Superseded by #355, which uses the newer community row name format.

An overhaul to the General Param community names for DS1/DS1R.
Not all of the params are done yet, but I figured I'd put up a draft PR to get feedback on formatting and the like.
Aside from minor fix commits, every param is split into its own commit to make looking at changes easier

I do also have some notes on my changes to give reasoning for changes, or to mark a translation I am unsure of.

Character Names

Many names have been replaced with what the DS1R FuturePress guidebook calls them, as I would consider it more up to date and accurate than the original DS1 guidebook. Although with that said, in some cases the game itself has more than one name for a character, and sometimes that is slightly different than the guidebook. For example, NPC summons/invasions usually will have a shorter name compared to the NPC's more formal title ("Knight Solaire" in game vs "Solaire of Astora" in the guidebook).

I hope using DS1R guidebook names doesn't cause any confusion, because basically every wiki has at least a few incorrect names (in the case of the Wikidot its mostly that they use the old DS1 guidebook names. For fextralife its because its absolute garbage and has just made up names)

Class name translations:
Many older machine translations have some of the classes incorrect, so I wanted to show how I've changed them based on cross-referencing how the params are used as well as the kanji vs translations which were already correct.

  • "Sorcerer" -> "Pyromancer" (Sometimes params labelled as Sorcerer were already correct, those are unchanged)
  • "Wizard" & "Magician" -> "Sorcerer"
  • "Monk" -> "Cleric"
  • "Voyeur" -> "Thief"
  • "Not possessed" & "What You Don't Have" -> "Deprived" (I just think this one is funny)

I don't think I actually changed any param names for this, but I do want to make note of it. "Marvellous" in Marvellous Chester's name is using the UK English spelling of the word, even though the game I believe mostly uses US English? However the messages for when he invades you and the guidebook call him "Marvelous Chester" with the US English spelling (1 L rather than 2). I've decided to stick with the UK spelling that he is called in his own dialogue.

Unused params named "Witch Mallows" has been changed to "Witch Beatrice". This one is a bit of a stretch since all but one param still named "Witch Mallows" (or "魔女マロース") is unused. Witch Beatrice's params are all called simply "Witch" (or "魔女"), except the FaceGenParam she uses, which was named "魔女マロース", so I'm assuming its the same character. Since this is unused content, I could definitely see leaving it as is.

For NPCs that have multiple variants, I've added little descriptive labels to their name to clarify which one they are, including:

  • if an NPC param is a summon
  • Invader
  • Invaded (black eye orb stuff)
  • Hollow
  • Black phantom (enemies spawned by Gravelord Servant)
  • Weapon (for enemies with multiple weapon variants)
  • Unused (if not immediately clear from name, although I probably missed some unused enemy variants for specific areas)
  • Basically whatever else the devs left notes for

Area Names

Mostly just in case someone wants to know what the internal names actually refer to

  • Base -> Firelink Shrine
  • Castle 1 -> 1st Half is Undead Burg, 2nd Half is Undead Parish
  • Castle 2 -> The Depths
  • Moriwaba -> 1st Half appears to be the Moonlight Butterfly part of Darkroot Garden/Basin, and 2nd Half appears to be the area after the Crest of Artorias door
  • Cemetery 1 -> The Catacombs
  • Cemetery 2 -> Tomb of the Giants
  • Underground Lake -> Ash Lake
  • Kagemachi -> Blighttown
  • Closed City -> Demon Ruins/Lost Izalith
  • Royal Castle 1/Ojo 1 -> Sen's Fortress
  • Royal Castle 2/Ojo 2 -> Anor Londo
    • For some reason this was translated in 2 ways sometimes. Ojo appears to be the pronunciation for the Kanji rather than a translation.
  • Abyss -> New Londo Ruins
    • While the Abyss is an actual area, its usage here seems to imply they're just talking about New Londo as a whole
  • Crystal Tower -> Duke's Archives/Crystal Cave
  • Great Tomb -> Kiln of the First Flame
  • Tutorial -> Undead Asylum
  • Painting World -> Painted World (I've only seen this listed in GameAreaParam, not sure if it is used anywhere else)

Other

I've replaced references to "DS2" with "DeS2", to clarify that it is meant to be for "Demon's Souls 2" (aka Dark Souls 1), rather than for Dark Souls 2.
Although tbh it probably would be better to replace it with something like "DS1 Proto".

the Skeleton NpcThinkParams that are labelled with '"Lunging Drill" Attack' are the ones that do that weird emperor palpatine jump and spin attack at you in the Catacombs. A translation of the JP is more like "Screw" attack, but this is another thing where I decided to take the name from the guidebook, since i figured anything I came up with would probably be confusing to someone no matter what and at least the guidebook name is kinda official.

Needs better translations

My Japanese skills are very very beginner, and while my translations aren't just dropped into machine translation, I did make heavy use of a dictionary and google translate, the latter of which mostly to just try and understand context a bit better, although even the raw output from that now is a hell of a lot better than whatever was used to machine translate many of these params like over a decade ago.
Because of this I hope someone that has much better knowledge of Japanese can come and double check my work

These are listed by ID, not index.
NpcParam:

  • 1: Atarisawari (Unobtrusive?) Data (Recommended Source For Copy \u0026 Paste)
    • formerly "Atarisawari data (copy and paste recommended)-Unobtrusive data (copy and paste recommended)". I'm not entirely sure what "Atarisawari" is, but the rest of the translation seemed relatively correct so I assume that maybe the "Unobtrusive" is at least sort of correct? This seems to be a template param to copy/paste for a simple bipedal NPC
  • 510: DeS2 Test - Knight Assumed(?)
    • I only really changed the formatting for this one, but I'm not sure what is meant by "Knight Assumed", maybe an NPC thats supposed to be a knight or that you're supposed to think is a knight?
  • 540, 541, 550, 551: "DeS2 Test - For Watanabe(?)", "DeS2 Test - Managed by Watanabe(?)", etc.
    • I assume that Watanabe is the name of a dev who these params are for. The fact that 541 and 551 are seemingly the same but labelled as "spare" is interesting and honestly confuses me more.
  • 1003: DeS2 (End of April?) - Gate Closing NPC
    • Labelled sort of similarly to other params which i was pretty sure were named something like "End of April" or "April 2011", but this one uses the characters "4末〆", with that last character being something that even after reading about I still don't understand.
  • 225003: [Unused] Lesser Taurus Demon (7 Heroes??)
    • I have no clue what this is referring to. This param is unused, but the same ID is used in NpcThinkParam for the 2 Taurus Demon's to the left of Demon Firesage's arena. That one is simply labelled as "Won't Leave Home". So I assume this is cut content, but I'd like to at least get some confirmation that "7 Heroes" is in fact what the Japanese text says
  • 413001, 413011: Scarecrow Gardener (Pitchfork/Shears - Cast Off?)
    • Looking at the model mask, this Scarecrow Gardener is missing its shirt & pants, but does still have tools on its back (the shirtless one doesn't), so I guess maybe this one is more like "nude"? it does still have a little waistcloth on though. looking for suggestions on what to call this barely clothed individual

NpcThinkParam:
Mostly the same unsure translations as NpcParam, but there are a few ones unique to this param

  • 702: Beggar For calling Friends Test (Different Room?)
    • Looking at a dictionary I think this could be something like "Wrong room"? Like you walk into the wrong room and then the enemy calls for help.
  • 269010: Man-Serpent Soldier (Crystal Performance?)
    • Used for the Man-Serpent Soldiers who run up to the top of the Duke's Archives jail and climb the ladder when the alarm starts blaring. Idk a good way to describe them.
  • 278002: Mimic (Again, Can't Leave Home [injoke?])
    • As stated, I'm unsure if this is an injoke or just me poorly translating it. it comes right after "Mimic (Can't Leave Home)", and the only difference is that this one has an even shorter range to fight you before going back home. Probably could leave this as something like "Mimic (Can't Leave Home - Shorter Range)"

MenuColorTableParam:

  • 9: Background Plate (Concentration (brightness?) Adjustment)
    • I'm actually relatively sure of the translation here, just not sure of where this is used. My best guess is that its for the brightness adjustment menu but I haven't tested
  • 24: Menu Tab (Camp) (Bonfire?)
    • i don't know if I've ever seen them refer to the bonfires as "camps", but this is my best guess as to what this is for.

MoveParam:
Mostly DeS stuff that I'm not as familiar with

  • 109: DeS Armor Spider Peeking(??)
    • No clue what this is, the JP text says "Giant Spider" and its among the DeS stuff so I assume its Armor Spider, but idk what the other word is meant to be.
  • 113: DeS Storm King (Child) Bichibichi Wait
    • Idk if the Storm King's minions have official names, and I have a hunch that "Bichibichi" (or "ビチビチ") is onomatopoeia but I have no clue what for.
  • 118: DeS Shadowlurker (Female)? (For Disappearing)
    • I couldn't figure out what enemy this was talking about.
  • 119: DeS For Blood Mites (Giant Tick?)
    • Giant Tick is my best guess as to what enemy this is for but it could be like 3 different enemies in the Valley of Defilement so I have no clue.
  • 1003: [Unused] DeS Player - Dying?
    • Looked at the anims and it seems like its a sort of stumbling walk I assume to transition into a death anim? didn't check in game.

GameAreaParam:

  • 100: [Unused] DeS Beneath the Nexus (King Allant?)
    • JP text is approximately "Stone Pillar", but it seems to fit the ID of the Nexus in DeS, although the soul amount for clearing the area doesn't seem to match up with anything I could find.

LockCamParam:

  • 1: Summoning Magic Range (summon as in player summon or as in cast magic?)
    • Unsure if this is used or not, maybe its there for devs to change to in the debug menu to visualize the range at which summon signs should show up? I have no clue.
  • 1300, 1301: [UNUSED] The Catacombs/Tomb of the Giants(?) (Close/Far)
    • Doesn't use the same characters as other references to these maps, and they're not used, but the ID matches up with the map ID (13_00 for catacombs)
  • 10005: Camera (A bit Wider(?) - Prototype Map)
    • fields seem to be a bit further than "Medium" but not quite as much as "Far".

- Where possible I've tried to match NPC names with what they are called ingame and the (DS1R) Futurepress guide.
- player face presets are just taken from the game
- Changed references to "4th Edition" to "April 2011 version", to match the CharaInitParam they are used for. Through some cursory searching it seems like the kanji means something like "End of April", which fits.
- Also changed the April 2011 "Wizard" and "Sorcerer" to "Sorcerer" and "Pyromancer" respectively, to match their loadouts and also because they use the same Kanji as things that have almost certainly been translated correctly. (like 3007 - "[Class] Pyromancer" in CharaInitParam, uses the same 呪 character as "April 2011 Version Pyromancer_Male"
Some notes I have for some of the changes, most of the ones I've left out I figured would be self explanatory
I only tag things as unused if they seem like they could be easily confused as being used, like Black Iron Tarkus' character params among the rest of NPCs. Things which are clearly unused like the vagrant invaders I've left without anything saying they're unused. My reasoning being that if I added an unused tag to all of them, like more than half the params would have one, and it'd be a pain to look at it.

Area names:
These are cross-referenced with the GameAreaParam translations. Map names with a "/" are due to a lack of separation between the two in that internal name.
- Castle 1 -> Undead Burg/Parish
- Castle 2 -> The Depths
- Moriwaba -> Darkroot Garden or Darkroot Garden/Basin
No real separation between the 2 as far as I can tell. Its possible that the "1st half" from the unused vagrant NPC is Basin and the "2nd half" is Garden. For the "Beat Value" I went with Garden since its level and placement in progression implies its for Sif, rather than Moonlight Butterfly or exploring the Basin.
- Cemetery 1 -> The Catacombs
- Cemetery 2 -> Tomb of the Giants
- Underground Lake -> Ash Lake
- Kagemachi -> Blighttown
- Closed City -> Demon Ruins/Lost Izalith
- Royal Castle 1/Ojo 1 -> Sen's Fortress
- Royal Castle 2/Ojo 2 -> Anor Londo
For some reason these were translated in 2 ways. Ojo appears to be the pronunciation for the Kanji rather than a translation.
- Abyss -> New Londo Ruins
While the Abyss is an actual map, its usage here seems to imply they're just talking about New Londo as a whole, unless they really *were* considering a random NPC fight in the Abyss.
- Crystal Tower -> Duke's Archives/Crystal Cave
- Great Tomb -> Kiln of the First Flame
- Tutorial -> Undead Asylum

Characters:
Many of these were changed to match the DS1R Futurepress guidebook rather than the one for the original release. In some cases I've changed names found in game (usually ones from summon signs) to their more formal names (Usually found in the guidebook or item descriptions)
- Knight Solaire - Solaire of Astora
Former only shows up on his summon sign, everywhere else he's referred to as Solaire of Astora
- Lady of the Darkling -> Darkmoon Knightess
- Oscar, Knight of Astora -> Oscar of Astora
these 2 match the DS1R official guidebook
- Blacksmith Rickert -> Rickert of Vinheim
I have no clue where the old name comes from, even in the original guidebook its Rickert of Vinheim.
- Knight Lautrec -> Knight Lautrec of Carim
Matches DS1R official guidebook, he's also called Lautrec the Embraced, both in game by Patches, and also in the guidebook in parentheses after "Knight Lautrec of Carim"
Patches -> Trusty Patches
This one actually surprised me, the only places he's just called "Patches" is the original guidebook, and by Rhea in the Undead Parish. Everywhere else he's referred to as "Trusty Patches", mostly self-proclaimed, but also by Lautrec, and the DS1R guidebook
Black Knight Tarkus/Iron Tarkus -> Black Iron Tarkus
Matches in game text (speech and item descriptions) and DS1R guidebook
Knight Kirk -> Kirk, Knight of Thorns
His armor and shield explicitly uses name/syntax, and so does both guidebooks (although the original one puts "Knight of Thorns" first)
Xanthous King, Jeremiah -> Xanthous King Jeremiah
Prince Ricard -> Undead Prince Ricard
Crystal Knight -> Hollow Crystal Knight
Daughter of Chaos -> Quelana of Izalith
These 4 match the DS1R guidebook
Dark Moon Sword (Heavy/Light Knight) -> Darkmoon Soldier (Sword/Greatsword)
Name matches DS1R guidebook, sword/greatsword distinction taken from how the Black Knights are already distinguished in the community names.

Terminology:
- Magician -> Sorcerer
- Sorcerer -> Pyromancer
Sometimes Sorcerer was already correctly translated, but for the most part anything that was called Sorcerer was actually a Pyromancer, and anything that was called a Magician is actually a Sorcerer.
- Monk -> Cleric
- Vagrant NPC_Voyeur -> Vagrant NPC - Thief
- Vagrant NPC_Not possessed & Vagrant NPC_What You Don't Have -> Vagrant NPC - Deprived
These 2 are just funny.
- Devour/Phagocy/Phagocytic -> Gaping Dragon
A quick check of the Kanji matched it up with the Gaping Dragon. "Devour" is kinda close with the boss itself, and apparently a phagocyte is a cell that eats stuff, which... also kind of matches. anyway I just thought that was neat

Other:
- Proto_Onion Knight -> Prototype Version - Catarina Knight
Could go either way, I like Onion Knight but Catarina Knight is probably a little bit clearer?
- April 2010 edition_bandit -> April 2010 Version - Thief
Uses the same Kanji as Thief for the final game's class.
- Early Character -> Early Character - Deprived
Unlike the other deprived characters, the translation for this one's class was left blank, even though the Japanese text was the same.

- Big Hat Logan - Sen's Fortress -> Big Hat Logan - Sen's Fortress/Firelink Shrine
For NPCs that show up in multiple areas, I went through and double checked which CharaInitParams were used where and in cases where the same one was used in multiple areas, added that one afterwards. There are some interesting oddities too, like how the original Siegmeyer params used for Sen's Fortress are used for his death at Ash Lake.
- Griggs of Vinheim - Undead Burg -> Griggs of Vinheim - Lower Undead Burg/Firelink Shrine
In some cases, I've also gone back and added more precise locations like Lower Burg, Undead Parish, etc.
- Siegmeyer of Catarina -> Siegmeyer of Catarina - Blighttown
I've also added locations to params which previously did not have any.
- Knight Solaire (Summon) - Tomb of the Giants -> Solaire of Astora (Summon) - Kiln of the First Flame
Not entirely sure where this one came from, Solaire's final summon is for Gwyn, and the Tomb of the Giants has no NPC summons.

For these PV characters, I decided to go with the set names from the DS1 wikidot, I'm not entirely sure where they come from but they mostly match with the armor names.
- For PV_Red clothing head not equipped -> For PV - Crimson Set
this character just wears the full Crimson set that Ingward wears, with the Mask of the Sealer, so the old name isn't even really accurate
- PV for _ Chain Mail Woman (Phantom) -> For PV - Chain Set Woman (Phantom)
- PV_Hunter head not equipped (Phantom) -> For PV - Hunter Set (no hat) (Phantom)
This is the one I'm least sure of, since its just leather armor, but I guess its called that since its the Hunter class starting gear?
- PV for onion (phantom) -> For PV - Catarina Set Phantom
See above for Catarina set change.

- Test Player (Warrior / Sword, Ax Spear, Shield) -> Test Player (Warrior / Sword, Halberd, Shield)
This one has the Scythe equipped, but the names here seem to match the weapon class, so I went with Halberd (which is the Scythe's weapon class in DS1)
- Test player (mage / catalyst, straight sword, small shield, projection flame) -> Test Player (Pyromancer / Catalyst, Straght Sword, Small Shield, Flame Projectile)
Catalyst probably should be Pyromancy Flame, since thats what they actually have. "projection flame" only really seemed to lineup with the Fireball they had equipped, so I changed it to Flame Projectile, prob should just say Fireball though.
- Debug player with bow -> Debug Player (with bow)
For some reason the parentheses in the original text got lost, so I've re-added it to match the rest of the debug players.

For these, I mostly replaced the descriptive spell names with their final in game name.
- Debug player (magic: EN bullets A to C2) -> Debug Player (Spell: EN bullet A-C2)
The spell here is Soul Arrow and some of its variants (including Homing Soulmass). I have no clue what the "EN" stands for, but the bullet is probably either relating to the bullet param, or just to their purpose. A-C2 appears to be some sort of internal ordering of the spells, especially since the next debug player has D-D2 for the soul spear spells.
- Debug player (magic: F ball 1-3 / F storm 1-2 / flame emission / flame whip) -> Debug Player (Pyromancy: Fireball 1-3 / Firestorm 1-2 / Fire Surge / Fire Whip)
Clarified that the F here stands for Fire, also happens to end up matching the actual spell name :)
- Debug Player (Spells: Iron Body / Veil of Water / Copper Body / Enchanted / Crazy Power) -> Debug Player (Pyromancy: Iron Flesh / Flash Sweat / Undead Rapport / Power Within)
Copper Body appears to no longer exist, the row that this character is referencing is completely missing.
- Debug player (Spell: C_Fireball / C_Firestorm / C_Fire Whip) -> Debug Player (Pyromancy: Great Chaos Fireball / Chaos Storm / Chaos Fire Whip)
The C stands for Chaos. Since there's just one of each I just used the actual spell names instead of just writing stuff like "Chaos Firestorm"
- Debug player (miracle: causal reward / causal reward _ bullet / gravity / anti-magic / sun sword / moonlight sword) -> Debug Player (Miracle: Karmic Justice / Tranquil Walk / Vow of Silence / Sunlight Blade / Darkmoon Blade)
causal reward _ bullet if I had to guess is probably the Karmic Justice explosion that apparently is hardcoded? Unlike with Copper Body this character doesn't have a reference to a missing spell in its attuned slots.
- Debug player (Magic weapon: Straight sword of ancient dragon / Sword of stone) -> Debug Player (Unique Weapon: Drake Sword / Stone Greatsword)
For all of these "Magic" weapons I replaced them with "Unique", since they're not actually magic infused, they're just one of a kind weapons
Both versions:
- Labelled what each Black Eye Orb is for
- Fixed Estus Flasks & their drained variants being flipped
- Labelled Fire Keeper souls by who or where they come from
- Labelled Lord Souls by what boss they came from
- Changed unused 5th lord soul from "Demon Fire 5" to "Lord Soul 5"

DS1R: QLOC added params for items with the names of all the covenants, which have now been added. I didn't touch these, just noticed it when exporting, and it was probably throwing off importing row names via index.
Both Versions:
- Added labels to the unused weapon graphs to match them up with DeS (have not checked if the params are the same, going off of names.
- Added Label to the unused max MP param

DS1R: Labelled "Level Sync" graphs that were not in the original game. interestingly they're in Japanese so I assume they're just taken from DS3
Both Versions:
- Fix various typos regarding the Iron Golem & Moonlight Butterfly soul names for their boss weapon upgrade params.
- Mark unused Demon Titanite line
- Filled in previously incomplete param names (Black Knight variants, Unused throws, Hornet Ring throws)
- Updated names to match in-game or DS1R FuturePress Guidebook rather than the original release's guidebook.
Pretty much a complete overhaul and especially compared to some of the earlier commits I would like feedback on this.

- Updated names to either in-game or DS1R FuturePress Guidebook
- Added labels for location where NPC shows up (if they show up in multiple places). Did remove a few that seemed redundant, like noting that the Crestfallen Warrior (Hollow) was in the depths, even though he only shows up there
- Added labels for many things including:
  - if an NPC param is a summon
  - Invader
  - Invaded (black eye orb stuff)
  - Hollow
  - Black phantom (Gravelord stuff)
  - Weapon (for enemies with multiple weapon variants)
  - Unused (if not immediately clear from name, although I probably missed some unused enemy variants for specific areas)
  - Basically whatever else the devs left notes for
- Improved(?) translations of unused content.

Notes:
- My Japanese skills are frankly very beginner, so I relied a lot of a dictionary, cross-referencing other content in the game, and machine translation usually to try and understand context a bit better, so I hope that someone with better understanding of Japanese will go over some of these. Any row name that has a "?" in it is a translation I am very unsure of.
- I've changed any "DS2" or "DS2 Proto" references to say "DeS2" instead to hopefully reduce confusion, since they are for DS1 (when the game was still being developed Demon's Souls 2) rather than for Dark Souls 2. Alternatively I could probably be swayed into just removing the DeS2 part entirely for the names since its just for this game.
- I decided to stick with the name "Marvellous Chester" (UK spelling with 2 Ls) rather than "Marvelous" (US spelling with 1 L). It doesn't really matter, and I wish I didn't have to pick but unfortunately the game itself is inconsistent, with his dialogue and items using the UK spelling, but the invasion message text and DS1R guidebook use the US spelling.
See previous commit's comment.
replace JP text with English text, this param probably doesn't even need community names since the button to proliferate name from text exists (which is how I did this)
Slightly improved translation, mostly just capitalization though.
- Remove JP text and improved translations
- Labelled rows from DeS
- Labelled unused rows

Notes:
- I'm bugged a little bit by the fact that I made Lightweight and Heavyweight 1 word but Medium Weight is 2 words, but I can't think of a better term thats consistent with the rest
- I'm less familiar with DeS than I am DS1, so some of the DeS behaviors have "?" next to them because I do not remember what its talking about.
basically just consistency capitalization.
Just labelled the unused rows which carried over from DeS.
Changed unused "Witch Mallows" params to "Witch Beatrice".
While most of Beatrice's used params just call her "Witch". Her FaceGenParam still refers to her as "Witch Mallows", so I think its pretty safe to assume that that was her name at some point.
Since this is unused content it might be worth leaving as is? not sure.

Also removed references to Lautrec's companions being Tarkus and "Ninja" (same name as Shiva's bodyguard) in NpcThinkParam, since thats not who they are in the final game.
Mostly replaced with more accurate translations, aside from "Ice/Crystal", since that one is just called "Ice" in JP, but is used exclusively for the crystals in Duke's Archives/Crystal Caverns
A couple of unsure translations from me here.
Also marked everything that is unused (aside from ID 1, because I am unsure if that it used internally or not)
Noticed this while setting up the PR
- Standardized (anything I edited) unused content to be labelled as [UNUSED]
- Fix bad translations for spells in NpcThinkParam (Homing Soulmass & Pursuers)
- Cleaned up some questions I had left in NpcThinkParam after doing more research
- Did a bit more DeS research to clean up some leftover DeS stuff in MoveParam & GameAreaParam
treacherousfiend added a commit to treacherousfiend/Smithbox that referenced this pull request Oct 22, 2025
Bring over the changes from the old PR (vawser#277) to the new one, since Smithbow handles row names differently now.
Currently only has DS1R rows.
