The Unathi Theocratic Dominion
The Unathi Theocratic Dominion is the encompassing government of the Unathi species. By far one of the most authoritarian states in the galaxy. It's implied cruelty is curbed by it's state faith, The Unity. An egalitarian animistic belief of dedication to life, craft, honor and introspection that's openly welcome to outside species. However it's seeming inaction to the radical sect of The Redeemers put doubt in many just how harmless The Dominion is.
The Dominion by scale of it's neighbors is a very young theocracy, only about 2,000 years old and formed after generations of cultural and open unification war by larger city-states against tribal neighbors who were seen as savages in need of civilizing. While having a fairly bloody history, the Dominion over the generations has become fairly pacifistic and the craft of war is seen as more of an art and only practiced in defense of the self of the Unathi people as a whole rather than a practical path to hone or perfect.
Despite the unified theocracy of the Unathi the world of Moghes is still fairly split into large city-states with outlying settlements, while clans make up one's general community they're often lead by spiritual disciples, who also act as governers and bureaucrats. While disciples are ranked mostly on age and size of what they oversee, there is a council of Arch-Diciples within Moghes' capitol that are claimed and rumored to be direct conduits for the spirits of the Unity, to the point their own names have been struck from memory. Though less pious and rural members of the faith doubt they exist, or even are still alive.
While seen and structured as a backwards theocracy by modern galactic society, the peace following the unification wars and tenets of the Unity resulted in a technological golden age that saw advancements in medicine, communication, weapon technology and food production. By the time Skrell had made first contact with the Unathi, the Dominion itself was close to unlocking their own way to space flight. Now allied with an advanced neighbor, the Unathi are free to seek out the stars and spread the Unity to those willing to listen.
As stated in their history the Dominion's first contact was with the Skrell, while communication was difficult at first, Skrellian scientists with the assistance of langauge AI bridged the gap between the species. The diplomatic Skrell seeing a strong defense ally with an intelligent, hardy species who they had contacted first taught the Unathi's brightest minds in what they lacked to achieve space and FTL flight. While also arming them with modern(by Skrell) technology. While so far this pact hasn't been evoked by either the Skrell or Dominion, the prospect of having to fight two major species speaks all it needs to for the sake of peace.
Egalitarian as it is, the Unity is still a state theocracy with harsh restrictions on the Unathi way of life. Also unlike most faiths it has little in the way of divergancies or sects(Redeemers aside), having kept a monolithic dogma over the centuries. Like most sapient faiths it forbids common sense sins such as theft or murder, however a few particular to the Unity stand out.
- How we are hatched(born) is what the Spirits intended, any growth must be found within, to purposely scar or alter the body is anathema.
- The death of a being is as sacred as it's birth, cremation is the only acceptable method of burial. To devour, harvest or bury the dead is to insult it's spirit and it's clan.
- The taking of a life is sacred and should only be done to save what matters as much, or more than oneself.
- Suicide is seen as the murder of the self, holding the same considerations and weights.
- All life is created equally under the Unity's spirits, and must be treated as such.
Today the Unathi are the smallest type 1.5 species in the Galaxy, holding the smallest claimed territory and amount of systems and colonies. Their relations with the Skrell and their values make them easy neighbors. However the Dominion's light, or absent effort to curb or speak out against the Redeemer Sect has become less and less tolerated. Both Solgov and the Skrell putting pressure on The Dominion to clean up what's seen as backyard terrorists.
