PDF export can now preserve several font families from one workbook by mapping their stored names to local TrueType faces. The existing global font options remain available as a fallback for unmapped families.

gridcraft-cli convert book.xlsx report.pdf \
  --pdf-font-family 'Body Sans=/path/to/Body-Regular.ttf' \
  --pdf-font-family-bold 'Body Sans=/path/to/Body-Bold.ttf' \
  --pdf-font-family 'Heading Sans=/path/to/Heading-Regular.ttf' \
  --pdf-font-family-italic 'Heading Sans=/path/to/Heading-Italic.ttf'

MCP, CLI scripts and the control channel use the same file.exportPdf / file.print parameters:

{"command":"file.exportPdf","params":{"path":"report.pdf","fontFamilies":{"Body Sans":{"regular":"/path/to/Body-Regular.ttf","bold":"/path/to/Body-Bold.ttf"},"Heading Sans":{"regular":"/path/to/Heading-Regular.ttf","italic":"/path/to/Heading-Italic.ttf"}}}}
  • Match workbook family names case-insensitively after trimming. Each family requires regular and can supply bold, italic and boldItalic. Omitted styles use that family's regular face. Distinct families have independent PDF resources and advance widths, including two families that would otherwise both map to Helvetica. Named mappings win over an optional global fonts override.
  • Apply mappings to cells, shapes and quoted header/footer family declarations. Charts and headings without stored family names retain their existing fonts or the global override. Alignment, wrapping and shrink-to-fit use the selected face's widths. Workbook geometry and later exports retain their existing settings.
  • Respect the script sandbox and regular-file checks. Cap each face at 64 MiB, mapped families at 32 and font input at 256 MiB per export. Bound character codes to 65,535 distinct Unicode characters per face across all pages. Automatic system-font reads also reject oversized/non-regular inputs before parsing. Unsupported/malformed fonts, outline-embedding restrictions and missing glyphs fail before writing the destination. No font files are committed.
  • Allocate document-wide character codes separately from glyph IDs, with an explicit CID-to-glyph map and ToUnicode map. Shared-glyph Unicode aliases remain distinct during extraction, including across pages and with supplementary characters.
  • Keep the document's font set fixed after its first page: both font setters return an error on later changes. A fallback lookup before loader registration no longer prevents later loading; subsequent measurements and documents use the registered faces while existing documents retain their font set.
  • Add synthetic-font PDF, engine/XLSX, CLI and MCP regression coverage, update usage/parity/roadmap docs, and include my opted-in contributor name.

Dependency and provenance

Builds on the TrueType writer from #1555: plousbooks' patch from #1487 and Dejan Port's system-font/CLI registration. Both original contributors are credited in the first commit. These prerequisite changes are included and adapted to current main because #1555 is still open and conflicts with current main. Preserve current main's non-embedded CID fallback when an installed font cannot cover a run. This is a separate contribution; it does not modify #1555.

#1258 proposes a competing embedding implementation with subsetting. Maintainers still need to choose the shared embedding direction; this PR makes explicit family selection reviewable on the #1555 design. The selection API can be retained if that implementation changes.

Limits

TrueType outlines only: no CFF or font collections. Whole-font embedding; no subsetting, shaping, bidi or variable-font axis selection. Missing styles use their family's regular outline rather than synthesizing bold/italic. Workbook row/column geometry is retained.

Validation

  • After merging main at f6b0cec6, cargo xtask ci: all 10 steps passed, 2,549 tests passed, including full workspace tests/doctests, clippy -D warnings, assets, layers, WASM, parity and keytips. Rust 1.99.1, CRAFT_FONTS_REQUIRED=1 with the CI-pinned craft-fonts revision b076417b5880bd4154bd22f00695b1d28c6bea83; permitted faces verified against the manifests' SHA-256 values.
  • End to end: saved and reopened an XLSX with two workbook families, then exported through CLI convert and a real stdio MCP process with four DejaVu Sans Mono faces and four DejaVu Serif faces. PDF bytes match exactly; all eight exact source font files are embedded once. pdffonts reports CID TrueType embedding with ToUnicode; pdftotext preserves Latin, Greek, Cyrillic and numeric text. Rendered with Poppler and visually checked distinct families/styles, different wrap widths, right alignment, shrink-to-fit and a mapped header family.
  • Poppler rendering and extraction also verified eight font faces, supplementary Unicode and a synthetic shared-glyph alias fixture across two pages, without syntax warnings. The final CLI/MCP exports are byte-identical; FIFO font input is rejected promptly without writing a destination. Regression coverage includes cross-page character-map bounds, tab normalization and automatic fallback input limits.
  • Regression tests also verify rejected face changes preserve glyphs and metrics across pages, late loader registration supplies future documents, registered faces load once, and existing documents retain their original faces.
  • Confirmed a subsequent export restores default fonts. Regression tests also check duplicate/invalid family mappings, family/byte limits, style fallback and missing glyphs without overwriting an existing destination. git diff --check passes.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • PDF exports can embed custom TrueType fonts in regular, bold, italic, and bold-italic styles, with settings available per export through the CLI and PDF export tools.
    • Assign separate fonts to named workbook font families. Exports support up to 32 family mappings and 256 MiB of font data.
    • PDF text supports Unicode search and copying, with fallback fonts for supported characters.
  • Bug Fixes
    • PDF exports report errors for unsupported fonts and missing glyphs instead of silently producing incomplete text.
  • Documentation
    • Updated CLI and PDF export guides with font options, limits, validation, and known text-rendering limitations.

Adapt the TrueType embedding from storytold#1555 to current main while preserving
its CID fallback. Add export-local regular, bold, italic and bold-italic
font paths, matching layout metrics and bounded, sandbox-aware reads.
Reject unsupported embedding and missing glyphs before writing output.

Based on plousbooks' storytold#1487 patch and Dejan Port's storytold#1555 additions.

Walkthrough

Priority: Normal

Change: Feature

Merge Risk: Minimal · up to fd612

The identified PDF font risks are addressed at the current head; the change is mergeable after normal checks.

Security architecture risk: Low · up to fd612

The new font inputs retain file-access checks, bounded reads and export-local ownership. No concrete new security flaw was established in the examined paths. Incomplete coverage and the separate policy for automatic system-font loading leave limited uncertainty.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The added security surface is local font-file access and parsing within the native export process, followed by embedding font data into generated PDFs. Caller-selected paths therefore exercise the process's filesystem privileges; workbook text influences font selection and character-map construction.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • observed — The inspected stored-workbook script path rejects file.* commands before execution, including export and printing. This restriction already exists at the PR base. Explicit font reads additionally check the thread-local script sandbox, so nesting file paths inside font objects does not bypass that reader control.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Explicit face loading checks the sandbox before access, checks regular-file status before and after opening, and bounds bytes actually read. Automatic system-font discovery separately uses direct filesystem reads with regular-file and size checks but no explicit sandbox gate. The examined export command paths are blocked from stored scripts; an exploitable bypass through automatic discovery was not established.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Font validation and rendering errors terminate before the command writes its destination. Successful exports retain the existing temporary-file-and-rename writer. Per-document font snapshots and immutable shared face data limit configuration leakage between repeated exports; the inspected concurrency evidence is ownership-based rather than a dedicated parallel-export test.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Define and test whether automatic system-font discovery is permitted during sandboxed execution. If it is not, apply the same policy gate as explicit font loading. This is policy hardening, not an established reachable vulnerability.

340-340: Trivial · Performance & Scalability · Low value

Cache the system TextFonts in text_width.

text_width builds a new TextFonts on every call. TextFonts::system() allocates a four-slot Vec and clones two Arcs. The fallback fonts themselves load only once, through DEFAULT_FONTS, so the file reads do not repeat. Caching the TextFonts value removes the per-call allocation and reference-count work. Measured widths do not change, because the fallback set is fixed after first use.

🗄️ Data Integrity & Integration | 🟠 Major | 🏗️ Heavy lift

Keep one text-font set per document, or key resources by face identity.

PdfDoc::set_text_fonts can change the active faces after a page exists. add_page snapshots the current TextFonts, but finish aggregates glyphs by numeric slot and selects one face for that slot. If two pages use different faces at the same slot, glyph IDs from an earlier page can be embedded with a later face. Page measurements can also use metrics that differ from the embedded face.

Reject font-set changes after the first page, or key encodings, glyph aggregation, and PDF resources by face identity instead of numeric slot.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Do not permanently cache a missing system-font loader.

default_unicode_fonts() stores [None, None] when LOADER is not registered. A later set_unicode_font_loader() call cannot update DEFAULT_FONTS, so subsequent system-font measurements and fallback rendering continue without the available fonts. Require loader registration before the first lookup, or retry negative results instead of caching them.

Reject both font setters after the first page and construct engine exports with their final font set. Keep early lookups without a loader separate from immutable registered font caches, including width measurements.

Add regression coverage for rejected face changes across pages, late loading, cache reuse and existing document stability.
