Cut the Rust DOMExceptionCode to the codes Rust sends and pin them from C++ - #47055
DOMExceptionCode (src/jsc/JSErrorCode.rs) was a hand-written copy of the C++ enum ExceptionCode (src/jsc/bindings/ExceptionCode.h), numbered by position in both files. Nothing compared them. The copy had 41 of the 43 names.
No program is affected: Rust sends one code, TypeMismatchError (src/runtime/webcore/Crypto.rs:39). Found by inspection.
The Rust enum lists only the values Rust sends, with their numbers: TypeMismatchError = 13. bindings.cpp asserts that number and the one-byte size. A header change that moves the value fails the C++ build and names the Rust item.
A source lint requires a number and that exact static_assert for each variant.
Verified: test/internal/source-lints/dom-exception-code-pins.test.ts. Also web-crypto.test.ts and test-webcrypto-random.js.
Self-reviewed: 13 concerns raised, 13 addressed. The review replaced a generated enum with this shape.
Background
C++ passes an ExceptionCode to createDOMException to select the error class. Rust sends one through throw_dom_exception and never receives one.
A PR that appends a C++ code no longer edits the Rust file.
The lint runs in the Source lints job. A variant with no assert compiles locally.
Notes
Measurements (linux-x64, base c643ea8c2a)
Runtime: crypto.getRandomValues(new Float32Array(4)) throws DOMException, name TypeMismatchError, code 17, on the debug build of this PR, on bun 1.4.3-canary.1 and on node v26.3.0.
Throw path: a reduced copy of the crossing compiles to 3 instructions and 17 bytes of .text, against 4 and 20 at base (rustc 1.100.0-nightly, -C opt-level=3, objdump -d). The immediate stays 0xd. With one variant, rustc loads the constant in the callee and the caller passes nothing.
Release binary size: not measured. This environment had no release pair of the base and the PR, and it cannot reach the CI artifact store. The diff adds two static_asserts and removes 40 unused enum variants. Neither has code or data.
Build graph: no new edge, no generated file. A header edit recompiles 0 Rust crates, as before.
The asserts, compiled against scratch copies of the header: a tail append passes with no Rust edit. An enumerator inserted before index 13 fails. A swap of 12 and 13 fails. : uint16_t fails the size assert. A wrong pin (== 12) fails under the real compile command of bindings.cpp.
The lint, run on scratch trees: it fails on the sources of main, on a variant with no assert, on an assert with another number, on an assert for a name the enum does not have, on a variant with no number, on a removed assert, on a removed size assert and on a Rust enum that is not #[repr(u8)]. It passes with two pinned variants, with a brace in a variant comment and with an attribute on a variant.
The repr: rustc rejects the enum with no repr (improper_ctypes, the enum is a parameter of an extern block). It accepts #[repr(u16)] and #[repr(C)], so the lint requires #[repr(u8)].
Who sends what. On main Rust names TypeMismatchError only. Open PRs name four more: AbortError (16) and OperationError (30) in #42768, DataCloneError (21) in #37905, NotReadableError (23) in #43896. All five are among the first 32 names, the WebIDL DOMException names. The five appends to the C++ enum since 2022 are all at the tail.
The shape the self-review replaced. The first version generated the Rust enum from the header: a codegen script with a ninja edge, a check in build.rs, a cppbind type mapping and 19 generator tests (12 files, +302 -440). It was built and measured: 43 of 43 generated numbers equal to clang's, 13 of 118 Rust crates recompiled per enum append, 0 per comment-only edit. Its advantage is that a sender needs no pin. Its costs are the build edge, a text parser for a C++ header, and 42 variants that no Rust code uses. test/internal/source-lints/dead-code-escapes.test.ts states the rule for those: "used nowhere: delete it". I can push that version if a maintainer prefers it.
Two review points not taken as written. One concern asked to keep the u8 parameter of the extern and another asked to type it with the enum. The enum is used: Rust is the only producer, as in CommonAbortReason.rs. One concern said the pin needs no lint and another said not to ship it without one. The lint is included.
Not done
hawk was not run on this shape. The 40 deleted overrides name variants that no longer exist.
Other hand copies of C++ enums are not changed. HeaderName, BuiltinName, TestStatus, the NativePromiseContext tag and Encoding have the same names in the same order as their C++ enums today (checked by script).
…rom C++
DOMExceptionCode was a hand-written copy of the C++ enum ExceptionCode,
numbered by position, with 41 of the 43 names and no check against the
header. Rust sends one of those codes, TypeMismatchError.
The Rust enum now lists that one value with its number. bindings.cpp
asserts the number and the one-byte size against the C++ enum, so a
change to the header that moves the value fails to compile and names the
Rust item. The extern takes the enum, not a u8. A source lint requires
the number and the assert for each variant. The 40 hawk.toml overrides
for the deleted variants are removed.
Status: ready for review. The diff is green. The one red CI job is on a lane that this change does not touch.
How the problem was confirmed on main: a script counted both lists. The C++ enum ExceptionCode has 43 names and the Rust DOMExceptionCode had 41. The first 41 match in order. EVENT_RECURSION and WORKER_INVALID_EXEC_ARGV had no Rust name. A grep finds one Rust use of a variant (TypeMismatchError in src/runtime/webcore/Crypto.rs:39) and no Rust code that makes the enum from a number.
The new lint (test/internal/source-lints/dom-exception-code-pins.test.ts) fails on the sources of main and passes on this branch. It passed in the Source lints job on every push.
CI, two runs of the same code. Each of the 181 jobs passed in at least one of them:
Build 133726 (e6d0a36b26, an empty commit on the same code): 180 of 181 jobs passed. The red job is windows x64 - verify-baseline. One test of test/js/bun/jsc-stress/fixtures/simd-baseline.test.ts (JPEG gradient round trip) timed out after 5000 ms under Nehalem emulation, with 0 instruction failures. The same job passed in build 133618.
The two red tests (simd-baseline.test.ts, and test/js/bun/net/socket.test.ts on darwin x64 in build 133618) are reported to main-break triage. I will not start another CI run.
❌ Baseline verification failed on Windows x64 — 1 check(s)
The baseline build crashed or failed tests under Nehalem (SSE4.2, no AVX/AVX2/AVX512) emulation (not an unsupported-instruction fault). See the step log for the crash output.

Walkthrough
The Rust DOMExceptionCode enum now contains only TypeMismatchError = 13. C++ compile-time assertions and a source-lint test check the exception-code contract. The Rust FFI declaration accepts DOMExceptionCode directly.

Summary
Pin the exception-code values src/jsc/JSErrorCode.rs, src/jsc/bindings/ExceptionCode.h, src/jsc/bindings/bindings.cpp, test/internal/source-lints/dom-exception-code-pins.test.ts, hawk.toml
The Rust enum retains only TypeMismatchError = 13. C++ assertions check the enum size and value. The source-lint test checks numbered variants and matching assertions. Hawk no longer has dead-public exceptions configured for the removed variants.
Pass the enum through the FFI src/jsc/EncodedSlice.rs
The FFI declaration accepts DOMExceptionCode, and to_dom_exception_instance passes the code without casting it to u8.

Nothing blocking. The comments below are optional suggestions. There is no need to push a fix for them before merging.
Beyond the inline findings, I also checked the u8 -> DOMExceptionCode extern change in src/jsc/EncodedSlice.rs: a single-variant #[repr(u8)] enum and enum ExceptionCode : uint8_t are both one-byte integer-class parameters on every target, and a repo grep shows Rust only ever produces the value (src/runtime/webcore/Crypto.rs:39) and never receives one back, so the narrowed enum cannot be fed an out-of-range byte. hawk.toml has no remaining override naming the deleted variants.
Extended reasoning...
The change narrows a hand-mirrored Rust enum in src/jsc/JSErrorCode.rs to the one variant Rust sends, types the extern parameter with it, adds two static_asserts in src/jsc/bindings/bindings.cpp, drops 40 hawk.toml dead-code overrides, and adds a source-lint test. It touches the FFI boundary for DOMException creation but no auth, crypto logic, or untrusted-input parsing. Two confirmed findings about the lint's coverage are posted inline, so a human look is already signalled; this note only records the FFI ABI and receiver-path checks that were ruled out.
…d attributes in the enum body
The lint did not name the static_assert that holds the C++ enum to one
byte, so that assert could be deleted with every test green. It now
requires that line beside the per-variant asserts.
The enum body was matched up to the first closing brace anywhere, so a
brace inside a comment made the lint fail with no variant named. The
body now ends at the closing brace of the enum, and an attribute line on
a variant is not read as a variant.

LGTM — the follow-up commit addresses both earlier inline points, and the enum cut plus static_assert pins check out against the header.
What was reviewed:
TypeMismatchError = 13 against ExceptionCode.h: IndexSizeError is 0, TypeMismatchError is the 14th enumerator, so 13 is right; the extern "C" parameter is a fieldless #[repr(u8)] enum on the Rust side and enum ExceptionCode : uint8_t on the C++ side, with the sizeof assert pinning the width.
Every DOMExceptionCode consumer (Crypto.rs, EncodedSlice.rs, JSGlobalObject.rs) only names TypeMismatchError; no match arms or hawk overrides reference the deleted variants.
The lint now includes the sizeof assert in expected, splits on \r?\n, skips ///#[...] lines, anchors the enum body at ^}, and guards against an empty/missing body, so it cannot pass vacuously.
Extended reasoning...
The change shrinks the Rust DOMExceptionCode mirror of WebCore::ExceptionCode to the single value Rust sends, gives it an explicit discriminant, types the extern "C" parameter with the enum, adds two static_asserts in bindings.cpp, drops 40 now-dead hawk overrides, and adds a source-lint test that requires one assert per variant. It touches the FFI boundary for DOMException creation but no auth, crypto logic, or untrusted-input parsing. Approving because the diff is small and self-contained, the one call site and the header value were verified directly, the two findings from the prior review were fixed in ae9933b, no CODEOWNERS entry covers the changed paths, and the bug hunt ran dry without new findings.

rustc rejects the enum with no repr, because it is a parameter of an
extern block. It accepts the enum with a wider repr, and then Rust
passes a value of another size than the one byte that bindings.cpp
asserts for the C++ enum. The lint now requires the attribute.

I re-reviewed the PR after the two follow-up commits and found no bugs; both points from my earlier inline comments are now handled in the lint (the sizeof assert is part of the compared set, and the enum body is matched up to the closing-brace line with comment/attribute lines skipped). Because this replaces a full mirrored enum with a hand-pinned subset and changes an extern "C" parameter type, a maintainer's look at the chosen shape is still worthwhile.
What was reviewed:
TypeMismatchError = 13 against the position in src/jsc/bindings/ExceptionCode.h (index 13, with IndexSizeError at 0) and the two static_asserts in src/jsc/bindings/bindings.cpp.
The EncodedSlice__toDOMExceptionInstance extern now taking the #[repr(u8)] enum against the C++ definition's WebCore::ExceptionCode (: uint8_t) parameter — same width on both sides.
Removed variants: the only Rust producer is src/runtime/webcore/Crypto.rs:39; JSGlobalObject.rs passes the enum through without matching on it.
The lint's regexes for CRLF, trailing comments, and ////#[...] lines inside the enum body.
Extended reasoning...
The change shrinks the Rust DOMExceptionCode enum to the single variant Rust sends, pins its value and one-byte width via static_asserts in bindings.cpp, retypes the extern "C" parameter from u8 to the repr(u8) enum, drops 320 lines of hawk dead_public overrides, and adds a source lint tying each variant to a static_assert. It touches no security-sensitive surface; the only runtime effect is the TypeMismatchError DOMException path in crypto.getRandomValues, which is unchanged in value. Defer rather than approve because the PR makes a design choice (hand-pinned subset versus a generated mirror, with in-flight PRs that will need rebasing) that the author explicitly leaves to maintainers, and a later coderabbitai inline comment on the lint file has no visible resolution.
