are there any UI elements that should show an error message if this were to occur?

This is now fixed. If there is an error from the endpoint, the user will see an error message in the UI informing them that the attempt failed with debug instructions.

some question here, if this error state is reached, are there UI elements that should be displayed?

Are you going to be writing tests for this app? There is a lot of functionality to it and it would be great to see all the different failure scenarios tested and proven to be working as expected
