fix(mongo-orm): typed where filters match each field's shape, and null on a list means null or missing (TML-3618) - #30769
Conversation
The object form of Mongo `where` typed every scalar list field as its element, so a whole list value and `null` on a nullable list were type errors even though MongoDB already matches them. A scalar list field now also takes `readonly Element[]` (items may be null when the list's items are nullable) and `null` when the list itself is nullable. Adds a fixture with String[], String?[], String[]? and String?[]? fields and an integration test that runs a whole-list, single-element and null filter on each and checks the matching documents. MongoDB's `{ field: null }` also matches an array that holds a null item,
so `where({ tags: null })` on a `String?[]?` field returned lists such as
`['c', null]`. The object form of `where` now sends
`{ field: { $not: { $type: 'array' } } }` for null on a scalar list.
A nullable scalar field that is not a list (`String?`) now accepts
`null` in the object form of `where`, matching null or missing; a field
that is not nullable still rejects it.

A null filter on any list field, scalar or value object, now compiles to
`{ field: { $not: { $type: 'array' } } }`, so it no longer matches a list
that holds a null item.

`where({ optionalStrings: 'a' }).upsert(...)` sent `{ optionalStrings: 'a' }`,
which MongoDB copies into the inserted document as a string, so the
collection validator refused the insert. One element on a list field now
compiles to `{ field: { $elemMatch: { $eq: element } } }`, for scalar and
value-object lists alike; reads match the same lists, and an upsert no
longer copies the element. A whole list stays an equality.
Also documents what each list value matches on `where()`, drops a unit
test for a field the typed API cannot name, writes non-list fields in the
type-test contract without `many` as emitted contracts do, and renames the
integration test to cover what it tests.

…neric The Mongo emitter now types fields through the shared field type generic, so the committed contract.d.ts for the list-filters fixture was stale. On MongoDB, the ORM's typed
wherenow accepts every filter that makes sense for a field's shape, and each filter matches what its type says. The problem
The object form of
wheregave every field the type of a single value of its codec:stringfortags. So filtering bynull, by an empty list, or by a whole list was a type error, even though the ORM sent those filters to MongoDB correctly. The only way around it was a rawMongoFieldFilter, whose field name TypeScript does not check. The same applied to a nullable field that is not a list:where({ nickname: null })onnickname String?was a type error. The types
Each scalar field now accepts the values that are meaningful for its shape. A
?after the brackets makes the list itself nullable; a?before them makes its items nullable.whereacceptsStringstringString?string | nullString[]string | readonly string[]String?[]string | readonly (string | null)[]String[]?string | readonly string[] | nullString?[]?string | readonly (string | null)[] | nullnullis accepted only when the field itself is nullable. Value-object list fields keep the type they had, unknown. Why the types alone were not enough
Allowing
nullin the type would have exposed a MongoDB rule:{ tags: null }also matches an array that holds a null item. On aString?[]?field, where({ tags: null })would have returned the document{ tags: ['c', null] }, whose list is not null. So anullfilter on any list field, scalar or value object, now sends{ tags: { $not: { $type: 'array' } } }. A list field holds an array, null, or nothing, so "not an array" is exactly "null or missing". On a field that is not a list,{ nickname: null }already means that and is sent unchanged. The single-element filter
where({ tags: 'a' })still finds lists that contain'a', but it now sends{ tags: { $elemMatch: { $eq: 'a' } } }instead of{ tags: 'a' }. Reads match the same documents. The change fixesupsert: when nothing matches, MongoDB builds the inserted document from the filter's plain equality conditions, sowhere({ tags: 'a' }).upsert(...)used to inserttags: 'a', a string where a list belongs, and the collection validator refused the document.$elemMatchis not copied into the inserted document. A whole-list filter such as['a']stays plain equality. What changes for existing code
where({ tags: null }), anupsertthat inserts now leavestagsout unlesscreatesets it, where it used to storenull. MongoDB does not copy a$notcondition into the inserted document. The ORM reads a missing field asnull, so reads see the same value.where({ entries: null })on a value-object list no longer returns documents whose list holds a null item. Code can write this filter today, because the field's type isunknown, so its results change without a type error. No upgrade instructions are needed: the types only widen, and
check:upgrade-coveragereports nothing.Tests
upsertafter a single-element filter stores the documentcreatedescribes. That case fails without the fix.test/mongointegration directory (808 tests) and the Mongo extension package pass.Alternatives considered
where({ tags: null })on a list whose items may be null would then have been a typed filter that also returns lists holding a null item.nullon lists whose items may be null. That avoids the wrong match by forbidding a meaningful filter. The SQL ORM acceptsnullon every nullable list.Refs: TML-3618
