At a glance

await db.orm.public.User.where({ id: 1 }).update({ name: 'Alicia' }, (m) =>
  m.annotate(invalidateAnnotation({ keys: ['user-1'] })),
);
// the cache removes 'user-1' once the update has committed

A write can now carry its own cache invalidation. The cache middleware removes the named entries once the write's effects are final: after the commit, never before it, and never after a rollback. Closes TML-3400. This is slice 4, the last slice, of the project Runtime middleware sees a tree of activities.

Why invalidating has to wait for the commit

Until now an application called cache.invalidate({ keys }) itself, after the write had returned. Invalidating any earlier is wrong:

  1. A transaction updates user 1, and the cache entry is removed.
  2. Before the commit, another request reads user 1, misses, reads the old committed row and stores it.
  3. The transaction commits. The cache serves the old row until the entry expires.

Most ORM writes open a transaction of their own, so this is the normal path, not an edge case.

The decision: invalidate from activityFinalized

ADR 271 gives every activity an activityFinalized event. It fires once the activity's effects are final, with the outcome committed, rolled-back or unknown. The cache middleware now implements it:

  • What triggers it. Any activity carrying invalidateAnnotation: an ORM write's orm-call activity, an annotated builder statement, or any client activity. The cache never checks the activity's kind or the transaction.
  • Which outcomes. rolled-back does nothing. committed and unknown both invalidate. An unknown write may have committed, and an unneeded invalidation costs one cache miss.
  • When. Outside a transaction, right after the write ends. Inside db.transaction(fn), when the transaction ends. Several annotated writes in one transaction each invalidate after the commit.
  • What it calls. The same code path as cache.invalidate, so the version check that stops overlapping reads from storing old rows still applies.
  • Errors. A store error is thrown from the hook. The runtime logs it and swallows it, because the write has already happened.

ORM annotations live on the orm-call activity, so writes with relation callbacks and creates on multi-table-inheritance models invalidate like any other write.

The annotation

export interface InvalidationTarget<TMeta = unknown> {
  readonly keys?: readonly string[];
  readonly meta?: TMeta;
}
// invalidateAnnotation<TMeta>({ keys, meta }), applicable to writes only

It takes the same InvalidationTarget type as cache.invalidate. A read refuses it at compile time and at run time with RUNTIME.ANNOTATION_INAPPLICABLE.

Things to know

  • Errors are only logged. An invalidation that fails, for example meta on the default store, which cannot act on meta, removes nothing and keys stay cached. Pass log to the client to see these errors.
  • A slow store slows the write. The write's promise, and db.transaction(fn), wait for store.unset. A custom store should time out its own unset.
  • A write that never finalizes never invalidates. This happens with a dropped row iterator or a process that stops after the commit. The entry lives until it expires.
  • Memory inside transactions. Any middleware with activityFinalized makes a transaction keep its finished statements until it ends, and the cache now has one. Manual QA measured about 2.9 KB per statement: 55 MB for a transaction of 20,000 inserts, against 1 MB with no middleware. All of it is released at the commit. The README advises splitting large batch imports. Releasing a finished statement's parameters early is recorded in projects/activity-tree/deferred.md.

Testing

  • Unit tests: each outcome, no annotation, empty targets, other activity kinds and store errors.
  • Type tests: all ten SQL ORM write terminals and builder writes accept the annotation; reads refuse it; TMeta checks meta.
  • Postgres integration tests:
    • an annotated update() invalidates after its own transaction commits;
    • inside db.transaction(fn), a read before the commit is still a hit and a read after misses;
    • a rolled-back transaction leaves the entry in place;
    • nested creates, multi-table-inheritance creates, builder writes, failing writes, and two writes in one transaction;
    • meta on the default store.
  • Manual QA: recorded in projects/activity-tree/manual-qa-reports/2026-10-19-qa-slice-4.md.

Alternatives considered

  • Invalidate when the write ends. Rejected: inside a transaction that is before the commit, which lets a concurrent read store the old row.
  • Have the cache inspect transactions itself. Rejected: the runtime already decides when effects are final, so the cache would duplicate that logic.
  • A runtime switch to skip finalization tracking for apps that never annotate a write. Rejected: it would add a cache-specific setting to the runtime.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Cache entries can now be invalidated automatically by annotating supported writes. Invalidation waits until the write or enclosing transaction is finalized, skips rolled-back writes, and handles committed or uncertain outcomes.
    • Cache invalidation can target explicit keys or store-specific metadata. Store errors are logged without changing the write outcome.
  • Documentation
    • Updated cache middleware guidance and examples to cover write-triggered invalidation, transaction behavior, supported operations, and store limitations.

… cache entries once its effects are final

The cache middleware implements activityFinalized. For any activity that carries invalidateAnnotation({ keys, meta }), it makes the same call as cache.invalidate unless the outcome is rolled-back. Outside a transaction that is right after the write; inside db.transaction(fn), when the transaction ends. The annotation applies to writes only.

… a write's invalidation fails, waits or never runs

Addresses the drive review: InvalidateAnnotationOptions is the argument of invalidate too; the READMEs, ADR 266 and the runtime subsystem doc cover meta on the default store, waiting on store.unset, writes that never finalize and the memory a transaction holds; new tests cover several annotated writes in one transaction, a builder write in a transaction, meta on the default store and the run-time refusal through ORM first().

…ors say what to do, and the demo invalidates on a write

Manual QA of slice 4, with fixes: the cache READMEs show passing log and give the measured memory cost; RUNTIME.ANNOTATION_INAPPLICABLE carries a fix naming the kinds the annotation applies to; the default store says that nothing was removed, keys included, and what to use instead; the demo update ormClientUpdateUserEmailInvalidatingCache removes the cached user lookup.

📝 Walkthrough

The cache middleware adds write-attached invalidation through invalidateAnnotation. It runs at activity finalization, skips rolled-back outcomes, and handles committed or unknown outcomes. Tests, examples, and documentation cover transaction timing, metadata, store errors, and annotation applicability.

Merge Risk: ⚪ Minimal · up to 990a4

This change adds write-attached cache invalidation that runs after commit, skips rollback, and runs when the outcome is unknown. No concrete merge-blocking problem was found in the reviewed change.

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to 990a4

Invalidation uses the existing cache store and waits for transaction settlement. No new authorization bypass was identified. Store failures or interruption can still leave stale entries, so this remains a best-effort freshness mechanism rather than a guaranteed security-revocation mechanism.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • observed — Invalidation breadth is determined by application-supplied keys and store-interpreted metadata, not by the identity of the row being written. The new trigger retains the existing store-scoped invalidation capability; it does not introduce an independent tenant-authorization check.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The normal attachment boundary enforces write-only applicability. The cache hook itself trusts the activity's annotation and does not independently check activity kind, consistent with the documented framework integration rather than an additional authorization boundary.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Successful invalidation reuses the existing versioned-store defense against stale concurrent read population. Correctness depends on atomic version comparison and retention long enough to cover overlapping reads; the default store documents a finite-retention limitation for unusually long reads.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — For authorization- or revocation-sensitive consumers, explicitly choose a freshness policy that does not depend solely on best-effort invalidation. Options include bypassing cache reads that must be current, enforcing bounded lifetimes, and monitoring finalization failures. This is integration guidance, not evidence of a verified vulnerability.

…ation on the wrong kind of operation says what to do in its message

Addresses drive review round 2: runtimeError has no fix option again, as ADR 239 retires fix; RUNTIME.ANNOTATION_INAPPLICABLE says in plain words to move the annotation to an operation of a kind it applies to; the error reference entry is neutral; the demo says an explicit key does not change with the schema and how to pass log; the integration test asserts the committed and unknown outcomes; the deferred item on facade logs is updated.
