Fixes #1147

Cause. The chart limits were per factor (255 series, 100,000 points, 16 trendlines per series) and nothing bounded their product. A column chart also drew one rectangle per series and category however narrow, resolve evaluated a whole range before cutting it to 100,000 points, and render deep-copied the chart data on every call.

What changed (crates/chart)

  • A point budget per chart: series x points <= 2,000,000. Over it, every series and the category list keep their first 2,000,000 / series points (25 series keep 80,000 each); no series is dropped, so the legend and colours stay. Applied in resolve (so ranges are also read only that far) and in render (for data that did not come from resolve). There is no "truncated" flag on ChartData: adding a field would break every struct literal elsewhere; the behaviour is documented on MAX_TOTAL_POINTS.
  • Trendlines are limited per chart (16, in series order) instead of per series.
  • Columns and bars narrower than 0.25 px (and without data labels) are merged per pixel column into one rectangle covering the same extent. Wider bars take the old path unchanged.
  • eval_list_in cuts a plain reference (Sheet!A1:A1000000, A:A) after the rows that can still hold the first points before calc evaluates it, but never below 16,385 cells: calc reads references up to 16,384 cells at full size and trims larger ones to the used range, so a shorter clip would add trailing blanks. Anything that is not a plain reference is evaluated as before.
  • moving_average is linear: block head/tail sums (they only add, so a huge value passing through cannot leave rounding residue the way a running add/subtract sum does).
  • fit_trendline uses a stack array instead of a Vec per data point.
  • render borrows the data when it is already clean and within budget (Cow); the old copying sanitize is used only otherwise.

Tests (9 new in gridcraft-chart)

  • trend::tests::linear_moving_average_matches_the_window_sums: against the old window-by-window sums over random, offset, 1e300-spike, +-1e15 and NaN data, periods 0..400.
  • trend::tests::fit_without_a_vec_per_point_is_bit_identical: assert_eq! of the whole fit against a copy of the old function, all kinds, with and without intercept.
  • tests::budget::the_point_budget_keeps_every_series_with_fewer_points, trendlines_are_limited_per_chart, resolve_keeps_every_series_within_the_point_budget, hairline_columns_are_merged_and_wide_ones_are_not (wide bars still one rectangle each; envelope of merged bars kept; horizontal bars), clean_data_is_rendered_without_a_copy (borrowed for clean data, equal to sanitize for dirty data).
  • resolve::tests::a_long_reference_is_clipped_before_it_is_evaluated, clipping_does_not_change_the_points: the clipped range is at most 100,000 rows of a 1,000,000-row range, and the values equal the unclipped read for several shapes and limits.
  • I reverted the budget, the culling and the 16,385 lower bound together (not one by one) to check the tests fail without them: 5 of the new tests failed; all restored.

Commands run: cargo fmt -p gridcraft-chart -- --check, cargo clippy -p gridcraft-chart --all-targets -- -D warnings, cargo test -p gridcraft-chart (43 passed), cargo test -p gridcraft-engine --lib chart (10 passed), cargo check -p gridcraft-chart --target wasm32-unknown-unknown, cargo xtask layers.

Not done

  • One calc host shared by the evaluate calls of a resolve (each call still builds its own and recomputes the used range): needs a calc API change.
  • The scatter point lists (24 bytes per point) are unchanged; the budget bounds them.
  • Not run: ui-egui tests, full cargo xtask ci (CI covers them).
  • No timing claims: the tests count points and primitives, not time.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Performance

    • Rendering avoids unnecessary copies when chart data is already clean.
    • Dense, narrow bars and columns are combined by pixel column when data labels are off; labeled bars remain individually visible.
    • Moving averages and trendlines are calculated more efficiently, and chart data is processed more efficiently.
  • Reliability

    • Charts are limited to 2,000,000 plotted points and 16 trendlines across the chart. Oversized series are trimmed while retaining their earliest points.

A chart keeps at most 2,000,000 series x points (every series and the
categories keep their first points), 16 trendlines per chart; columns and
bars narrower than 0.25 px are merged per pixel column; series references
are cut after the rows that can matter before calc evaluates them; the

Merged main (conflicts in ROADMAP.md and the chart resolver). Main's multi-level category axes and its new rule for how calc reads long references needed adjusting: long references are now trimmed to the used range before being clipped, and the clip test uses a taller sheet. Ran cargo fmt --check, cargo check --workspace --all-targets and cargo xtask ci (fmt, clippy, test, assets, layers, wasm, parity, keytips): all green.

Walkthrough

Chart resolution limits points and trendlines and clips eligible references before evaluation. Rendering borrows clean data and merges narrow unlabeled bars by pixel column. Trendline fitting and moving averages use updated calculations. Tests cover limits, rendering behavior, and calculation results.

Changes: Chart bounds and calculations

Layer / File(s) Summary
Resolve chart data within budgets
crates/chart/src/resolve.rs, crates/chart/src/tests.rs, crates/chart/src/tests/budget.rs, ROADMAP.md
Resolution applies a two-million-point chart budget and a 16-trendline chart-wide cap. Eligible references are clipped before evaluation, and unions use the remaining point allowance. Tests cover allocation, clipping, and workbook resolution.
Bound chart rendering
crates/chart/src/render.rs, crates/chart/src/render/cartesian.rs, crates/chart/src/tests/budget.rs
Rendering borrows clean data and sanitizes data that needs cleanup or exceeds limits. Narrow unlabeled bars are merged by pixel column. Tests check merged rectangles and sanitation behavior.
Update trend calculations
crates/chart/src/trend.rs
Trendline fitting replaces per-point vector allocation with a fixed-size array. Moving averages use block prefix and suffix sums. Tests compare the calculations against reference implementations.

Suggested reviewers: echelon, aiongg

Merge Risk: Low · up to 5144e

The chart work and memory bounds look sound. Three narrow edge cases remain: extreme-magnitude moving averages can come out infinite, charts with more than three category levels skip the level cap on the clean-data path, and dense stacked hairline bars can show a filled gap. Fixing them before or shortly after merge keeps behavior consistent.

Security architecture risk: Moderate · up to 5144e

The changes generally reduce chart-processing work, but the new no-copy rendering path bypasses an existing category-level limit. Applications rendering directly supplied chart data could experience excessive memory and CPU consumption. The inspected workbook-backed callers retain upstream limits, which narrows the demonstrated exposure.

Retained concerns

  • Medium · security · inferred: The new borrowed-data branch bypasses the previous three-level category-axis cap. Otherwise clean caller-constructed ChartData can contain arbitrarily many category_levels, each expanded across up to 20,000 category slots during Cartesian rendering. This creates memory and CPU amplification for consumers accepting untrusted ChartData directly. Known workbook-backed callers retain upstream caps, so remote exploitability is not established.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The demonstrated impact is resource exhaustion within a process rendering directly supplied ChartData. The inspected workbook-backed callers preserve the upstream category-level cap; broader service, tenant, or environment exposure is not established.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — A caller able to supply ChartData can combine in-budget categories and a clean series with many empty category-level vectors. The fast path accepts this input unchanged, after which Cartesian rendering pads every empty level to the category-slot count. This amplifies a compact level list into a much larger allocation; the base limited the same list to three levels.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The rendering API independently validates dimensions and several data budgets rather than requiring resolved input. Those controls remain, but category-level validation is absent from the new borrowed-data decision.

Full details: Title check

Explanation

The title names the main change: chart work and memory are bounded by series x points, and ranges are clipped before evaluation. The changeset implements a chart-wide 2,000,000-point budget, a 16-trendline cap, hairline bar merging, moving-average and trend-fit optimizations, borrowed rendering of clean data, and reference clipping before evaluation. The title also includes a PR-style reference number, (#1147), which differs from the PR objectives text (PR #1155). The title is 100 characters and 16 words, which is at the upper end of a concise title but still readable.

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

The PR implements the coding requirements in [#1147]. resolve and render apply a 2,000,000-point chart budget and retain every series. Trendlines are limited to 16 per chart. Plain references are clipped before evaluation. Narrow columns and bars are merged without changing the wider-bar path. moving_average uses linear block sums, fit_trendline uses a fixed array, and clean data uses a borrow path. The reported tests cover these behaviors. Shared calc-host reuse remains excluded by [#1147].

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The changes stay within [#1147]. They modify chart resolution, rendering, trend calculations, reference clipping, and related tests. The ROADMAP entry documents the same chart work. No unrelated functional change is identified.

needs_sanitizing ignores category_levels, so render can skip the level cap that sanitize enforces.

The doc comment says this function reports whether sanitize and apply_budget would change d. sanitize (Lines 198) keeps at most 3 category_levels and truncates each to MAX_POINTS. needs_sanitizing never inspects category_levels.

ChartData derives Deserialize and render is a public entry point. Suppose d has clean values and more than 3 outer levels. needs_sanitizing returns false and sanitized returns Cow::Borrowed(d). Before this change, render always called sanitize, which dropped the extra levels.

Two consequences follow:

  • cartesian builds outer (Lines 1085-1086) with one Vec<String> of ncat_slots entries per level, with no cap on the number of levels. Memory grows with the level count.
  • frame subtracts lh * levels from the plot height. Extra levels can shrink the plot until it is not drawn.

The new clean_data_is_rendered_without_a_copy test does not cover this case.

Add the category_levels conditions to the check:

Recompute a window when its block sums overflow.

With period 4 and y-values [0, -1e308, 1e308, 1e308, -1e308], tail[1] overflows to infinity. The window starting at index 1 sums to zero in input order, but this code emits an infinite mean. When the combined sum is non-finite, sum that window directly before emitting its mean. Add this finite-input case to the comparison test.

Preserve disjoint spans when merging stacked bars.

When a later stacked series has positive and negative stack bases, bars from that series can occupy disjoint value-axis spans. If both bars fall into one hairline bucket, BarRun::add merges them into one envelope, and BarRun::draw fills the gap with that series’ color. Keep disjoint spans separate within a bucket, or use an aggregation that does not fill the gap.

This is a narrow visual defect. The first stacked series usually touches at zero, but later stacked series can expose the gap.
