Setting up a new Blackberry (Archived)

These instructions are for setting up a Blackberry for real-life use. These instructions are not for developers who want to develop and test on a real device.

Make sure the network is connected. If it’s not turned on:
- Go to Manage Connection (the antenna icon) and check Mobile Network and Wi-Fi.

Set up options. Go to Options (the wrench icon)
- Date/Time
- Set Time Zone appropriately.
- Set Date/Time Source to Network.

- Check APN Settings Enabled
- Enter APN (e.g. yellopix.mtn.co.ug)

- Password
- Set a password on the handset.
- Date/Time

Install and run the RapidFTR application.
- Go to the Browser (the world with an arrow icon).
- If you want a dev version of the app:
- Navigate to dev.rapidftr.com:8000 and choose the appropriate build.
- Click on the .jad file in the build directory.
- If you want a “release” version of the app:
- Navigate to your RapidFTR instance /blackberry/RapidFTR.jad (e.g., http://uganda.rapidftr.com/blackberry/RapidFTR.jad).
- If you’re on Blackberry 4.6 and using an SSL certificate that relies on the SAN (as is the case for the certificate at uganda.rapidftr.com):
- Click the Don’t ask again button.
- Do NOT check “Set application permissions” before choosing Download.
- Run the app.
- When prompted about permissions, click “View.”
- Click the back button and choose “Save.”
- Choose “Log In”, then on the log in screen use the Blackberry button to open the menu and choose “Change Url”
- Make sure the URL is pointing to the correct server (e.g., https://uganda.rapidftr.com).
- Exit the app.

Move the application icon so it appears on the main screen (if desired).
- From the main screen, hit Blackberry once to bring up application icons
- Navigate to Downloads (the folder with an orange arrow)
- Select the RapidFTR app (the green adult and red child icon)
- Hit the Blackberry key and choose “Move to Folder.”
- Choose Home
- Hit back to go to the “Home” screen.
- Select the RapidFTR app, hit the Blackberry button, and choose Move.
- Move it to the top row.
