Bug Fix: Events page continuously loading video #8566

Prerequisite

Overview

We need to check if there are further steps necessary for resolving the continuous POST requests on the Events page. If this issue is not addressed a confusing user experience will persist, with continuous loading circle around favicon and extra bandwidth could be wasted. On slower internet connection, users may experience extra lag

Action Items

  • Briefly read through ER: Events page continuously loading video #4370 and Refactor HTML displaying video without iframe  #6353 to understand the video POST request issue and research into causes/solutions
  • In _includes/events-page/header-container-content.html, locate the code that includes the video and verify if the method for displaying the video still needs to be changed
  • Test the live Events page to see if the POST requests are still being sent. If you are not using a Mac, you may need to solicit help from other developers to test in that OS (The website Slack channel is a good resource for this).
  • Write a comment on this issue explaining your findings and if there is a need for another issue to change the video display method.
  • Add the ready for merge team label to this issue

@nathanjkim-codes The issue seems to be represented by Fetch instead of post. She my screenshot. To replicate,

    1. go to the page https://www.hackforla.org/events/
    2. click network tab
    3. see many resources trying to fetch from youtube

@ExperimentsInHonesty Thank you for the clarification.

I retested the Events page using the Fetch/XHR filter in the Network tab on Chrome/Windows.

I was able to see multiple YouTube-related fetch requests during the initial page load. However, after waiting, the requests did not continue increasing on my machine.

The request count stayed at 250/344.

Please let me know if there is anything else I should check.

@nathanjkim-codes Is that a normal amount? I agree its not continusiously loading, but lets make sure we have solved all loading problems with this video.

The TED Talk video player appears to be functioning normally. HLS manifests are requested a limited number of times, media segments load sequentially without restarting, all requests return successful responses, and network activity ceases when playback ends. No evidence of the previously observed continuous reload/fetch loop was found during testing.
