variable cannot be copied, {...process.env} and inherited-environment spawns throw, as in Node.
Against main: -5 to +4 instructions per ASCII decode, +11 to +24 per request.referrer, $.braces, blob.type or uncached process.env read. .text grows 1,280 bytes.
UTF-8 bytes under 2^30 still end the process when their allocation fails.
Notes
What throws now.ERR_STRING_TOO_LONG for a string over the length limit, ERR_MEMORY_ALLOCATION_FAILED (a RangeError) for a failed allocation:
TextDecoder.decode of all-ASCII input (utf-8 and latin1, with and without stream, fatal), and TextDecoderStream. A streamed UTF-8 chunk that throws for its length or for memory leaves the decoder as it was before the call: the BOM is not spent, and the bytes that the chunk carried are put back.
process.env reads, the TZ, NODE_TLS_REJECT_UNAUTHORIZED and BUN_CONFIG_VERBOSE_FETCH getters included. A failed read is not cached as the value.
Multipart formData() field names, values and file names.
Bun.password.hash rejects its promise. A TLS handshake ends with tlsClientError when the server cannot copy the name that the client sent, for SNICallback or for ALPNCallback. The process goes on.
Reach. No user reported this. Zig::toStringCopy has returned the null string since de1e963 (2022-10-15). The too-long half reaches every platform: the input needs address space, not memory. The failed-allocation half shows only where the OS refuses the request (RLIMIT_AS, RLIMIT_DATA, vm.overcommit_memory=2, the Windows commit limit). Under a cgroup memory limit the kernel kills both builds. Windows was not run.
Tests and where they run.
Every lane: the length-limit rows in buffer-oom.test.ts and text-decoder.test.js. BUN_FEATURE_FLAG_SYNTHETIC_MEMORY_LIMIT lowers the limit (1 MiB for most rows, 30 or 100 characters for process.argv0, Bun.password.hash and the TLS callbacks). Zig::tryToStringCopy now honours it in the Latin-1 and UTF-16 arms, as its UTF-8 arm and the sibling makers do.
Every Linux lane: decode of 2^31 bytes throws (the child peaks at 31 MiB), and a failed allocation under ulimit -v 1048576 gives ERR_MEMORY_ALLOCATION_FAILED (main gives ""). That test passed 1100 of 1100 runs on a release build, 800 of them with 8 in parallel.
The ASAN lane: the failed-allocation rows under ASAN_OPTIONS=allocator_may_return_null=1:max_allocation_size_mb=40.
Debug builds only (no CI lane): the rows under BUN_JSC_maxSingleAllocationSize, which debug WTF alone has.
test/internal/source-lints/js-string-of-string-copy.test.ts bans the one-line expression jsString(..toStringCopy(..)) (8 on main, 0 here). It does not see a copy that goes through a local.
BUN_JSC_validateExceptionChecks=1 is clean on both test files and on the FormData, Blob, Request and headers suites. bun run rust:check-all passes for all 12 targets.
Cost.
Release builds, Linux x64: main is 449877f, move is main with only jsString(vm, WTF::move(copy)) in EncodedSlice__toValueGC, PR is this branch. Instructions are user-space counts from perf_event_open, taken as (count(4N) - count(N)) / 3N in fresh processes on one core, with BUN_JSC_useConcurrentJIT=0 BUN_JSC_useConcurrentGC=0. Median of 5 interleaved rounds. A/A (main against a copy of the same binary) is 0.00% to 0.11%.
The 12,288 B rows move by about 15 between runs of one binary, with the alignment of the buffers.
Where the instructions go: the copy itself is +3 (the limit compare and the reason). A getter that now returns JsResult is one function that is no longer inlined (Blob::get_type, 29 instructions). A C++ caller of Bun::toJS(globalObject, slice) has one more call than the inline jsString had. A transcoded decode checks the length of its result before it changes the decoder (+3).
Cycles (cycles:u, same runs, A/A 0.1% to 3.3% for the 64 B rows): 64 B decode 211.0 to 183.7 (utf-8) and 207.9 to 175.9 (latin1), arrayBufferToString(u8) 193.6 to 157.7, blob.type 152.1 to 125.9, request.referrer 249.8 to 211.9, the env getter 170.9 to 173.7, formData() 3593.2 to 3542.5. The drop is not the checked copy. The copy is now moved into jsString, which removes a ref and deref pair. The move build has the same drop (64 B utf-8 decode 183.7).
Host function entry to return, single-stepped in gdb, 64 B ASCII: decode utf-8 324 to 320 instructions, decode latin1 281 to 284, arrayBufferToString 271 to 271. The calls are 7, 7 and 6 on both builds. Lock-prefixed instructions go from 2 to 0.
mi_malloc, mi_zalloc, mi_calloc and mi_realloc calls per 64 B ASCII decode (gdb breakpoint counts at N and 4N): 1.002 on both.
Wall clock, default JSC options, median of 10 interleaved runs on one core: a 12 B ASCII decode takes 37.7 ns on main and 32.4 ns here (A/A 1.1%, move 32.7 ns). 12,288 B: 505.2 ns on both (A/A 0.5%).
Binary: .text 82,164,617 to 82,165,897 bytes (llvm-size -A). The stripped file is 107,730,656 bytes on both.
More on the behavior change.
delete process.env.NAME or an assignment to it ends the failure.
An integer-named variable is read when process.env is made. While its value cannot be copied, every process.env read throws, and JavaScript cannot delete it.
Bun.spawn with the inherited environment reads the variables in Rust. It does not throw.
Not taken from the self-review.
A fallible UTF-8 converter. Zig::convertUTF8ToString sends UTF-8 bytes under 2^30 to String::fromUTF8ReplacingInvalidSequences, which ends the process when its allocation fails. prompt() on a 134,209,536-byte line under ulimit -v 606208 dies at 0xBBADBEEF on main and here. A fix in the converter changes what 10 other toStringCopy callers get (a null string where the process ended), so it is its own change. The comments and src/CLAUDE.md state the exception.
The Windows process.env write path (ProcessObjectInternals.ts) reads the old value through the getter before it stores. A Windows environment value is at most 32,767 characters, so only a failed allocation of under 64 KiB reaches it. I cannot run Windows.
A std::expected return for Zig::tryToStringCopy and the deletion of toStringCopy(EncodedSlice). Its 10 other callers (BunString::toWTFString, the FFI symbol names, a DOMException message, toIdentifier) have no error path yet.
Left as they are.
jsString(vm, x.toWTFString()) in Bun__JSValue__bind (static names), BakeProduction.cpp:30 (an output path) and NodeDirent.cpp:351 (a directory entry, at most PATH_MAX bytes). BunProcess.cpp:1754 takes a WTF-backed string.
The borrowed arm of BunString::transferToJS throws now. os.homedir() reaches it with the bytes of $HOME. No test reaches it, because no cap is as low as a path.
The 29 jsString(..String::fromUTF8(..)) expressions. They make "" for ill-formed UTF-8, which is a different cause.
bindgen: delete b.any and .variadic #46789 shares 22 files, 4 with conflicts. It moves parse_pkcs12 to create_latin1_string (3 calls), which need ? after this PR. I rebase this PR when it lands.
…tring
`new TextDecoder().decode(bytes)` returned "" with no error when the string
could not be made: for 2^31 bytes or more of ASCII, and for a failed
allocation. Both took the same road. `jsString(vm, Zig::toStringCopy(slice))`
maps the null string of a refused copy to the empty string.
`Zig::tryToStringCopy` now reports why it made no string, with the Dead and
OutOfMemory tags that BunString has. `Bun::toJS(global, slice)` throws
ERR_STRING_TOO_LONG or ERR_MEMORY_ALLOCATION_FAILED for them, and
`EncodedSlice__tryToJS` returns them unthrown. `EncodedSliceJsc::to_js` returns
`JsResult`. `JsHeap::create_latin1_string` returns its error unthrown, so that
TextDecoder throws after its `&mut` borrow ends.
The same copy is behind Bun.unsafe.arrayBufferToString, TextDecoderStream,
prompt(), process.env reads, Blob.type, Request.referrer, multipart FormData
fields and `String::to_js` of borrowed bytes. They throw too.
How I reproduced it, on a release build of main 449877f (Linux x64):
bun -e 'console.log(new TextDecoder().decode(new Uint8Array(2**31)).length)' prints 0. This PR throws ERR_STRING_TOO_LONG. Node v26.3.0 throws the same error.
A failed allocation takes the same road. Under ulimit -v 1048576, a decode of an all-ASCII buffer that takes 60% of the free address space prints 0. This PR throws ERR_MEMORY_ALLOCATION_FAILED, as Node does. test/js/node/buffer-oom.test.ts has that case.

Walkthrough
Encoded-slice conversion now reports oversized-input and allocation failures. JSC bindings and runtime callers propagate conversion errors or use bounded conversion in callback paths. The changes also add tests for string-length limits, allocation failures, and decoder behavior after failure.

String-copy helpers classify failure tags, and the JSC bridge maps conversion failures to JavaScript errors. The conversion guidance describes fallible and bounded conversion paths.
JSC binding methods and native string getters use fallible conversion and propagate conversion errors. The Latin-1 bindgen test enables throwing behavior.
Runtime conversion and error propagation src/runtime/api/*, src/runtime/crypto/*, src/runtime/node/node_process.rs, src/runtime/socket/*, src/runtime/webcore/*
Runtime APIs and callbacks propagate conversion errors or use bounded conversion. Blob type and Request referrer getter descriptors are configured to throw.
Tests cover allocation failures, string-length limits, decoder state after failures, and direct string-copy-to-JavaScript patterns.

Explanation
The title "Throw instead of returning "" when bytes cannot be copied into a JS string" matches the main change. The changeset makes EncodedSlice::to_js return JsResult, adds Bun::toJS and Zig::tryToStringCopy failure reporting, and makes TextDecoder, process.env, Blob.type, and related APIs throw ERR_STRING_TOO_LONG or ERR_MEMORY_ALLOCATION_FAILED instead of returning an empty string. The title is specific and reads clearly in history. It is slightly long at 74 characters, but it is acceptable.

Explanation
The description does not follow the repository template exactly. The template has two sections, "What does this PR do?" and "How did you verify your code works?", and the author used "Problem", "Fix", "Background", "Downsides", and a details block instead. The content still covers both template topics in substance. The Problem and Fix sections explain what the PR does, and the Verified and Self-reviewed bullets, along with the test names and commands, explain how the code was verified. The description is thorough and technically specific. Only the template headings differ.

The SNICallback and ALPNCallback trampolines and the `Bun.password.hash` job
used `to_js_bounded`, which ends the process when the copy fails. Each has an
error path: a TLS handshake that ends, a promise that rejects. They take it.
The UTF-8 decoder committed "BOM seen" and the partial sequence of a chunk
before it made the string of a transcoded chunk, which can be too long. It
checks that length first, so a chunk that throws leaves neither behind.

Re-checked after b6a0cb0. Beyond the inline nit, I looked at the three fixes in that push and found nothing further: the SNI and ALPN trampolines now route a refused name copy through global.take_exception into the same handshake-abort path as a throwing callback; Bun.password.hash settles its promise from the JsResult; and the UTF-8 streaming arm checks decoded.len() against the string limit before writing bom_seen and buffered, so a chunk that throws leaves no state behind. The process.argv0/execPath and JSEnvironmentVariableMap threads are not touched by this push.
Extended reasoning...
The new commit b6a0cb0 changes src/runtime/socket/Listener.rs, src/runtime/socket/socket_body.rs, src/runtime/crypto/PasswordObject.rs and src/runtime/webcore/TextDecoder.rs to take an error path instead of to_js_bounded, plus tests and src/CLAUDE.md wording. Two earlier inline threads (LUT PropertyCallback builders storing an empty JSValue; the eager env-map copy) have no corresponding code change in this push, and the change remains a wide refactor of string-copy error handling across TLS, env and decoder surfaces, so a human look is still warranted.
Findings marked 🟡 are optional suggestions and need no follow-up push.

The UTF-8 arm joins the partial sequence of the last chunk to this chunk and
clears it. When this chunk then throws for its length or for memory, the
sequence is put back, so the decoder is as it was before the call. A chunk
that ends the stream does not put it back.
