CSV export: comma and semicolon types named after what the file holds - #2466
CSV export: comma and semicolon types named after what the file holds
File › Export and Save As now offer two CSV types. Each name says what the file contains:
Type
Delimiter
Numbers
Encoding
CSV UTF-8 (Comma delimited)
,
1234.5 (as formatted, e.g. 1,234.50)
UTF-8 with BOM
CSV UTF-8 (Semicolon delimited) — new
;
decimal comma, period-grouped (1.234,50)
UTF-8 with BOM
Dates and times are left as shown.15.03.2026 stays 15.03.2026; only number cells swap their marks.
Both types start with a UTF-8 byte order mark. Without it, Excel on Windows reads the file as ANSI and accented letters come out garbled (città ).
The comma type now writes commas even for a workbook opened from a ; file. File › Save of an opened CSV still keeps its separator, as before.
Commands.file.exportCsv and file.saveBytes take:
delimiter: "," or ";";
decimal: "." or ",";
bom: true or false.
Without these parameters the output is byte-for-byte unchanged, so the CLI, scripts and existing tests behave as before.
Why the names differ from Excel's
Excel's "Comma delimited" really means the Windows list separator, and that is , only where the decimal mark is .. Anyone using an English Excel never sees this. I observed it in Excel 365 with the Italian interface and it-IT region on 2026-10-24, using synthetic sheets and temporary files that were then deleted:
«CSV UTF-8 (delimitato da virgole)» ("comma delimited") writes semicolons, decimal commas (1,5), UTF-8 with BOM and CRLF.
«CSV (delimitato dal separatore di elenco)» ("list separator") writes the same semicolons and decimal commas in ANSI (Windows-1252).
So in Italian, and likewise in German, French and most European regions, Excel's two CSV types differ only by encoding, and the "comma" one contains no commas. As an Italian user I always found a "comma-delimited" file full of semicolons incoherent. GridCraft aims to be compatible with Excel's files, not with its inconsistencies, so:
the comma CSV holds commas;
the semicolon CSV, which is what Excel opens on a double-click in those regions, is its own explicit type;
there is no ANSI variant: UTF-8 everywhere.
This is documented for maintainers who use Excel in English, under «CSV names: what the file holds» in docs/file-format-parity.md.
The Italian labels are «CSV UTF-8 (delimitato da punto e virgola) (*.csv)» and «CSV (delimitato da punto e virgola)». The existing «delimitato da virgole» labels are fixed in #2460, which said "separatore di elenco" before.
Changes
crates/engine/src/io.rs:
CsvStyle (delimiter, decimal comma, BOM) and csv_bytes;
the decimal comma applies to number cells whose format is not a date or time.
crates/engine/src/cmd/file.rs: the delimiter / decimal / bom parameters with validation, documented in the command params.
crates/ui-egui/src/backstage.rs:
the new type in Save As and File › Export;
.csv as the extension for both types;
the parameters passed on desktop (file.exportCsv) and web (file.saveBytes).
crates/ui-egui/src/i18n/it.rs: Italian for the new strings.
docs/file-format-parity.md: the CSV rows, the «CSV names» section and the revision history.
a formatted number (1,234.50 ↔ 1.234,50), a dotted date that stays a date, and text containing ;, which is quoted;
reading the file back;
invalid parameters, which are refused.
export_csv_writes_the_style_asked_for: file.exportCsv to a file.
file_menu: File › Export › CSV (Semicolon delimited) downloads a .csv, and both menu CSVs start with the BOM.
cargo xtask ci: all 10 steps pass.
Related: #1446 (CSV import), #361 / #1524 (regional formats: once a region setting exists, the semicolon type could be suggested first where the decimal mark is a comma).
Save As now offers comma-delimited and semicolon-delimited CSV exports. Semicolon-delimited files use decimal commas; both CSV export types include a UTF-8 BOM.
CSV export options let you set the delimiter, decimal separator, and BOM. If omitted, existing defaults and workbook delimiter behavior are preserved.
Exported CSV files use the .csv extension and the selected delimiter.
Bug Fixes
Invalid CSV export options now return an error.
Documentation
Updated CSV format guidance to describe export options, defaults, and delimiter behavior.
File › Export and Save As offer CSV UTF-8 (Comma delimited) and the new
CSV UTF-8 (Semicolon delimited). The semicolon one writes decimal commas
(1.234,5; dates and times stay as shown); both start with a UTF-8 byte
order mark so Excel reads accented letters. The comma one writes commas
even for a workbook opened from a ; file.
file.exportCsv and file.saveBytes take delimiter (, or ;), decimal (. or ,)
and bom; without them the output is unchanged.
The names differ from Excel's on purpose: with the Italian interface and
region, Excel's «CSV UTF-8 (delimitato da virgole)» writes semicolons and
decimal commas (observed in Excel 365, 2026-10-24), and «CSV (delimitato
dal separatore di elenco)» writes the same in ANSI. docs/file-format-parity.md
explains this under «CSV names: what the file holds».

Summary
CSV style serialization and command options crates/engine/src/io.rs, crates/engine/src/cmd/file.rs, crates/engine/src/tests.rs
CSV serialization accepts delimiter, decimal-comma, and BOM settings. File commands validate options and apply styled serialization to CSV output. Tests cover defaults, explicit styles, invalid values, and non-CSV output.
Save As CSV options and documentation crates/ui-egui/src/backstage.rs, crates/ui-egui/src/i18n/it.rs, crates/ui-egui/tests/it/file_menu.rs, docs/file-format-parity.md
Save As offers comma- and semicolon-delimited CSV and passes the matching style options through export commands. Both formats use the .csv extension. Italian translations, UI tests, and format documentation describe the options.
Some semicolon CSV exports can alter literal punctuation in custom numeric formats; this narrow correctness issue should be fixed or consciously accepted.
Security architecture risk: Low · up to e0494
The new export choices preserve backward-compatible defaults and existing file-access controls. No introduced security issue was established. Remaining uncertainty concerns runtime failure behavior and the completeness of security coverage.
Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
inferred — The demonstrated exposure remains the selected sheet's exported data and the existing caller-selected file or browser-download destination. The new options control serialization, not destination authority or access to additional workbook state.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
observed — Caller-controlled styling is validated before serialization. Cell text containing the selected delimiter, quotes, or line breaks is quoted, with embedded quotes doubled. These controls preserve CSV field boundaries; they do not establish safety of arbitrary downstream spreadsheet interpretation.
Resilience and Maintainability Implications
observed — Validation and serialization errors occur before filesystem writing. Successful serialization uses the unchanged exclusive temporary-file and rename sequence, including existing failure cleanup and destination-permission handling. The PR adds no separate recovery mechanism or broader crash/concurrency guarantee.

The comma choices now write commas regardless of the regional list separator. These labels still say “delimitato dal separatore di elenco,” so an Italian user can select the wrong export type. Change both labels to “delimitato da virgole.”

Make the CSV style test assert the delimiter and decimal separator.
The two CSV checks in file_menu pass when the UI forwards the wrong delimiter or decimal value. The comma export checks only the .csv suffix, the BOM, and that the output contains 123. The semicolon export checks only the .csv suffix and the BOM. Swapping the forwarded delimiter and decimal values leaves all of these checks true. No other ui-egui test checks the forwarded values.
The single-cell fixture (Value::Number(123.0) at A1) cannot show a separator. Add a fixture with at least two columns and a fractional number. Then assert the separator and decimal form for each choice.

Emit the requested BOM for empty exports.
When bom=true is used with an empty workbook, serialization produces an empty body. The !body.is_empty() condition then suppresses the BOM and returns zero bytes. This violates the documented contract that explicit CSV styles use a BOM.

Avoid copying the full CSV body to add the BOM.
When bom is true, this path retains body while allocating and copying a second buffer. A 512 MiB export can therefore use about 1 GiB during BOM insertion. file.saveBytes then allocates a separate base64 string, which can further increase peak memory on constrained clients. decimal_comma swaps every . and , in the rendered text. A numeric cell with the reachable custom format 0.00"." displays 12.34. but can export as 12,34,. This changes the literal period and violates the CSV contract to write all displayed characters.

Agreed that the swap belongs in number-format rendering, and the case is real: a format whose quoted literal holds a . or , (0.00".") gets the literal swapped too. Every built-in and common format (0.00, #,##0.00, General, percent, currency) has no such literal and exports correctly.
#2263 (open) adds that rendering to numfmt: Locale { decimal, group } and format_value_in, which swaps only a format's . and , and leaves quoted literals untouched. Writing a second, conflicting version here would duplicate it. Once #2263 lands, the semicolon CSV will call format_value_in with a decimal-comma locale instead of swapping characters. I'll do that in a follow-up and keep this PR independent of #2263.

@carminezac Understood. Reusing the locale-aware renderer from #2263 avoids duplicate implementations. Deferring that integration keeps this PR independent.
The quoted-literal defect remains valid until the follow-up lands, so this finding remains open. Would you like me to create a follow-up issue for the CSV integration and a regression test for 0.00"."?

@coderabbitai Yes, please open the follow-up issue: switch the semicolon CSV export to #2263's format_value_in with a decimal-comma locale once #2263 lands, with a regression test showing 0.00"." exports 12,34.. Assign it to me (@carminezac).

body=$(cat <<'EOF'## SummaryAfter #2263 lands, switch semicolon CSV export to its locale-aware number-format renderer. Use `format_value_in` with `Locale { decimal, group }` configured for decimal commas and period grouping.Requested by @carminezac.## RationaleThe current exporter swaps every `.` and `,` in the final rendered text. This also changes punctuation in quoted custom-format literals. For example, the numeric value `12.34` with format `0.00"."` currently exports as `12,34,`, but must export as `12,34.`.Reuse #2263's renderer instead of adding a second locale-rendering implementation. This follow-up keeps PR #2466 independent of #2263.## Required changes- In `crates/engine/src/io.rs`, replace the final rendered-text character swap in the decimal-comma CSV path with locale-aware rendering through `format_value_in`.- Configure the locale with decimal `,` and group `.`.- Convert only numeric decimal and grouping separators. Preserve quoted literals and all other displayed characters.- Preserve the existing full-precision behavior for finite General numbers.- Keep date/time output, default comma CSV behavior, delimiter selection, quoting, and UTF-8 BOM behavior unchanged.- Add regression coverage in the engine CSV export tests (`crates/engine/src/tests.rs` or the CSV tests in `crates/engine/src/io.rs`).## Acceptance criteria- [ ] #2263 has landed before this integration is implemented.- [ ] Semicolon CSV uses `format_value_in` with a decimal-comma locale instead of swapping punctuation in final rendered text.- [ ] A numeric cell containing `12.34` with custom format `0.00"."` exports the field `12,34.`.- [ ] Regression coverage confirms quoted literal commas also remain unchanged.- [ ] Existing General, fixed-decimal, grouping, percent, and currency export behavior remains correct.- [ ] Date/time output and comma CSV behavior remain unchanged.- [ ] Existing CSV delimiter, quoting, and BOM tests still pass.## References- Dependency: https://github.com/storytold/gridcraft/issues/2263- Originating PR: https://github.com/storytold/gridcraft/pull/2466- Review thread: https://github.com/storytold/gridcraft/pull/2466#discussion_r4367990010EOF)

CSV export: comma and semicolon types named after what the file holds
File › Export and Save As now offer two CSV types. Each name says what the file contains:
,1234.5(as formatted, e.g.1,234.50);1.234,50)Dates and times are left as shown.
15.03.2026stays15.03.2026; only number cells swap their marks.Both types start with a UTF-8 byte order mark. Without it, Excel on Windows reads the file as ANSI and accented letters come out garbled (
cittÃ).The comma type now writes commas even for a workbook opened from a
;file. File › Save of an opened CSV still keeps its separator, as before.Commands.
file.exportCsvandfile.saveBytestake:delimiter:","or";";decimal:"."or",";bom:trueorfalse.Without these parameters the output is byte-for-byte unchanged, so the CLI, scripts and existing tests behave as before.
Why the names differ from Excel's
Excel's "Comma delimited" really means the Windows list separator, and that is
,only where the decimal mark is.. Anyone using an English Excel never sees this. I observed it in Excel 365 with the Italian interface and it-IT region on 2026-10-24, using synthetic sheets and temporary files that were then deleted:1,5), UTF-8 with BOM and CRLF.So in Italian, and likewise in German, French and most European regions, Excel's two CSV types differ only by encoding, and the "comma" one contains no commas. As an Italian user I always found a "comma-delimited" file full of semicolons incoherent. GridCraft aims to be compatible with Excel's files, not with its inconsistencies, so:
This is documented for maintainers who use Excel in English, under «CSV names: what the file holds» in
docs/file-format-parity.md.The Italian labels are «CSV UTF-8 (delimitato da punto e virgola) (*.csv)» and «CSV (delimitato da punto e virgola)». The existing «delimitato da virgole» labels are fixed in #2460, which said "separatore di elenco" before.
