The required Rust audit rejects Candle 0.10.2's yanked ZIP 7 dependency. All ZIP 7.x and 8.x releases are yanked, including the version required by released Candle 0.11. This blocks unrelated SIE changes, including #761 and #764.

Adopt the maintained Candle 0.10.2 ZIP 9 backport at reviewed Git revision 9d2d6c6c1831c3d6444faca8e687dce06bd6bbe0, with candle-core and candle-metal-kernels patched to the same source. The lock keeps all four Candle source-cohort crates at 0.10.2, updates ZIP to 9.0.4, and adds ZIP's nix dependency. No unrelated package versions or audit-policy exceptions change.

Breaking minor change: ZIP 9 tries UTF-8 filenames first regardless of the ZIP filename flag, then falls back to CP437. This differs from ZIP 7 for unflagged bytes that form valid UTF-8 and invalid UTF-8 bytes with the UTF-8 flag set. COMPATIBILITY.md records exact byte/name examples and migration steps. This PR uses a breaking Conventional Commit classification so release automation selects a minor version during 0.x; it does not claim ZIP 7 filename parity. Ordinary ASCII, properly flagged UTF-8, and CP437 names whose bytes are not valid UTF-8 retain their names. Safetensors is unaffected.

The maintained source preserves decoded-name duplicate ordering, metadata-only lookup, CP437 NPZ/PTH selection and actual tensor retrieval. It also addresses CodeRabbit's error-propagation finding: only a real FileNotFound becomes the missing-array NPY error; other ZIP errors propagate.

Ten consumer integration tests run in the existing locked Rust worker suite. They cover eager/selective/lazy NPZ loading, actual PTH tensor data, UTF-8/CP437/Unicode-path names, both documented ZIP 9 flag-decoding changes, malformed archives, unsupported compression and missing arrays. The two ZIP 7 baseline expectations were first run against the fork and failed as predicted; the final tests explicitly assert the documented ZIP 9 semantics.

Validation is performed against the exact final source pin and committed worker lock: full worker tests, Clippy with warnings denied, formatting, all-feature dependency audit, and verification of one Metal crate identity and no unrelated lock drift. Full public CI and CPU/CUDA container checks must pass before merge.

Local validation on that exact source pin: 212 worker tests passed (6 ignored), Clippy with warnings denied, Rustfmt, unchanged all-feature cargo-deny, and git diff --check passed. The lock has one four-crate Candle Git source cohort, one Metal identity and zero unrelated package-version drift. Fork-hosted Ubuntu CPU checks passed on Rust 1.88.0 and 1.98.1. Public consumer CI and CPU/CUDA containers remain pending.

Release source closure: register the exact new packages/sie_server_rust/tests/candle_zip.rs path in CANDLE_PATHS; unknown-path, text-only, symlink and license checks remain intact. The guard diagnostic derives its count from the reviewed expected set. This fixes the tooling-contract failure from the prior CI head; all 82 release-contract tests and the full 611-test CI tooling suite pass locally.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Compatibility
    • ZIP-backed NPZ and PTH checkpoints may decode filenames differently: filenames are interpreted as UTF-8 first, with CP437 as a fallback. If this changes filenames in your checkpoints, regenerate them. Safetensors checkpoints are unaffected.
    • Checkpoint loading does not extract archive entries to filesystem paths.
  • Documentation
    • Added compatibility guidance on filename handling, checkpoint loading, and when regeneration may be needed.

📝 Walkthrough

The Rust package now patches Candle dependencies to a shared Git revision and adds integration tests for ZIP filename decoding and archive-loading errors. A compatibility notice describes the filename behavior change and checkpoint regeneration guidance.

Changes: Candle ZIP compatibility

Layer / File(s) Summary
Candle patch and ZIP-name compatibility
packages/sie_server_rust/Cargo.toml, packages/sie_server_rust/tests/candle_zip.rs, COMPATIBILITY.md
The manifest patches candle-core and candle-metal-kernels to the same Git revision and adds ZIP as a development dependency. Tests cover NPZ and PTH filename decoding, including CP437 and Unicode Path cases. The compatibility notice describes ZIP 7-to-ZIP 9 filename behavior and regeneration guidance.
Archive errors and selective NPZ loading
packages/sie_server_rust/tests/candle_zip.rs, tools/ci/check_release_contract.py
Tests check ZIP errors for non-ZIP inputs, unsupported-compression errors during selective NPZ loading, and an NPY error when the requested array is missing. The release source-closure check includes the new test file and reports the current allowlist size.

@coderabbitai review. Please explicitly include the changed vendored Candle files src/npy.rs, src/pickle.rs, src/utils.rs and Cargo.toml in the review, comparing them to the published Candle core 0.10.2 baseline documented in SIE_PATCHES.md. Review adversarial archive filenames, UTF-8/CP437/Unicode-path lookup, malformed-input error propagation, and the worker regression tests; the remaining vendored source is an unchanged published dependency. Keep the existing audit policy intact.

Sibling-sweep evidence for archive-name lookup (this archive code is outside the repository helper’s mapped ingress surfaces):

rg -n 'zip::ZipArchive|\.by_name\(|\.file_names\(' packages --glob '*.rs'
packages/sie_server_rust/vendor/candle-core/src/utils.rs:8:    archive: &'a mut zip::ZipArchive<R>,
packages/sie_server_rust/vendor/candle-core/src/utils.rs:17:    for (index, decoded) in archive.file_names().enumerate() {
packages/sie_server_rust/vendor/candle-core/src/pickle.rs:677:    let mut zip = zip::ZipArchive::new(zip_reader)?;
packages/sie_server_rust/vendor/candle-core/src/pickle.rs:679:        .file_names()
packages/sie_server_rust/vendor/candle-core/src/pickle.rs:773:        let mut zip = zip::ZipArchive::new(zip_reader)?;
packages/sie_server_rust/vendor/candle-core/src/npy.rs:286:        let mut zip = zip::ZipArchive::new(zip_reader)?;
packages/sie_server_rust/vendor/candle-core/src/npy.rs:308:        let mut zip = zip::ZipArchive::new(zip_reader)?;
packages/sie_server_rust/vendor/candle-core/src/npy.rs:383:        let mut zip = zip::ZipArchive::new(zip_reader)?;
packages/sie_server_rust/vendor/candle-core/src/npy.rs:411:        let mut zip = zip::ZipArchive::new(zip_reader)?;
packages/sie_server_rust/vendor/candle-core/src/npy.rs:425:        let mut zip = zip::ZipArchive::new(zip_reader)?;
packages/sie_server_rust/tests/candle_zip.rs:52:    let mut archive = zip::ZipArchive::new(std::fs::File::open(&path)?)?;
packages/sie_server_rust/tests/candle_zip.rs:63:    let mut archive = zip::ZipArchive::new(std::fs::File::open(&path)?)?;
packages/sie_server_rust/tests/candle_zip.rs:73:    let mut archive = zip::ZipArchive::new(std::fs::File::open(&source)?)?;

All three production name-based NPZ/PTH reads now use utils::zip_by_name. The two remaining file_names() calls are the fallible-name reader and the compatibility helper; both propagate decoding errors. Other archive reads use entry indexes. The test suite covers eager, selective and lazy NPZ reads plus metadata and tensor-data PTH reads. Replacing the helper with raw lookup fails both CP437 NPZ and CP437 PTH tests.

@krisztian-gajdar, I’ll include the four changed files under packages/sie_server_rust/vendor/candle-core/: src/npy.rs, src/pickle.rs, src/utils.rs, and Cargo.toml.

The review will compare them with the published Candle core 0.10.2 baseline identified in SIE_PATCHES.md. It will cover:

  • Adversarial archive filenames and decoded-name collisions.
  • UTF-8, CP437, and Unicode-path lookup.
  • Malformed-input error propagation.
  • Worker regression coverage in packages/sie_server_rust/tests/candle_zip.rs.

I’ll distinguish local changes from unchanged published dependency code. The existing audit policy will remain intact.

@coderabbitai review. The current head replaces the vendored snapshot with reviewed immutable superlinked/candle revision 9d2d6c6c1831c3d6444faca8e687dce06bd6bbe0. The prior finding is fixed in that source and covered by consumer regressions. Please review the four-file consumer diff, source-cohort pin, explicit minor-breaking compatibility migration, and all ten archive tests.
