I discussed it with a bunch of botanists and we agreed that some decent premium goodies on the nutrimax vendor would be good.

What this does

Makes it so the nutrimax vendor (the chems vendor for botany) has actual premium stock.
You can now spend a coin to get a Floral Somatoray, or a crate of lizards and frogs (hissing crate sans the insecticide).

Why it's good

Gives actual premium stock to a vendor that could use it, thematically appropriate.
Having access to emergency bug-eating critters can be a godsend, and asking for a valuable coin for an immediate source is reasonable.
Partially addresses #39047 (does NOT touch the seed vendor).

  • rscadd: A set of premium stock for the nutrimax (botany chem) vendor: Floral somatorays and a crate of lizards and frogs (Identical to a cargo pest control crate, but without the insecticide).

The somatoray is like, the only thing botany wants from R&D and it's not a big ask. It's also easily shared between multiple botanists. It seems weird to encourage botanists to go maint dive for a coin instead of talking to R&D.

Botany already has lots of interactions with cargo so I'm not really concerned with that.

You're vastly wrong there. What botany really wants from RnD is upgrades, upgraded trays, upgraded biogenerator, upgraded seed extractor, upgraded xenobotany machines, upgraded grinder. And while they're at it, upgraded microwaves and the rest of the kitchen machinery.
Sure, the somatoray is nice, but you can make do without one ever, the standard splices are good enough that you don't really bother with specific mutations unless you're doing something fairly niche, and even then you could've just gotten the chems at roundstart (except creatine for development, which does take a while to make, and a roundstart chemist would prefer to make the standard roundstart meds before making that).

giving people R&D shit for free is always a bad idea
departmental interaction not solo gameplay ok

adding actual content instead of just powercreeping would be a lot better
reducing the powercreep by putting one frog or lizard in there would be better

yeah we should remove somatorays from rnd so it's more inline with the advanced welding tool or whatever that's in the tool-vend

The advanced welding tool is actually interesting because the expanded tank welding tool is too big to fit on the non-CE belts, so you have to give up bag space. It's a straight upgrade for the CE, but then he can ALSO use the Gatling Welder on his toolbelt so that's still an R&D item. Meanwhile, you alternatively can just carry a small welder + fuel can.

Welding meta way deeper than you ever wanted to know!

Odd to hear so many anti-somatoray comments when every botanist I've talked to said it'd be a good idea.

But I play botanist and I'm even the one who coded like half those machine upgrades you listed (mechanic job not R&D)
