Merge changes from upstream
The idea is that you can request (and process) batches of messages instead of just one at a time.
We need to deal with the case whereby we end up with a buffer that is smaller than the max size, but no new messages are coming in. Because we wait for the buffer to reach the max size, we will never process the buffer! That is bad.
Forgot to bump when making release 0.0.7, so skipping to 0.0.8 for consistency
