Summary

Pictures, charts and shapes inside a grouped shape (<xdr:grpSp>) were dropped on open, with the warning "grouped shapes are not supported and were skipped". In Excel-saved reports this hides whole charts and banners. They are now imported at their group-transformed positions and the grouping is kept: a group saves back as one grpSp, and moving or deleting a member acts on the whole group, as in Excel. Tested on a set of 11 real Excel-saved fleet reports: in two of them, bar charts, text boxes, a logo banner and icons sit inside groups (one with a nested group).

What changed

Model (crates/model/src/group.rs, new)

  • DrawingGroup on Sheet::groups: id (from the same counter as other objects), name, its anchor, its child box (chOff/chExt in EMUs), its flip (flipH/flipV) and rotation (rot), the rot of each member that has one (member_rotations), and its members back to front as DrawingRef (Chart/Image/Shape/Group). Members stay ordinary charts, pictures and shapes in their sheet lists with resolved anchors, so drawing, hit-testing and everything else that reads anchors is unchanged.
  • Helpers: drawing_rect (a group's box is the box around its members), group_anchor, outer_group, group_contents, transform_group (move/size a group and everything in it by one map), set_group_anchor_mode, delete_group. drawing_rect_with unions the boxes of the members group_contents lists, which skips repeats, so each nested group is visited once: a cycle, or a group listed twice, in hand-written JSON costs no more than the objects it holds. Nesting is capped at 64 levels.
  • Workbook::next_object_id counts group ids.

XLSX read (crates/xlsx/src/drawing.rs)

  • One recursive read_object reads top-level objects and group children alike (pic, sp, cxnSp, graphicFrame charts and chartex, nested grpSp, and AlternateContent inside groups).
  • Each group maps its child box onto its box on the sheet (the anchor rectangle for the outermost group), each axis on its own (GroupMap::new): chOff (else off) is the origin, and the scale is the box length over chExt, else over ext, else the enclosing space's scale. So a group of horizontal or vertical lines, which Excel writes with cy="0" (or cx="0") in ext and chExt, keeps its chOff and its scale on the other axis. Children's xfrm go through the map and nested groups compose; a child without xfrm fills the group. Children keep the outer anchor's mode.
  • A flipped group's members are mirrored about the group's box on the flipped axes (ECMA-376 Part 1 §20.1.7.5), and an enclosing group's flips carry into nested groups. The model has no flip or rotation for pictures, charts or shapes, so the members themselves aren't drawn mirrored, and a rotated group is laid out without its rotation. Both cases are reported on open ("a flipped group was laid out mirrored, but its pictures and shapes aren't drawn mirrored", "a rotated group was laid out without its rotation").
  • A rotated chart, picture or shape inside a group keeps its rot on the group (member_rotations) and is drawn unrotated, reported on open ("a rotated picture or shape in a group is drawn without its rotation"). Excel sizes a group by its members' turned boxes, so a member turned about a quarter (45°–135° or 225°–315°, e.g. a 270° axis label) is placed at its turned box: its own box swapped about its centre in the group's child space. Before, it was placed at its unturned box, which often starts left of the group (and of column A, where it was clamped to x 0, widening and shifting the saved group).
  • The group is recorded with its child box. A group whose members are all unsupported is dropped. Unsupported members (SmartArt, OLE frames) are dropped with their own existing warning, so the warning names only what was dropped. The grouped-shapes warning is gone.

XLSX write

  • A grouped object goes out with its outermost group: one anchor (in the group's mode) holding the grpSp, its members in their original order, nested groups as nested grpSp. It's written where the group's first object comes in the part.
  • Member offsets are mapped back into the group's child coordinate space: the space the group was opened (or last moved as a whole) with is kept, and chOff/chExt are the group's current box in that space. An axis on which the group has no extent is written at its own offset at 1:1, on that axis only. A flipped group's members are mirrored back about its current box first, and the group's rot, flipH and flipV are written on its a:xfrm. Saving then reopening leaves positions within EMU rounding.
  • A rotated group turns about the centre of its own box (ECMA-376 Part 1 §20.1.7.5), so it's written with that box (its anchor, which moves and sizes with the group, as the anchor and off/ext) and its chOff/chExt, not the box around the members written: with a dropped SmartArt member, or turned members, that box differs and Excel would turn the members about another point. A turned member goes back to its own box (the turned box swapped back) with its rot.
  • Ungrouped objects are written exactly as before. Ink shapes from main (drawing/ink.rs) go through the same write_obj, so an ink stroke inside a group is written at its child-space offset and size (and with its rot).
  • ink::read reads a stroke inside a group at that transform: it no longer requires offset 0 and an extent equal to the anchor there (the group's map gives the anchor, and the path fills the stroke's box whatever its size), and accepts a rot, which the group keeps. So a grouped stroke in the form GridCraft writes opens as ink, whether the group's child offsets are sheet EMUs (as in an Excel group) or a child scale other than 1:1 (as GridCraft saves a resized group), and reopens as ink after saving. A stroke whose sp has more than that form, such as the xdr:style and xdr:txBody Excel adds to the shapes it saves, still falls back to a shape, as an ungrouped one does: checked with such a stroke in a group, which opens as a rectangle while the same stroke without them opens as ink. A flipped stroke also falls back to a shape, as its flip isn't kept. Ungrouped strokes are read as before.
  • A group that hasn't been edited since it was opened is written with the a:xfrm and anchor it was read with, and so are its members. Edits that count are any change to the group's anchor, child box, flips, rotation, member rotations, membership or any member's anchor. Before, its off/ext were recomputed from GridCraft's column widths and row heights, which can differ from Excel's. In a file Excel saved with baseColWidth="10" and Aptos Narrow 12, Excel's columns are 825500 EMU and GridCraft's 762000, so ext came out at 3048000 against a chExt of 3302000. Excel scales members by ext/chExt, so it drew them squeezed. An edited group from a file is still recomputed, but its top-level ext keeps the file's ratio to chExt, so moving a group writes the file's ext again. When a recomputed parent holds an unedited nested group, the nested group is placed by the box it was read with, which its child space spans.

Commands (crates/engine/src/cmd/insert.rs)

  • object.move, object.delete and object.setAnchorMode on a grouped chart, picture or shape act on its outermost group: moving a member moves (and sizing scales) the whole group by the same map, deleting it deletes the group, and the group takes the anchor mode. They also accept kind: "group".
  • A move that would take any part of the group left of column A or above row 1 stops the whole group at the sheet's edge (transform_group shifts the map so its charts, pictures and shapes, and the own boxes of rotated groups, which are saved, stay on the sheet). Before, each member was clamped onto the edge on its own, so the members piled up there and the group's layout was lost. An unrotated group's own box only fixes its child space and isn't saved, so it doesn't count: it's wider than the members once one was erased or dropped on open, and would stop the group short of the edge.
  • object.delete takes member: true to delete a grouped object alone (Sheet::remove_from_group): the rest of its group stays grouped, and a group left empty goes too.
  • Inserting or deleting rows or columns, and moving columns (crates/engine/src/cmd/sheet.rs), move a group's own anchor with its members, so a rotated group's saved box follows them.

UI (crates/ui-egui)

  • Clicking a grouped object selects its outermost group: the group is framed as one, drags move or resize it, and Delete removes it.
  • The eraser rubs out an ink stroke inside a group on its own (object.delete with member: true), as it never deletes pictures, charts or shapes; before, it hit the group and erased nothing.

Tests

  • grouped_objects_import_as_groups_through_nested_group_transforms (crates/xlsx/src/tests/fixtures.rs). A twoCellAnchor editAs="oneCell" over B2:F12 holds an outer group at 0.5 scale with a SmartArt frame, a picture and a nested group (a further 0.1 scale) holding a chart and a text box. It asserts the resolved positions, both groups with their members in order, anchors, child boxes and modes, and that only the SmartArt frame is reported. After write_xlsx it checks the part has one anchor with grpSp › pic, grpSp › graphicFrame, sp, in that order, with member offsets in the file's child coordinates (within 2 EMU). Reopened, the groups and every position match.
  • object_commands_on_a_grouped_member_act_on_the_group (crates/engine/src/tests.rs). Moving a member of a nested group moves the other member by the same offset and leaves an ungrouped picture alone. Sizing the group scales its members. Setting a member's anchor mode sets it on the whole group. Deleting a member deletes both groups and their pictures, and undo restores them. Inserting a row and a column moves both groups' anchors with their pictures.
  • a_group_of_horizontal_lines_maps_each_axis_on_its_own (crates/xlsx/src/tests/fixtures.rs). A 200 × 0 px anchor holds a group with ext/chExt cy="0", chOff away from off, and two collinear connectors. They open at x 64 and 164, y 20, 100 px wide, and reopen in the same places after write_xlsx.
  • a_flipped_group_mirrors_its_members_and_keeps_its_transform (crates/xlsx/src/tests/fixtures.rs). A group with flipH="1" rot="5400000" holds a rectangle at each end and an unflipped nested group. The end rectangles swap ends, the rectangle in the nested group is mirrored with the outer group, and two group warnings are reported. The saved a:xfrm has rot="5400000" and flipH, the end rectangles are back at their file child offsets (within 2 EMU), and reopened, every position, the flip and the rotation match.
  • a_rotated_group_keeps_its_box_when_a_member_is_dropped (crates/xlsx/src/tests/fixtures.rs). The reviewer's case: a group with rot="5400000" over B2:F12 holds a SmartArt frame in its left half and rectangle A in its right half. Saved, the anchor still starts at B2, off/ext are (609600, 190500) 2438400 × 1905000 and chOff/chExt (0, 0) 2438400 × 1905000, with A at child (1219200, 0); before, the group was written with A's box (off (1828800, 190500), chOff (1219200, 0)). Moved a column right with transform_group, the anchor starts at C2, off is (1219200, 190500) and the child box and A's offset are unchanged.
  • a_member_turned_a_quarter_is_placed_at_its_turned_box_and_keeps_its_rotation (crates/xlsx/src/tests/fixtures.rs). Modelled on the 'Event Count' labels in driver-safety-scorecard.xlsx: a group 16 px into column A holds a rectangle filling it and a text box with rot="16200000" at child x −304800. The text box opens at its turned box (27, 21, 27 × 145 px; before, clamped to x 0), with one rotated-member warning and its rotation on the group. Saved, the anchor from colOff, off, ext, chOff and chExt are the file's, and the text box is back at (−304800, 762000) 1381125 × 257175 with rot="16200000"; reopened, it's in the same place with the same rotation.
  • Model unit tests in group.rs for group boxes, outer_group, transforms and deletion, and a_group_listing_itself_twice_is_measured_once: a group whose members are [Shape(3), Group(5), Group(5)] is measured with fewer than 100 calls to the leaf function (before, the measurement branched at each of 64 levels and the test hit the limit). only_a_rotated_groups_own_box_stops_it_at_the_sheet_edge: a nested group whose stored box reaches 80 px left of its members is moved 120 px left with its outer group, and the members reach x 0 (before, they stopped at x 30); the same group rotated stops with its own box at x 0 and the members at x 30.
  • ink_strokes_in_a_group_round_trip_at_their_child_space_transform (crates/xlsx/src/tests/ink_roundtrip.rs). An Excel-style group (chOff = off, sheet EMUs) over B2:F12 holds a rectangle and two strokes, one with rot="60000". Both open as ink at (84, 30) and (200, 120), 100 × 50 px, with their points and the rotation on the group; saved and reopened, they're the same. Sized to 1.5 times with transform_group, saved (child scale 2:3) and reopened, they're ink at (94, 35) and (268, 170), 150 × 75 px, with the same points. A grouped stroke with flipH isn't read as ink.
  • moving_a_grouped_member_past_the_sheet_edge_keeps_the_group_together (crates/engine/src/tests.rs). Pictures at B3 and D3 are grouped; object.move sends the D3 one to A3 and 100 px up. The group stops at the corner of the sheet with the pictures 128 px apart (before, both ended at x 0), and moving it back puts both where they started.
  • deleting_one_member_of_a_group_leaves_the_rest_grouped (crates/engine/src/tests.rs). An outer group holds a picture, a nested group holding one stroke, and a second stroke. object.delete with member: true on the first stroke deletes it and the emptied nested group; the outer group keeps the picture and the other stroke. Undo restores it all.
  • a_group_with_an_erased_member_still_reaches_the_sheet_edge (crates/engine/src/tests.rs). Pictures at B3 and D3 are grouped with the B3 one's box as the group's; object.delete with member: true erases the B3 one, and object.move sends the other to A1. It reaches (0, 0) (before, it stopped at x 128), is still there in its group after saving and reopening, and undo moves it back.
  • the_eraser_erases_a_grouped_ink_stroke_and_leaves_the_rest_of_its_group (crates/ui-egui/tests/interaction.rs). With the eraser on, clicking one of two grouped strokes deletes it, through real input; the group keeps the other.
  • The tests added for the review rounds each fail without their fix: ink_strokes_in_a_group_round_trip_at_their_child_space_transform on 092c0de with the test file from 7c57e93 (cargo test -p gridcraft-xlsx ink_strokes_in_a_group); moving_a_grouped_member_past_the_sheet_edge_keeps_the_group_together, deleting_one_member_of_a_group_leaves_the_rest_grouped and the_eraser_erases_a_grouped_ink_stroke_and_leaves_the_rest_of_its_group on 7c57e93 with the test files from d73faba (cargo test -p gridcraft-engine, cargo test -p gridcraft-ui-egui --test interaction); only_a_rotated_groups_own_box_stops_it_at_the_sheet_edge (members at x 30, not 0) and a_group_with_an_erased_member_still_reaches_the_sheet_edge (x 128, not 0) on d73faba before the round-2 fix. The earlier tests weren't re-run with their fixes reverted in these rounds.
  • On the two real reports with groups: no grouped-shapes warning on open. A saved copy contains the same grpSp elements (checked with unzip and grep) and reopens with the same groups. Screenshots matched the previous rendering at the first two commits. Neither report has a flipped, rotated or zero-extent group. driver-safety-scorecard.xlsx ('Top & Bottom Performers') has two 270° text boxes in its outer group: they're now reported on open ("a rotated picture or shape in a group is drawn without its rotation") and open at their turned boxes inside the group. Saved with the third commit, that group keeps the file's anchor from colOff 157146, off.x 157146, chOff (157146, 788383) and chExt 7315205 × 7997705 (the second commit wrote 0, 0, (−3130, 788383) and 7475481 wide), and the text boxes go back at child x −304800 and −285750 with rot="16200000". ext is 7172330 × 8026280 against the file's 7162805 × 7988180, as the second commit wrote it apart from the clamp's widening: Excel's to offset in column F (129.5 px) runs past GridCraft's 128 px column, so the anchor measures 1 px wider. The height was already 4 px taller. Both come from the general anchor geometry, not the group code.
  • gridcraft-cli check (release) on all 11 reports at b19cd90 prints the same output byte for byte as main 84acf62: 261,528 formula cells checked, all matched, 0 mismatched. In 8 of the 11 files the round trip differs only in the package category, by the same differences on both builds: lost chartStyle/chartColorStyle relationships, themeOverride in two files, and slicer/slicerCache in ELD-Unverified-Logs, which PivotTables: slicers from XLSX files are shown, filter their PivotTables and are saved #719 fixes. None of these come from this PR. Warnings differ only in the two reports that have groups: Driver-Safety-Scorecard keeps 3 warnings, swapping "grouped shapes ... skipped" for the rotated-member warning, and opens 2 grouped column charts and 4 grouped shapes that main drops. Watchdog-Report goes from 2 warnings to 1 and from 0 images to 4.
  • In Driver-Safety-Scorecard and Watchdog-Report, every outermost group moved to A1, then saved and reopened, writes from col 0 / row 0 with a non-negative anchor, and positions match within 8e-6 px.
  • Checks on the head commit (b19cd90), with CARGO_TARGET_DIR set: cargo fmt --all; cargo clippy -p gridcraft-model -p gridcraft-xlsx -p gridcraft-engine --all-targets -- -D warnings (clean); cargo test -p gridcraft-model -p gridcraft-xlsx -p gridcraft-engine (all pass: model 18, xlsx 179, engine 290); cargo xtask ci passes all 8 steps (fmt, clippy, test, assets, layers, wasm, parity, keytips).
  • grouped_shapes_preserve_source_transform_across_sheet_metric_mismatch (crates/xlsx/src/tests/fixtures.rs). The group from the Excel file below (baseColWidth="10", off=chOff 1905000,127000, ext=chExt 3302000 × 2857500, Box and Oval at y 2349500) is saved unedited with the same four pairs and member offsets. Moved down three rows, it is saved with ext equal to chExt (3302000). Without the fix, the unedited save fails on the group's off, and the moved save writes ext 3048000 against a chExt of 3302000.

Checked in Excel

Excel for Mac 16.114, on a synthetic sheet built in Excel: a chart, a rectangle and an oval grouped (group 6), and two shapes grouped and rotated 30° (group 7), with baseColWidth="10" and Aptos Narrow 12.

  • Saved by bd22895 (before this fix), the file opens with no repair prompt. The groups are squeezed, though: group 6 is written with ext 3048000 × 2949864 against a chExt of 3302000 × 2949864, and its Box and Oval move from y 2349500 to 2441864. Group 7's ext is 1270000 against a chExt of 1397000.
  • Saved by this head with nothing edited, every a:xfrm, member offset and xdr:from in the drawing part is the same as in Excel's file. The xdr:to rows aren't: group 6 ends at row 14 + 47336 EMU against Excel's 14 + 139700, because GridCraft sizes rows 1–5 at 17.45 pt where Excel uses 16. This happens on main too, for any anchored object over those rows.
  • Excel opens both this head's file and the same file with the chart group moved to E20 with no repair prompt. The rotated group stays turned 30°. Excel still places the groups 8 pt right and 6% wider, and 3% shorter: group 6 at 158, 10, 276 × 217.7 pt against 150, 10, 260 × 225 in Excel's file. The cause is the worksheet, which is the same on main: GridCraft writes defaultColWidth="11.421875" in place of baseColWidth="10" (Excel shows 69 pt columns instead of 65), and rows 1–5 as ht="17.45" without customHeight (Excel fits them back to 16 pt, but the anchors' xdr:to was worked out at 17.45). Both are listed under Not done.

Review

Three adversarial review rounds ran, each by a reviewer that didn't write the code.

  • Round 1 found that grouped ink strokes saved at a non-zero child offset, a child scale other than 1:1, or with a rot reopened as empty rectangles, and that moving a member past column A or row 1 piled the group's members up on the edge. Changed: ink::read reads grouped strokes at their child-space transform with their rot (7c57e93); transform_group stops the whole group at the sheet's edge; and the eraser, which hit the group and erased nothing, now rubs out a grouped stroke alone with object.delete member: true (d73faba).
  • Round 2 found that the edge stop counted each group's stored box. For an unrotated group that box only fixes its child space and goes stale once a member is erased or dropped on open, so the group stopped 128 px or 156 px short of column A and row 1 and could never reach them. Changed: only the stored boxes of rotated groups, which are saved, count, along with the charts, pictures and shapes (b19cd90, two new tests). It also flagged three claims here: the claim that Excel-grouped strokes open as ink is now limited to the form GridCraft writes (a stroke with Excel's xdr:style/xdr:txBody falls back to a shape, checked); "points and rotation are saved unchanged" for quarter-turned strokes is replaced by what is kept (off/ext/rot, and the same shape with rewritten path units); and the reverted-fix and CI claims are replaced by the checks above, which were actually run.
  • Round 3, on b19cd90, found no defects. A group whose stored box goes off the sheet (plain, flipped, nested at 2:1, or holding a rotated inner group) saves with xdr:from col/row at 0 or above, which ST_ColID/ST_RowID require; a shifted or negative chOff is valid ST_Coordinate. These groups reopen with members within 0 px and save the same drawing part a second time, and undo and redo work. It corrected the fleet-report line above, which had said 0 round-trip differences, and re-ran the reports.
  • Merge of main f1894c6 (bd22895). Only docs/file-format-parity.md conflicted (its header line and changelog rows); both sides' rows are kept, newest first, and main's change is listed as "previously" in the header. An adversarial review of the merge against both parents found nothing; it also checked the code that merged without conflicts against main's new formula length and nesting limit (Formula parser: Excel's 8,192-character limit and postfix nesting (never crash) #1330) and the large-range clear recalculation (fix(edit): recalculate all changed cells after large-range clears #1128). cargo xtask ci passes all 8 steps on the merge.
  • Reviewed by @FredApps at bd22895 (review, COMMENTED; source reading of the model code plus the hosted cargo xtask ci). He found no defect and left the documented gaps under Not done and the new grpSp write-back to a maintainer. Reply.
  • Round 4, on the source-transform fix (80273f0, 13cb458, 369a1be). It found that the source transform was reused after a change to the group's rotation or flips, or to a member's rotation, which would put the old geometry under the new rot/flip attributes. Changed: those are now recorded on open and compared (369a1be). A second pass found nothing more, and a review of this description against the code and the Excel reports found nothing. cargo xtask ci passes all 8 steps on 369a1be.
  • Merge of main 23829d8 (89e9e5e). crates/xlsx/src/drawing.rs, crates/ui-egui/tests/interaction.rs and docs/file-format-parity.md conflicted. In drawing.rs, main's right-to-left paragraph direction (XLSX: keep right-to-left paragraph direction in text boxes and shapes #1935) is kept in the shared shape read and write_obj, so grouped and ungrouped shapes keep it alike; both sides' UI tests are kept; the parity doc keeps main's single header line with this PR's change listed first, and both sides' rows. An adversarial review of the merge against both parents found nothing. cargo xtask ci passes all 8 steps on the merged head.
  • CodeRabbit on the merged head (3 comments). Changed in ed60501 and 8507a39, then reviewed adversarially with no findings; cargo xtask ci passes all 8 steps on 8507a39.
    • Nested group: an edited nested group inside an unedited outer group was written with its old off/ext over a new, smaller child box, so Excel would stretch it. A nested group's saved transform is now reused only while that group is unedited too; otherwise it's placed in the outer group's child space. New test edited_nested_group_keeps_member_scale_on_roundtrip fails without the fix (scale 0.4 against 0.2).
    • Quadratic lookups: group_contents tracks the members it has seen in a HashSet (order unchanged), and the XLSX writer builds a member → parent map once per drawing.
    • arrange.align: it moved a grouped member's own anchor, outside its group's transform. It now refuses grouped objects ("objects in a group can't be aligned yet"). The UI doesn't call it.
  • CodeRabbit, outside the diff (in this review): a double-click on a text box in a group selected the group and didn't start text editing. Changed (a6ae9dd, e100779, 34f60a7): the double-click looks up the member under the pointer with chartview::hit_object and edits that text box; the member is selected while editing, the group again after commit or Escape, and a click away selects what was clicked. The adversarial review found that the first version left the member selected after editing, and that the second let the restored group override a click away; both are fixed, and a third pass found nothing. The new UI test checks the selection during and after editing (including a click on a cell), commits text, then saves and reopens the XLSX file and checks the text and the group's members; its selection checks fail on the earlier commits. cargo xtask ci passes all 8 steps on f8d136d (34f60a7 plus formatting).
  • Merge of main 06920de (d8d9a8b; head 16372df). Conflicts: crates/ui-egui/src/chartview.rs (group hit-testing combined with main's show-objects hiding), crates/xlsx/src/drawing.rs (recursive group reader kept, with picture bytes moved to main's Arc), docs/file-format-parity.md, docs/gaps.md. Adversarial review of the merge: the resolution had dropped the group selection frame. It is restored in 16372df, with a regression assertion; hidden groups get no frame. cargo xtask ci passes all 8 steps on 16372df.
  • CodeRabbit on 16372df (2 inline): the eraser deleted ink while objects were hidden (hit_object bypassed hit's show-objects guard), and a mismatched closing tag in the nested-group fixture. Both fixed in 4d30b7f, the first with a regression test. Adversarial review: ship. cargo xtask ci passes all 8 steps on 4d30b7f.

Not done

  • No Group / Ungroup commands, and no selecting a single member inside a group (Excel's second click). object.delete with member: true (used by the eraser) is the only way to take one object out of a group.
  • arrange.align refuses grouped objects, and the other arrange commands (distribute, bring forward) still act on the selected objects one by one.
  • Structural edits move members by their own anchors, as before; the box of an unrotated group follows them, and inserting, deleting or moving rows and columns moves a group's own anchor too. Sorting doesn't move a group's own anchor, so a rotated group sorted with its rows is saved with its old box.
  • Drawing order of charts against shapes is unchanged: text boxes in a group with charts are drawn under the charts, where Excel draws them on top.
  • Rotated groups and rotated members of groups aren't drawn rotated, and members of a flipped group aren't drawn mirrored (all reported on open). The rot of groups and of their members and the flips of groups are written back; members' own flipH/flipV aren't kept. A member turned by other than about a quarter is placed at its unturned box, so one whose unturned box starts left of column A is still clamped onto the sheet. Rotation of ungrouped pictures and shapes is still dropped on open, as before. A grouped ink stroke turned about a quarter is drawn unrotated in its turned box, so its points are stretched to that box until rotation is drawn. Saved, its off, ext and rot are the file's, and its path draws the same shape: the path's w/h and points are rewritten in the turned box's EMUs (a 200 × 100 path in a 952500 × 476250 stroke turned 90° goes out as 476250 × 952500, the point (100, 80) as (238125, 762000)), but each point sits at the same fraction of the path box. A second save writes the same drawing part byte for byte.
  • An edited group from a file has its members placed again with GridCraft's row heights and column widths. In the Excel file above, moving the chart group puts Box and Oval 92364 EMU lower in the group's child space than Excel had them.
  • The worksheet's column widths and row heights aren't written as Excel had them, which moves and resizes anchored objects in Excel, grouped or not. A sheet with baseColWidth="10" is saved with defaultColWidth="11.421875" (69 pt columns in Excel instead of 65), and rows of default height are saved with ht="17.45" and no customHeight, which Excel fits back to 16 pt. This is the same on main.
  • Shape names are generated again from the drawing's ids (Excel's Shape_1 becomes Shape 3), as on main. In a drawing with groups, the group ids come first, so the chart also changes from Chart 1 to Chart 2.
  • Shapes lose their <xdr:style> (lnRef/fillRef/effectRef/fontRef) on save, so a shape styled only by the theme opens with no fill or outline. This is the same on main with ungrouped shapes.
  • A chart's automatic title (<c:title> with only <c:overlay val="0"/>) is dropped on save and autoTitleDeleted becomes 1, so Excel shows no title. This is the same on main.

Tested on real files.

Our corpus (256 real workbooks) has one workbook with a grouped shape: a sheet whose header is a grpSp holding one picture (a 44×44 pt logo anchored at B1, the kind of thing a template exports). Excel shows the logo; main (fc45b7f) drops it — the cell is empty; with #685 the logo is drawn at B1 like Excel (compared against Excel 2016's own picture of the group via COM CopyPicture).

gridcraft-cli check over all 256 workbooks: identical to main (no calculation or round-trip change). No other grouped drawings (charts or shapes inside groups) in our files, so that part is untested here.

Thanks. A logo inside a group that main dropped and this PR draws at B1, matched against Excel's own picture, is exactly the case this fixes. Charts and shapes inside groups were tested on the fleet reports described above, including a nested group. The PR also keeps the grouping: the group saves back as one grpSp, and moving or deleting it acts on the whole group.

Rechecked a2ba942: the grouped logo on our sheet renders pixel-identically to the previous head (still matching Excel), and the 256 workbooks are unchanged.

neilcawse and others added 3 commits October 13, 2026 13:12
Objects inside an <xdr:grpSp> were dropped on open, so grouped charts and
pictures (e.g. PivotCharts and report banners in Excel-saved workbooks)
vanished. Group children are now imported at their group-transformed
positions: each child's a:xfrm is mapped from the group's child box
(chOff/chExt) onto the group's box on the sheet, nested groups compose, and
a missing or zero child extent falls back to the group's own off/ext.

The grouping is kept: Sheet::groups holds each DrawingGroup (name, anchor,
child box and members back to front, nested groups by reference) while the
members stay ordinary charts, pictures and shapes with resolved anchors. On
save a group goes out as one anchor holding the grpSp, members in order
with offsets mapped back into the group's child coordinate space, so a
reopen gives the same positions and groups. object.move, object.delete and
object.setAnchorMode on a member act on its outermost group (also by
kind "group"), and clicking a grouped object in the grid selects the group.
Unsupported members (SmartArt, OLE) are dropped with their own warning;
the grouped-shapes warning is gone.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
… flips and rotation

A group listing a nested group (or itself) twice made drawing_rect branch at every level and
never return; it now unions the leaves of group_contents. A group whose child extent is zero on
one axis (a group of horizontal or vertical lines) lost chOff and its scale on both axes; each
axis is now mapped on its own and falls back to the enclosing space's scale. A flipped group's
members are mirrored about its box (enclosing flips carry into nested groups), and the group's
rot/flipH/flipV are saved back; rotation isn't laid out and is reported on open, as is the
unmirrored content of a flipped group.
…ned members at their turned box and keep their rotation

A rotated group turns about the centre of its own box, so it is now written
with that box (its anchor, which moves and sizes with the group) and its
chOff/chExt instead of the box around the members written: a dropped SmartArt
member or a turned member no longer moves the rotation centre. Inserting,
deleting or moving rows and columns now moves a group's own anchor too.

A rotated member's rot is kept on its group (member_rotations), written back,
and reported on open. A member turned about a quarter is placed at its turned
box, as Excel sizes groups by it, so a 270° axis label whose own box starts
left of column A is no longer clamped onto the sheet, which shifted and
widened the saved group.

Thanks for rechecking. 092c0de came after your check: it is a2ba942 rebased onto main (84acf62), with the same three commits. The one code change is from the merge with #712 (ink round trip). Ink strokes inside a group are now saved in the group's coordinate space and with its rotation, the same as the other members. Pictures, charts and shapes inside groups are handled exactly as in a2ba942, so your logo should still render the same.

Local contributor and others added 4 commits October 14, 2026 09:23
…d-space transform

The writer saves an ink stroke inside a group at its child-space offset,
size and rotation, but the reader still required offset 0, an extent equal
to the anchor in sheet EMUs and no rotation. A grouped stroke saved at a
non-zero child offset or a child scale other than 1:1, or with a rotation,
reopened as an empty rectangle and its points were lost; a stroke grouped by
Excel never opened as ink. Inside a group the anchor comes from the group's
map and the path fills the stroke's box whatever its size, so the reader now
only requires a positive extent there and accepts a rotation, which the group
keeps. Flipped strokes still fall back to a shape. Ungrouped strokes are read
as before.
… the eraser rubs out grouped strokes

object.move on a grouped member applied the requested map to every member,
and each member was clamped onto the sheet on its own, so a move past column
A or row 1 piled the members up on the edge and lost the group's layout.
transform_group now shifts the map so the box around the members and the
groups' own boxes stops at the sheet's edge, which covers moves and sizing
by every caller.

Clicking a grouped ink stroke with the eraser hit the group and erased
nothing. The eraser now hits the stroke itself and deletes it with
object.delete member: true, which takes one object out of its group and
deletes it, leaving the rest grouped and dropping a group left empty.
An unrotated group's stored box only fixes its child space and goes stale
once a member is erased or dropped on open; counting it stopped the group
short of column A and row 1.

I read the model code (group.rs, transform_group, delete_group, remove_from_group, the depth and repeat guards) and the PR description with its tests, and found no defect there. I am not approving because the description lists what is intentionally wrong or missing, and that is a product decision for a maintainer.

Question for a maintainer: is it acceptable to merge grouping with these documented gaps?

  • Rotated groups, rotated members and flipped groups are laid out but drawn unrotated and unmirrored (reported on open), and a member turned by something other than about a quarter that starts left of column A is still clamped onto the sheet.
  • Text boxes in a group with charts are drawn under the charts, where Excel draws them on top.
  • There is no Group / Ungroup command and no way to select one member; object.delete with member:true (used by the eraser) is the only way to take an object out of a group.
  • Sorting does not move a rotated group's saved box.

Also note that the PR now keeps grouped objects as groups on save (previously they were dropped on open), so files that used to lose their grouped content on a round trip now write grpSp back. That seems intended; I mention it because it is a visible change for existing users.

Validation: source reading of the model code plus the hosted check "cargo xtask ci", which passed on this head (bd22895). I did not re-read every line of the 541-line drawing.rs reader and writer change, so this is not a full approval review. No local tests were run (builds are paused).

Thanks, @FredApps. The gap list you quote is the one under Not done, and each item there is reported or behaves as described. Whether to merge with those gaps is a maintainer call.

On the visible change: yes, it's intended. On main a grouped shape and everything in it is dropped on open, with the warning "grouped shapes are not supported and were skipped". With this PR the members are imported, and a save writes the grpSp back with its members in their original order. On the two real reports with groups, a saved copy contains the same grpSp elements and reopens with the same groups (Tests section).

Merge Risk: Low · up to 16372

With drawing objects hidden, the eraser tool can still delete an ink stroke the user cannot see. One XLSX test fixture also contains a mismatched closing tag that only parses because the reader is lenient. Both are small, localized fixes. The rest of the grouped-drawing change looks mergeable once they are addressed.

Security architecture risk: Low · up to 16372

Import limits and whole-workbook undo contain most failures. However, malformed saved groups can leave inconsistent membership or surviving descendants after deletion. The demonstrated impact is confined to the affected workbook.

Retained concerns

  • Low · reliability · inferred: Native JSON accepts group graphs without enforcing exclusive ownership or maximum depth before destructive edits. If two groups reference the same object, deleting one removes the object globally but leaves the other group's reference dangling. For graphs exceeding the traversal limit, deletion can remove an intermediate group while leaving deeper descendants behind. This weakens the new ownership and cleanup contract. XLSX import's bounded, freshly allocated hierarchy and complete-workbook undo limit the exposure and provide recovery.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The demonstrated ownership failure requires opening a crafted native JSON workbook and subsequently deleting a group. Its direct scope is drawing objects and membership in the active sheet; the inspected operation does not select another document or a host resource.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Nested picture imports reject external relationships. Referenced picture and chart content is read from entries in the opened ZIP package. Existing limits remain 512 MiB per part, 1 GiB cumulative decompression, and 200,000 ZIP entries; group import stops at 64 levels.
  • observed — Chart relationship handling lacks the picture branch's explicit external-target rejection in both base and head. Newly supported nested charts inherit that behavior, but the inspected sink remains package-local reading rather than network fetching.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Grouped text-box editing retains document and sheet identity checks and a protected-sheet precondition. A failed commit preserves the draft, while successful completion or cancellation restores the saved selection.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Validate or normalize native group graphs at the deserialization boundary so editing receives a defined ownership structure, consistent reference targets, and an enforced depth policy. Reject malformed graphs or report any repairs rather than silently relying on truncated traversal for cleanup.

🟡 Minor · Use the raw member hit for grouped text-box editing. · chartview.rs:516-527

crates/ui-egui/src/chartview.rs:516-527
🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Use the raw member hit for grouped text-box editing.

chartview::hit intentionally promotes grouped shapes to kind == "group" for selection. The grid then checks only kind == "shape" before starting text editing. A double-click on a grouped text box therefore selects the group and does not enter text editing.

Keep group promotion for selection. Use chartview::hit_object for the double-click text-edit check so the original text-box member is passed to app.begin_text_box_edit.

@coderabbitai On the outside-diff comment about chartview.rs:516-527 (grouped text-box editing): fixed in a6ae9dd, e100779 and 34f60a7 (formatting in f8d136d). A double-click now looks up the raw member under the pointer with chartview::hit_object and starts text editing on that text box. While editing, the member is selected; after the text is committed or Escape is pressed, the group is selected again, and a click away selects what was clicked. A new UI test double-clicks a grouped text box, checks the selection during and after editing, commits text, then saves and reopens the XLSX file and checks the text and the group's members.

Review comments at @crates/ui-egui/src/grid.rs:
- Line 2099: Update the eraser condition in interact to check that objects are
not hidden using the existing objects_hidden helper before calling hit_object;
preserve the current behavior of the remaining hit and deletion logic.

Review comments at @crates/xlsx/src/tests/fixtures.rs:
- Line 610: Correct the mismatched closing tag in the “Erase” shape fixture so
its xdr:txBody element closes with the matching xdr:txBody tag. Leave the rest
of the fixture unchanged.
