Fixes #30713

What was wrong

In Prisma 6, DataProxyEngine wrapped every Accelerate request in withRetry: a fetch rejection (RequestError, P5010) or a 5xx response other than 504 (ServerError) was retried up to 3 times with exponential backoff, and each retry was reported as a warn log event.

When Accelerate support moved to the client engine (#27594) and DataProxyEngine was removed (#28345), that logic was not carried over. RemoteExecutor#request makes one fetch call, so a dropped keep-alive connection (TypeError: fetch failed / UND_ERR_SOCKET: other side closed) or a transient 503 from the edge now reaches the application on the first failure. That is the jump in errors the issue reports after upgrading from 6 to 7.

Fix

RemoteExecutor#request now retries with the same policy as Prisma 6:

  • A fetch rejection is retried, and after the last attempt the original error is rethrown, so the error users see when the service really is down does not change.
  • A 5xx response other than 504 is retried. After the last attempt, the last response becomes the usual PrismaClientKnownRequestError, built by the existing #throwErrorFromResponse.
  • Up to 3 retries (4 attempts in total). The backoff schedule is the same as before: about 50ms, 100ms, 200ms, each with ±50% jitter. The helper is ported to engines/client/utils/backoff.ts.
  • Each retry emits Attempt n/3 failed for <METHOD> <path>: <reason> and Retrying after <n>ms as warn events, like DataProxyEngine did.

Not retried:

  • 504, where the query may still be running.
  • Every 4xx. This includes what the Query Plan Executor sends for errors caused by the query itself: 400 for user-facing errors such as P2002, 409 for transaction manager errors, 422 for resource limits.

Retries apply to all endpoints (/query, /transaction/*, /connection-info), and the request is rebuilt each time, so cookies and the machine hint from a failed response are used on the next attempt. The issue raises the question of retrying a write whose request may already have reached the server. This keeps the Prisma 6 behaviour, which retried those too. If you'd rather not retry some requests, for example transaction commits or anything after a 500, I'm happy to narrow it.

Tests

New packages/client/src/runtime/core/engines/client/RemoteExecutor.test.ts, using a mocked fetch:

  • network rejection, then success: retried, and the warn messages are emitted
  • the retried request has the same URL, method and body
  • 500, 502 and 503 are retried
  • retries also happen through the global fetch, which getConnectionInfo uses
  • after 4 network failures the original error is rethrown
  • after 4 5xx responses the last one becomes a PrismaClientKnownRequestError (P6000)
  • 400, 409, 422 and 504 are not retried

On v7 without the fix, 8 of the 12 tests fail. All 12 pass with the fix.

pnpm --filter @prisma/client exec jest src/runtime # 30 suites, 355 tests passed
eslint + prettier --check on the changed files # clean
tsc --noEmit -p packages/client # no new errors (pre-existing errors in tests/functional fixtures only)

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Requests now automatically retry transient network failures and selected server errors, with a short, increasing delay between attempts.
    • Retries preserve the original request, including its method and body. Requests canceled by the caller or timed out are not retried.
    • If retries are exhausted, network failures are reported and the final server response follows the existing error handling.
    • Client errors and 504 Gateway Timeout responses are not retried.

Prisma 6's DataProxyEngine retried network failures and 5xx responses
(except 504) up to three times with exponential backoff. That logic was
not carried over when Accelerate moved to the client engine's
RemoteExecutor, so a dropped connection or a 503 from the edge now
reaches the application on the first failure.

Retry the same failures again, with the same schedule and the same warn
log messages as before.

📝 Walkthrough

RemoteExecutor now retries network failures and HTTP statuses of 500 or higher except 504, with up to three retries. Retries use exponential backoff with jitter and log the failure and delay. Tests cover recovery, exhausted retries, request preservation, and responses that do not trigger retries.

Changes: RemoteExecutor retries

Layer / File(s) Summary
Retry policy and backoff

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to 92d22

This restores the retry behavior that existed before Prisma 7 for transient Accelerate failures. Retried writes or transaction starts could be duplicated if the server had already processed the first attempt. The behavior matches Prisma 6, but maintainers should confirm they accept it before merging.

Security architecture risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to 92d22

Retries can repeat a database change after its original response is lost. Authentication and retry limits remain intact, but safe replay of writes and transaction creation is not demonstrated.

Retained concerns

  • Medium · reliability · inferred: Automatic replay includes state-changing queries and transaction creation without a demonstrated idempotency contract. If an operation executes before its response is lost or replaced by an eligible 5xx, another attempt may duplicate the write or create an additional transaction whose identifier the client never receives. This weakens failure containment and cleanup compared with the base's single attempt. Production service deduplication could mitigate this concern, but that evidence is missing.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The replay risk concerns data and transactions reachable through the application's configured remote datasource credential. One eligible call can produce up to four submissions. The inspected change does not establish additional credential authority or cross-tenant reachability; production authorization scope remains outside the available evidence.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — The material failure path is an authorized state-changing request executing remotely, followed by response loss or an eligible server error, then automatic resubmission. Duplicate effects depend on the operation and service replay semantics. An unauthenticated attacker path or verified authorization bypass is not established by this evidence.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Attempts retain the configured base URL and bearer authentication. Transaction identifiers remain in transaction endpoint paths. The PR changes repetition across the existing client-service boundary rather than adding a new destination or authentication mechanism.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Four-attempt limits, backoff, and exclusion of explicit aborts, timeouts, 504, and 4xx responses contain replay. These controls do not distinguish a transport failure before execution from one after a remote state change.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Establish an explicit replay contract for writes and transaction lifecycle requests. Where the service cannot demonstrate safe replay, restrict retries to proven-safe operations or introduce stable operation identities with server-side deduplication. Validate accepted-operation response loss, repeated transaction start, and cleanup through stateful fault-injection cases.

Do not retry intentional fetch cancellations.

If customFetch rejects with an AbortError, this catch block waits and calls it three more times. Cancellation is not a transient network failure. Rethrow cancellation errors before scheduling a retry, and cover that case in the tests.

…odies

A fetch that rejects with an AbortError or TimeoutError was cancelled
on purpose (or hit a caller-set deadline), so it is rethrown right away
instead of being retried.

The warning logged before a retry now only carries the HTTP status and
status text. The response body comes from the server or a proxy in
front of it and should not end up in the logs. If the last attempt
fails as well, its body is still reported through the usual
PrismaClientKnownRequestError, as before.

Thanks for the review.

  • Cancelled requests (92d2249): if fetch rejects with an AbortError or a TimeoutError, the error is now rethrown right away instead of being retried. There are tests for both.

  • Response bodies in retry warnings (92d2249): the warning now carries only the status and status text, for example Attempt 1/3 failed for POST /query: HTTP 503 Service Unavailable. If the last attempt fails too, its body still goes into the PrismaClientKnownRequestError through #throwErrorFromResponse, as before. A new test checks that the body doesn't appear in the warnings.

  • Replaying writes and transaction calls: I haven't changed this yet, because it's a choice about retry semantics rather than a bug in the patch. Every request goes through this path: /query, /transaction/start, /transaction/:id/{query,commit,rollback} and /connection-info. Prisma 6 did the same, since DataProxyEngine.withRetry wrapped both requestInternal and transaction() for start, commit and rollback. So the PR brings back the old behaviour rather than adding a new risk. The concern still holds, though. After a network error or a 5xx, we can't tell whether the server already handled the request, and the client sends no idempotency key that would let the server drop a duplicate. Commit and rollback are the low-risk cases: replaying either one on a transaction that is already closed returns a 4xx error, so nothing runs twice. The real risks are a write sent twice, on /query or inside a transaction, and a repeated /transaction/start that leaves a stray transaction open until it times out.

I see two options: (a) keep Prisma 6 parity, which is what the PR does now, or (b) retry only reads, commit and rollback, and let writes and /transaction/start fail on the first error. With (b), some of the other side closed errors from Prisma 7: Accelerate requests are no longer retried on transient failures (regression from DataProxyEngine withRetry) #30713 would still reach the application on writes. I'm happy to implement (b) if the maintainers prefer it.

🧹 Nitpick | 🔵 Trivial

Decide whether to replay non-idempotent requests after a network error.

#request now retries every fetch rejection, including POST /transaction/start and POST /query with write operations. After a network error, the client cannot know whether the server processed the request. The client sends no idempotency key. A retry can duplicate a write. A retry can also start a second transaction that stays open until timeout.

The PR states that this matches Prisma 6 behavior, so this is a maintainer decision. Confirm the decision is intended. Consider limiting retries of writes and /transaction/start to failures where the request is known not to have reached the server.

Agreed that this is the maintainers' call. I wrote up the trade-off in this comment: the PR currently keeps Prisma 6 behaviour (a), and I can switch to retrying only reads, commit and rollback (b) if that is preferred. I'll wait for a maintainer to decide before changing it.

@SahinurDEV Thanks for clarifying. The trade-off is documented. No change is needed before maintainers choose the retry policy. This finding remains open pending that decision.
