Wildcard matching and replacement crates/engine/src/cmd/edit.rs |
Wildcard replacement tokenizes escaped characters and replaces non-overlapping matches. A trailing * consumes the remaining text. Case handling preserves match positions, and cells without a match are skipped. Tests cover replacement and scanning behavior. |

Replacement can still skip matches for two uncommon patterns. The change is mergeable with owner awareness of those edge cases.
Security architecture risk:
Low · up to 5fb58
-
The changes reuse existing workbook-edit and contributor-publication controls. No introduced security vulnerability was established, but consent verification for the new contributor entry remains unconfirmed.
Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.Security review details
-
Security Blast Radius
- observed — The affected resources are cells within the existing replacement command's sheet or workbook scope and contributor names emitted into static credits. The inspected changes do not add a service, credential, or network destination.
Security Findings and Attack Paths
- inferred — Unauthorized publication of the new contributor's name is not established. The existing verification gate is unchanged, and the available generated contributor data has no matching row. Whether a later refresh accepts the entry with valid consent remains unresolved; the deferred candidate is not a verified vulnerability.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
- observed — Contributor publication continues to trust the externally produced people_entry flag. The new record does not bypass the local flag check, but the verifier implementation and authoritative self-authorship or consent evidence were unavailable, limiting assessment of that upstream control.
Resilience and Maintainability Implications
- observed — Replacement retains the existing failure-containment lifecycle: edits occur on a temporary workbook, protection and array checks precede publication, closure failures discard local changes, successful execution records history, and panic recovery and undo/redo restore workbook snapshots. No new partial-publication path was identified in the changed flow.

Full details: Title check

Explanation
The title names the main change: Find and Replace now replaces the text that a wildcard pattern matches, instead of leaving cells unchanged. The changeset matches this. edit.rs adds left-to-right wildcard matching with
*and?support, and inreplacenon-whole-cell patterns with wildcards now replace the matched text. The linked issue#2108is also cited in the title. The title is a single 11-word sentence and does not include a file list, emoji, or vague terms. The PR number in the title (#2108) refers to the issue; the objectives mention PR#2127, so the number is a minor mismatch and does not affect the title's accuracy.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win
Use matching-compatible lowercase handling for replacement.
If a cell contains "ΟΣ" and what is "*ς" with matchCase=false, matches lowercases the whole text to "ος" and accepts the cell. Here, per-character lowercasing converts Σ to σ, so replace_wildcard finds no match and leaves the cell unchanged. Keep replacement positions tied to original characters, but make its case comparison agree with matches. Rust documents this difference between str::to_lowercase and char::to_lowercase. 🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win
Do not prefilter wildcard replacement with a modified pattern.
If what is "a*~" and the cell contains "abc", wildcard_tokens drops the trailing ~, so replacement would match "a*". The earlier matches call instead appends * to make "*a*~*". The ~ escapes that appended star, so matches rejects the cell before this branch runs. Let replace_wildcard determine whether a non-whole-cell wildcard pattern matches.

Fixes #2108.
Cause
edit.replacedecides whether a cell matches with the wildcard matcher (matches, which reads*,?and~when the pattern holds*or?), then rewrote the cell withstr::replace/replace_ci, which look for the pattern text literally. A cell like10.0.0.1, fe80::1matched,*, was counted inreplaced, and kept its text.Fix
crates/engine/src/cmd/edit.rs: when the pattern holds*or?(the same testmatchesuses), Replace now rewrites each match, left to right and without overlaps. A*takes as few characters as it can, except a trailing*, which takes the rest of the text: the rules @iluebbe measured in Excel 365 in #1455.~escapes work as in Find (wildcardand the new code share the tokenizer). Case-insensitive matching folds one char to one char, ascriteria.rsdoes since f8983e2, so match positions stay those of the cell text. A cell is counted only when a match was replaced. When a start fails after reaching a
*, the scan stops: what follows the star can't be placed from any later start either. Without that, a 32,767-character cell with no match took ~0.4 s (a*boveraaa…); with it, under 1 ms (release build, M1 Pro).Verified
